The Sound Of All Hell About To Break Loose

The Hadley Climate Research Unit has been hacked;

An unknown person put postings on some climate skeptic websites that advertsied an FTP file on a Russian FTP server, here is the message that was placed on the Air Vent today:

We feel that climate science is, in the current situation, too important to be kept under wraps. We hereby release a random selection of correspondence, code, and documents

The file was large, about 61 megabytes, containing hundreds of files.

It contained data, code, and emails from Phil Jones at CRU to and from many people.

I’ve seen the file, it appears to be genuine and from CRU. Others who have seen it concur- it appears genuine. There are so many files it appears unlikely that it is a hoax. The effort would be too great.

Here is some of the emails just posted at Climate Audit on this thread: http://www.climateaudit.org/?p=7801#comments

Yowza.

Air Vent link here.

Update

The director of Britain's leading Climate Research Unit, Phil Jones, has told Investigate magazine's TGIF Edition tonight that his organization has been hacked, and the data flying all over the internet appears to be genuine.

In an exclusive interview, Jones told TGIF, "It was a hacker. We were aware of this about three or four days ago that someone had hacked into our system and taken and copied loads of data files and emails."

"Have you alerted police"

"Not yet. We were not aware of what had been taken."

Jones says he was first tipped off to the security breach by colleagues at the website RealClimate.

"Real Climate were given information, but took it down off their site and told me they would send it across to me. They didn't do that. I only found out it had been released five minutes ago."

TGIF asked Jones about the controversial email discussing "hiding the decline", and Jones explained what he was trying to say….

James Delingpole of the Telegraph (UK) - "If you own any shares in alternative energy companies I should start dumping them NOW."

These emails are damning stuff, suggesting collusion, conspiracy, and suppression and manipulation of data on the part of leading "climate" scientists. Read Andrew Bolt for some of the highlights.

Lots at Climate Depot, too.

Climate Audit is still being slammed, so you may have a lot of trouble getting in there.

Wow, if this is true, I think the CRU is toast. All of their emails will be released via "Freedom Of Information" request as . FOI, what an Orwellian name for a law that really protects government bureaucrats and not the people they are supposed to serve.

"Hadley CRU hacked with release of hundreds of docs and emails
November 19, 9:42 PMEssex County Conservative ExaminerTerry Hurlbut

The University of East Anglia's Hadley Climatic Research Centre appears to have suffered a security breach earlier today, when an unknown hacker apparently downloaded 1079 e-mails and 72 documents of various types and published them to an anonymous FTP server. These files appear to contain highly sensitive information that, if genuine, could prove extremely embarrassing to the authors of the e-mails involved. Those authors include some of the most celebrated names among proponents of the theory of anthropogenic global warming (AGW).

The FTP link first appeared on a blog called The Air Vent. The blog's owner, identified as "Jeff Id", downloaded the file, examined it, and posted a brief summary on his blog. Another commenter, identified as "Steven Mosher," passed the information on to Steven McIntyre's Climate Audit blog and to another blog, The Blackboard, run by a blogger identified as "Lucia." Most recently, blogger Anthony Watts, who runs a blog titled "Watts Up With That?" mentioned the FTP archive in his own blog.

Commentary on all the blogs involved has been brisk, except, oddly enough, at The Air Vent, where only seven comments have been received.

The FTP server is in a Russian domain and uses the anonymous FTP protocol, which does not require a pre-registered user account or password for downloading. The file is named FOI2009.zip, an apparent reference to US Public Law 89-554, 80 Stat. 383, the Freedom of Information Act.

Some of the most embarrassing e-mails are attributed to Philip Jones, the Director of the CRU; Keith Briffa, his assistant; Michael E. Mann of the University of Virginia; Malcolm Hughes at the University of Arizona; and others. One such e-mail makes references to the famous "hockey-stick" graph published by Mann in the journal Nature:

I've just completed Mike's Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd from 1961 for Keith's to hide the decline. Mike's series got the annual land and marine values while the other two got April-Sept for NH land N of 20N. The latter two are real for 1999, while the estimate for 1999 for NH combined is +0.44C wrt 61-90. The Global estimate for 1999 with data through Oct is +0.35C cf. 0.57 for 1998.

The emphasis in the above quote was added.

As embarrassing as the e-mails are, some of the documents are more embarrassing. They include a five-page PDF document titled The Rules of the Game, that appears to be a primer for propagating the AGW message to the average subject/resident of the United Kingdom. The document suggests that it is a precis of a longer document housed at the Web site of the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs."

Looks like this is going viral...

Cheers

I posted a comment at WUWT about how much time we should spend on it. Being curious, I'm sure that everyone will want to download their own copy as I did but IMHO it is worth 1/8 of our combined brainpower to analyze in detail while we use the remaining 7/8 to see what kind of deception this might have been should it turn out to be one. To decide if you immerse yourself in the file for days to weeks or continue on as normal flip a coin 3 times. If you get 3 heads in a row start going through the file (I got 3 tails so the file will sit temptingly on my hard drive for now).

Here is a group of people whose "science" is (unfortunately) being relied upon to set major policy by nearly every country in the world, and yet they appear to be a bunch of utterly immature juveniles.

Of course, why should we not be surprised.

I hope this thing turns out to be as big as it looks.

Posted by: TJ at November 20, 2009 1:48 AM

Just looked at the contents very briefly and it appears they uploaded the whole show.

Looks like it includes Mann & Briffa data sets, program files, old program files, map plots, including propaganda methods to change public perception etc.

Somebody dumped a whole lot of data out there for a reason...

This appears to support the "tailor the data" to the theory story.

I would agree with ChrisinMB way too much data for a simple hoax, somebody has gone to a lot of trouble here to get this all out.

HOT Proposal - Page 7

"Climate change scientists are unable to define what would be an acceptable level and time-frame for global concentrations of greenhouse gases to be stabilised. This is because the evaluation of climate change risks is essentially a political issue. Moreover, scientific uncertainties make it very difficult to assess the likelihood of possible climate change events and thus to quantify the risks of climate change. In short, the climate change issue is characterised as an unstructured problem where both the values at stake as well as the science is uncertain and subject of debate."

Nice. They then cut and pasted a bit:

http://www.ivm.vu.nl/en/Images/HOTF9D983D0-265E-48CE-A18FED7DFD1D1DB8_tcm53-102575.pdf

"Problem
How does HOT help?
The ultimate objective of the Climate Change Convention (UNFCCC) is to stabilize greenhouse gas
concentrations at levels that prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system.
Climate change scientists are unable to define what would be an acceptable level and time-frame for
stabilizing global concentrations of greenhouse gases. This is because defining acceptable and
unacceptable risks of climate change and climate change policies is essentially a political issue."

Ummm...yeah. And we should trust these people...why again?

Well, we want to stabilize gases at some level. But we don't know what the acceptable level is.

Thinking people everywhere need to rise up and call bullshit on this whole operation. These are desperate people trying to justify their high paying paper pushing jobs. Nothing more.

Just keep remembering that this whole thing got its wheels by journalists becoming celebrities (or vice-versa). Or maybe it was pseudo-scientists becoming celebrities, it's hard to tell these days.

Honesty somehow got thrown under the bus, sacrificed to negligent "go-along-withism", willful myopia and a determined effort to NOT perform due diligence.

The next "crisis" will be the notion of government financially bailing-out the newspapers because of their current state, in the name of preserving the freedom of the press.

These so-called scientists are all in cahoots, scratching each others back, and all utterly consumed with their belief that global warming is occurring.

This truly is a remarkable release of data, for it not only shines yet another light on the global warming farce, but it shows you what a joke the so-called "peer review" process is in area of climate science.

We all knew the thing was a racket, and these files are the clearest evidence of that yet.

Why is it that our free society's mechanism for providing untainted information to the people has consistently not looked into and evaluated the "deniers'" input?

If you have a religious belief in your group's end goal, no lie you tell to achieve that goal is morally wrong. Or so you think.

Half of the climate fear-mongers believe that the wealth redistribution aspect of Kyoto is the end goal that justifies any means; the other half believe the threat of the supposed pollutant CO2 gives them license to deceive the public. Both halves are dangerous religious crazies.

Me: I bow down to whoever hacked and distributed this stuff. What a service to humanity.

I wish I could get the same quality of exposed conspiracy in regard to Environment Canada's campaign of blacklisting my research -- and possibly other similar, related bad acts over a longer period of time (dating back to before we had e-mail or for that matter, global warming).

I've heard some of the details from people who didn't want to go on the record, and it's the same sort of stuff, let's feather our nests and keep out anyone who wants to do any real work.

So over the years, if this was the same attitude as other national weather services around the world, it's no surprise that a culture of mediocrity and cynical indifference to real scientific integrity developed, and global warming or climate change was the perfect boondoggle to wring vast amounts of money out of nervous and anxious governments.

There are some good people working in these places, but I get the strong sense that they are afraid to speak out because they know it would mean social ostracism and possible removal (not firing because it's hard to fire a swivel servant) -- but then, when I say good people, I suppose that good people would be more courageous than that.

It is a national disgrace that in my own case, not one person out of thousands who might be in the know has ever stood up and said anything. That would have made Stalin or Hitler proud, a 100% compliance rate with some official policy of state-sponsored deception. In our own case, the government doesn't know a thing about it -- I tried that approach, my MP gave it a valiant effort in all fairness to him, but he ran up against a total brick wall of silence and in the end he died and was replaced by a university Liberal climatologist. I figured that was probably the end of my window of opportunity to get relief from my MP.

Decided to go my own way as the internet age blossomed and many alternative discussion groups came into existence. The end result is that I now expect some of my ideas to percolate into the next generation of researchers, but probably not with much effect until long after I'm gone.

There are many similar stories, I am sure. You have to figure that the lack of real progress in long-range forecasting must be due to something other than the complexity of the challenge, perhaps it's due more to structural weaknesses in the established science of meteorology and climatology. The bad show of the climate change crowd is a very good indicator of how low the bar is in this science, when compared to astronomy or organic chemistry. The sad thing is, the rest of the scientific community figures that their colleagues in the atmospheric sciences must be up to par, they came out of the same universities etc etc, so they take their announcements at face value and give their prestige and credibility to the IPCC nonsense, without ever doing their own investigation of it. Too bad we don't have the likes of Einstein around in this generation to take a quick look at the quackery of the climate change "science" -- I'm pretty sure he would make short work of them.

I hope this proves to be legitimate. If true, this was not just harmless 'fudging' of data, it was deliberately deceiving the public (via the media) to achieve political goals. Those who have used and abused science in this manner should be publicly stripped of all their titles and charged with fraud. The economic damage caused by the AGW scam is exponentially more harmful than Madoff.

More importantly, will incandescent lightbulbs get a pardon? I hate CFLs. :)

Timed to be just prior to Copenhagen

Whether it came fom Russia, who likely arent interested in Carbon Caps, should be interesting.

The sad thing is this has moved out of the realm of scientific inquiry and into the partisan realm, actually it did so a while ago.

Heck even Gore just admitted that only 40% of warming can be attributed to CO2, that doesnt make it true, it just means he has backed off his initial fundamentalist position that there was a near one to one correlation between CO2 rising and temp rising.

If people have been playing fast and loose with the science, as it appears, then a loss of position, tenure etc, a professional court martial so to speak, is well within the realm of possibility.

Posted by: Stephen at November 20, 2009 8:11 AM

Global Warming will go down in history as the greatest fraud ever perpetrated. Equally, the corrupt politicians who tried to backdoor billions will go down in history as the biggest crooks that ever exhaled CO2. And finally, the issue will be remembered as the one that put the final nail in the coffin of the tree-murdering MSM.

Lorrie in my view has been one of the few MSM people willing to comment on AGW or cap and trade which of course is the Kyoto siamese twin of the AGW hoax in my view.

I was a bit skeptical at first, until I read this (via a link at andycanuck's (9:07) link:

"HadleyCRU says leaked data is real.

"The director of Britain's leading Climate Research Unit, Phil Jones, has told Investigate magazine's TGIF Edition tonight that his organization has been hacked, and the data flying all over the internet appears to be genuine.

"In an exclusive interview, Jones told TGIF, 'It was a hacker. We were aware of this about three or four days ago that someone had hacked into our system and taken and copied loads of data files and emails.'

"'Have you alerted police?'

"'Not yet. We were not aware of what had been taken.'"

Jones says he was first tipped off to the security breach by colleagues at the website RealClimate.

"Real Climate were given information, but took it down off their site and told me they would send it across to me. They didn't do that. I only found out it had been released five minutes ago."

IF - big word - this is true and the Cons go ahead and follow the US on Cap & Trade they deserve to be thron out of office. They should say they are sorry by following the advice given them and state they will continue to fight pollution in Canada. They should also send the rsearcher on polar baers to conference - was rejected because he did not go along with the trend, and his denial of Global Warming.

By Christmas we will know where the Cons stand on Global Warming/Climate Change. We already know the Bloc, Non Democradic Party and LIEberals stand, and if Iffy is smart he will be the first to change his mind thereby granting him a small amount of honesty. It will take a great keader to confess he/she was wrong and discontinue the Global Warming religion.

Let's be careful. It is possible -- not likely, just possible -- that whoever illegally accessed CRU's systems has edited the files for extra impact before publishing them. AFAIK Phil Jones, head of CRU Hadley, has only confirmed that CRU were hacked, not that the files were accurate.

I really, really hope that really, really soon someone will ask him whether any of the files are inaccurate.

OF course these files will be determined by "official" investigation to be false regardless if they are or not. So we can have some fun in the mean time but this will be swept under the rug very quickly and it will be made to seem that the "Deniers" and specifically Climate Audit (been a thorn in AGW side for a long time)jumped the gun or were complicit in some way in order to derail Copenhagen.

The AGWers will use it as a call to arms because the evil deniers will stop at nothing to distort the truth, and in this firestorm the only thing we will never know is what the real truth is.

This is a no win for the truth as to the authenticity of these files, far too many people in far too many high places would be affected.

Sorry but it far too political an issue to be derailed by something as annoying as the truth or a lie, which ever this is.

"*Václav Klaus: ‘Largest tax increase in world history’

Despite huge spending, it has not been proved that the human effect on the climate is significant

By Václav Klaus

Many thanks for the invitation and for the courage to organize such an important gathering in the moment when political correctness tells you not to do it.

We are meeting one month before the Climate Change Copenhagen Summit and several weeks before the U.S. Senate hearing regarding the cap-and-trade scheme. For these reasons, today’s meeting can’t be an academic conference, even though the topic still needs academic discussion. There is no consensus — neither in science, nor in economic analysis or politics.

I have already been at a UN Summit in Copenhagen before. It was in 1995 at the so-called Social Summit. At that time, the Summit was attended by then U.S. Vice President Al Gore who — so it seems — will be there again this year. I did also attend, as Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, but I don’t plan to go there now. I don’t see any chance to influence the results or to be listened to.

In 1995, there were huge demonstrations organized by all kinds of anti-establishment groupings - from socialists and greens to anarchists and anti-globalizationists. I have never seen such clashes between demonstrators and police and army forces before. The difference is that I don’t expect any demonstrations in Copenhagen now. The anti-establishment people have in the meantime become insiders and will be sitting in the main hall. This is a shift with far-reaching consequences.

My views on the doctrine of global warming and especially on the role of man in it are relatively known. My book with the title Blue Planet in Green Shackles has been already published in 12 languages and, two and a half years after its original publication, I don’t have any urgent need to rewrite it.

We should not forget how the doctrine of global warming came into being." (more)

Honestly, I hope all these charlatans and their preachers (Gore, etc.) eventually rot in hell. They have severely damaged the reputation of good science, and they have willingly perpetrated one of the greatest frauds ever on mankind, driven by their lust for a new world order.

These emails and data might not be the final nail in their coffin, but they are a huge step forward in putting these crooks out of business once and for all.

Professor Michael E Mann, director of Pennsylvania State University’s Earth System Science Centre and a regular contributor to the popular climate science blog Real Climate, is another prominent climatologist who features in many of the email exchanges. Mann said: “I’m simply not going to comment on the content of illegally obtained emails. However, I will say this: both their theft and, I believe, any reproduction of the emails that were obtained on public websites, etc, constitutes serious criminal activity. I’m hoping that the perpetrators and their facilitators will be tracked down and prosecuted to the fullest extent the law allows.”

I was wondering if the theft of not genuine emails would constitute criminal activity that Mr. Mann would like to have tracked down?

As a long time anti-AGWist, after checking the emails, documents, and software code, all I could say to myself last night was "How sweet it is!" as said by Jackie Gleason so many times.

Davidian Scarezuki, back in the later 1980s, said that the sea-level would rise by a meter by the turn of the century. So I did my simple math homework from the available data at the time, tuned in to John Daly (RIP) and wrote so much on so many blogs (not called blogs then).

In the later 1990s, when trying to explain to colleagues why AGW is nonsense, a rather well-known scientist stood up, came over, and actually punched me. The place went deathly silent as this fellow (his face a sort of red/purple/blue) stormed out of the room. How sad it was.

But, as somebody across the pond said a few years back -- when it comes to matters as important as global-warming, truth is not important.

Alas, the MSM will echo that sentiment into their silent bull-horns.

No matter how "sweet it is" to us, the small dead animals who are starting to come to life.

The E-mails we were glad to share

I have reviewed papers for journals for many years, and have had over 20 of my own publications peer reviewed in respected journals (IEEE journals for example).

As someone who understands the peer review process I can tell you that reading some of the emails makes me cringe.

It would not be as big a scandal if these jokers were colluding in some obscure field in order to artificially prop up each others research (that has been known to happen too).

But what makes it a scandal is that these jokers are working on "science" that is being used to decide policy for the world's major economies, and policy on how billions of dollars of hard earned tax dollars will be spent.

They should be ashamed of themselves.

Well, after reading their posting on http://www.realclimate.org/ regarding the hack, I believe we are correct in calling them deniers.

This gives our timid, CINO government a reason to stand up like men (or women) in Copenhagen and propose an end to this ongoing circus, but will they take it?

Probably not unless the furore expands to major proportions and they can position themselves with the skeptics without harming their polling numbers.

I think they could have done that before now, but as with the Section 13 issue, they lack the basic cojones to try anything more daring than tax cuts and patriotic displays.

So what's it going to be, more kowtowing to China, or responsible government for democratic societies?

Phil,
Here are some speculations on correcting SSTs to partly explain the 1940s warming blip. If you look at the attached plot you will see that theland also shows the 1940s blip (as I’m sure you know).
So, if we could reduce the ocean blip by, say, 0.15 degC, then this would be significant for the global mean – but we’d still have to explain the land blip. I’ve chosen 0.15 here deliberately. This still leaves an ocean blip, and i think one needs to have some form of ocean blip to explain the land blip (via either some common forcing, or ocean forcing land, or vice versa, or all of these). When you look at other blips, the land blips are 1.5 to 2 times (roughly) the ocean blips—higher sensitivity plus thermal inertia effects. My 0.15 adjustment leaves things consistent with this, so you can see where I am coming from.
Removing ENSO does not affect this.
It would be good to remove at least part of the 1940s blip, but we are still left with “why the blip”.
Let me go further. If you look at NH vs SH and the aerosol effect (qualitatively or with MAGICC) then with a reduced ocean blip we get continuous warming in the SH, and a cooling in the NH—just as one would expect with mainly NH aerosols.
The other interesting thing is (as Foukal et al. note – from MAGICC) that the 1910-40 warming cannot be solar. The Sun can get at most 10% of this with Wang et al solar, less with Foukal solar. So this may well be NADW, as Sarah and I noted in 1987 (and also Schlesinger later). A reduced SST blip in the 1940s makes the 1910-40 warming larger than the SH (which it currently is not)—but not really enough.
So ... why was the SH so cold around 1910? Another SST problem? (SH/NH data also attached.)
This stuff is in a report I am writing for EPRI, so I’d appreciate any comments you (and Ben) might have.
Tom.

Well, that did it for me. Off with their heads.

Good Job Kate.

Oh, this is so sweet! Even the MSM will not be able to bury this; if anything, as the fetid smell of scandal keeps wafting from the CRU, the MSM will happily turn on them to feed their news cycles.

Al Gore's hopes of becoming the first "carbon billionaire" are now rapidly fading; I'm hoping to see the day when the Canadian media starts saying "Oh Suzuki! You got some 'splaining to do!"

At realclimate they are in full denial mode. It is amusing to watch.

In response to one comment they state:

[Response: This is a typical over-reaction. Perhaps you are unaware that almost all journals demand that you submit names of potential reviewers as part of the submission? ... gavin]

Holy smokes, Gavin and company are desperate. The above statement is an outright lie.

"The Sound Of All Hell About To Break Loose"

Except not at CBC or CTV or the Hope & Frail yet.

Potentially the biggest story since whenever and they don't even bother to report it.

Hope they like the taste of crow.

These same "organs" refused to tell the public about the Car-B-Qs in Paris that were going on every single night for 2 weeks.

Glenn Beck wasn't on Fox back then.

HA! Fox has it up on their website now!

"Leading British climate centre hacked

E-mails and documents have been taken from the University of East Anglia.

One of Britain's leading climate-research centres has had more than 1,000 files stolen from its computers and republished on the Internet. The cyber-attack is apparently aimed at damaging the reputations of prominent climate scientists.

The University of East Anglia's Climate Research Unit (CRU) in Norwich confirmed today that e-mails and documents dating from 1991 to 2009 were illegally copied and subsequently published on an anonymous Russian server.

A link to the Russian server first appeared on 19 November on a relatively obscure climate-sceptic blog. The server was shut down just hours later, but the stolen material had already been distributed elsewhere on the Internet.

"We are aware that information from a server used for research information in one area of the university has been made available on public websites," says Simon Dunford, a spokesman for the University of East Anglia. "This information has been obtained and published without our permission and we took immediate action to remove the server in question from operation."

The volume of the information is too large to "currently confirm that all of this material is genuine", Dunford says, adding that the university will undertake an internal investigation and has already involved the police in the enquiry.

Some climate-sceptic bloggers are already poring over the posted material, which includes e-mails allegedly sent by the CRU's director Phil Jones to fellow climate researchers, including Michael Mann at Pennsylvania State University in University Park. Mann is the author of a widely cited assessment of past climate records, known as the hockey-stick graph, which shows a pronounced global-warming trend during the latter part of the twentieth century.

"I'm not going to comment on the content of illegally obtained e-mails," says Mann. "However, their theft constitutes serious criminal activity. I'm hoping that the perpetrators will be tracked down and prosecuted to the fullest extent the law allows." Jones declined to comment on the matter.

With less than three weeks to go until the start of the United Nations' climate negotiations in Copenhagen, Mann doubts that the timing of the attack is a coincidence. "The deniers will probably do anything they can to distract the public from the reality of the problem [of climate change], and the threat that it poses," he says. "Cherry-picked, out-of-context quotes, stolen from private e-mails, is the best they've got.""

Back in the day one of the great advances in human civilization was the separation of Church and State. Now is the time we institute a separation of Science/Academia and State.

New fresh thread above, this one is getting too long.

I wonder how long it will take for the "SUICIDES" to start occurring.

I alway believed it was a scam and tried to convince as many people as I could. Now we have proof that not only was the science bad but there was conspiracy too!

Cheers!
