The Politics ...

... of Robert Louis Stevenson:

"There is no question there is a concerted effort to make this a political issue by some. And I join those who have called for looking into how is this opposition to the mosque being funded," she said. "How is this being ginned up that here we are talking about Treasure Island, something we've been working on for decades, something of great interest to our community as we go forward to an election about the future of our country and two of the first three questions are about a zoning issue in New York City."

Why is investigating the source of funding for the Obamamosque an 'unAmerican' act? Surely being American does not mean a rejection of rational thought, and no desire for empirical evidence?

After all, if political parties must provide the sources of their funding, then surely, religious institutions ought to provide the source of their funding (or lose their charitable status).

Posted by: ET at August 18, 2010 10:44 AM

Nancy has lost it . . .

Of course she has no concerns about the secret funding for the mosque. Since it is probably being funded out of Wahabi bank accounts, she should be concerned.

Posted by: Fred at August 18, 2010 10:44 AM

Speaking of politics, the left and supporters of the Obamamosque are actually now calling on George Bush to comment, favourably, on the building of the mosque - because he 'respected all religions'.

It is a zoning issue like the stoning of women in Iran is a geology issue.

right?

It seems to be a logical conclusion that all elected lawmakers should be tested for drug abuse including alcoholism at least twice a month.

Mosque - mosquito. Annoying.

Posted by: Sylvanguy at August 18, 2010 11:44 AM

"Ok, Nance, let's talk about your Treasure Island boondoggle. Why don't you tell us about how it got put together and who funded it, as opposed to who's going to make a bundle off it."

No, she wouldn't answer. Are you mad?

Posted by: mojo at August 18, 2010 11:49 AM

ET...The article said Pelosi was asking for an investigation into who was funding the OPPOSITION to the mosque, not the mosque itself. Which reeks horribly.

Posted by: mecheng at August 18, 2010 12:04 PM

I imagine it's never occurred to this debutante that people would naturally mobilise against this abomination.
Once more, Nancy Pelosi has offended Jesus AND everyone else.

Posted by: Osumashi Kinyobe at August 18, 2010 12:08 PM

Great link ET.

Worthy of it's own thread.

I will always cherish the few hours with GWB when he spoke in S'toon.

I've been harping on "class" lately, and I can hardly think of two classier people than George W and Laura Bush.

Perhaps the Left would also like GWB to comment on education, foreign aid and how to liberate oppressed people. Three issues the Left claim to hold dear that Bush got right.

Posted by: Indiana Homez at August 18, 2010 12:11 PM

Wow! Will I be investigated because I wrote to Mayor Bloomberg of my own volition, because I'm personally concerned about the building of the Obamamosque at Ground Zero BECAUSE IT'S A BAD IDEA and not because I'm racist or want to deny Muslims their rights and freedoms?

Leftards can't conceive that individuals might, on their own dime, at their own whim and taking advantage of one of our basic democratic rights, object to something that's happening. Because they have to get a movement going, usually paid for in some nefarious way by the taxpayer, they figure the rest of us operate the same way.

Well, Nancy Pelosi, call me out because I've used my rights of freedom of speech and freedom of expression to object to the mosque being built at Ground Zero. Then I'll call you out for what you are: a tryrranical despot -- and a total idiot, to boot.

Posted by: batb at August 18, 2010 12:20 PM

"Nancy has lost it ...
Posted by: Fred"

Fred, Nancy never had a grip on it in the first place. She got elected years ago to the House seat that is most of San Francisco and adjacent areas. That's the epicenter of California hard left wacko-ness. She's a member-in-good-standing of that hard left -cryptofascist, feminazi, pro-gay/lesbian, pro-eco warrior, anti-military, anti-conservatism, etc. In short, she duly espouses all the wacko causes and worldview of the hard left. Part and parcel of that is considering non-"progressives" as stupid at best and the enemy at worst.

In the case of Americans who are outraged at the idea of a mosque at Ground Zero (with the 5 times daily call to Muslim prayer wafting by speaker over that hallowed spot), we are at the worst end, the enemy.

Posted by: Dave in Pa at August 18, 2010 12:24 PM

Wonder what George W thinks of the matter, how he would handle it?

As for Canadians writing to that bloomimg fool, Bloomberg, we have every right to do so, we lost fellow Canadians in that TERRORIST attack by Islamists. Building a Mosque anywhere near that site is sacrilege, it's beyond contemptuous.

Posted by: Liz J at August 18, 2010 12:37 PM

In theory (but not a chance) Granny Pelosi could be talking about Obama when she says “There is no question there is a concerted effort to make this a political issue by some.” If there was ever an argument for term limits Pelosi is it.

Meanwhile Fox News (where else?) interviewed Dr. Zuhdi Jasser. What a refreshing stance he had about the Obamamosque which he is against. He is an M.D., president and founder of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy (AIFD), is one of these devout yet patriotic Muslims. A former U.S. Navy lieutenant commander, Dr. Jasser has made it clear that “until anti-Islamist Muslims wage the intellectual battle against Islamism within the Muslim consciousness, we will make no headway.”

I think you should be asking: where's my check?

Posted by: Indiana Homez at August 18, 2010 12:58 PM

Our Leaders. Always stabbing Americans in the back while doing the exact opposite of whats right. In A Pelosi mind , it the opponents of a group seeking to dishonor the victims of 9/11 that will NOT be investigated, where their money comes from. OH no!!! Its the people opposed to this Triumphal Mosque. An Obama Mosque for Islamics.
That we have to hound.
The Liberal mental disease. These people are traitors with no shame.

Posted by: Revnant Dream at August 18, 2010 2:25 PM

This woman is ridiculous. She has a nerve making accusations about "patriotic" people. I say people rather than Americans because every nation that had loved ones murdered on 9/11 is expressing their abhorrence to a mosque being built within ground zero. Nancy is "barking" up the wrong tree if she thinks objections will be quelled. Hey, San Fran Nan, please explain everything about the Treasure Island land grab so we can be sure you're not violating the law. That's a more relevant investigation if I ever saw one.

batb asks: "Wow! Will I be investigated because I wrote to Mayor Bloomberg of my own volition, because I'm personally concerned about the building of the Obamamosque at Ground Zero BECAUSE IT'S A BAD IDEA and not because I'm racist or want to deny Muslims their rights and freedoms?"

Yes, you will be.

Probably done already, hope you got the door closed on any skeletons you may have. Like unpaid j-walking tickets from 1975, forgot to dot an "i" on a passport application, stuff like that.

Posted by: The Phantom at August 18, 2010 3:06 PM

Incidentally, Limbaugh reports that Grandma Nancy is backpedaling away from this as of an hour or so ago. Washington Post or Times reports. Anybody got info?

Posted by: The Phantom at August 18, 2010 3:08 PM

D'oh, the article has an update right at the top.

RTFA, Phantom. argh.

"“I support the statement made by the Interfaith Alliance that ‘We agree with the ADL that there is a need for transparency about who is funding the effort to build this Islamic center. At the same time, we should also ask who is funding the attacks against the construction of the center.’"

Not much of a climb down eh? She really is stuck on stupid. This issue has focused the entire country more even than healthcare. She's shooting herself and her whole party in the HEAD, not the foot.

Posted by: The Phantom at August 18, 2010 3:14 PM

mecheng - yes, thanks for pointing out my error. That's unreal. She's trying to vilify opposition to the Obamamosque by suggesting some nefarious political agenda.

Heck, there's no reason to support the mosque and only one reason to oppose the mosque. It's called ethical values.

Posted by: ET at August 18, 2010 3:15 PM

Let us assume for a moment that George Bush was for the mosque. The left would be against it because he supported it. If he was against the mosque, they would be for it. If there is anything you can count on, it is the left's overwhelming tendency to be contrary.

Posted by: Osumashi Kinyobe at August 18, 2010 3:16 PM

Whoops! I posted this (below) at Reader Tips, not realizing that this thread was addressing the very same issue. (Thanks Cjunk.)

Power Line has reported that Nancy Pelosi thinks there should be an investigation into the opposition to the Ground Zero Mosque: if all left-wingers aren’t crazy, she certainly is. Here’s what she said on a radio show:

"There is no question there is a concerted effort to make this a political issue by some. And I join those who have called for looking into how is this opposition to the mosque being funded, How is this being ginned up that here we are talking about Treasure Island, something we've been working on for decades, something of great interest to our community as we go forward to an election about the future of our country and two of the first three questions are about a zoning issue in New York City."

P.S. I wrote Mayor Bloomberg a few months ago. By the time he answered, about three months later, I’d forgotten I’d even written him! It wasn’t worth waiting for: his response was a smarmy, condescending form letter. I wish I could include a copy here but I deleted it: it was a piece of junk.

So far, for making my contrary views known, nothing untoward has happened to me!

Posted by: lookout at August 18, 2010 3:49 PM

If they investigate the mosque financing I have a strong suspicion it will lead to Democrat funding. A can of worms this administration will not withstand without obvious partisanship.

Posted by: Speedy at August 18, 2010 4:39 PM

At NRO, Jonah Goldberg, commenting on the stupidity of certain politicians: “. . . [Bloomberg] also insists that opponents should be ‘ashamed’ of their bigotry, even though he expects ‘special sensitivity’ from the mosque’s backers. Apparently, it’s only shameful to think Ground Zero requires ‘special sensitivity’ if you oppose the mosque. Bloomberg apparently needs a tutor to pass his own church-state test.

“Which brings us to President Obama (who himself could have quietly intervened months ago) and to what may be his most embarrassing blunder yet. . . .”

Gallop has a poll out:
More Americans disapprove (37%) than approve (20%) of Barack Obama's recent comments concerning the planned construction of a mosque near the World Trade Center site in New York City, but 4 in 10 do not have an opinion.”

That high 40% no opinion is pause for thought. Does it mean the MSM obfuscation of the legal right to the Obamamosque versus the ethical issues around it is successfully confusing the voters? What might help Americans clear their thinking on this is an article by immigrant George Jonas in the NP today. He ends the article with a nice crisp wake up thought:

Here's an exercise for liberal-minded students of Canada's immigration policies. A lecture series by native leaders on the topic of "Reasonable Accommodation as a Strategy: Lessons Learned."

Posted by: nomdeblog at August 18, 2010 5:35 PM

Might I suggest that White Supremacists set up shop beside Nazi Nancy's house, honestly wanting those horrified at a monument to terrorism being built investigated. Welcome to the loopy upside down world of the Modern Left where those grieving the loss of loved ones because of 9/11 terrorism makes them worthy of being investigated.

Posted by: rose at August 18, 2010 6:01 PM

Bush would probably give it the okay, then have the place wired.

Posted by: Peter O'Donnell at August 18, 2010 6:21 PM

I have an idea. Let's build a multi-story office tower on a First Nations burial ground and see what happens. The lefties are guaranteed to rally round on behalf of the builders, right?

sorry...but i dinna get the 'treasure island ' reference by Pelosi...

am i thick ?

or is it simply another kookoo bananas remark by the silly cow?

would someone be kind enough to explain ?

merci

There is only one place to build this mosque, and that is over my dead body.

Posted by: larben at August 18, 2010 7:23 PM

john begley, I believe the Treasure Island reference has something to do with some iffy, financial (or other) deal that Nancy Pelosi's involved with. I’d imagine a Google search would fill in the blanks.

Posted by: lookout at August 18, 2010 7:50 PM

john begley: Perhaps, Treasure Island is "the word".

Since every demonstration the democrats have is bought and paid for, she can't imagine people doing it for free. More projection from the left.

Lets test their principles.

Would Pelosi care to support the building of a religious institution beside the Hollywood sign?

Posted by: gimbol at August 18, 2010 8:46 PM

From memory,

The Ilsand is a place where Pelosi owns a lucrative business producing something ( can't remember what ) and that she managed to get exempt from some tax hike.

She also owns a couple restaurants if I'm not mistaken

Posted by: Friend of USA at August 19, 2010 8:53 AM

Treasure Island
How appropriate for the Obamites.
As the principle they live by. The whole world is theirs to plunder. A treasure Island, all owned by them.

Posted by: Revnant Dream at August 19, 2010 2:18 PM

That was very clumsy of Barry the Slime Bucket to try and spin that - to prevent building a mosque at a certain location is a direct challenge to the freedom of religion. Both Nance and The Slime Bucket need to know that freedom of religion is not a free license to build anywhere you damned well please.

I would suggest that a better use for the supposed $100 million would be to donate it to Pakistan flood victims.
