I just saw a teaser for CBC's "The National" (hey, I LIKE the Mercer Report... sue me) where they appear to possibly be criticizing Obama.

Can it be? If anyone can actually watch Mansbridge without puking, I'd be curious to find out.

Have they tried turning the heater on !!??

Can you imagine how fast an electric heater would drain the battery ? Ever tried driving heaterless in Canada ?

[ Cops based near Oxford in the UK have revealed that they are unable to to use flashing blue lights on their new electric car - in case it drains too much power from the battery.

The Thames Valley police force is testing out the £20,000 ($33,000) Mitsubishi iMiev in an effort to improve its environmental credentials. Apart from this quite obvious setback, they have been pleased with the silent, emission-free car, capable of travelling 100 miles on a single charge (with the lights off).]

curious_george - that's funny!

Pretty sketchy - they should have sprayed them with Tamiflu

And, back to semi-serious mode - there are SO MANY problems with product labelling. I recall some actions to try to remediate the problems.

I just remember getting some awesome honey from my SK farm cousins. Shortly after that, I read about "Produced in the USA" Chinese originated honey - that had tons of crazy crap in there (to meet sugar and protein content requirements).

We have little idea what we're putting in our gaping maws most of the time. Cheers, Erik

Robert in van: you beat me to it.

The Va vote was expected if not by quite as large a margin as it looks to be, but the Christie win is huge and may be the signal event of the beginning if the end of obamaism.

Christie was a weak candidate in the eyes of many (including me) he ran a poor campaign, a third candidate was pulling at times 20 % of the vote almost entirely from Christie, corzine out spent the GOP by at least 6 to one and this was a state that has been dem for decades and voted by a margin of 15% for Obama last november. And the potus campaigned there for five days including on Sunday.

Yet Christie wins by 6%. And gets the independent vote by a 2 to 1 margin.

Make no mistake this is a big loss for Obama and it will likely doom any meaningful obamacare bill and cap and trade may now never come to a vote in the senate (it has no chance regardless).

Most dems in congress who are in swing seats will now abandon their allegiance to Obama like rats from a sinking ship. Their mandate from now until next novemebr will be to save themselves - screw hopey-changey. And many will likely become more vocal criics of the potus and his agenda - that's where the votes are and the GOP has yet to move to fill the gap (see new York district 23 to get proof of it).

Posted by: Harry at November 3, 2009 11:39 PM

What went on in district 23 was very important to the GOP. Its establishment got kicked in the teeth.

Polling in the us reveals that more Americans identify themselves as conservatives than do democrats. The GOP get less than the dems. Red toryism is largely dead in Canada. The third segment of the GOP - the big government north eastern establishment part is getting put into the woodchipper as i tap this. Long overdue and the likes of Gingrich and frum -two guys I like and agree with on many issues - need to realize that the party has moved on and they need to close ranks.

CTV just reported the Liberals under JC signed a 10 year deal back then with vaccine maker to supply vaccine to Canada. Contract worth over 300 million dollars over 10 years. Then the vaccine maker makes a one time donation to Liberal Party of Canada for 56,000 dollars. I wonder how Liberal lap dog Warren Kinsella will spin this one? Warren K. was the back room boy of the Liberal party so you just have to know this is rotten. Warren Kinsella on his blog has been hammering thre PM S Harper for the vaccine shortfall. Well, the blame should fall at the feet of JC, WK and the Liberal Party of Canada as it it was them who cut this deal. FU Kinsella you loud mouth prick.

3 years from today and counting down B. Hussien...

and I'm in total agreement with Gord Tulk @ 11.04, Obama has not seemed too interested in having 2 terms, in fact he seemed quite content to have his changes made in one term knowing that he didn't have a chance at 2 terms. However that may be, the democrat majority he's been counting on will need to start their campaign for next year, within the next 2 months, the decisions will need to be made, to sink with ObamaCare / Cap + Trade or to find their own way...
I think the democrats will find it real difficult to go with "their values" and stick with Obama. Will they turn the flames up for Fox News?

oh we know where their dinner's hanging.

I'm a bit curious if the "big 4" Tv networks in the USA will stick with him to his end... I hope so.

What these 2 state governor races show is that David Frum's theories on politics are COMPLETELY WRONG. He is a RINO through & through.

He has stated unequivocally that Republicans cannot win unless they come Democrat-lites.

So if one "has to eat crow" if a prediction turns out to be wrong, what should Frum put on tomorrow's menu for his GIGANTIC PREDICTION BLUNDER?!?

Posted by: Robert W. (Vancouver) at November 3, 2009 11:54 PM

The dem won ny23 49 to 45 with the lame duck RINO getting 5. This is not a "win" for the dems as most of the GOP stood on the sidelines (most notably Romney) not providing manpower or money to the RINO.

This is too sweet. The scorpions in the left-wing bottle have begun to battle. Chris Matthews - surprisingly - takes the first stab:

"While discussing exit polls showing low numbers of younger Democrats heading to the polls in Virginia, Chris Matthews cut off Larry Sabato when talking about the high expectations some might have had for Obama's first year in office.

"They're wrong and misinformed," said Matthews.

"The netroots people out there that think you can change the Congress overnight legally and civilly are wrong," Matthews continued. "It takes a strong majority to bring big change. Somebody should have told them that."

Matthews added: "You can't order change in American government as easy as 'mommy, give me some pancakes.'"

http://www.politico.com/blogs/michaelcalderone/1109/Matthews_Netroots_are_wrong_and_misinformed.html

perhaps that "somebody" should have been Matthews. God knows he has said bugger-all about this before now.

That's why they refer to it as "Piled Higher and Deeper":

National Post, Monday, article written by a Ph. D.

Daily users of crack cocaine have a fourfold higher incidence of HIV infection.

His solution: "Get addicts off the street and under the public health umbrella."

I agree with ending the pointless war on drugs. But "public health" is an anti-concept that means "nanny state", as this example shows; it's just another excuse to spend tax dollars.

If people want to use drugs, I wouldn't step in their way, but I have better things to do with my money than to enable them to indulge their habit. Don't you?

Toronto Star editorial, Monday, re the Globalive telephone company being refused a cellphone licence.

The editorial says (1) the CRTC did its job because foreign ownership is not allowed; (2) Canadians need more competition in cells; (3) our foreign ownership restrictions have to be respected.

Although the CRTC is one of those parasitical organizations that produces nothing of value for Canadians, a body that should be abolished, there's not much doubt it upheld the law as it stands in this case. But the clowns who write editorial policy at the Star don't seem to understand that any kind of "ownership restrictions" diminish competition, by definition. I can't even think of a reason why a phone company should need a licence to begin with. Other than establishing some kind of property rights in the bandwidth it uses, there's no need for government involvement at all. The same principle applies to cable, TV and radio, etc.

The company in question is based in Egypt and operates widely throughout the Middle East. I'd be a little skittish if it were a state-run company, particularly if it were trying to buy up Canadian businesses like those Chinese miners a few years ago. But barring that, what's the problem?

Having ownership of a Ph. D. does not preclude one from arguing that black is white.

Globe and Mail, Tuesday, letter from a university professor; both he and it shall remain nameless:

He writes (referring to an Oct. 31 article) that "The American people may have struck a 'Lockean' bargain in which the state guards natural rights ... but not on the terms that Locke proposed". He quotes John Locke's Second Treatise on Government: "no one ought to harm another in his life, health, liberty or possessions ..."

He concludes, "It is time the United States accorded its citizens the full slate of their natural rights", without actually expounding on what the full slate comprises. But the context is public health care, and he's attempting to argue that there is a "right" to it.

Unfortunately, "harming one another in possessions" includes levying the taxation that would be needed to pay for it. There's a clue to the true right that ought to be respected.

There is nothing natural about these phony health (or education or housing) "rights" claims whatsoever. Nothing can be a right if it has to be provided through the resources of other people. Period.

Funny you should ask, as my husband just mentioned to me that "Obama's in trouble." When I asked why, he said because the CBC ran a report last night that was deeply critical of the Obamessiah and the "talking heads" who promoted him. Some guy on the report apparently said that the U.S. was high on opium when they voted for BHO. He also said that in Obama's first year, nothing's been accomplished. Mmm. Mmm. Mmm.

FINALLY, some people are waking up from this nightmare ... though it's going to take a long time for the US to extricate itself from Obama and the Chicago gang's dreck.

Sigh. It's a hollow victory for those of us who have known since Day-1 that the BIG O was a BIG ZER-O. So much damage done ...

"The Strasbourg court found that, 'The compulsory display of a symbol of a given confession in premises used by the public authorities … restricted the right of parents to educate their children in conformity with their convictions.'"

Yeah, sure. Can't a parent simply explain the significance of the crucifix, which has meaning for the majority of Italians, and then explain to their child(ren) why it's of no importance to THEIR family? Isn't that genuine education, not banning the centuries old symbol? I hope the Italians fight this ruling, though I'm not holding my breath.

It’s the same in the States, they say.

Line dancing, too:

Music by Johnny Cash: “About 20 nurses walked the line to screen out the ineligible.”

“I keep a close watch on this heart of mine. I keep my eyes wide open all the time. I keep the ends out for the tie that binds”
…-

“A long day and long lines at Glendale swine flu clinic (ObamaCare Preview)

Long lines at public flu clinics — initially intended to primarily serve the uninsured — are now commonplace nationwide as doses of the vaccine remain scarce. Many clinics report seeing large numbers of people who have insurance but have been unable to get H1N1 vaccines from private doctors, who say they have either already run out or have yet to get any.

The line at the Glendale clinic, the first to be held in that city since Los Angeles County received doses late last month, was the longest yet, county Department of Public Health officials said. And the stakes were high, with just 2,400 doses on site when the doors opened.

About 20 nurses walked the line to screen out the ineligible. The county, after facing criticism in the first days of the free clinics for lax guidelines, has focused the limited supply on pregnant women, caregivers of babies younger than 6 months, those ages 6 months to 24 years, healthcare workers and those ages 25 to 64 with health conditions that put them at higher risk of developing complications from the flu.

As they waited, strangers shared food, chairs, umbrellas and portable DVD players. Children played with coloring books and tossed a football on the grass as a dozen police and firefighters looked on.

“I never expected this,” said Anne Benavides, 63, of La Crescenta, who has asthma and came to get the vaccine for herself and her 4-year-old twin granddaughters. “People are scared — just look.”"

"The Lack of Privacy

The prisoners’ lives show how the Soviet regime makes private events public in order to exercise control over individuals. The inmates have no space to call their own, and their every move is monitored. At one point, the commander decrees that even a walk to the latrine cannot be made alone; even this has become a public event. The camp has replaced prisoners’ names, which represent their private identities, with letters and numbers. Prisoners are no longer private individuals, but rather symbols in a public system. The state’s elimination of privacy is not totally successful, however. The prisoners cling to their private worlds at all costs: Alyoshka latches on to his faith; Tsezar to his care packages; and Shukhov to his precious spoon. In an official and dehumanizing environment, each manages to keep one foot in his own private world, thereby preserving his humanity."

from anti-groupthink front:

"Earlier this year, and quite disconcertingly, neuroscientists in the Netherlands led by Vasily Klucharev demonstrated that the neural mechanism which allows us to learn is the very same neural mechanism which causes us to herd!

We learn by making ‘predictions’ and comparing outcomes to those predictions. When the predictions are correct the reward system of the brain is activated and dopamine is released by the nucleus accumbens (the brain’s ‘pleasure zone’). But when the predictions are incorrect, a ‘prediction error signal’ deactivates the pleasure zone. This process of reward and punishment guides the continuous evaluation of our environment and steers us towards the gradual accumulation of knowledge.

But what Klucharev showed was that, when we don’t conform to the group, our brains flash the same “prediction error signal” we receive when we’ve failed to judge an outcome correctly. When it comes to developing our ability to think outside the crowd, we’re effectively hardwired with learning difficulties."

Sammy: "Hey batb,I believe the quote was 'the voters had been smoking Hope-ium'"

LOL! Thanks for that Sammy. I'm so glad Obama's Hopey-Change schlock is getting the drubbing it deserves. I just wish he wasn't going to take a whole lot of hard-working, honest people out as he goes down the drain.

Re: "The Strasbourg court found that, 'The compulsory display of a symbol of a given confession in premises used by the public authorities … restricted the right of parents to educate their children in conformity with their convictions.'"

If governments really respected the right of parents to educate their children in conformity with their convictions, we wouldn't have public education at all.
