America's still not ready for a Rocky Horror Picture Show Revival.
Posted by Kate at November 24, 2009 8:39 PMThese people don't make music. They celebrate sex. For four-year-olds to watch. You want to impress me? Flaunt your "risqay" sex in Saudi Arabia. Now THAT I would like to see.

Posted by: Kate at November 24, 2009 9:03 PMI'm with you Kate: pop culture is powerful, but it shouldn't be. Pop culture has more influence over our children and teenagers than do books. And it is sad that Adam Lambert and his filth is considered the new "cool", by a bunch of childless hippies who love the "anything goes" artsy-liberal world.
Until they become more educated and experienced, and realize that "antyhing" should NOT go. Until they realize that Adam Lambert's filth is more damaging to our culture than entertaining, and their liberal base is tied with immaturity. Thank goodness they are a minority.
Before anyone jumps on me for posting pop culture crap - I have my reasons.
Hey, until the majority of Americans can name the five rights granted in the First Amendment rather than the five members of the Simpsons family, pop culture is fair game.
As to Lambert (and any other oversexed celeb), if you don't want people commenting on your sex life, don't turn the stage into your bedroom. I'm sick and tired of being told of the glories of libertine sex, and chided as a prude and a homophobe for not decreeing it the noblest of all freedoms.
Oopsie, both links go to SDA archives.
Is this about that frickin' x-rated show Oprah Winfrey's company is planning? I'm SO happy I don't get TV anymore, oh yes I am. They are just racing full throttle for the bottom, with nitrous button held down hard.
I'm going to love watching the scummy b@st@rds splash when they finally get to bedrock.

Posted by: Kate at November 24, 2009 9:23 PM"Adam Lambert Sets Back Gay Rights 20 years"
Not from me, it is from V the K at Caption this,
but I agree with it,
such shocking displays - just as gays doing sexual acts in public, not faking it but actually doing it in public at various gay pride parades - are totally COUNTER-PRODUCTIVE for the gay rights people.
Posted by: Friend of USA at November 24, 2009 9:27 PMOoooh, American Muoooooosic awards. Same doo doo, different pile.
So far I've been able to avoid knowing what the esteemed Mr. Lambert actually did, just that he did something... objectionable.
Ignorance is bliss. ~:)
Posted by: The Phantom at November 24, 2009 9:28 PMSome Adam Lambert lyrics that sound to me like either forced sex or rape,
... ... ...
Let's go
It's my show
Baby, do what I say
Don't trip off the glitz
That I'm gonna display
I told ya
I'ma hold ya down until you're amazed
Give it to ya 'til you're screaming my name
No escaping when I start
Once I'm in I own your heart
There's no way you'll ring the alarm
So hold on until it's over
Oh, do you know what you got into?
Can you handle what I'm 'bout to do?
'Cause it's about to get rough for you
I'm here for you entertainment
... ... ...
Think of the 15 year old girl that was gang raped by about two dozen young men for two long hours a couple weeks ago behind a high school in the USA... were they playing that song as they were raping her?
I would not be surprised at all.

Posted by: paul at November 24, 2009 10:31 PMIs this the Freddie Mercury thread?
I'm surprised Kate that you would celebrate the life of one of the most flamboyantly open gay men and deride another.
Just because pop stars (and artists in general(but not always)) get their freak on doesn't mean that we should all panic... remember nipplegate and the costume malfunction? Madonna and Britney kissing? Did Ed Sullivan show Elvis gyrating his hips? All of the Pastors Wives were screaming "think of the children" every time.
This is just the same, but different.
After all of this though, I will fully grant you that Freddie Mercury was a genius and this guy is a clown.
Posted by: Jon at November 24, 2009 10:33 PMFriend of USA:
Did you know when you play his records backwards they play satanic messages?
Have you heard of this stalker named Sting?
Every breath you take
And every move you make
Every bond you break
Every step you take
Ill be watching you
How dare they play him on the radio? Can't the government do something to censor these images and ideas that make me uncomfortable?
Posted by: Jon at November 24, 2009 10:40 PMI see you missed the point there Jon.
Posted by: Texas Canuck at November 24, 2009 10:46 PMFreddie Mercury was a great entertainer who primarily relied on his musical talent,
Adam Lambert is an entertainer who appears to primarily rely on his exhibitionism.
I'm surprised Kate that you would celebrate the life of one of the most flamboyantly open gay men and deride another.
So far as I'm aware, Freddie Mercury didn't get it on with Wayne and Garth in "Bohemian Rhapsody." And Mercury could sing Lambert under the table. But since you brought it up, I have to say I mourn the fact a remarkable musical talent like Mercury was lost because we value libertine sexuality over the dignity of a human being.

That's a question only a bigot would even think of asking.
Posted by: Kate at November 24, 2009 10:56 PMIn the event that I'm being too hard on you - I don't deride Lambert because he's gay. I deride him because he's an over-rated showboater.

Jon,
Actually the government already does that but very selectively,
for example you can not quote a Muslim who says Muslims are reproducing like mosquitos and will take over western civilization, this will get you in front of the Human Rights Courts.
Or you can not publish a caricature of a typical muslim terrorist, the governement will stop you.
Any thoughts on that Jon?
I will not hold my breath...

Posted by: wingwalker at November 25, 2009 1:24 AMI find it hard to believe that you didn't see Freddie Mercury as a showboater as well. That is because in terms of showboating rock stars, Freddie Mercury is up there with Mick Jagger.
What you, and everyone else hate about Adam Lambert is that he is a no talent clown who is trying to use his "personality" to sell records. I would say in a manner similar to Carly Simon telling everyone that "You're so vain" is about someone famous, but never revealing the fact of who it was.
His gayness should be totally beside the issue, and there are so many reactions on this site (not yours Kate) that seem homophobic because they instantly assume he's a deviant because of his sexuality.... when the plain fact is that there have been sexual deviants of various types over time (see my first post)... and that social conservatives always fret that this is going to be the thing that will ruin our children.
And in terms of the 70s being more straight forward. You are commenting on a douche who won a TV singing contest, not hip dude rock bands (which of course still exist). To compare someone like that to King Crimson, or The White Stripes is just dumb.
For Friend of USA: What does Mark Steyn have to do with this? And how does anything I've written give you any clues to how I feel about the CHRC?

Posted by: Jon at November 25, 2009 1:37 AMJon I am not comparing anyone to King Crimson! I was merely pointing out the degradation of what has become of music and entertainment.
Posted by: Warren Z at November 25, 2009 1:41 AM"I find it hard to believe that you didn't see Freddie Mercury as a showboater as well."
oh no doubt he was, as illustrated very well here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PY8rQHbuFtQ
but he earns a pass because he had obtained fame using his talent first. ;)
Warren Z,
I like all the bands you mentioned. And I think you'd like guys like Matt Mays, Joel Plasket, Grizzly Bear and Blitzen Trapper...
The music industry is the same crap. As I said earlier this is just a clown who won (he actually lost) a signing contest. There were tons of singing contest shows in the 70s when you were digging on Floyd, but I'm sure you'd have a hard time remembering who won them.
This is a tempest in a tea pot and the more socons fret about him the more kids want to act like him...
I worry that a lot of socons (and I'm not saying you're one) don't understand that "cool" can pretty much be defined as the opposite of social conservatism... with very few exceptions.
A quick list:
Stem Cells -> may save millions of lives -> cool
Abortion -> don't have to have a baby -> cool
Jazz music -> do drugs and make it up as you go -> cool
Socialism -> I get paid even if I don't work -> cool
I don't agree with everything that is cool, but I'm pretty sure that's the definition.
Posted by: Jon at November 25, 2009 2:16 AMSorry to disappoint you Jon but I am a dyed in the wool Socon though I do like and respect your tastes in music.
Posted by: Warren Z at November 25, 2009 2:33 AMWarren,
I have no problem with Socons, as they form a good majority of the only conservative option in Canada. I also don't think we libertarians give the socons enough credit for keeping us from becoming further normalized to socialist thought. I am worried though that we (the collective we) will eventually have to disagree and tear the right apart again.
Is it possible to permit abortions and have low taxes?
Can we destroy the CWB and still fund local (and sometimes offensive - think piss jesus) arts projects?
Fortunately though the left seems to be splintering or prisming faster than the right.
Thanks about the music as well.
Posted by: Jon at November 25, 2009 3:08 AMI suppose people are either spitters or swallowers. Call me a spitter. Adam Lambert's "music" is crap. Utter, unequivocal, festering excrement. Now that we've got that straight, however, what we are seeing is that it won't be enough to happily tolerate gay people in this brave new world. No, we will have to celebrate the most deviant behaviour they can come up with and attempt to literally shove in our faces.
Posted by: Thomas_L...... at November 25, 2009 9:58 AMHis gayness should be totally beside the issue, and there are so many reactions on this site (not yours Kate) that seem homophobic because they instantly assume he's a deviant because of his sexuality.... when the plain fact is that there have been sexual deviants of various types over time (see my first post)... and that social conservatives always fret that this is going to be the thing that will ruin our children.
You have a point, here. Lambert pointed out in reaction to the criticism that other performers do this all the time (didn't Lindsay Lohan and Madonna kiss once?). He's right.
It's not acceptable. Gay or straight, the hyper sexualization on television is unacceptable. I turn it off, but I also know that if more people do that, entertainers will wake up, because it's hard to get sponsors for a show that no one's going to wash because it's just this side of porn.
Also, one the news this morning, it was said that what Lambert did LIVE was NOT what had been rehearsed. He didn't tell ABC of his, ahem, plans or reveal them in rehearsals, which also speaks volumes about the message he was really trying to send...
Posted by: Amy P. at November 25, 2009 10:02 AMAnd that should be "watch", not wash, in the third paragraph...good gracious, I need caffeine!
Posted by: Amy P. at November 25, 2009 10:04 AMWith the demise of MJ in June it has left a huge void in the freak show entertainment market.
Looks like this Lambert kid is making a serious move to hitch his star to become the racketed-up version of the dearly departed MJ.
Jon,
You can not even read your own comments right!...how could you read mine???
Here is what you said,
"...How dare they play him on the radio? Can't the government do something to censor these images and ideas that make me uncomfortable?..."
No one is talking about Mark Stein, but YOU are talking about the government stopping people from saying stuff that makes other people uncomfortable.
And yes I think a song that seems to promote rape is going too far.( Lambert's song not Sting's)
I do not care if it is gay rape or heterosexual rape.
It is going too far.
So how will you misinterpret this comment ?
Posted by: Friend of USA at November 25, 2009 1:24 PMFriend of USA:
My first comment was mocking you for digging deep to find lyrics that can be interpreted.
My second comment was making fun of you for thinking that lyrics in a pop song are at all grounds for a rape that happened. That's why I pointed out all the other 'outrages' that you and the nanny patrol go on with pop culture. How many people have been stalked because of Sting? Or does your morality only extend to modern "cool"?
When someone who is a self described libertarian (me) responds to someone like you wanting to ban a song because of it's lyrics; you are permitted to assume that they are mocking you.
When I say "Can't someone do something to censor these images and ideas that make me unconfortable?" you have to understand that I also wrote "All of the pastors wives are screaming "think of the children"". I am making fun of idiot busy body social conservatives for find "open" rape in a song, so long as they omit certain lines and listen to it in a certain way.
Did you miss when I talk about playing his records backwards to hear satanic messages? How about the part when I mockingly lamented allowing Elvis to move his hips on the Ed Sullivan show?
Context is everything my daft compatriot.
Amy P,
I agree with you but the last paragraph. The famous Madonna Britney Christina Kiss that the MTV MVAs was also done without running it by the directors.
I'm all for tasteful entertainment but also reasonable accommodation. I think ABC can reasonably use the Madonna Britney Christina Kiss, and the Superbowl Wardrobe Malfunction as cover for the move to cancel his appearance on GMA.
Finally:
The behaviour of Lambert is no worse than that of Chad from Nickelback. Chad has actually convicted of drinking and driving at high speeds in a lambo... he's a legitimate danger to society, but no posts about his deviant behaviour.
Rock stars are rock stars, even minor stars (or gas giants) like Lambert. To try and control their outrageous stupidity is to drive kids to them.
