The One Bright Spot: "isn't all that well known"

During a media panel I attended in Regina last week, we were asked for our thoughts on the political prospects of Dwain Lingenfelter. I answered this way - "He has the same problem as Michael Ignatieff. The campaign signs will read "Saskatchewan. Not worth living in unless they make you Premier."

So two years after the election here's the bottom line: The Sask. Party (despite a worsening economy and ministerial miscues) appears to have increased its support by almost nine percentage points to 59.5 per cent from the 50.9 per cent it received on election night two years ago. The NDP (despite a reinvigorated leadership race and new leader) sees its support dramatically slip by almost 11 percentage points to 26.4 per cent, compared with the 37.2 per cent it got in the 2007 general election.

This is heart-stopping news for Saskatchewan New Democrats who need to do some serious soul-searching as to where they have gone wrong.

And that won't be particularly easy to do, because -- by every indication right now -- it appears their biggest tactical error has been selecting Dwain Lingenfelter as leader.

Good times!

a mole sent in from Nexen to the NDP party , how much cooler can you get than that!!!

ForLorne Calvert , on the outside looking in, and little D. Wayne , on the inside looking out.

Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch!!

is'n't' that odd....while skimming over this article i had to go back and reread it...i could have sworn it said 'darwin' lingenfelter...

Thank you Mr. Wall for that information.

Lorne Calvert was a good man!! Sadly, good men are devoured by heathens. Lorne was a United Church minister, fair and honest. Lingenfelter is an opportunist. He has one fence to cross. Brad Wall. That won't happen for a while yet.

wasn't too long ago the united church pulled out the pulpits and put in fruit stands.

the United Church in Canada stands firmly in the Dipper Camp.

Posted by: cal2 at November 6, 2009 12:28 PM

I believe they call it The NDP At Prayer.

The United Church is so generic they should repaint their buildings yellow.

Kind of tough for the NDP to do a little 'soul searching', I mean, first they have to find someone with a soul and they, and most of their acquaintences are sadly lacking one of their own.

Uh yeah, sure. Calvert was and to my knowledge still is, an asshole.

By their very definition, the NDP will not be able to improve their standards in the polls. They were born on a socialist platform and have lived all these years in the socialist mindset. To change that is to cease to be what they are. It will never happen.

The NDP left this province in great financial shape after bringing back from the brink of bankruptcy after Devine and his cronies were finished; with whom incidently Wall was employed. Leave Wall and his band of fools in long enough and we'll be dealing with another looming bankruptcy that the NDP will have to clean up.

T, people left in droves when your commie buddies were in power. Now that the red menace is on ice, people are returning. Just think T, all those non commie voters returning. Must give you nightmares I'll bet.

As long as "what's good for Saskatchewan is bad for the NDP" holds true the Dippers are f'd.

Posted by: Indiana Homez at November 6, 2009 4:15 PM

methinks T has a gubmint job somewhere in Regina.

Posted by: cal2 at November 6, 2009 10:54 PM

Terry Anderson- Calvert- an asshole perhaps, but a polite asshole.

Cal2: "methinks T has a gubmint job somewhere in Regina."

methinks T is the perfect illustration of why the NDP are history.

Meanwhile, among the great unwashed, 59.5% would vote for Brad Wall again, compared with 26.4 per cent for the NDP. Har, har, har. Take that T!!

Posted by: Louise at November 7, 2009 6:56 AM

"methinks T has a gubmint job somewhere in Regina."

Or a cushy position in the upper echelons of a large union. A vibrant, successful Saskatchewan under the Sask Party compared to years of despair and stagnation under the socialists. It must be frightening to those of T's mindset who are bewildered and confused at the sight of the province finally moving forward. They lash out pathetically with lame and tired references to Grant Devine.

All the right wingers never actually deal with the Devine saga; that this province was literally bankrupt after he and his cronies were done with this province and oh how many of Devine's ministers and MLAs, including the deputy premier, went to jail for fraud and theft. They stay clear of that issue too. Thank god the NDP will be there to pick up the pieces after Wall and his inept crew are done driving this province back to bankruptcy and lining "private" enterprise pockets.

Posted by: T at November 7, 2009 10:21 AM

Like NDP's lining their own pockets from charity bingos, the property of jewelers, through home renovations, subsidized housing in Toronto, etc, etc,...

"Thank god the NDP will be there to pick up the pieces"

Yeah ... let's sit around and wait for our equalization cheque from Ottawa. In the meantime, we can start a potato farming enterprise and p*ss away a few million dollars while we're engaging in a massive witch hunt. I heard that Lorne McLaren bought a saddle without authorization. Let's nail him.

You bring new meaning to the word "deluded".

Posted by: biffjr. at November 7, 2009 1:28 PM

Lorne McLaren, former Labor Minister did far more than buy an unauthorized saddle, that was another MLA. McLaren did federal time for fraud to the tune of $800,000 of tax payers money.

Posted by: T at November 7, 2009 1:38 PM

I stand corrected. It was, in fact, Gerald Muirhead who bought the unauthorized saddle.

I do, however, stand by my statement that the entire fiasco was a gigantic witch hunt orchestrated by the NDP in an unsuccessful attempt to implicate Grant Devine.

Posted by: biffjr. at November 7, 2009 1:55 PM

If they had done nothing wrong there would have been nothing to find regardless of who did the hunting. Don't forget it was the prosecutors who decided that there was enough evidence to prosecute, many of whom are still employed with the dept. of justice. Don't blame the NDP because the Conservatives got caught with sticky fingers.

Posted by: T at November 7, 2009 2:31 PM

Yeah, and what they did was so accepted that the new gov't at the time brought in new rules to shield the MP's from similar charges.

(notwithstanding those who actually did deserve their punishment, I'm talking about the vast majority that were "charged" by the NDP)
