Hot Off The Dogwalk

WSJ - Can The Snood Save Christmas?

This holiday season, retailers are betting big on the snood, a cross between a scarf and a hood that, when worn over the head, is reminiscent of a babushka.

The trend emerged on the Fall 2009 runways of designers like Missoni (knit snoods) and Burberry (plaid snoods) and also made an appearance in the commercial collections of Donna Karan and Yves Saint Laurent. Now it's gone mainstream, with retailers ranging from American Apparel to Zara getting behind the loopy style with snoods of varying lengths and monikers. The British version of GQ magazine's Web site recently posted a "Guide to Snoods," suggesting wearers try it "over a chunky knit or tailored jacket."

Maybe. Maybe not. But on a practical note, they're just the ticket for girls whose ears keep falling in their dinner.

Aren't you going to show us yours, Kate?

It's not simply similar to the old headscarves but has overtones of a hijab...the way that westerners, going to Islamic countries, fling scarves over their heads to 'conform' to the Islamic code..even though they themselves are not Muslim.

Posted by: ET at November 9, 2009 2:31 PM

Yup. Made me think of the hijab. Of Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton putting a scarfy-thing over their heads in submission when going to Islamic nations. So much for standing up for womens' rights...

And that "snood" thingy, well, perhaps it's evidence of Islamization via the fashion design industry.

Posted by: Canadian Sentinel at November 9, 2009 2:34 PM

Yes, I had to dig kibble out of the empress Theodora's ear feathers the other day. She won't wear a hijab/snood, though.

Posted by: Charles MacDonald at November 9, 2009 2:35 PM

ROFL!
The model in the second picture really has the most bitch'n hair though, no?

It's like the old neck dickies(sp) gone sloppy.

Mind you, easy to cover the female head real quick for those unplanned theraputic sessions of terrorism, hijacking or bombing.
Or will make excellent extra bandage material in a pinch.

As long as we aren't forced to go "Snuggie" - even more cultish looking than the "snood". Ha ha, to "save Christmas"

Posted by: Erik Larsen at November 9, 2009 2:46 PM

wow! I must be a whole 20 years ahead of this trend! Didn't know what they called them, but I used to wear these when Snowmobiling and skiing all the time. :D

Posted by: ChrisinMB at November 9, 2009 2:53 PM

Severely off-topic - but this merits mention - B'nai Brith Canada has a full page ad on the back of the first section of the National Post - entitled "The Unholy Alliance" . . . "Common Objectives of Nazism & Radical Islam".

Very, very interesting. Sure to generate lots of follow-up . . . . .

So does a basket and a trip to Grandma's house come with it? Watch out for those dastardly wolves!

Posted by: pkuster at November 9, 2009 3:10 PM

ChrisinMB

A Snood should not be confused with a Balaclava.

Posted by: SDH at November 9, 2009 3:12 PM

I'll bet they'll be popular with the female liberals in the House of Commons.

What is it with dog breeders that continue to reduce the canine genetic imprint to the point of ridiculousness!

I think that's what I'll wear on my next bank job.

Posted by: Ghost of Ed at November 9, 2009 3:28 PM

Why is it whenever there are photos of humans and animals wearing identical clothing (or whenever it's time when SDA juxtaposes), it's the animals that have a look of complete shame...

Posted by: Bruce Strang at November 9, 2009 3:37 PM

No snoods around here thank-you very much. It might get caught in the PTO shaft.

Posted by: The Glengarrian at November 9, 2009 3:55 PM

I thought snoods were those clumps of snow that build up behind your tires and are oh-so much fun to kick off, until you find one that's made of ice...

Posted by: Yukon Gold at November 9, 2009 4:03 PM

Except those aren't snoods, they're cowls or over sized scarves. A snood is a hairnet or other covering meant to cover the hair at the back of the head and the nape of the neck. Think of the hair coverings worn in the mid 1800s, the late 30s and early 40s, or by Mennonite women today.

In a word: no.

Don't ask me why, Kate, but I think that's the sweetest line I've yet to hear from you. You have a soft side after all, don't you.

"ChrisinMB

No, wasn't thinking of a balaclava. They didn't cover the face. I was thinking more of the fleece neck warmers/hoods that I used to wear under my helmets.

Posted by: ChrisinMB at November 9, 2009 4:14 PM

"And that "snood" thingy, well, perhaps it's evidence of Islamization via the fashion design industry."

As long as they don't touch tight jeans, high heels, bossommy shirts and mini skirts and go to the potato sack and welder's mask look...I won't worry too much about that big ass scarf thingy. ;)

Kathryn is right and I think they were big in the 40's (or 30's?), not merely as sanitary devices in food preparation, but as fashion. some have described some nuns head coverings as snoods also.

Posted by: larben at November 9, 2009 9:41 PM

Delightful! Especially that one with the ears issue.

Posted by: LindaL at November 9, 2009 9:51 PM

Right you are Katheryn; a good looking snood was often worn by Vivian Leigh in her role as Scarlet in 'Gone with the Wind'.

This looks like a shawl. Shawls are very functional if you are not required to do anything but walk around or sit; they keep a person warm. If they are hoodie type things like the fair lassie at the bottom models so well, then you can perform various activities wearing them; the only restriction of the latter is peripheral vision. For the last reason, this type of headgear should be banned for people riding bikes or driving vehicles.

My grandma used to wear a shawl when it was raining outside or when she needed a new hairdo.

I doubt that this will be a fashion changer (too fussy). I think it is more about being PC to the Islamic world - 'pushing' the west toward fashions that promote the subservience of women - eg: head down, hair covered...

Posted by: Jema54 at November 10, 2009 1:39 AM

Kate; any way to confirm whether 'new' and 'info' are the product of a rogue random word generator?

Posted by: DaninVan at November 10, 2009 4:29 AM

Jema54 - Nothing wrong with a woman donning a headcovering when entering a place of worship. It shows respect and a little modesty, something sadly lacking in today's fashions that seem to be bent towards making our young women look like whores; most of it designed by men interested mainly in men.

Posted by: larben at November 10, 2009 10:41 AM

New/info = one brain cell between them.
Any men wearing snoods this season, because I like to be on top of these fashion trends ;)

Posted by: gobi desert at November 10, 2009 11:33 AM

btw Kate, nice that it is an Afghan dog wearing the burka -- er snoody thingy.

Posted by: gobi desert at November 10, 2009 11:35 AM

Good one 'Kate'.

Posted by: Merle Underwood at November 10, 2009 1:01 PM

An Afghan? It's not a Saluki?

Posted by: Mike James at November 10, 2009 3:16 PM

Afghan, of course. Lazy of me not to try Wikipedia first. Someone must have used a pound of cornstarch on that coat.

Posted by: Mike James at November 10, 2009 3:19 PM

A Quote I found interesting:
"When I, a thoughtful and unblessed Presbyterian, examine the koran, I know that beyond any question every mohammedan is insane, not in all things, but in religious matters. I cannot prove to him that he is insane, because you never can prove anything to a lunatic - for that is a part of his insanity and evidence of it."
Mark Twain.
