Not Waiting For The Asteroid

"The first double-digit circulation decline in history means only 12.9% of the U.S. population buys a daily newspaper."

And I hear the Winnipeg Free Press will be dropping the Sunday edition. One down, six to go.

And 93% of those papers are Purchased By Kidnappers To Prove Date

"Although the vast majority of Americans now get their news from the Internet or television, a small but loyal criminal element still purchases newspapers at a steady rate," study author and Columbia journalism professor Linus Ridell said. "The sober authority of the printed word continues to hold value for those attempting to extort large sums of money from wealthy people who wish to see their loved ones alive again, and not chopped into pieces and left in steamer trunks on their doorsteps."

Posted by: Kathryn at October 26, 2009 11:25 AM

And that's partly because increasing numbers of people in America cannot and will not speak English, i.e. Mexicans.

That is the key reason the LA Times is dying, along with the rest of LA.

Of course, that's the last thing any newsman will say out loud. And so they are doomed to die. Good riddence. Hoist on their own liberal/fear of racism petard.

And then there are those oldsters who subscribe to a regional newspaper such as the leftist London Ontario Free Press to keep up with the regional Obituaries.

Kathryn: "And 93% of those papers are Purchased By Kidnappers To Prove Date."

Amazing how much the media's interests dovetail with the kidnapper/terrorist wannabes, isn't it.

Joe Molnar: "And then there are those oldsters who subscribe to a regional newspaper such as the leftist London Ontario Free Press to keep up with the regional Obituaries."

Pregnant with meaning. When the oldsters are all finally gone, will the Free Press be gone too?

Kathy,

How about touching on the real reasons rather than playing the race card.

Do you need a ladder to get out of your palanquin?

Posted by: not stirred enough said at October 26, 2009 11:50 AM

About the only reason I ever buy a paper (used to happily subscribe to the Post when Black ran it), or visit their websites is to see what the left is lying about, and what broad anti Conservative narratives are being spun. They are a very helpful resource in that respect. But not worth subscribing to.

Posted by: ward at October 26, 2009 11:52 AM

not stirred,

Kathy didn't play the race card, minorities do that.. you are confused. Kathy stated a fact. Along with the increasing numbers of non English speaking immigrants, the government school system has been producing waves of graduates who can barely read what is on their diplomas.

As for those who do still buy or read newspapers, other than the help wanted ads and perhaps the sport section and crossword not one is reading the badly written tripe that is actually history by the time it hits the street.

Good riddance and hello for a tree!

Posted by: Momar at October 26, 2009 11:57 AM

Less newspapers means more trees. More trees means less co2 in the air. No wonder we are in a period of global cooling. Thank you greenies, you are doing a great job. Not only did you solve global warming, but soon we will have even less BS to shift through to get to the real news.

When I cancelled my decades-old subscription with the Saskatoon StarPhoenix, I made a point of letting the editor know that I was sick and tired of their left-wing journalists and their constant, unwarranted criticism of both Harper's Conservative government and Brad Wall's Sask Party government.

For weeks after, I was inundated with phone calls and flyers offering a new subscription at $7 per month less than what I was paying. Either they could not read or they were unable to believe that it was the content of their rag, not the price, that brought about my decision to cancel.

The wife bought one newspaper yesterday An AJC she went through the paper without reading anything and removed the sales papers, I grabbed the comics the rest was thrown out un read.
There is nothing in a newspaper I believe in and suspect every article of bias.
The paper doesn't even burn well and is usless for pet droppings.

"And then there are those oldsters who subscribe to a regional newspaper such as the leftist London Ontario Free Press to keep up with the regional Obituaries."

A complete aside, I know, but your remark reminded me of a great Soviet-era Russian joke:

Every morning, a little babushka would stop at the local news kiosk and purchase a copy of Pravda. She'd look at the front cover, spit on the ground in disgust and then throw the paper away.

This went on for many years until, one day, the woman who ran the kiosk finally became exasperated and asked out of curiosity, "Old woman, every morning you come to my kiosk, buy Pravda, only glance at the front cover, then you curse and throw the paper aside. Why do you do this?"

The old woman replied, "I'm looking for an obituary."

The kiosk woman responded, "But, but they don't put obituaries on the front page!"

The babushka smiled and declared, "The one I'm looking for will be!"

Why are you people feeding the troll? Its a TROLL for god sakes, you want to keep it around?

Kathy is -wrong- this time though, because a 10% decline in circulation over 6 months does not mean that many people stopped being able to read English. It means that many people decided to stop reading the paper in the last 6 months.

Why they stopped is open to question, but Occam's Razor suggests its the never-ending DemocRat slant that people don't like.

Likewise, the measurement that only 12.9% of Americans buy a paper does not mean that only 12.9% can read English. It means that only this percentage is willing to waste a buck on their crap anymore.

Additionally, there are Spanish newspapers, y'know. Their circulation is in the crapper too.

Kathy is however 100% correct that the number of people living in America who can't and/or won't speak English is still growing. The Arizona Parks Department picks a couple hundred dead ones out of the desert down by the border, every year. Those were the ones who forgot to bring water. And their children, of course. Nothing like a nice three days old dead toddler in the desert, I always say. Fragrant.

Funny how that never seems to make the papers, eh? Maybe only 12.9% of the American population is hard-core stupid enough to keep paying for that.

All the DemocRats and bleeding hearts who opposed building up the border fence all these years should be on that detail. Go pick up the dead kids in the desert, bleeding heart liberals. See how that works for you.

There's an old quote somewhere, (perhaps Mark Twain, perhaps not), to the effect that the only thing to believe in a newspaper is the date - and that it's wise to double check that.

Posted by: Nemo2 at October 26, 2009 12:42 PM

Posted by: rzr at October 26, 2009 12:59 PM

The chickens are coming home to roost. With the State Run Media forgoing all attempts at presenting even a pretense of objectivity in 2008 vis-a-vis Bam Bam, is it any wonder in 2009 people have stopped reading in droves?

This also applies to the ratings of the main news networks.

It's honestly not rocket science. Certainly there have been other factors, the major recession being one of them. But, when "news" companies go out of their way to insult, denigrate, and alienate a significant portion of their potential customer base, they deserve what they get.

According to Rasmussen, ten of the past eleven days have been double digit negatives for Bam Bam. The day that was not, was a -9.

The Phantom,

When you rightoid conbats stop making stuff up to satisfy your little club of exclusivity the trolls will go away.

Remember...it is Republicans in their never ending quest of cheapness that encourage Mexicans to enter the country to provide low cost labour. Bush had 8 years to build the wall and never once tried to make it happen!

Posted by: not stirred enough said at October 26, 2009 1:12 PM

Marshall Macluhan once said (approx.) "People don't so much read their morning paper as they take a bath in it". Since I started delivering the Globe and Mail nearly 50 years ago, I have developed an appreciation for that remark. I remember racing home after my last delivery, to the poached eggs on toast Mom had made for me, and eagerly opening the sports page so I could read Dick Beddoes' column. Then, after reading all the baseball box scores (no Sportsdesk back then, eh?), I would try to wrest the front section from Mom so I could read Richard Needham and Geoffrey Stevens. This is why it hurts me so much to see how awful the Globe has become.

I like the Post. It isn't perfect - I wish they'd lighten up on all things Jewish, for example - but it's the best paper in Canada these days. I try to get my kids to read it, but there's just no interest.

And I think that's a bad thing, because reading the news is a completely different experience than watching news on TV or the 'net. Print is linear, and it forces you to think in that fashion, and to be aware of cause and effect. TV is "all at once", and you are much more a passive receiver than an active participant. Quoting Macluhan again: "The TV child cannot look ahead". A critical faculty that's developed by reading is stunted in the TV generation. Understanding this makes it much easier to fathom how Bambam got elected, for example.

But newspaper readers are, literally, a dying breed. I know I'm an old fogey, but I'd much rather hold on to a piece of newsprint than go through the annoyance of endless scrolling on a 3" by 3" screen. And it's much easier and more satisfying to complete a crossword in print than on any type of electronic display!

You may be surprised to learn that us Right Wing Death Beasts did not necessarily support everything that GWB did.

99% of us with a license to humiliate disapproved of his approach to illegal immigration.

The official RWDB position is that no-one has a right to go into someone else's country without an invitation.

Got a problem with that, dickhead?

Dickhead aside; I'll take that as a compliment because I've merely pointed out the truth.

If you and your ilk are going to play the blame game by coining phrases like 'DemocRats' and such, then be prepared to acknowledge the truth. Extreme rightwingers are notoriously cheap racist hypocrites.

The news is not factual.
The news is all the same. They use agencies like AP, in Vancouver The Sun, The Province, National Post all Canwest and they share stories.
Nobody does actual reporting anymore. Just the gloss is covered.
It is old information.
There is not much information due to space limitations.
There is way too much lefty bias.

Posted by: not stirred enough said at October 26, 2009 2:30 PM

KevinB, I must respectfully disagree with your view of newspapers providing "cause and effect".
However, I certainly agree with that Twain analogy which I became aware of years ago.

I PRINT out about 1/4" a day from a bunch of sites and links from smart, trusted friends. And always in duplex (2-sided) and secure it with a industrial level staple in the left corner. In that, I take my bath AND NO BLACK HANDS.

I then "take a bath" at lunchtime, and a second bath around dinner time in the remainder.

And lately, I've been reading dangerous (to your foot if you drop it) economic treatises like Rothbard's Man Economy and State..

HOWEVER. I do miss the newspaper when my self-disgust reaches the point where shoe-polishing can no longer be put off. There's nothing like a newspaper for placing freshly polished, pre-shined shoes upon.

I think the price of the paper is a good part of the down fall. Just out side of Toronto not long ago the Toronto Sun was $1.00 on a week day. Next day $1.50. heafty increases like that will stop people from buying. Stores $1.50 plus tax. Unions over pricing themselves? Saturday and sometimes Sunday paper only now. It was seven papers a week.....from the Sun. The other paper I buy is just Saturday now. also.

I'd say sports is half man's successes, half man's failures (except in cases of ties).

I only read the local paper at work when warming up my lunch. I laugh at the pathetic headlines about how the "stimulus" is saving local jobs. The national and international news is just the usual lefty crap from the Associated Press. The editorial page is about 5% of what I can find at RealClearPolitics.com and mostly left-wing. If I need to look up an obituary, this paper has a great archives online. I do find that I am now pretty uninformed on local issue, though. Oh well.
