"due to a lack of long-term funding commitment from governments"

An "independent" think tank closes its doors.

"It is with sadness that I must announce that after 15 years of quality public policy research, Canadian Policy Research Networks [CPRN] is no longer financially viable and will cease operations," announced Dr. Sharon Manson Singer, President of CPRN.

Among the CPRN policy research areas now left orphan: "Diversity", "Labour Market / Vulnerable Workers", "Social Protection".

You'd think all those "our values are Canadian values" folks would have stepped forward with their chequebooks before now, what with them vastly outnumbering us knuckledraggers and all.

Update. This is just plain cruelty.

To much of their time spent in the tank, and not enough common sense thought outside of it. No tears here.

CPRN Staff (22 people)
Research Associates/Fellows (16 people)
Board of Directors (12 people)
Board Associates (16 people)

Once they were cut off the public teat, this is the best they could do at cutbacks.

Lefties don't donate their own money, that's why they go into politics. So they can distribute YOUR money.

Posted by: grok at October 26, 2009 4:05 PM

Socialism running out of other peoples money ... the sky is falling.

Posted by: Rural and Right at October 26, 2009 4:12 PM

But where is George Soros when they need him? Where are the munificent funds of ACORN Canada? Are there no white wine socialists left? Where is the eloquent and anguished voice of Bob Rae? Where are the legions of "social justice" advocates? Are there no leftovers in Ryerson's "Diversity Fund"? Surely this critical voice can't be left to perish?

This has brightened my day! I like to see these 'rent-seekers' out looking for real work.

Posted by: Rob at October 26, 2009 4:28 PM

Good riddance. Time for these people to get real jobs.

Posted by: sf at October 26, 2009 4:39 PM

Be careful folks. When these leeches lose one teat sucking job,it won't take them long to find another.Just like any virus, which should be eradicated.

Posted by: Justthinkin at October 26, 2009 4:48 PM

I'm confused. Independant and gov't financed don't often hang out together.

Posted by: Speedy at October 26, 2009 4:58 PM

This calls for an extra strong and extra cool tequila tonight. Lovely. Cheers

"You'd think all those "our values are Canadian values" folks would have stepped forward with their chequebooks before now..."

Naw. Getting the government to pay for everything is a Canadian Value. Getting busy and paying for your own stuff is a knuckle dragger red neck beer and popcorn value.

That's what makes us red necks such extremist crazy people. Imagine, self reliance as a moral value. Pfft!

Posted by: The Phantom at October 26, 2009 5:03 PM

One down... a kazillion to go

Posted by: Cappy at October 26, 2009 5:08 PM

Agreed Speedy, there seems to be an oxymoron thingy happening here.

Regardless, it's time to find the $5 violin I got from Wal-Mart for occasions like this.

Posted by: Indiana Homez at October 26, 2009 5:33 PM

Beautiful.

The various multicults won't notice the demise of their oh-so caring big brain benefactors since they never stray far from their mono cultured ghettos anyway.

They all have mail boxes and that is all they actually need or want ... just keep those checks coming from the idiotic welfare state.

At least this trend provides a bit of hope for those of us who actually crave a common culture and language.

It's really hard to indulge in humor with people who don't know the language. That makes for a humorless society.

Posted by: Momar at October 26, 2009 5:42 PM

felis corpulentis: where is Soros? His master Trudeau and disciple Strong have done their dirty work to this once fine country. Soros is working hard at destroying the last beacon of liberty in the world. Looks like he is succeeding.

Getting the government to pay for everything is a Canadian Value. ~ The Phantom

We need to expunge the euphemism "government will pay" and sustitute "taxpayer will pay". Then see which Canadians value it.

Posted by: glasnost at October 26, 2009 6:03 PM

As someone who donates funding to think tanks - Fraser institute, mannng centre etc., I'm surprised that i have never heard of this one.

As for government financing I oppose it and think that allowing personal/corporate contributions to be deductable should is wrong (ditto political party donations).

Last I heard the Canada West foundation receives federal govt funding which makes me consider their opinions and research to be tainted particularly on issues that pertain to federal/provincal relations.

Posted by: Gord Tulk at October 26, 2009 6:07 PM

Yep grok - here's a nice study from the US about politics and charitable donations.

As some people say in the comments, "liberals" want to spend collective money, whereas "conservatives" put their wallet where their mouth is.

Posted by: Erik Larsen at October 26, 2009 6:09 PM

Damn.....
Who says there is not any good news.

Posted by: sasquatch at October 26, 2009 6:51 PM

They should be called a "feel tank." No thinking going on in there.

Whether it's liberal advocacy, charity, leftist newspapers or radio shows, liberals prove time and again they won't put their own money where their mouths are.

When you've already convinced yourself of false facts and are unshakable from them, why do you need to pay people to tell you what you already believe? Bumper stickers are cheaper.

Posted by: POWinCA at October 26, 2009 7:10 PM

This is why we need depressions. Nothing clears the mind of politicians like a shortage of taxpayer funds.

Posted by: sonofAtilla at October 26, 2009 7:14 PM

Hey CPRN, don't forget the last one out to turn off the lights.
After a quick browse of the web site of this "independent group" and my heart did a happy dance.

btw, I didn't know Walmart had violins. Banjos, yeah but violins is a surprise.

Posted by: Texas Canuck at October 26, 2009 7:24 PM

Stay alert!
They have had their sucker like mouths pried off the government backside for now, but they will be back.

Posted by: Stan at October 26, 2009 7:24 PM

WTF?!? Since when do YOU run Windoze, Kate?

Posted by: Sean at October 26, 2009 8:35 PM

Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch. Like Cappy said "a kazillion to go". Too bad the Pembina Institute isn't one of them.

Gord Tulk, I suspect that many of the more lethal lobby/think tank organizations operate in the shadows and we do not get hear of them.

The Liberals being out of power must have hurt the bottom line of these people.

Posted by: Ken (Kulak) at October 26, 2009 10:01 PM

They should cut all public funding to all the universities and make the tuition cost in the disciplines of the sciences(chemistry, biology, physics, computers), mathematics, engineering and medicine/dentistry/veterinary medicine a 100% deductible expense from taxes. The move to privatize the universities would force many to close their doors and for the remainder to put the funds towards more useful academic endeavours. This would also empower high school kids to seriously look at the trades (colleges) for a useful skill, with which they could earn a living.

Posted by: Rural and Right

But of course "think" tanks on the right, like the Fraser Inst., still have access to other people's money, as do multitudes of rural conservative welfare bums. Scratch a con, find a hypocrite.

I'm going to miss the "Intergenerational Equity" research.....

Hmmm.. The Fraser Institute eh? This Faser Institute?

Philboy: while I would rather such groups not be able to get donations tax-free, I do not begrudge them using that which is legal.

Do you support political parties getting per vote grants?

Posted by: Gord Tulk at October 27, 2009 12:56 AM

Well, legal don't make it right.
Their credibility becomes null and void
when they preach personal responsibility
and less gov't while feeding from the trough.
I do support per vote grants, but I am against
an income tax write off for political donations.

Posted by: philboy at October 27, 2009 10:43 AM

philboy, your post looked a bit like a Haiku:

think tank closes in the fall, blame funding
legal don't make it right
syco'phants
