Reader Tips

Anyone who has ever attended a memorial service and looked into those fading and frail blue and brown eyes of the veterans of the great wars has seen not fearless, superhuman characters , but rather modest and decent humans who risked everything in defense of freedom. Subsequent generations have been taught about the heroism and the glory, and the machinery of war, and tactics and the dates of key battles, and casualty figures, but no textbook can put us in their shoes; we will never walk strung-out, numb, and exhausted, down a muddy road in a foreign land, or experience the horrors they saw.

Tonight's song is a paean to the frailty of human life, and to the persistence of love even in the face of final loss. We hear the voice of a doomed soldier whose hopes and dreams are too late for this world; even as he's resigned to his fate, he yearns for home, seeing it more clearly by its impossible distance, as a woman's voice rises, shining, immutable, and eternal like a diamond, amidst the horrors he will soon be freed from.

The melody is taken from the 17th century Irish air Fainne Gael an Lae, later known as The Dawning of the Day, and the lyrics were written by Jennifer Warnes. Here's the biographically mysterious UK trio known as O3B singing the elegiac, haunting, and almost unbearably beautiful Too Late Love Comes.

The comments are open for your Reader Tips.

Thank you, EBD, for remember this special day in our military history - the liberation of the Netherlands by the Canadian military. Sixty-five years ago today. May 5, 1945.

It's a national holiday in the Netherlands. Every year. They know what freedom means and how easily it can be lost.

Agreed: thanks EBD. Thirty years ago today I landed in Amsterdam on
my first overseas travel. The Netherlands were flying Canadian flags
that day. I learned a lot of history on my first day in Europe; it turns out
it wasn't the history I was expecting to first learn. Funny how that works.

From Scott Kirwin's Socialism = Cannibalism:

"Using Forbes’s Richest People in 2009 I filtered out the 100 wealthiest Americans and calculated their total net worth: $661 billion. Many on the list are household names. Bill Gates tops the list, followed by Berkshire Hathaway’s Warren Buffet and Oracle’s Larry Ellison. The Walton family pops up high on the list as does New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Google’s Sergei Brin. Other names appearing in descending order: Democratic Party owner top contributor George Soros, corporate raider Carl Icahn, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, Obama supporter and friend David Geffen, Ross Perot, Rupert Murdoch, and near the bottom, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Ralph Lauren and Oprah Winfrey with a net worth of only $2.7 billion.

"For accounting and Excel geeks, the mean net worth of the top 100 Americans is $6.61 billion; median net worth is $4.0 billion.

"There are 300 million Americans give or take. If we ruined all these men and women and spread their wealth evenly across America, each person would receive a bit over $2,200.

"...the next 100 wealthiest Americans have a combined worth of “only” $190 billion...(if redistributed) it each American $633."

"The basic problem with 'eating the rich' is that there are so few of them compared to us. So far we’ve digested just 200 Americans, but there are 300 million of us. There simply isn’t enough rich to go around and make a difference in our lives – and that’s without taking into account the damage to society caused by our wealth redistribution exercise."

What If Arizona Were Quebec?

By Michael Filozof

May 04, 2010

Suppose for a moment that 15 million Americans -- the population of Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, and Connecticut combined -- sneaked across the border into Quebec. Suppose that these illegal immigrants refused to learn to speak French, that they applied for Canadian welfare, that they reproduced at a rate higher than Quebec's residents, and that they bankrupted Canada's socialized medical system. Suppose that they sent their children to Canadian schools in such large numbers that Quebec's school system had to teach "French as a Second Language" courses.

Suppose that the 15 million illegal American aliens included large numbers of criminals, drug dealers from Vermont, and arms traffickers, causing Quebec's crime rate to soar; that they comprised 20% to 30% of Quebec's prison inmates; and that they routinely evaded capture by Canadian authorities by sneaking back across the border, where they engaged in gang warfare.

Suppose that the illegal Americans congregated in packs on Montreal street corners, looking for day labor for which they did not pay taxes, and drove through the streets of Quebec without driver's licenses or motor vehicle insurance. Suppose that the illegals marched openly in the streets of Montreal, waving the Stars and Stripes, celebrating the Fourth of July, and demanding amnesty. Suppose that illegal American college students formed radical pro-U.S. organizations on Quebec's campuses and demanded resident tuition discounts and affirmative-action preferences.

Let us further suppose that when the Montreal Canadiens played the Washington Capitals at the Bell Centre, large numbers of illegal Americans waved the American flag, booed, hissed, and doused Canadiens fans with beer when "O, Canada" was sung in French prior to the opening face-off.

How do you suppose Canada would react? Would Quebec City and Laval declare themselves "sanctuary cities" and refuse to cooperate with federal authorities seeking to deport the illegal Americans? Would Quebec offer driver's licenses to the illegals? Would the province refuse to ask voters for identification and proof of citizenship?

If Quebec's provincial parliament passed a law allowing the police to demand proof of citizenship from suspected illegals, would the Prime Minister call it "misguided"? Would the Bishop of Montreal accuse the province of "Nazism"? Would residents of Calgary and Winnipeg call for a boycott of Quebec? Do you suppose the federal parliament in Ottawa would propose legislation to grant citizenship to the illegals (thereby allowing them to sponsor the emigration to Canada of their relatives back in the Unites States)?

Of course not. Anyone remotely familiar with Canadian politics knows exactly what would happen. A situation like the one described above would cause the province to explode.

At the very least, you can bet that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Customs Canada would have tactical units all along the border from Massena to New Brunswick. At worst, there would be war. Francophones would be screaming "Arrêt!" and "Non!" to illegal immigration at the top of their lungs. Canada's leading pundits and politicians would be demanding the preservation of Canadian culture against the onslaught from the United States. All of the obnoxious moral priggishness about "human rights" and "multiculturalism" that Canada has become so famous for would go out the window in a heartbeat, and the Canadians would spare no expense in rounding up and deporting the illegal American invaders.

French-Canadians are extremely prickly about their cultural heritage. Quebec has legislatively forbidden stores to advertise in English and mandated the use of French in public schools. French-Canadians have their own political party, the Parti Quebecois, to promote their interests. In 1995, the province held a referendum and came within one percentage point of voting to secede from Canada.

It is utterly mind-boggling to see the reaction of the cultural and political elites in the United States to the law passed by Arizona last week empowering the state to enforce immigration laws. Cardinal Mahoney of Los Angeles characterized the law as "Nazism," and Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano called it "misguided" and "not ... good."

The Constitution grants Congress the authority to "establish a uniform Rule of Naturalization" and to "repel Invasions." But prominent congressional leaders like Speaker Pelosi and Congressman Raúl Grijalva have taken positions opposing the enforcement of the immigration laws Congress itself has passed.

Even the president has criticized Arizona's law, calling instead for granting citizenship to illegals. What else would you expect from a president who spent his childhood in Indonesia, bowed to foreign emperors, gave a campaign speech as a citizen of the world in Berlin, and who currently has an aunt living as an illegal alien on welfare in Boston? Certainly it is unrealistic to expect that he will serve the interests of the United States.

No sane country has ever elected elites who have systematically undermined their own culture and erased their national borders. Even the French-Canadians know how to stand up for themselves. Who will stand up for the United States and demand, without apology, that the border be sealed and the illegals deported? The Republicans won't do it, the Tea Party is impotent and rudderless, and the Democrats are actively aiding and abetting those who seek to undermine us. If we are unwilling to police our own borders, we are doomed.

I'm not certain what it will take to preserve the United States, but we had better come up with something effective-and soon.

It's been a few days of reflection for me. My Dad was there to help liberate the Netherlands. He always appreciated their continued kindness and thanks. I especially appreciate the dedication at the end of the video to those soldiers who did not give the ultimate sacrifice but came home and tried to live the best they could - and broken they were.
Sadly, my Dad did not bring his best friend home. The look in my Dad's eyes when he spoke about his friend is the one thing I remember the most. Haunting.
Thanks Dad. I never told you in person but I am grateful for the loss of innocence to war and the grace with which you lived every day.

To those who died - and lived - thankyou.

Seems that the 'modern liberal' does not want to strip the really rich. In fact they seem ok with making the chosen ones richer - even if by fraudulent means, a la Al Gore.

The middle class is a far juicer target to tap. The modern liberals, along with the media and the ellite and even some CEOs, see a chance to control the world by redistributing the middle class wealth. A large segment of the population is becoming more dependent on gov'ts by the day and demand their 'entitlements. (Greece riots)

It will be done for some "worthy" and "morally just" cause. Such as global warming. Or wildlife. Or water. Or, simply, 'a just society'.

Yup, they pretend to "help" but their real agenda is to make matters worse. Control through fear and demoralization.

Their playbook; Obey or your world will die. Undermine your economy. Hype pandemics and calamities. Reward failure and punish success. Criminal rights trump victims rights. Hollywood productions are real, it's your world that is unsustainable. The media can make up the news as required, out of thin air (CO2). News backed up by their "sources". Tea Party members are dangerous, not Jihads.

Am I wrong?

They spotted the Taliban soldiers getting ready to attack a British foot patrol.

The sniper, who has not been named for security reasons, was using the L115A3 long-range rifle, which has an effective range of 1,100 metres.

Now you know the reasons why the liberal-left/socialism is allied with Islam:

"Muslims and Westerners: The Psychological Differences

Introduction by Nancy Kobrin, author of The Banality of Suicide Terrorism: The Naked Truth About the Psychology of Islamic Suicide Bombing[1]

When I first read about Nicolai Sennels’ work concerning therapy, which he had conducted with criminal Muslims in Denmark, I knew that it would be groundbreaking. I hope that you the reader will listen closely to what he has to say.

I also had the opportunity to conduct prison interviews of Muslim detainees, which were not interrogations. Minneapolis has the largest diaspora of Somali Muslims outside of Mogadishu, and there was an overload in the county jail. I was trying to decide if I wanted to draw up a research project. Pressured for time and with too many other responsibilities plus receiving a death threat during one of the interviews, I decided against it.

Like Sennels, I came away with a similar sense that Western law enforcement and the general public did not understand why there was so much crime in the Muslim population. And why there has been this problem of jail house converts to Islam who then become radicalized through contact with other criminal Muslims during incarceration.

Islam is the perfect religion to give justification for those who feel under attack and to maintain the eternal “victim" fantasy. Islam is also “higher” than Christianity because it comes last in co-opting the revelations of Sinai and the New Testament. What a perfect receptacle for projecting hatred. Islam incites, encourages and permits hatred of the Jew and Jihad. It’s perfect for a fragile personality that has the need to hate and the need to have an enemy. There are billions of people out there who share those sentiments and that profile. As an underdog religion, Islam provides great mass appeal, which even Eric Hoffer, the author of the True Believer, noted in 1951. It should come as no surprise that its numbers are growing. If one has a grievance, Islam will take care of it.

Sennels adeptly outlines the key problems of why Muslims are not able to integrate into Western culture. What he doesn’t say, I shall name. We are dealing with nothing more than paranoia. Sennels stresses that the West must set boundaries because otherwise they will kill you. This kind of rage is malignant borderline behavior as in serial killing. We must come to understand such politically incorrect observations as Sennels does in order to connect the dots concerning criminal Muslims even though it is brutal.

Happy well-adjusted children do not become suicide bombers nor do they become criminals. Let us choose to know what we are dealing with rather than bury our heads in sand out of terror. Let us meet the challenge straight on as Sennels has. If the Swedes had intellectual fortitude, Nicolai Sennels, the Dane, should be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for standing up and proclaiming that the “Emperor Has No Clothes.” But then again, that is a Danish tale and the Swedes are left with Ingmar Bergman’s drama. Need I say more?"

Posted by: maz2 at May 6, 2010 7:36 AM

Excerpts from David Warren's essay "State Secrets", at his website:

"Speaker Peter Milliken's ruling, that Parliament must find a way for Parliament to review intelligence findings independently of the government of the day, is not entirely without merit. The legislative intelligence committees of the U.S. and some other countries have been known to function effectively, with the security-vetted politicians who sit on them able, within reason, to check their party political affiliations at the door, from a common understanding of the national interest.

Alas, Canada has lagged in finding such an arrangement; until we have come to an age in which 'the national interest' is not among concepts commonly understood." (emph. mine)

"The Speaker's suggestion that he was troubled by the notion that Parliamentarians could not be trusted with sensitive security information struck me as wilfully naïve, and his threat of constitutional crisis to push this point struck me as perhaps something worse. But I know these games play well in the liberal media.

"He told the Harper government, in effect: 'You have two weeks to solve an insoluble problem, to the satisfaction of your political opponents, and if you fail, you alone will be held accountable.' It is of course too late to change, not the government, but the Speaker."

Key words: There ain't no "moderate" Muslims.

"Among Criminal Muslims

Frontpage Interview’s guest today is Nicolai Sennels, a Danish psychologist who worked for several years with young criminal Muslims in a Copenhagen prison. He is the author of Among Criminal Muslims. A Psychologist’s Experience from the Copenhagen Municipality. The book will be out in English later this year. He can be contact at:

FP: Nicolai Sennels, welcome to Frontpage Interview.

I would like to talk to you today about your experience working with young criminal Muslims in a Copenhagen prison. Let’s begin by talking about how you got into your line of work.

Sennels: Thank Jamie.

Well., many people think that I took the prison job because I wanted to get a closer look at Muslim mentality, failed integration and Islam. But I did not. I was just looking for a job and having worked as a social worker taking care of teenagers for several years part time while studying at Copenhagen University to become a psychologist, it was natural for me to apply for a job involving juvenile offenders. I had no idea that seven out of ten teenagers in the average Danish youth prisons have a Muslim background. Since I was the first psychologist at the institution I was very free to develop my position as psychologist.

The main job was to find out the young peoples’ pedagogical and therapeutic needs and develop therapeutic methods fitted for those needs. And this I did and this is what my book is about. The unusual thing about my work is that I found out that my Muslim clients had certain psychological characteristics that my non-Muslim – mostly Danish – clients did not have. They were all between 15 and 17 years old, most of them showed antisocial behaviour and a big part of both groups came from homes with a certain lack of emotional support. I guess nine out of ten were boys and though the main part came from less well functioning homes I also had many Muslim and Danish clients who’s parents and elder siblings were well educated, had normal jobs and so on.

I worked in the prison for a bit less than three years and had around 150 Muslim clients and 100 Danish clients. I conducted group therapies and individual therapies and with such a large amount of both Muslim and non-Muslim clients I had a relatively large background material for understanding and comparing their psychological development and the underlying conditions influencing this development. Normal “real” research projects of this kind – consisting of long and several qualitative interviews – most often only have 20-30 subjects as background material.

FP: Ok, so some of your conclusions?

Sennels: Well, one significant conclusion was that having been raised in a Muslim environment – with Muslim parents and traditions – includes the risk of developing certain antisocial patterns.

About two thirds of all teenagers accused for criminal actions in Copenhagen have a Muslim background. For years the explanation for this phenomenon has been that Muslims are discriminated against by Danish employers and are thus unable to find a job. The consequence is that Muslims are poor – and this poverty then gets the blame for the high crime rate among young Muslim men.

As a humanist and psychologist I have to expose and oppose this faulty explanation. Explaining psychological development and complicated human mental and behavioural patterns by pointing on the amount of kroner, Euros or dollars rolling in to a person’s bank account every first bank day of the month is a very materialistic and two-dimensional view on the human being. What is first of all deciding our actions is our own free will and motivation – which are first of all influenced by the emotional, cultural and in some cases religious frame that we grew up in.

It is easy to establish a statistical connection between poverty and criminal behaviour – but what comes first? I saw a lot of young teenagers sowing the seeds for their own future unemployment by not going to school, staining their criminal records and developing unattractive social habits such as aggressiveness, insecurity and lack of respect for authorities.

FP: Did you find any real differences between Muslims coming from different parts of the Muslim world?

Sennels: My experience from working with Muslims is that the culture developed under Islamic influence supports the development of certain psychological characteristics. I had Muslim clients from most of the Muslim world: most of the Middle East, Muslim countries in Africa, Pakistan and ex-Yugoslavia. I did not register any major differences between the mentalities between these countries. The only real importance deciding the impact of Muslim mentality was whether the client himself identified himself strongly as belonging to the Muslim society or not. There was a quantitative difference from the often less Islamic Muslims from e.g. ex-Yugoslavia and the clients from the Middle East who mostly identified themselves strongly as being Muslims.

By far the most of my 150 Muslim clients expressed strong loyalty to their God, Allah, and their prophet but less than half was actively practising Islam by doing their prayers, Quran studies etc. But there did not seem to be any difference between the actively practising group and the group that could be called loyal but passive believers. Seen from the therapy room, the mentality stemming from Islamic influence on the societies where it is the dominating value system is so strongly rooted in the culture that Muslims are influenced by its dogmas and values no matter if they pray five times a day and can recite the Quran or not."

"Among the many reverberations of President Obama’s election, here is one he probably never anticipated: at least 32 African-Americans are running for Congress this year as Republicans, the biggest surge since Reconstruction, according to party officials.

"The House has not had a black Republican since 2003, when J. C. Watts of Oklahoma left after eight years."

"The black candidates interviewed overwhelmingly called the racist narrative a news media fiction. 'I have been to these rallies, and there are hot dogs and banjos,' said Mr. West, the candidate in Florida, a retired lieutenant colonel in the Army. 'There is no violence or racism there.'"

That's an excellent analysis of the reason why Muslims can't or won't integrate with the west. Their ideology focuses on the group as dominant; individualism simply doesn't exist.

There's no such thing as individual responsibility for one's faults, actions (I did it because YOU have drones in Pakistan; or YOU insulted my religion or YOU...).

There's no such thing as individual responsibility for one's welfare (YOU must provide me with housing, medical care, food..)

There's no such thing as individual reason (my religion forbids/allows...)..and there's no scientific capacity in this group

"An important aspect of this difference concerning locus of control is that people who see their own lives mainly guided by outer factors – a fearsome God, a powerful father, influential imams, ancient but strong cultural traditions – very easily develop a victim mentality. It is thus not without reason that conspiracies and blaming the non-Muslims are so central in Muslim leaders’ rhetoric and politics. This victim mentality also dominates the mentality of Muslim immigrants, who often have a long row of demands for economic support and Islamization of our societies to satisfy their personal needs."

I've been trying to follow the story of the Tamil "refugees" that landed in BC just before Christmas. Initially, they were all arrested and I thought, finally, the government will show some spine in dealing with illegals that try to shortcut the process for coming to Canada. Later, they were all released with little fanfare and most are suspected to be in Toronto where there are already some 200,000 of them. They block roads whenever they want to make a point. Now it appears they are setting up a kind of "shadow" government to parallel the one in Sri Lanka. Surprise--it appears that Canada has 25 "seats" in that particular government.

This is not a big deal except that it's further evidence of how folks come from elsewhere only to clump up and continue their spats from within the safety of Canada, raise money for terrorism and refuse to integrate in the fabric of our society. They enjoy our safety net. They violate our laws and we just take it. It incenses me--I need to go for a long walk to wear off the adrenaline.

Anup Kaphle and Graeme Wood, Back to the Afghan Future: The return of the Gurkhas.

The Gurkhas’ reputation as unsentimental killers has shown no sign of dying down in recent decades. But during their six-month turn in Helmand last year, the signature virtue of the Gurkhas was less their bravery than their culture. NATO has struggled to field soldiers who can relate well with their Afghan counterparts. Nepal is only a few hundred miles from Afghanistan, and Gurkhas share linguistic and social kinships that should make them ideal trainers and partners to the Afghan army. The Gurkhas have a storied past in Afghanistan, too. Gurkha units fought for the British in the Second and Third Anglo-Afghan Wars (1878-80 and 1919)....

Will Liberal Ad$Cam Chretien be well hung?

Wait for da proof:

Jeancula Chretien's Assiom:

"A proof is a proof. What kind of a proof? It's a proof. A proof is a proof. And when you have a good proof, it's because it's proven."

"D. Martin: Chretien says nothing, speaks volumes

Jean Chretien jumped out of his chair and rummaged through a briefcase looking for the cause of his “hanging” on Parliament Hill later this month.
Mr. Chretien wasn’t suggesting a noose, the increasingly likely fate for current Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff. The Liberal prime minister from 1993 until 2003 was talking about the ‘hanging’ of his [...]"

Blame Saudi Arabia:

Shrinivasrao S. Sohoni, The Evolving Situation in Afghanistan and Some Brass Tacks

The roots of the insurgency in Afghanistan, now endemic and infecting countries to its immediate north as well as further afield, are to be found in the ambitions of those who promote, and cooperate to spread, extreme fundamentalist militant Islam, i.e. Wahhabism, and its incitement to violence and the aspiration for global Islamic conquest and a worldwide Islamic Emirate....

This underlying reality is not targeted by the political doctrine, policy, and military operations of the US-led Coalition in Afghanistan, and thus, notwithstanding the stupendous scale of resources deployed in Afghanistan, the Coalition effort is proving to be futile, indeed counterproductive. It is indeed mystifying to see this allowed to happen....

Vίtruvius. My Dad and his outfit participated in the liberation of the Netherlands. The 8th recce had the distinction of Never Having Their Line Penetrated Under Fire.He never bragged about this or ever told me much at all about his experiance in Battle. What I did learn was that a humility for battles won and reverance for those who gave their lives on both sides was the only thing I needed to learn about war.As far as I can tell Dad had no use for anyone who believed honor, pride or celebration had any place for those survivors who came home.

Hold de Mayo. American students are sent home for wearing American colors on what I thought was an American holiday. The Fifth of May doesn't really count for much in Mexico. Imagine what would happen if Nueve de Mayo was celebrated.

IMHO,this would make the first part of a timely juxtaposition.First we have, Derek Lee Liberal MP,who is against expanding the rules on lobbying. He says yesterday, "Let's get a grip on what we're trying to do. The (Lobbying) Act tries to provide transparency, not prohibition," However today ,as said in question period, it appears that Mr. Lee may be actually lobbying while he is also a MP,which is much worse than what Jaffer attempted to do. CBC and CTV have missed this story so far.

"Images show Iceland volcano intensifying"

"The UK Met Office has released a vivid series of images that show the Eyjafjallajokull volcano intensifying.

In the satellite pictures, which use infrared wavelengths, the ash plume appears bright orange and grows larger over time.

The plume gradually increased in size over a period of approximately six hours on Thursday morning."

"'Massive' ash cloud closing western Irish airports

By SHAWN POGATCHNIK (AP) – 1 hour ago

DUBLIN — Iceland's volcano has produced a 1,000-mile-wide (1,600 kilometer-wide) ash cloud off the west coast of Ireland that will force western Irish airports to shut down again Friday, the Irish Aviation Authority announced.

The authority said shifting winds, currently coming from the north, had bundled recent days' erupted ash into a massive cloud that is growing both in width and height by the hour."

"In Iceland, civil protection official Agust Gunnar Gylfason said the volcano's eruption intensified Wednesday and it continued to emit that higher volume of ash Thursday. He said the ash plume's maximum altitude was oscillating between 20,000 and 30,000 feet."

ET: "That's an excellent analysis of the reason why Muslims can't or won't integrate with the west. Their ideology focuses on the group as dominant; individualism simply doesn't exist."

Individualism accounts for the high standard of living and the number of inventions and scientific discoveries in the west. As Ayn Rand was fond of saying, collectivism cannot produce. That goes for systems of thought based on Kantian / Hegelian mysticism (in the west) as well as religious mysticism.

But there are many inventions and scientific advances in the west that come from people with Arabic names, and it's likely that quite a few remain faithful Muslims. So the dichotomy between east and west may not be as big a problem as it appears.

The west should be consistent in its application of individualism, which means the first priority is to eliminate the poison of Kant/Hegel/Marx/Marcuse/etc. from within itself.
