Y2Kyoto: Let's Kick Things Off With Some BBQ Cat

NZ Dominion Post;

In a study published in New Scientist, [Victoria University professors Brenda and Robert Vale] calculated a medium dog eats 164 kilograms of meat and 95kg of cereals every year. It takes 43.3 square metres of land to produce 1kg of chicken a year. This means it takes 0.84 hectares to feed Fido.

They compared this with the footprint of a Toyota Land Cruiser, driven 10,000km a year, which uses 55.1 gigajoules (the energy used to build and fuel it). One hectare of land can produce 135 gigajoules a year, which means the vehicle's eco-footprint is 0.41ha – less than half of the dog's.

They found cats have an eco-footprint of 0.15ha – slightly less than a Volkswagen Golf. Hamsters have a footprint of 0.014ha – keeping two of them is equivalent to owning a plasma TV.

Professor Vale says the title of the book is meant to shock, but the couple, who do not have a cat or dog, believe the reintroduction of non-carnivorous pets into urban areas would help slow down global warming.

In related news: Now vindicated, opposition leader meets with top strategist to review environmental platform.

First they came for the kitties, and we did nothing, then they came for the hamsters, etc etc.

I'd like to know how big a carbon footprint these studies are leaving.

Professor Vale ...believe(s) the reintroduction of non-carnivorous pets into urban areas would help slow down global warming.

There is no global warming, so basically, you can discount everything else the Professor says.

Posted by: Dustoff at October 22, 2009 11:57 AM

Kate is showing her bias. The article clearly shows that her Schnauzer's should be schnitzel not the neighbour's cat.
Seriously, isn't this carbon footprint stuff INSANE! I dearly hope that this book is sarcasm. Because the whole exercise is a big joke. Unfortunately, the joke is on all of us. But who is having the laugh? Suzuki? Gore? Insane academics?
We are ALL carbon. Carbon is essential to all life. It's the food chain, stupid.

This is a truly great post.

But if you are talking about my sister the 0.84 number might not apply because she insists her dog eat a vegetarian diet. I kid you not....no nice lamb bones for her eco-wise puppy.

Mad world all around.

Wonder if it could be delivered as take-out to the Liberal War Room.

They come from state funding of university research, that's where.

Posted by: andycanuck at October 22, 2009 12:32 PM

What about cats that eat wild mice, like our two cats do? Shouldn't I be getting some sort of eco-credit, or a visit by Al Gore, or a coffee mug from Suzuki (made from biodegradable material), or at least something for it?

Surely the foot print of a wild mouse is small?

There's simply no justice in this new green world.

Posted by: TJ at October 22, 2009 12:34 PM

If these eco-freaks get their way, dog shows will soon become equal to the fish tank holding lobsters at your local restaurant!

The horror! (sorry Kate)

Posted by: Soccermom at October 22, 2009 12:42 PM

Why bother fattening up Fido when the great outdoors provides an abundance of carbon spewing, meat bearing beasts. If the greenies have finally declared war on animals, I guess hunters are the new eco-warriors. Pass the venison with a side of carbon credits, please.

Posted by: LC Bennett at October 22, 2009 12:45 PM

Victoria University says it all to begin with. I would trade Brenda and Robert Vale for my cat any day.

If we actually listened to these people we would all be living in tents with a gray blanket and eating grass and leaves. To hell with these saviors of the planet.

The reality is that we will probably use this planet until it's all used up (not meant to plagiarize Bill Withers great song) because that's what humans do. It is our nature. We are clever but basically stupid as a species. If we were truly smart we would have been able to solve at least a few of our problems by now, but the reverse is true we just keep making more trouble for ourselves at every turn.

Look around and note ... the more people in any given geographical area, the more unsolvable problems ... very small communities have fewer and more solvable problems. Why is that?

Posted by: Momar at October 22, 2009 12:51 PM

Our cats object to your menu proposal, Kate. On the other hand, a heaping platter of dog meat seems OK to them, at least in principle.

I had to chuckle when I saw that the study published was from the University of Victoria, know locally as bull bitch U. I'll bet Robert boy is on a very short leash.

Posted by: Western Canadian at October 22, 2009 1:19 PM

Will these eco-idiots never stop tormenting us?

I have five hungry cats that can't wait to sink their bloody teeth into these tofu eating fools. Do you think we could turn the warmenists, one-worlders, ecofreaks, scaremongers and other anti-freedom acolytes of Mo-reece Strong into dog and cat food?

Posted by: felis corpulentis at October 22, 2009 1:44 PM

Momar "we are clever but basically stupid as a species"
Isn't it peculiar that this "stupid" species is the only one that is the least bit concerned about artificialy manipulating its environment? Or that we even have an environment? Or that we have any possibility of control over it? Or that we should even try to do something about it? Or that we have any clue about the chemistry of it?

Posted by: jack at October 22, 2009 1:46 PM

Yum! Schnauzer schnitzel!

Posted by: ebt at October 22, 2009 1:50 PM

I had a dog once (God rest his furry soul) and never once would I consider giving him up for a wildly insane yet popular trend. In fact, I'm sure my dog would talk circles around these carbon footprint fiends.
Remember- these same people don't like children and probably don't like Christmas, either. I think I'm seeing a pattern.

Posted by: Osumashi Kinyobe at October 22, 2009 2:03 PM

So since I have 8 acres(3.24ha) I can raise 8 Land Cruisers? COOL! Where can I get myself a breeding pair?

Dido
Except in my case it is, they can take my 4 large dogs and 3 cats from my wife and I's cold dead hands.
I am glad that our critters are doing their part to keep the world warm, as soon as I can buy some acreage I will get some more dogs and perhaps cats, horses, chickens ect.

Posted by: Alan at October 22, 2009 2:35 PM

But Jack, you are comparing us to what other species?

I am looking at the mess we continually make with our little bit of knowledge .... an we know that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. We simply act without knowing fully what the hell we are doing ... global warming is one example, coddling losers and criminals is another ... giving Islam the benefit of the doubt is another ... electing Obama is the paramount stupidity. ...

Sure we do lots of clever things, like putting men on the moon, inventing cars and so on ... but when it comes to knowing how to live together and how to control our over population, avoid wars ... fix social problems etc ... so far we look pretty stupid.

Posted by: Momar at October 22, 2009 2:37 PM

I think they've got it all backwards. To put in in perspective, they should be saying that these vehicles' carbon footprints aren't as large as we're being led to believe by the alarmists. For instance, "Heck, even a dog has a larger footprint than an SUV."

Why can't they all just go away?

Posted by: Another Calgary Marc at October 22, 2009 2:42 PM

momar, cities do have more issues than small towns. Much of that is a matter of numbers - and social programs. A city's problems are made worse by more Government in general, and the progressive/liberal values they espouse in particular. See Toronto, New Orleans, Detroit etc. All run by leftists.

If these nuts can take your dog then they can take the farmer's goats, pigs, and cows. That reminds me, I need lunch.

Regardless, The eco-tyrants are on the march. The cull is on even if it hasn't hit the rich western world yet. They start with the weak and poor, hence millions dying from malaria in Africa due to the ban on DDT.

But wait until they control and ration energy! The obvious result for society will be less heat, less food, less freedom, less wealth.

We'll all be poor, except for the State rulers and their apparatchik of course.

Posted by: Marko at October 22, 2009 2:51 PM

I can think of people we could use as dog food once they were screened for disease. Wouldn't that help solve the carbon problem?

Posted by: Speedy at October 22, 2009 3:05 PM

What if we ate all members of Peta instead?

Posted by: INP at October 22, 2009 3:08 PM

Something is screwy about that study. I managed to feed my cat all summer with fish from a little storm pond. She had a footprint of 0.0034 acres over summer months, which makes it 0.01 acre a year. Of course she'd dine on an odd bird and frog to supplement her diet, so to say.

Fact checking, kind of.

I guess it's time we hunters got the respect we deserve from the eco-enviro-world, what with our seasonal habit of removing those voracious moose, elk, and deer from the equation.

I suppose Dr.Suzuki will soon bepresenting a medal to the president of the local fish and game club.

I'll take pictures and post them here later.

"Will these eco-idiots never stop tormenting us?"

As soon as funding is cut. They'll go silent immediately because none of these people actually cares. In fact if we cut their pay in half, they would get two jobs. One for and one against the issue. They would argue vehemently for both side depending on whose payroll they were on in any given minute.

Posted by: gord at October 22, 2009 6:49 PM

Wasn't there a dog named "Kyoto"?

Posted by: Peter Jay at October 22, 2009 7:35 PM

May I make a suggestion?
As part of Earth Hour next spring please load up your trusty pets in the vehicle and drive around with them honking and waving at all the eco-nuts sitting in the dark.
There are only a handful of things that give me enjoyment in life...one is my loyal Lab dog that I don't give a sh*t how many acres it takes and the other is tormenting leftist.

Wretchard responds:

"The logical conclusion of the communist/socialist idea may not be the worker’s paradise, but the human extinction project.

You can hear the hints in the environmental movement. Their latest campaign is against pets. To pet rover is a crime against Gaia."

"Well the hell with Gaia; not the planet on which we live but the hell with that whole line of theological nonsense that has us striving to hold our breaths (CO2), end our species and forces us to eat our pets. Damned the whole project, with its Year Zeros, re-education camps, Shepard Fairey altars and its admiration for Mao Tse Tung. The whole tongue-flicking, smarmy enterprise may appeal to some, but no thanks at least for me.

If I am doomed to believe let me believe in love; and if I am doomed to disappointment then let me die on that road. But maybe not. The gates of hell have been trying a long time and the haven’t prevailed yet."

Taking Vitruvius's optimisitc line, there is a small potential upside in this push to eat pets: a reduction in scallop prices.

Explaining:

The other day, my fish monger (West Point Grey, Vancouver) told me that several customers regularly come in for fresh scallops ... for their pets. To my audible gasp, he added, "and shrimp". "But surely, the machine-peeled stuff", said Me. "No, always the hand-peeled", said he.

I kid you not.

Not far away, a run down shack worth a mil and a half or so, had a forlorn sign in front: "Next time I'm voting for real climate action".

Meh... just another pair of silly-clever people with no real marketable education and skills proposing totally inappropriate ideas which bear no relation to reality. Par for the course for high IQ academics outside the hard "trades" (see Captain Capitalism's take on that) looking for a way to be relevant. Ridicule is the best counter.
