I like these tangos you've been playing, Vitruvius.

In the case of the store owner vs. shoplifter, shoplifter is offered reduced sentence if he testifies against store owner" G&M

"a court transcript shows that Mr. Bennett received 30 days in jail, rather than the 90 requested by the Crown, because he said he would testify against Mr. Chen"

yup, if you're going to catch something in these times, it may as well be tango. thanks Vitruvius. Fausta's been with the tangos (Lessons!) for awhile as well. and tonight for example...

you're ok BM?

Posted by: marc in calgary at November 5, 2009 9:11 PM

I would be, marc, if people stopped calling me BM :-) (I wonder if Quentin forsaw this problem?)

I'd ask you how you're doing, but this ain't no chatroom! I was just in Calgary (airport), though, and it's rather nice weather you're having.

I'll check out Fausta, because I love a tango.

I am elated to say that Dan Brown's latest, "The Lost Symbol" is lacerated in a critique by Philip Hensher in the Spectator magazine though I'm sure it couldn't be worse than the Da Vinci Code. Tis a pity seeing as it vilifies freemasonry. Though I don't mean to sound ultramontane, the Roman Church has done plenty wrong, but it never has wrapped its beliefs in mystery.

this from a certain off-beat web site:

The Iran-Contra Scandal is first reported in "Al Shiraa", an obscure Lebanese magazine. The public would come to learn that millions had been paid for US weapons and equipment for Iran in exchange for the release of American hostages in Lebanon. Profits were illegally channeled to the Contras fighting the Sandinista government in Nicaragua.

"European liberals are in shock over Barack Obama's failures

It is no coincidence that Barack Obama held a key campaign rally last year in front of hundreds of thousands of adoring Germans, as though he were running for Mayor of Berlin. Obama remains in many ways a quintessentially European politician, a firm believer in big government, large-scale state intervention, social liberalism, supranational institutions, and the projection of soft power abroad. His political philosophy is frequently more attuned to Brussels or Strasbourg than it is to Washington.

For a host of reasons however, President Obama is increasingly viewed by his natural allies in Europe- the left-wing intelligentsia in particular – as a mounting disappointment, whether it is dithering over attending the climate change summit in Copenhagen, supposedly ignoring the momentous changes within the European Union, making little progress with the Middle East peace process, adopting protectionist trade policies, a lack of commitment to human rights, the list goes on.

Significantly, there have even been some attacks from the left on Obama’s failure of leadership on Afghanistan. No matter how hard Obama tries to appease his supporters in Europe by presenting American power in a softer light, the president of the United States is still going to let down those who backed him most strongly."

Now, Ms. Riley's head has exploded*.

"As for Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff, his clumsy effort to straddle the fence on every issue is becoming laughable."

"New Democratic Party leader Jack Layton, a founder of the venerable White Ribbon campaign to end violence against women, stood by mutely while 12 of his 36 MPs voted with the Conservatives to kill the registry."
...-

*An appalling betrayal

What a bitter spectacle: MPs from all parties, except the Bloc Québécois, caving to a decades-long campaign by disgruntled gun owners, to U.S.-inspired attack advertising in targeted ridings and to self-interest to issue a death warrant to the long-gun registry.

The symbolism could hardly be more poignant -- well, yes, it could be. Our parliamentarians missed the 20th anniversary of the Montreal massacre, which inspired the creation of the registry, by a month."

"N.S. gets blast of wintry weather

Nova Scotians woke up this morning to the first blast of Old Man Winter.

Snow, slush and wind turned roads into slippery messes and caused traffic delays throughout Halifax Regional Municipality.

As motorists tried to cope with the weather conditions, Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning, calling for up to 10 cm of snow, mixed with rain for coastal areas, and 15 cm of snow inland and over higher terrain. The snow is expected to change to rain later today."

Peter Foster pulls back the mask .

[This week, German Chancellor Angela Merkel told the U.S. Congress that inaction on climate change amounted to a new “Berlin Wall” of “short- sighted self-interest.”

Ms. Merkel’s claim was upside down. There is indeed a new threat to freedom in the offing, but it is the Green Wall that she is recommending. It will span the globe, and there will be no escape.]

“Balloon Platoon” uses new PSS to fight insurgents

The newly formed “Balloon Platoon” at the Edmonton Garrison are a group of keen young soldiers learning the capabilities of Canada’s new Persistent Surveillance System (PSS). As members of Task Force 3-09, they will be the first soldiers to use this C-IED (Counter Improvised Explosive Devise) system in theatre...

The PSS is a helium-filled balloon, which suspends a state-of-the-art imaging system. This simple mix of old and new technology has the potential to severely limit the ability of insurgents to wage war in Afghanistan. The system is, in turn, tethered to an earth station via a thin, Kevlar control cable...

Memo to Liberal Iffy, and the MSM, and his/its swine flu snake oil salesmen/women:

Your hoax/scam is busted, wane says.

There was no swine flu “pandemic”.

Where are the reports of swine flu deaths on Indian reserves?
…-

“Dr. Robert Schabas, medical officer of health for the Hastings & Prince Edward Counties Health Unit, said data collected in his region shows the number of people being diagnosed with swine flu, as well as school absenteeism rates, is on the decline.

“We peaked about 10 days ago,” said Schabas. “We’ve been watching the number come down for a few days now. We expected to see the same pattern across all of southern Ontario over the next week or two.”

Schabas said people in his region, as well as those in the Leeds Grenville and Lanark counties, can “relax a little bit” knowing the worst is behind them.

He also said he’s not in favour of healthy people continuing to be vaccinated.

“To be honest, I was never entirely convinced people should have been vaccinated in the first place, given that the risk was so small,” said Schabas.”

T-Boone has second thoughts on Gore Green.

*U.S. energy magnate T. Boone Pickens plans to give Canadian investors a chance to piggyback on his investment strategies – for a price.*

`*Mr. Pickens has recently agitated against the United States' importation of oil and advocated alternative energy forms. But the new fund makes no promise of being exclusively clean or green – it says stocks in its target space include those of drillers, exploration and production companies, and refiners.*
