Reader Tips

Tonight's amusement en route to the tips features some archival footage of what was almost certainly the most hotly-contested Presidential campaign in US history. The year was 1956, and Popeye, who was running under the banner of the Spinach Party, was neck and neck with Bluto, the head of the Blutocratic Party. Well into the election day vote count, while the respective candidates were still campaigning furiously, a scrolling news ticker on the side of a building brought a shocking and highly dramatic piece of news:

Votes tied for Popeye and Bluto - no ballot yet from Miss Olive Oyl - only resident of Green Country - her vote will decide election.

For amateur historians interested in campaign strategy and the politics of personality, it doesn't get any better than the riveting short film Popeye For President.

"'Decoy Jew' is a new phrase in the Netherlands. Jews are no longer safe in major Dutch cities such as Amsterdam. Since 1999, Jewish organizations in the Netherlands have been complaining that Jews who walking the Dutch streets wearing skullcaps risk verbal and physical attacks by young Muslims. Being insulted, spat at or attacked are some of the risks associated with being recognizable as a Jew in contemporary Western Europe.

"Last week, a television broadcast showed how three Jews with skullcaps, two adolescents and an adult, were harassed within thirty minutes of being out in the streets of Amsterdam. Young Muslims spat at them, mocked them, shouted insults and made Nazi salutes. 'Dirty Jew, go back to your own country,' a group of Moroccan youths shouted at a young indigenous Dutch Jew. 'It is rather ironic,' the young man commented, adding that if one goes out in a burka one encounters less hostility than if one wears a skullcap."

Nova Zimbabwe:

"South African journalists have launched a campaign to fight what they say is an attempt to curtail media freedoms in a nation known for one of Africa's freest and most open Constitutions.

"In a declaration published in all main Sunday newspapers, the South African National Editors' Forum said media restrictions proposed by the African National Congress threatened free expression that was the 'lifeblood' of the country's democracy since the end of apartheid-era rule in 1994. Those proposals include a new media law and a special tribunal for journalists.

(...)

"The fears of an onslaught against the media were highlighted Wednesday by the arrest of a reporter who wrote a series of articles for the Sunday Times on alleged corruption by senior officials and police commanders.

(...)

"Last week's edition of the paper carried a report by Wa Afrika implicating top police officials in plans to lease a new headquarters building from a wealthy friend and ally without following regular tender procedures.

"Denying any wrongdoing in that deal at a news conference, police chief General Bheki Cele described Wa Afrika as 'a very shady journalist, very shady'.

"Militant youth leaders of the governing party have been in the forefront of calls for tight media curbs.

"On Saturday, youth league leader Julius Malema branded journalists as 'dangerous.'"

I came accross this link - a documentary on the bloody history of communism, so thought I would share it. From what I have listened to so far, it is an accurate and factual account - a real documentary. Narrative starts about 2 minutes in.

EBD:

Didn't they remake that movie recently? Although Kevin Costner's impersonation of Olive Oyl is worse than his Robin Hood.

via The Vicious Babushka, an interesting article on Chinese Jews:

[snip]

They come from a community that has fascinated Jews for centuries — China’s Kaifeng Jewish community. Jews are said to have settled in China in the eighth or ninth century. It is believed that at one point, there were as many as 5,000 Jews in Kaifeng; however the community disintegrated in the mid-19th century, with the death of its last rabbi, and those members that hadn’t done so already intermarried and dropped most aspects of religious observance.

The seven men in Jerusalem are descendants of this community in which families retained a sense of Jewish identity and, in some cases, in a manner reminiscent of the Marranos of Spain and Portugal, clung to some disjointed traditions.

Don't bother with the communisim documentary - ends up being very disappointing - contained some interesting information i had not heard before and then about 40 minutes into the hour long documentary it starts preaching the Koran - heavily - even goes as far as to say that the Koran warned against such ideology as being unintelligent and unscientific. I am amazed the film goes on about the millions murdered by the brutal communists and ignore the millions murdered by Muhummad. A blatant example of hypocrisy - truly astounding. Well - sadly it had me suckered in for the first 20 minutes.

Taliban Suffers Blow in PR War

August 11, 2010 - 4:51 PM | by: Justin Fishel

WASHINGTON -- The Taliban suffered a major blow in Afghanistan's critical public relations war this week after a United Nations report revealed that insurgent forces are largely responsible for a spike in civilian deaths and injuries. The number of Afghan casualties has increased 31 percent in 2010 compared to the same time period in 2009, according to the report issued Tuesday by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan.

"If the upcoming election results fail for any reason (including GOP campaign incompetence) to empower the public's overwhelming desire to stop and reverse the fundamental transformation of the United States, I suspect the country will be rocked to its core within the following months and few years.

"A foul and dangerous brew is heating up that is composed of: (1) The economic collapse that started in 2008; (2) the radical, 'fundamentally transforming' left-wing agenda of the government; and, (3) the thwarting of the public will -- with glee -- by the entrenched, non-elected powers (in the courts, media, colleges and government bureaucracies) as they get into the face and under the skin of the cultural and political majority.

"It is insufferable (and will not long be suffered) to be lectured to and imposed upon by a ruling class that loathes our nation's history, values and accomplishments; by those who are not, in fact, our genuine betters. They are neither better educated nor more profoundly morally versed."

Obama's immigration non-policy isn't having the intended effect:

1. "President Barack Obama has lost the most trusted man in the Hispanic media."

"Univision’s Jorge Ramos, an anchor on the nation’s largest Spanish-language television network, says Obama broke his promise to produce an immigration reform bill within a year of taking office. And Latinos are tired of the speeches, disillusioned by the lack of White House leadership and distrustful of the president, Ramos told POLITICO.

“'He has a credibility problem right now with Latinos,' Ramos said. 'We’ll see what the political circumstances are in a couple of years, but there is a serious credibility problem.'”

2. "Yesterday, Harry Reid said: 'I don't know how anyone of Hispanic heritage could be a Republican.'

"This morning, Republican Florida Senate candidate Marco Rubio, the son of Cuban exiles, told Fox News that Reid's comments are 'outrageous.'

"'It's outrageous. It's ridiculous,' Rubio said of Reid's comments. 'You know, Americans of Hispanic descent, you know the strongest issue there is? That is economic empowerment--upward mobility. My parents worked every single day to work to give me and my siblings opportunities that they didn't have.'

"H1N1 outbreak strained health system and led to public loss of confidence"

"OTTAWA — Public health units were stretched and Canadians lost confidence in their governments during the H1N1 pandemic, says a report released Thursday on the challenges physicians faced during last year's worldwide flu outbreak.

"The H1N1 influenza pandemic strained public health resources and primary care providers alike," said Matthew Hodge, president of the National Specialty Society of Community Medicine. "Preparing for the future means we must strengthen the relationship of these critical frontline workers."

Left-liberalism is a mental disorder.

...-

"Cindy Sheehan Challenges Robert Gibbs to a “Pee-Off”

When it seemed politics could not get any more juvenile, the Left has sunk to a new low. Cindy Sheehan has challenged White House spokesman Robert Gibbs “to a pee-off.”

Earlier this week, Gibbs lashed out at what he called “the professional Left” – as he has everyone else – saying, “Those people ought to be drug-tested.”

Left-wing professional wailer Sheehan saw him and raised him.

“I will put my urine up against Gibbs’ any day, and in fact, will travel to Washington to give him a fresh and warm sample,” she offered.

Whither Al Gore (WAG) ? (Formerly AGW Report)

ICE melts.
…-

“ICE cuts staff at Chicago Climate Exchange-sources”

” * ICE to cut around half of 50-person CCX workforce

* 1st round of layoffs began July 23, more to come in autumn

* Sources cite U.S. climate inaction as main reason for cuts

* ICE collecting feedback on what to do with climate bourse”

“ICE just came in one day and started hacking away … We were told the company was restructuring,” said one source, who declined to be named.”

“… prices for the carbon credits traded on the bourse since its 2003 launch, which were based on voluntary but legally binding emissions reduction commitments by its members, have crashed to around 10 cents a tonne from all-time highs of over $7 in 2008, and trading volumes have largely dried up.”
