CBC: "Backers of $5 million African leadership prize say they can't find winner this year"
h/t Edward Teach
Hmmm , so, if they don't award the money then who gets to collect the interest for another year ?
,
Mary Robinson, that disgraced daughter of Erin should maybe keep her big mouth shut! It is because there is no government in Africa worthy of the prize, they're all crooks and tyrants.
Posted by: Larry Bennett at October 20, 2009 5:31 PMGive it to Moammar! He was ripped off when O won the Peace Prize!
Posted by: Soccermom at October 20, 2009 5:43 PMUnbelievable.
There must be some scumbag in some craphole African nation who has robbed his people blind and murdered his enemies.
If you can't find one in Rwanda or Egypt or Libya, just look in the UN in Nw York or even better in the IN Human Rights Council in Geneva. The UNHRC is overrun with mass murdering human rights violators.
They should talk to Jack Layton or Bono. Those lads will have no trouble finding a winner.
Posted by: TJ at October 20, 2009 6:10 PMTJ, they are both winners.
Posted by: Ken (Kulak) at October 20, 2009 6:17 PMAh, but we need to funnel them how much per year in carbon guilt money? Ah, here it is "the U.N. says Africa needs at least $1 billion a year to manage the effects of climate change". http://blog.taragana.com/n/african-environment-ministers-appeal-to-wealthy-nations-for-climate-change-funding-67020/
So, just who are the fine upstanding African leaders that will be receiving this money from the UN?
Right, I'll get to that first thing in the morning!
Posted by: mitchel44 at October 20, 2009 6:17 PMThey could pick me! I was born in Kenya and I guarantee I don't have the birth certificate to prove it.
Posted by: Gen. Lee Wright at October 20, 2009 6:31 PMSo .... Obama does not win by default?
Posted by: OMMAG at October 20, 2009 6:46 PMThe standards for awarding this prize are obviously too high. The judges should confer with the Norwegians, who have much more experience in these matters.
Posted by: RSP at October 20, 2009 6:47 PMO isn't interested in this "small change" crap . He will scam ten times that in the next few years
Posted by: Rob C at October 20, 2009 6:57 PMNow if they could just include death at old age or replacement due to violent coup, they could probably hand one out every second year. Every year, in some cases. Just think. Some dynasties would have a whole collection of them on their family mansion mantel.
Posted by: Louise at October 20, 2009 7:10 PMThere should be no reason why Africa is a poor continent. It has the resources to make it rich. It is the backwards tribalism that stunts it.
Why hasn't anyone awarded Barack "the blood of Africa in me" Obama? He's African, right?
Speaking of awards...
Juxtapose!
Crouton got the prestigious Order of Merit from the Queen today.
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2009/10/20/jean-chretien-queen-order-merit-london.html
But, um, wasn't Conrad Black screwed by da liddle thug precisely over "accepting a foreign honour", unCanadian, Nickle Resolution...?
http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/black_conrad/peerage.html
Technically, the Order of Merit is conferred personally by the Queen at her sole discretion, not HMG, and she is after all Queen of Canada...except when a non-Liberal may be honoured, I guess.
Posted by: Rogue Male at October 20, 2009 7:25 PMI think that the O is waiting for another'moment in time' to annouce that he was born inn Kenya. I think someone so special should rule two or three continants...afteral he is the one the world has been waiting for...Africa just has to wait a few moments longer..the O can still hope (and change!) for that prize!
Posted by: Jema54 at October 20, 2009 7:30 PMObviously, Stephen Lewis should get the money. That would be "good" imperialism; and Stephen is used to getting (tax) money for doing nothing.
Posted by: andycanuck at October 20, 2009 7:55 PMIsn't Stephen Lewis a friend of Mao Stlong?
Posted by: Ken (Kulak) at October 20, 2009 8:13 PMThey limit the qualifications to elected leaders.
OK...let's thank God they did not give it to Mugabe. He was 'elected', right? sarc
And if Ibrahim has that much money why are the Libs complaining that Canada has failed Africa?
"Crouton got the prestigious Order of Merit from the Queen today."
What, O didn't win that one, too? I'm shocked! It's a right wing conspiracy, I tell you!
Posted by: Soccermom at October 20, 2009 8:22 PMSo did Owebama not win because of his lack of Africaness or his lack of leadership?
Posted by: Joe at October 20, 2009 9:29 PMOk, I realize this may be taken as a cheap shot, but Botswana had a President named Festus? (shades of Dennis Weaver with a bad leg)
Actually, it's kind of cool. 'Festus' Obama. Ramblings of a guy who probably doesn't need another beer but will have one anyway.....
Posted by: Brian M. at October 20, 2009 9:48 PMThe Queen, God bless her. And He's the only One who knows what she sees in Chretien.
Posted by: Larry Bennett at October 20, 2009 9:51 PMInteresting information, Rogue Male. You are absolutely correct that Crechin used the Nickle Resolution to deny Conrade Black his right to Canadian citizenship when the Queen of England made Conrade Black a Lord.
It is interesting that the dumbo Crechan accepted the award that the Queen of England dangled in fount of his flat snozz - the former P.M. took the bait though and fell for the Queen of England's ploy to mock the pathetic Liberano P.M.'s who dared to mock her. (remember the juvenile dance jig of Turdo?). The Queen won, Liberanos lost. The bumbling Liberano fools just keep going downhill ...and I laugh at them each time they flail. And now to get that Ad Scam thingie back on the frount plate; with any just help, Cretchin will will end up in the same place as Lord Black. However, Cretchin will deserve his stay in the crowbar hotel.
Posted by: Jema54 at October 21, 2009 12:36 AMGive Obama time. You need to have LEFT office in the previous 3 years, so watch for an Obama victory in either late 2012 or 2013.
Posted by: Robp at October 21, 2009 10:07 AMThey should give it to the Stephen Lewis Foundation. They do a lot of great stuff on the grassroots level, and the money goes directly to people affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa.
A Dare to Remember is one cause they're running atm.
