Progressia: All About the Little Guy

Federal workers have been awarded bigger average pay and benefit increases than private employees for nine years in a row. The compensation gap between federal and private workers has doubled in the past decade.

Federal civil servants earned average pay and benefits of $123,049 in 2009 while private workers made $61,051 in total compensation, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. The data are the latest available. (click image for story)

It would be interesting to know what the numbers would be here in Canada for a public versus private comparison. Do you have any.

The cost of government salaries and benefits is eating taxpayers alive.

Ontario Sunshine Laws have helped illuminate only some of the salaries and benefits paid out of the public purse. What is needed is to have a full listing of all salaries and benefits paid by federal, provincial and municipal governments including any and all businesses owned or operated by them including those at arms length. If taxpayers actually had access to this information voter turnout during election would rise dramatically.

An example of how salary and benefit costs have risen is shown below.

Growth of $100K Club in London Ontario 2006 - 2009

In 2006, there were 71 City employees earning more than $100,000.00. By 2009, that number had grown to 269. Total salaries for this group increased from $9 million to $31 million over the same period.

North America has become a continent of two classes, one that works for a living and one that votes for a living. The major difference between Canada and the US is that the voting class in the US only votes for one Party while the Canadians have a four way split. Those that work and are not enamored with looters and thugs tend to vote for the other Party which, theoretically, would like to reduce the role of Government but just can't seem to pull it off.

Is there any wonder the parasitic public sector unionists are Sxxting themselves over the prospect of the tea party revolution.

Public sector expansion hiring has also helped hide the fact America;s highest paid private sector jobs were exported off shore along with the manufacturing base. THe ticking time bomb now is the matter that a smaller and smaller private sector with less income from service economy jobs cannot sustain the ever growing size of private sector costs.

Sweden (progressia's model) hit this imbalance point in the late 70s and was forced to downsize the public sector and adopt more private sector industry friendly policies.

That graphic proves the NDP are correct. Just make every Canadian an employee of the state and we will have no more poverty as everyone will earn a 6 figure income. Problem solved. /sarc off

The saddest part is that too many Canucks would not think your comment was sarcastic...

The only way out now is the guillotine or at least a solid threat to use them.

Five Simple Truths

(1) You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the industrious out of it.

(2) You don't multiply wealth by dividing it.

(3) Government cannot give anything to anybody that it doesn't first take from somebody else.

(4) Whenever somebody receives something without working for it, somebody else has to work for it without receiving.

(5) The worst thing that can happen to a nation is for half of the people to get the idea they don't have to work because somebody else will work for them, and the other half to get the idea that it does no good to work because they don't get to enjoy the fruits of their labor."

Whats to say? Where actually watching the break up of the system in real Time. The left has finally run off a cliff inciting sloth & avarice. With the politics of Identity & entitlement. With a whopping heaping of Envy with self righteous victim-hood.
Your points are the road that got us here.
Good post

Never understood why public service employees needed a union anyways. The union is just a parasitic leech skimming off the top. Public service unions should be abolished or, at the very least, membership made voluntary.

Jim Horne, that was a great post at 12:08. You should be running in the mayoralty race in Hogtown and as the next premier of Ontario.

It is time to take back the country from the Marxists.

For the left who aspire to work for the federal or other government agency we must remember this.

Most of them do not believe in god or an after-life.

So their career in the employ of the state is the next best thing to an after-life.

Some of them actually had a life or at least the potential of one prior their government after-life career.

The beauty of the living dead in the government work realm (and our compensation) is that their state sponsored after-life looks a lot more like hell than the other place.

In my view it's apathy that's gotten us here. Compound this with consecutive generations ignorant of history, economics, civics, phys.ed and you've got the perfect recipe: a undereducated slothful population. In my view, the majority of people I come across have very little knowledge our politics, and have even less interest, nor the intellectual tools to do any homework regarding their positions. The results are a population that supports and votes based on intuition instead of intellect making them susceptible to “feel good” issues and views. I’d like to say the Left has masterfully manipulated the public sector, the media and whatever else; but, as I’m getting older it’s becoming more and more apparent that though the Left may have been effective, it’s been the dunderheads on the Right who’ve been more oblivious to what’s happening in the peripheral than a prize horse at the Kentucky Derby.

Imagine what the Salary's & Benifits at the UN are costing us.

Add some more aid to Nuclear countries, like Pakisthan and China, and aren't we the people for the world to love.

Well as long as we, don't exersise our rights to free speech, freedom of expression, or peaceful assembly.

It's no magic to be the friend of the world, you just need to work like a dog and give your labors away letting the world use you like a doormat to wipe their feet. Liberalism

Do you realize you are comparing two completely different groups of workers? In the private sector, there are builders, janitors, farmers, professors and investment bankers.
In the government, there are college graduates with (hopefully) years of experience who are destined to doing responsible tasks and making sure your tax money is utilized well. I'm not commenting on how well they do their job or if there's too many of them, but they are a homogeneous group, as opposed to the ENTIRE private sector!
Apples or oranges, anyone?

Lorne Marr: Don't you realize that the government worker class includes everyone from top ministers with doctorates, government engineers to floor sweepers, switch-board operators, food services workers, and paper pushers with nothing beyond grade 12.

{responsible college graduates}???

Have you ever met and spoken with any of these bureaucratic simpletons?

Many if not most have the intelligence and personality of a wet paper bag. It's 9:30am to 4:30pm with a 2 hour lunch break and a FU attitude all day long.

This has been the drop out depository for western society, and we fund this useless mallenoma.

Maura Davies, President and CEO of Saskatoon District Health, earns the most the Sask Gov. allows her to earn. About 290,000 a year. She gets 12 earned days off per year and 6 weeks Holliday. Are you people following me. She recently cashed in some unused holliday time for pay and also cashed in EDO's for pay. This makes her sallary well over 300,000. It seems to me that she is skirting the rules by doing this. My wife works for Saskatoon District Health as a Sterile process worker. She would have to work for 35 years to get 6 weeks of holliday pay. She cannot bank her holliday pay and ask to be paid out. Jim Rhode,(Davis Machine Company), Former co-owner of the Octane Restaurant in Saskatoon, A Sask Health Authority Chair is quoted in the Star Pheonix as saying " they plan on asking the Government of Sask. to raise the pay that Ceo Davies can recieve." What the F--- does he know about healthcare? 200,000 dollar Nurses, 300,000 dollar Doctors and Pencil pushing CEO's and upper management starting at 200,000 and you are left to wonder why gramma must suffer for 2 years before she can get a hip replacement. This is F'n BULLSHIT. All the Health Authority People where hired under the NDP. It's time Brad Wall got off his micro mannager ass and started to act like a conservative. Come on Wall, Stop being a PUSSY.

I showed this to the friend I'm staying with here in Portland, Oregon. She's a hardcore Democrat and still supports Obama big time. Yet, as a private sector pseudo-self-employed person, she was beyond disgusted.

In the bigger picture, what's interesting is that issue after issue after issue, her & I agree on almost every one. Yet she will keep on voting for the people that keep on delivering these terrible policies.

If the Republicans/Conservatives can resolve that puzzle then things will change for the better.
