| October, 2009 - Forsaking good sportsmanship, Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin yesterday ridiculed Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s lack of success in Moscow in getting agreement on Iranian sanctions. Speaking in Beijing, he said, “There is no need to frighten the Iranians. We need to look for a compromise. If that is not found . . . then we will see.” |
It's still early this end, so it might just be a nightmare that hasn't yet cleared, but did I recently read that the Russians have been invited in to inspect US nuke facilities?

But of course! Dude owns the business that sells nuke technology to the mullahs. And US is flapping ears like a cocker spaniel instead of bombing Natanz reactor into dust. Putin PWND BO and there is no one in the States to pull the plug on this travesty.
Posted by: Aaron at October 15, 2009 11:01 AMHillary is just a fat ass joke waiting for a new punch line. She cannot be taken seriously.
Obama put her in charge of fortnight matters because he considers that portfolio unimportant. We know that by his determination to lost in Afghanistan.
We should take Russia seriously. It appears they have found a new strategy to beat the USA/West. He supports our enemies who are draining us financially by continuing to keep our expensive military chasing it's tail.
It's working well thanks to the boy/man narcissist in the white house.
Soon all of Europe will be depending on Russian for it's energy whilst fearing the growing reach of an Insane Iran. Looks good on the Euro-weenies.

Posted by: Erik Larsen at October 15, 2009 11:03 AMThe Russians must be laughing their butts off . . . they have a complete Innocent in the White House, a neophyte with typical American Liberal beliefs in Unicorns and Warm Comfy Fur.
They'll take everything they can get out of Obamassiah and then kick his skanky political ass to the curb

The West allowed them to sell their natural resources for full price and take advantage of western investments into their market economy and they quickly turned the tables on us in the cold war. The West will never miss a chance to surrender to socialism as long as they can make an extra penny.
Posted by: Aaron at October 15, 2009 11:11 AMKGB vs Acorn. Wonder how that will work out. By the way thanks for the capital that re-vitalized the motherland and gave us the resources to get back in the game.
Posted by: Speedy at October 15, 2009 11:24 AMKate, I think it's time for a new recurring theme:
The Trouble With The Left
The trouble with the left is they think that since Russia lost the cold war, Russia wants to be our friends.
The trouble with the left is they think that prisons are for rehabilitating criminals as opposed to protecting the general public from the criminals.
"We need to look for a compromise. If that is not found . . . then we will see.”
What exactly does that mean in Putin's world? If a compromise is not found, does that mean the next logical step is to "frighten" the Iranians?
I doubt very much if the Iranians would be frightened. They can recognize a lack of resolve as well as the next guy.
Posted by: biffjr. at October 15, 2009 11:32 AMOne would never have thought that Mrs Clinton was offered the State Department by President Obama as a means to continue to humiliate her.

The Cold War never ended.
I posted my two cents' worth on Putin's latest carefree, arrogant hangin' of the ol' rat, over at my blog. Just click on my moniker below and find it if you want...
Posted by: Canadian Sentinel at October 15, 2009 12:30 PMPerhaps Mrs. Clinton (defanged under Obama) has trouble seeing communists as enemies and just can't stand up to them or perhaps she and Putin are just soul mates. If this were the nineties and she was humiliated like that, Putin would have good reason to fear for his life (it would look like suicide).
When a bear loses fear of humans they become totally unpredictable and dangerous. The Russian Bear is no different. Thanks for that Obama!

And really, isn't BO Russia's man. Think of it, the international wing of the soviet communist party for decades fostered and funded the socialist and communist ideology around the world. In most cases a significant rump of radical leftists developed. And now those leftists have hijacked the democratic party and installed a leader who arguably has more sympathy for and shares more political ideology with the likes of left-wing despots like Chavez and Putin than he has for mainstream American politicians.
The seeds sown by stalin, watered by brezhnev et al, have now bloomed in the White House.
Posted by: Gord Tulk at October 15, 2009 12:40 PMDiplomacy is the key and most of Europe is hoping that the USA will pursue that avenue first with respect to Iran. The only trouble with the left is that the right wingers keep F*#!king things up.

Posted by: Doug at October 15, 2009 12:53 PMObama was so intent of being everyone's friend he managed to paint himself into the proverbial corner. The Russians will either slowly suck every concession they want from him or Obama will have to forgo his "peacemaker" persona and lose face. I have a feeling I know which one he will choose.
sidebar: Mr. Obama's record of say one thing and do something completely different may work with first time voters and sycophants, but the Russians, well, the Russians are a much more clever bear.

Bam Bam and his crew are so out of their depths it's not even funny anymore. This sh*t's turning deadly serious, and unless Iran is dealt with quickly, and harshly, I fear a world war is brewing.
T -- diplomacy was tried, and failed spectacularly with respect to both Iran and North Korea. To continue to place one's hope on a diplomatic solution is naive in the extreme. The classic definition of insanity comes to mind.
Massive food and oil aid was provided to North Korea, first under Clinton, then under Bush, in exchange for a halt to their nuclear program. How did that work out?
More recently, diplomatic talks and inspections have been used extensively with Iran with the objective of halting their nuclear ambitions. What did the West get? A secret nuclear facility at Qom.
So, I'm not sure what more diplomacy will yield other than more obfuscation, delay, and clandestine advancement of the Iranian nuke program. Perhaps you can explain why you think continued diplomacy would yield different results.
What's the point? I know I'm just whistling in the wind here.

It would appear diplomacy on the Iran file just got torpedoed courtesy of China.
Making money supercedes all other considerations. Russia and China have more than a few irons in the Iranian fire.

China's Premier Touts Cooperation With Iran, Signals Opposition to New Sanctions
Thursday, October 15, 2009
BEIJING — Premier Wen Jiabao said Thursday that China intends to strengthen its cooperation with Iran, an indication Beijing would oppose growing calls in the West for additional sanctions against the Islamic regime for its nuclear program.
Earlier this month, Tehran revealed that it was operating a previously undisclosed uranium enrichment facility near the holy city of Qom, deepening suspicions in Europe and the U.S. that Tehran seeks atomic weapons.
But U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was rebuffed in Moscow this week when she sought support for a united warning to Iran of the consequences of refusing to prove that its nuclear program is peaceful.
Washington had hoped that Moscow was warming to the idea of tougher sanctions after Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said they were sometimes inevitable. But ever since, the Russians have been backtracking from that remark, saying threats of such measures are unhelpful in negotiations with Iran. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said in Beijing on Wednesday that talking about sanctions was "premature."
Wen's remarks Thursday appeared to suggest that Beijing is also unlikely to accept any new U.N. sanctions resolution. China and Russia are both veto-wielding members of the U.N. Security Council and have long defended Tehran by watering down resolutions.
Posted by: Hans Rupprecht at October 15, 2009 2:23 PMThe West has rarely looked Russia in the eye and told it nyet. Russia is the enfant terrible of Europe and will continue being so unless the powers that be are willing to stick it to them. Russians don't respect softness and really hate it when you remind them of their bloody past. They hate it even more when you help the same people they want subjugated. Give Poland a defense system. Supply eastern Europe with an alternate energy source for the winter. Squeeze them out of the North Korean situation. Invite the Georgians over for tea. Then watch Russia throw a tantrum.
T, if you think you can talk down the Russians, you are a bigger fool than we thought.
And clinton was supposed to be "ready on day one" because she had followed bill around the world and learned about international diplomacy. Uh, huh.
I wonder if she would be vile enough to sell out the United States to make obozo look bad and boost her political fortunes in the future after he fails?
No, nobody would be that bad.
If Hillary learned all about foreign diplomacy from Billy Bob then America never stood a chance. Rumour has it that Hillary couldn't even "smoke" a cigar right. /rimshot.
Posted by: Texas Canuck at October 15, 2009 3:15 PMPutin's bluffing, re Iranian nukes- he doesn't want a nuclear ME any more than we do.
But, he's wisely working the Boy Wonder like a poker player. He knows the Israelis will bomb Iran back to the Stone Age... he's just milking all sides for all he can get before he leaves Tehran to fend for themselves-
And he'll be wringing Obama for plenty more concessions along the way... these KGB guys know a mark when they see one.

Putin presses his "Obama" button.
Oh, but don't the Russians know? Hillary is an envoy of the administration that has undertaken "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."
Frankly, I'm rather amused that Obama's faith in diplomacy is being exposed for the shame that it is, and also pleased that Shillary has been hoisted on The One's petard.

I cnfess I wondered what the Obama administration was up to when it offered Hillary the State job.
I think it was a clever move: they've played to her considerable ego and have effectively sidelined her politically for the remainder of President Obama's tenure.
