Reader Tips

Welcome to the Wednesday (EBD) edition of Late Nite Radio. Tonight, in light of the recent and seemingly endless list of bureaucratic-mandarin/internationalist/multiculturalist impositions on western culture - most severely, perhaps, in Britain - and the concomitant retreat of the citizenry, we feature a song about sort of struggle, self-defense and resistance of a sort that sadly may no longer sufficiently exist among the often shrugging and ovine western children of the enlightenment.

The song opens with a recitation of Seamus Heaney's poem Requiem for the Croppies, which commemorates the Easter Rebellion of 1916 when a citizen army of Irish nationalists took up arms against British rule. The song itself, though, is not so much about politics as it is about tenacity, resolve, love and courage in the face of mortal threat.

Here then, without further ado, Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy stand up in a hall full of their fellow crackers to perform Makem's stirring Four Green Fields.

The thread is open for Reader Tips.

Jonah Golberg has an essay up entitled Can Civility Be Lost If It Was Never Found?

Goldberg notes that "there is much gnashing of teeth an rending of cloth these days about the death of civility," but, he asks, "when was this golden Age of civility?" Looking back through time - through the Reagan Era, the turbulent sixties, the 50s ("Who knew the McCarthy era was such a high-water mark of domestic tranquility?"), the labor violence of the 30s, the 1910s, when Woodrow Wilson jailed his opponents...etc. - he finds no such age of civility.

He denounces "rudeness for rudeness's sake," but notes "It was ever thus. American democracy has always been a hurly-burly. More important, a lot of the complaints about incivility today are really complaints from the people in power or their supporters in the media, aimed at the folks who won't shut up and get with their program. And there's something distinctly undemocratic about that."

"Democracy is about disagreement, arguments....Civility came to mean politeness in the 16th century; before that it meant being a citizen. It seems to me that authentic civility requires some incivility."

Brave Muslim girl writes in the Mississauga News that the hijab is forced on Muslim women.

According to the 2001 census, the Canadian population consisted of 579,600 Muslims; about 80 per cent of Muslim women wear the hijab. Most don’t want to, but are forced to by their parents.

I think it’s unfair for women to have to wear a burka it’s not part of the Islamic religion, but part of a culture.

In my opinion, people who wear the burka are stereotyped to be terrorists, low class citizens and make people on the street afraid to talk to them.

(The hijab) is giving us Muslims a bad name. It’s unfair for any girl to have to go through that. Isn’t it enough that women are dealing with self-esteem issues and abuse? Do we have to go through this, too?

The article says that, “Muslim women must decide for themselves how they want to dress.” How can they do that if they’re not allowed to make the decision?

It should be illegal to wear the hijab because women don’t get to make the choice to wear it; the family, usually the husband, makes that choice.

I’m a 17-year-old Muslim girl who wants a better world for us.

Looks like Obamaland is going down the same disastrous path as Canuckistan re special hate crimes privileges for certain groups.

It's now a federal crime to hurt a homosexual for being gay but not to rape a woman because she's a woman.

Wouldn't it be so much simpler if Obama & co. just came right out and said, "It's a hate crime to hurt anyone except for white males." For that's really what this is all about.

From the dailymail.co.uk, via Mark Steyn at National Review, another quality submission to the Krazee-philes:

"A council has banned parents from supervising their children in public playgrounds until they have undergone criminal record checks.

"Adults have been excluded from two adventure play areas in Watford, apart from a handful of council-vetted 'play rangers' who will assist youngsters, it emerged today.

"Parents will be forced to watch their children from outside the perimeter fence."

No need to give your head a shake, because it's true. It's simply beyond parody at this point.

Steyn: "I keep getting e-mails saying, 'People will reach a tipping point and they'll no longer put up with this stuff.' I doubt it. Right now the way to bet is that once free societies will retreat incrementally, one trivial step after another, into a totalitarian hell."

War-room strategist and former punk-rock musician Warren Kinsella led his not-so-merry band of young Liberal warriors to a downtown Ottawa bar Tuesday night to try to cheer them up.

The best antidote to a political bloodletting, Mr. Kinsella believed, was to drink and listen to the Stones.

A Christian, pensioner grandmother in Norwich, England *wrote a letter* to her city council complaining about a Gay Pride parade (yawn); she complained - as grandmas of a certain age are wont to do - that the march was a 'public display of indecency' and 'offensive to god.'

The local council's deputy chief executive wrote back, saying that the police had been contacted, and that it was the authority's 'duty...to eliminate discrimination of all kinds.'

Later, two officers knocked on her door to give her a stern lecture.

Says grandma, "I've never been in any kind of trouble before..."

Rhetorical questions numbers 343,834,235 and 343,834,236: Would a local council in England write a chastizing/threatening letter to a Muslim who expressed HIS religion's views on homosexuality? Would the police show up on his door to lecture him?

Noop. Christian Grandmas must be curbed, whereas Muslims who want to impose Shariah law must be respected at every turn. In the name of western society's advancement...

G*d's mercy on their doomed arses.

Excerpt from a fine essay by Canadian blogger Rebekah, aka Miss Marprelate:

"It is not enough for conservatives to have good ideas. Ideas are a dime a dozen. The ideas that change the world are those which can reach the cabbie and the mechanic. The ideas and issues that get discussed over coffee at work.....The ideas that a dedicated minority push in every possible way until they become in the minds of your average Joe to be self-evident truth."

The Krauthammer interview at Der Spiegel, a must read!

Posted by: Robert W. at October 28, 2009 10:53 PM

It's also important to know your audience. Liberals/lefties make all their decisions based on emotion, not logic or reason, regardless of what they say.

Last week I had a discussion with a typical lefty guy at work about the cell phone ban while driving that just came into effect in Ontario. I was trying to impress upon him, that just because he thought it was a good idea, he should not support the government legislating it; sooner or later the government will pass laws "for the best" that he disagrees with.

He would have none of it, couldn't follow the logic. The Brits helped me out a couple of days later (he's a rather large lad). He's now starting to come around on limitations of government power.

Posted by: SDH at October 28, 2009 10:55 PM

Absolutely, Robert. Excerpt:

SPIEGEL: "Mr. Krauthammer, did the Nobel Committee in Oslo honor or doom the Obama presidency by awarding him the Peace Prize?"

Charles Krauthammer: "It is so comical. Absurd. Any prize that goes to Kellogg and Briand, Le Duc Tho and Arafat, and Rigoberta Menchú, and ends up with Obama, tells you all you need to know. For Obama it's not very good because it reaffirms the stereotypes about him as the empty celebrity."

SPIEGEL: "Why does it?"

Krauthammer: "He is a man of perpetual promise. There used to be a cruel joke that said Brazil is the country of the future, and always will be; Obama is the Brazil of today's politicians. He has obviously achieved nothing. And in the American context, to be the hero of five Norwegian leftists, is not exactly politically positive."

Posted by: EBD at October 28, 2009 11:06 PM

Lest you faint at the sight of political acrostics, fetch your Ammiano salt.
"A Democratic assemblyman who heckled the governor during a recent event in San Francisco actually received two messages: the veto letter itself and a not-so-subtle rebuke creatively hidden within it.
Like a find-the-word puzzle, the second message was visible by stringing together the first letter of each line down the left-hand margin. It consisted of a common four-letter vulgarity followed by the letters 'y-o-u.'"
Schwarzeneggar's strongest argument for mere coincidence would be that he preceded the "F" with an "I".

Posted by: Ramon Daley at October 28, 2009 11:11 PM

EBD, I didn't concur with 100% of things Krauthammer said but much of it I did!

In 2012, I think the Republicans should prominently and repeatedly display this quote on their commercials:

"In the American context, to be the hero of five Norwegian leftists, is not exactly politically positive."

A Quebec woman has common law children with a Saudi muslim and now he wants $300k to allow her to take the 3 kids back to Canada.

Didn't she watch the movie "Not without my Daughter"? She was stupid to ever have a child by a muslim and then continue the relationship in SA and expect a normal Canadian life. Their culture is totally alien to ours and a woman is just a chattal to be used as a man sees fit, bagged and kept in the house. What is next, will she expect Canadian taxpayers to pick up the tab? Maybe do a swap, the Kadhr hags for the 3 kids plus future consideration.

Sounds like a wk warroom idea ;

[The flyer was mailed as a message from Liberal health critic Dr. Carolyn Bennett, and featured a picture of body bags in a lab and a sick aboriginal child. The slogan “No vaccines, just body bags,” was featured prominently.]

[But what’s worse than merely attempting to politicize an issue as serious as swine flu, is that the Liberals sent the message 'after!!' the issue had been resolved. That’s really why Ms.Bennett is apologizing.] UA

Ahmed Rashid, Trotsky in Baluchistan

It has been difficult for Afghans to accept how quickly their newly gained freedoms have been lost and how the opportunity to rebuild their country was squandered by the lack of Western resources and a corrupt, inefficient Afghan government. Though there have been advances in areas such as education and health, these are insufficient to convince the public about the sincerity of either the government or the international community. Ninety-five percent of the population celebrated its liberation from the Taliban regime in 2001, only to find that they are now helplessly hedging their bets against a Taliban return.

But there is still hope in Afghanistan. Despite being terrified by the Taliban advances and angry at the rigged election, most Afghans don’t want the Taliban back. The United States has to impress upon Afghanistan, Pakistan and other regional governments that it is not about to abandon the region to the Taliban. Increased international commitment to Afghanistan will still reap deep local results among the people. The United States also has to win the trust of the next leader in Kabul and demand a better standard of performance, insisting that the lack of good governance is as dangerous a threat as the Taliban...

Hahahaha! I always have to laugh at these Liberals who assume the label "Reform-Conservative" is an insult. Like Reformatory, etc. Like we should be ashamed of it.

Well this proud Reformatory loves those labels. They are complimentary, IMHO. Keep it up LIBRANOS!
