Grey Cup Open Thead (Bumped - Game On!)

Via email;

We are hosting a Peewee hockey tourney in Brandon this weekend. A team from Saskatchewan is clothed in Rider Green and one little guy even has a chunk of his hair dyed green. I asked him if his Riders are going to win on Sunday.....

He looks me in the eye and says...

"I am a Montreal fan..... Mom dyed my hair green... "

Have a great day Rider Nation....!

Computer models project outcome: "Based on pre-adjusted historical data, the Toronto Argonauts should win. But after the adjustments, I'm calling a win for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Toronto today."

WELL, sucks to be us, I guess. Congrats to the Als!

Priceless Kate.

Based on pre-adjusted historical data, the Toronto Argonauts should win. But after the adjustments, I'm calling a win for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Toronto today.

Finally a 'green' cause I can get behind. Only 'deniers' will be cheering for Montreal today.

Posted by: wallyj at November 29, 2009 1:52 PM

wallyj....ROFLMAO...you owe me one keyboard

Posted by: Justthinkin at November 29, 2009 2:06 PM

So far the Sask fans have been the winners.
I hope they are still as happy and having as much fun after the Als take the coup.

So I will be back to yelling "GO STAMPS GO"
next spring.

Other wise at the game today I will just be cheering every great play whether for the green or the blue.

Cheers

Posted by: HaySeed at November 29, 2009 2:11 PM

Although the Roughriders are the guys I'll be cheering for, this is Montreal's year to win.

Als: 34
Riders: 27

Posted by: dmorris at November 29, 2009 2:11 PM

That is funny Kate.

And Oh yeah wallyj, got one die hard in denial Alouettes fan right here in my face -hubby's a fan, so of course I'm going to root for the Riders on this one.
Who ever wins makes and cleans up for nice dinner next weekend.

Games a later start here in Ontario, 4pm, so we'll be into the finger foods as it starts.
At least he's not insisting I wear watermelon rind on my head.

Posted by: ldd at November 29, 2009 2:41 PM

Kickoff at 4:30 Calgary time which I think = 6:30 Ontario time?

Posted by: Banachek at November 29, 2009 3:24 PM

Good one 'Kate'. Will be cheering on the Riders.

Posted by: Merle Underwood at November 29, 2009 3:52 PM

Ah my mistake, thanks Banachek for catching that.
Kick off is 6:30 Ontario time.
It's as bad as calling the Riders the Raiders... oh well my bad again.
:)

It's actually nice to look forward to something on TV.

Posted by: ldd at November 29, 2009 3:58 PM

Anyone know where I can catch the game online in the US?

Posted by: Kyle at November 29, 2009 4:18 PM

Hey Kyle: Here's a PDF file of the U.S. broadcasters, but you might be able to watch via the internet.

GO ALOUETTES! Still I think Saskatchewan is going to win due to the home field advantage - I like him but I don't know whether Calvillo can seal the deal.

Posted by: Ace at November 29, 2009 5:44 PM

LOL!! I want to see your raw data.

Posted by: Louise at November 29, 2009 5:44 PM

Damn frikkin' Canada being so big and all. As one who has to get up early to work in Atlantic Canada, most of the game will be missed as I dream of those wheat wackers slogging out a victory over those bird brains from la belle province. Here's hoping I wake up happy.

btw, I started my Grey Cup celebrating appropriately early (thank G*d for spelchek).

I think I found an error in your computer modeling. You used FORTRAN which works for NFL predictions but here in Canada you have to use THREETRAN for CFL predictions.

Texas Canuck @ 6:22 Wheat wacker? LOL, thank you, other than being referred to as slightly right of Attila the Hun, which was a compliment at the time, this is one of the nicest names for us sod busters (even if retired) that I have heard.

Posted by: Ken (Kulak) at November 29, 2009 8:40 PM

TD Montreal.

Hope SSK dosen't sh*t the bed for the rest of the game.

Heartbreaking. My condolences to the Rider Nation.

Posted by: jwkozak91 at November 29, 2009 9:52 PM

What's wrong with the Saskatchewan education system - don't they teach how to count up to 12?

Posted by: Fritz at November 29, 2009 9:52 PM

Counting to twelve is apparently a big deal. What a way to lose.

Posted by: Lew at November 29, 2009 9:53 PM

Too many players????

I'm speechless....

Posted by: Banachek at November 29, 2009 9:53 PM

If you can't count to twelve, your Grey Cups plans are shelved.

Posted by: Lew at November 29, 2009 9:57 PM

Guess I jinxed you, but really, you shouldn't have thrown that interception, and 13 guys on the field? Wow.

Posted by: Mississauga Matt at November 29, 2009 9:58 PM

Disappointing:(

Posted by: chuzpahticular at November 29, 2009 9:58 PM

What? Everyone knows that both 12 and 13 round down to 10!!!!

Posted by: ∞² at November 29, 2009 10:02 PM

So help me out here... If we went for 2pt convert on the last TD, the best MTL could have got, would be a tie. If the convert would have failed, same result... I was screaming at the TV when they kicked for the 1 point, but I never thought that this would be the game-winning point.

Posted by: Bull at November 29, 2009 10:03 PM

A bad change of personnel gives the cup to Montreal... what a crappy way to lose. Just one set of downs with a first down would have made this unnecessary too... could not close the deal.

Posted by: Dwayne at November 29, 2009 10:04 PM

Lost on a penalty... Who on the coaching staff can't count past 12?

Posted by: djb at November 29, 2009 10:05 PM

In fairness, Montreal had the best team in the league, east and west. Check the record. They deserved this win. My team since the days of Etcheverry and Patterson. Rah Rah Als.

Posted by: Ghost of Ed at November 29, 2009 10:06 PM

BTW: When we (Grey Cup experts) say today, we mean in the year 2100.

Posted by: ∞² at November 29, 2009 10:07 PM

What a fluke win - missed FG taken over for TMMOF penalty Montreal should feel shame.

Posted by: Jim at November 29, 2009 10:12 PM

Unreal. I can't believe that just happened.

To be fair though, SSK's crappy tackling lost them that game. The too many men on the field call was just to top it off.

Posted by: mikeg81 at November 29, 2009 10:14 PM

WE NEED the name of THE player that went on the field when he wasn't supposed to and RUINED everything for for all rider fans! He is going to pay for this (only in the form of public opinion but still. HE WILL PAY).

Posted by: RiderFan at November 29, 2009 10:18 PM

Leave it to the Riders to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory. It's the Canadian way.

Now back to your reguarily sheduleded real football...

Posted by: Shere Khan at November 29, 2009 10:18 PM

No kidding, Shere Khan. I'm only interested in football when the Riders make it to the Gray Cup, which doesn't happen very often. They always seem to come on strong in the first quarter and then gradually peter out and then in the dying minutes of the game, the other team wins. Bah!! Humbug!!

Posted by: Louise at November 29, 2009 10:21 PM

Just got the name. Jason Armstead is THE guy that ruined the grey cup for all rider fans. Well now that we have a name a new game is on.

Posted by: RiderFan at November 29, 2009 10:22 PM

Good Game Riders, tough one to swallow. RIDER PRIDE!

Posted by: CP at November 29, 2009 10:24 PM

It was a mistake, Riderfan. Whoever the player was no one NEEDS the name. I'm sure you'll get the name, but it's retarded to say "HE WILL PAY."

Okay, it's not retarded to say it as of the time-stamp of your comment, but it'll be retarded if you say it two days from now. If you do, move to Uruguay and become a soccer fan.

Good game by the Riders, and congratulations to the...to the...

I can't say it.

HA HA HA HA......THEY WERE SOO EAGER TO WIN THEY ALL WERE JUST DIYING TO GET ONTO THE FIELD AND CELEBRATE BUT AMOGST ALL OF THE EXCITMENT THEY FORGOT THAT THERE WAS A GAME AND THERE WAS A TOO MANY MEN RULE IN THE GAME CAUSING THERE OWN LOSS ....LMAO ....GO STAMPS GO !!!!

LOL JUST KIDDING I WAS ACTUALLY PULLING OFR THEM AS I DIDN'T WANT THE CUP GOING BACK EAST BECASUE IT WOULD BECOME ALL LIBERALISED ,IT WOULD BE A KINDER GENTLER CUP THAT SUPPORTED CLIMATE CHANGE REGULATIONS ,GAY MARRIGE ,MASS IMMIGRATION,ABORTION ,THE DESTRUCTION OF THE CHURCH ,BANNING FREEDOM OF SPEECH ,CARBON TAX,SOCIALISM ,COMMUNISM,MAEXISM,LENONISM,STALINISM, AND ALL OF THE JENNIFER LYNCH'S OF THE WORLD,

CFL is fixed.
They signed their death warrant today.
People will turn away from them in droves.

Think about it.
Even if there was an extra man in the end zone how does that affect the outcome if the kick goes wide?

Bullshit call.
Bullshit league.
I don't care anymore.
Climategate Football League.

And the Lord spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then, shalt thou count to twelve. No more. No less. Twelve shalt be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be twelve. Thirteen shalt thou not count, neither count thou eleven, excepting that thou then proceed to twelve. Fourteen is right out. Once at the number twelve, being the twelth number be reached, then, lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it."

Posted by: Tim at November 29, 2009 10:40 PM

Okay...traditions have to be respected...
Would somebody in Regina please go dump a load of manure on Armstead's driveway so we can get on with thinking about next season...

Posted by: wingwalker at November 29, 2009 10:41 PM

LOL @ Tim. But seriously, we should have converted the last TD. Just sayin'...

Posted by: Bull at November 29, 2009 10:44 PM

Not making excuses here but the "officials" didn't make a fu-king call all night. I counted at least 3 no-yards calls that should have been made but were ignored. A couple more obvious holding calls. But........... when it comes to counting too many players on the field - wellllll thank god those officials can count.

Sorry Montreal...tainted victory. You know in your heart of hearts that the Rider is the team that really won this game.

Posted by: a different bob at November 29, 2009 10:45 PM

Paul - in Calgary. Tell me, buddy - how many points were the Stumpeders away from winning this game.

We beat the snot out of your team all season long - deal with it you looooooooooser.

Posted by: a different bob at November 29, 2009 10:47 PM

So what am I missing that people are slagging Armstead? If you've got no one in the end zone, Montreal can just run down and jump on a missed field goal for a touchdown. Nope, not his fault.

Posted by: Mike Mc at November 29, 2009 10:47 PM

Couldn't agree more Different BoB...

"Not making excuses here but the "officials" didn't make a fu-king call all night. I counted at least 3 no-yards calls that should have been made but were ignored. Facemasks, late hits, holding and clipping...and the worst is that TSN didn't seem fit to show the replays over and over again of the suspect plays as they did with Montreal.

Where were these refs from?

Posted by: Rednik at November 29, 2009 11:01 PM

Who let Gantefoer and Wall do the counting?

Posted by: Rider Fan at November 29, 2009 11:02 PM

The Riders settled for 3 points at the end of the first half.. on the 2 yard line with 2 sec..

Worst offensive play calling ever, they dominated and then left the game to be decided by the defense...Championship teams play to win for 60 minutes, especially in the CFL

BAD COACHING.. couldn't win a high school game

Posted by: Phillip G. Shaw at November 29, 2009 11:03 PM

Go down to downtown Calgary right now with that attitude, your cap key will be turned off right quick.

Posted by: Rednik at November 29, 2009 11:11 PM

Additional Comment:
The Rider Problem is best described by the action of NFL defensive Coach "Buddy Ryan" when he punched out the offensive Coach (ARZ) that wouldn't even try to make a first down.. Buddy called it bull-shit football

Posted by: jwkozak91 at November 29, 2009 11:23 PM

Just before the first half was over Sask had to run two yards to get a touchdown but end up taking a field goal funny how that comes around and bites you on the arse Sask.

I said that when I saw they went for a field goal. They were dominating Montreal the first half and to pull a chicken stunt like that cost them. Wasn't the 13th man per se, but bad calls.

Sask choked with mistakes. From the running the ball out of bounds on a kick off return near the end of the game to throwing an interception to having more than a 3 man rush, Sask lost the game.

Posted by: john brooks at November 29, 2009 11:24 PM

Whoo-hoo, Paul! Yeah, Baby! One more! And then another! You won the battle!

Next up: purgatory.

Happy Monday morning!

Posted by: EBD at November 29, 2009 11:27 PM

Heartbreaker.
If it makes Sask. fans feel any better, all the Montreal fans lost their money by not covering the spread.
Riders players won the game, riders coaching lost it.

Posted by: doowleb at November 29, 2009 11:34 PM

a great victory for Montreal! what a fight to the finish and never-give-up attitude.

The Grey Cup returns to its original, spiritual and rightful home.

Posted by: chumpdawg at November 29, 2009 11:38 PM

Paulgary - hope you feel like you just won the cup. Fact is Paulooser - your team was watching it from their 50 inch plazma - just like the stuff they were pumping into their arms during the playoffs.

Paul - you know? - plasma???? Like the stuff they pump into your arm when you have nothing left.

Paul - you have nothing to contribute to this discussion. Go back to practice field.

Posted by: a different bob at November 29, 2009 11:39 PM

I vote Joe for snark of the game. THREETRAN, jesus, my laptop is soaked!

As an expat Montrealer, you know where my heart is at. But lead only on the last play of the game penalty with no time left? "Argos!"

Congrats to the Riders for an outstanding season and playoff run. You are the reason why many Easterners were watching the games all year. Excellent job!

Posted by: cal2 at November 29, 2009 11:44 PM

My, my. We're a bit testy aren't we, fellow Riders fans. I had no idea the game of football was such a blood sport. I thought hockey took that prize. Grow up. We lost. Get over it. Congrats to Montreal. Good to see you back.

Posted by: Louise at November 29, 2009 11:48 PM

The day that football died.
The CFL died on that field today.
Just like the NHL died when Brett Hull 'scored' that goal.
My son will play neither sport because if he's good enough they will let him cheat to win.

I'm a Bomber fan.
I was until they let the Aspers have the team.

I renounce the CFL.

It doesn't matter anymore.
(Did it ever?)
Fug them all.

Tainted win.
Those Montreal players are gonna be pariahs in sport.
2009 Black Sox.

Again, I don't give a damn about the CFL anymore.
So take that Cohon.

Posted by: G.,,, at November 29, 2009 11:50 PM

Curious,

You beat me to it!
I also heard that the Als slogan is "Play for the day" and the Riders have "The 13th man makes all the difference". (I'm not kidding..that's what the broadcasters said). Any truth to it? (What irony if it's the Rider slogan).

G.,,, think about it. If you understand football, the 13th man would make a difference.

Posted by: Garry at November 29, 2009 11:54 PM

Riders played a great 3 quarters. I can't believe the Als came back. This is a real heart-breaker for the CFL's greatest fans.

Condolences from a Calgary based Bomber fan and western booster. Enjoyed all the green goings on here over the past week.

Who knows how these things happen? A mixup from lots of guys standing on the sidelines and stacking up to try to block the field goal(?)

Hard not think about the field goal decision near the end of the first half. Maybe this was more of a factor than the TMM penalty.

Best, Bart

Any one who watched the game knows the story:
They beat Montreal.... but lost the game.

Posted by: eastern paul at November 30, 2009 1:29 AM

As a Toronto fan.. Go Argos! er.. Go Leafs! er.. Go Jays! er.. Go Raptors! er.. Go Marlies?!

As always, it was an exciting game, unlike so many Super Bores south of the border. I can understand why Rider fans are kicking themselves, and why Als fans are thinking they stole one. As a football fan, I thought it was great that the last minute was so back-and-forth. I really didn't know who to cheer for, and thought it was great when it appeared the Riders had won, and then thought it was just as great when the Als came back from defeat to win. The real winners are Canadian football fans - we got a great treat to end the season. Now, on to next year!

Go Argos! er...

Posted by: KevinB at November 30, 2009 1:45 AM

For some reason I was more traumatized by the heartbreaker in the '76 game. Perhaps it was because I was much more under the influence than I was during this game. I remember at the time that we were all for lynching Ted Provost for letting Tony Gabriel get loose in the end zone. As we learned later, it wasn't Provost's fault at all. Someone else blew the coverage. So let's dispense with any talk about demonizing today's 13th man.

Posted by: biffjr. at November 30, 2009 1:55 AM

Good half from the Riders, but a game is 60 minute and the Als showed why they are the best. Great comeback from a deficit, gutsy 2 point conversion, persistence in the face of adversity,Rider defence gave up in the 2nd half, and lack of Rider discipline giving the Als a second chance, which they made the most of.

Nope, Riders didn't deserve to win and it would have been a fluke if they had. No killer instinct in the 2nd half along with the 13th Man did the Riders in.

Chin up, Riders, it was great entertainment!

Thanks!
