In the interest of keeping things light for the summer, tonight's amusement en route to the tips thread comes from German-born Ria Bartok, who achieved minor success in 60's France as one of many so-called "yé-yé" girls - yé-yé being a light, la-la-la sort of bubblegum pop. Here she is dancing and lip-syncing her way around Riviera cafes in her remake of French pop star Johnny Hallyday's hit Because I Saw Linda, called Parce Que J'ai Revu Francois.

How long will it take before Bob Rae and Jack Layton protest on his behalf?!?
Excerpt from an interview with former Lebanese minister Wiam Wahhab, on Lebanese TV:
Interviewer: "Who do you support [in the World Cup]?"
Wiam Wahhab: "My children and I supported Brazil."
Interviewer: "Me too."
Wiam Wahhab: "Brazil lost. My wife supports Germany. We drive the kids mad. Now I am supporting Argentina."
Interviewer: "You have become subordinate to your wife when it comes to soccer?"
Wiam Wahhab: "No. I support Germany in politics and Brazil in soccer. I like the way Brazil plays. But I like the Germans because they hate the Jews and they burned them."
Posted by: EBD at July 11, 2010 10:24 PMEBD - remember the rhetoric of Obama's infamous pastor, the very reverand Wright.
Didn't he declare that 'the Jews wouldn't let Obama talk with him'; and his famous 'God damn America'; his comment that 9/11 was justified; his focus on racism, that black crime is not due to the individual but is due to the societal evil of white America;..on and on.
Obama claims to have never heard of these constant refrains in his sermons. Oh, and Obama, since leaving that church where he spent 20 years, has not found another church. He does not attend church. Obama seems to hold many of the views of Wright; he simply doesn't say them as openly.
My point is that radical hate is found in the Middle East, and elsewhere...and that much of this is found within the so-called religious arenas of the land. What business does Wright have to talk about political issues?
As for the Lebanese (govt) minister - I'd say that Lebanon is being used, as is Syria, as an extension of Iran. The real threat is Iran, and its agenda is not against Israel per se but a pro-imperialist focus. Iran wants to control the whole Middle East.

Posted by: Nemo2 at July 12, 2010 6:12 AMRemember the emotional reaction to the earthquake in Haiti, where the immediate reaction of so many individuals was to 'send them money' and if you didn't do this you were guilty of a lack of sympathy? I cautioned against this, saying that the money could get swallowed in the corrupt government, run by just 30 families, in Haiti.
Well, it's six months after, and nothing has been done. The money seems to have disappeared in Haiti. The temporary tent camps have now become permanent. The people are unemployed and dependent on UN, not Haitian, but UN and external aid.
Exactly as it was before.
No housing, no roads, no schools, no medical services, no employment. Just like it was before. While the 30 families continue their isolate, protected and rich lives.
http://www.nationalpost.com/news/months+after+quake+Haitians+still+suffering/3264216/story.html
As it was before, the Haitians who are not members of this 'Thirty Families' are left by that government to fend for themselves, and rely, as they did before, on foreign aid for medical care, supplies, food and even schools. The Haitian government ignores them.
The government says that it can't build houses now because it is 'concentrating' on the coming hurricane season. I'm not sure what 'concentrating' on this means; it certainly won't help the hundreds of thousands living in tents, and building themselves new shacks using scrap wood they find on the street - which shacks will be blown away in a nanosecond.
Posted by: ET at July 12, 2010 8:39 AMNemo2, so as per your link to the MSNBC poll:
"Do you support Arizona's tough new law on illegal immigration?"
96% Yes 3,125,414 votes
4% No 131,603 votes
Obummer on the wrong side of the people as usual.

Others offered a more plausible explanation for Alvin Greene's victory in South Carolinas senate race including Matus.Posted by: Fearless Leader at July 12, 2010 10:27 AMMatus thought that voters might have confused Alvin Greene with legendary soul singer Al Green.
Matus even suggested a campaign slogan to take advantage of the confusion: "Let's Stay Together ... with Al Green."
I think that should probably read ",,,with Al Greene."

Posted by: maz2 at July 12, 2010 1:37 PMI'm sure most of you probably heard the story about Octavia Nasr being fired from CNN. But do you really understand why? I didn't, until I listened to a very interesting podcast this morning. I wrote about it here. What's most disturbing is that this woman's dismissal touches just the tip of the iceberg of how slanted the news coverage coming out of the Middle East is.
Posted by: Robert W. (Vancouver) at July 12, 2010 3:06 PMAfter reading this I was quite pleased with myself I stopped going to this this abomination before the rot got this far. This will be the last generation of this "Church". In the Northern hemisphere. The Southern counterpart is still healthy, but with liberal Bishops like Desmond Tutu. It will go the way of the Northern branch. Sad really. Most High Anglicans have left for the Catholic church, while the Low have gone to Independent congregational churchs.
The Anglican prayer book was a beautifully written set of devotions. As was worship. Just goes to show no matter what Liberals attempt they fail. They make even our houses of prayer deformed.

Posted by: Revnant Dream at July 12, 2010 3:17 PMMajor severe storm potential next two days for AB, SK, and (by Tuesday) into MB. This is a very potent outbreak and needs to be closely watched by folks across the prairies. For some there will be two outbreaks, one tonight and another on Tuesday. It will turn a lot colder and even outside of thunderstorm cells it will get very windy. Upper level dynamics are quite strong for July, and the air coming in behind the fronts is unseasonably cool (around 10-12 C). I expect most weather info sources to be ramping this up soon but my updates are found on the FD weather thread. Bring the animals in and leave Iggy outside to his fate.

"What summer? Record cold at LAX as July gloom continues"
July 10, 2010
"Unusually cold temperatures in Southern California continued, with Los Angeles International Airport setting a record low on Friday.
LAX got to only 67 degrees, breaking a record set in 1926, according to the National Weather Service.
Temperatures are expected to stay fairly cool Saturday, with highs around 70 on the coast and in the 80s inland. Conditions will be a bit warmer on Sunday, according to the weather service.
July has turned out to be cooler than normal."
