Reader Tips

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation, here are the London Symphony Orchestra, featuring the great pianist Mr. Claudio Arrau (in his last great show at the age of ca. 85), performing Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Concerto #5, II, III, IV, V, in E♭ major, Op. 73, Sir Colin Davis conducting. (And then he leaves the stage, for the last time.)

Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

today's gardening tip:

found out it was the squirrels nipping and stealing my squash plants.

but to pick them before ripe would be a waste also.

not so says a green thumb friend; my butternut and pepper squash can be picked while still a tad green and will ripen off the vine at room temperature.

but only if squirrels and such are getting to them first.

I managed to harvest about 15 good sized ones this way.

They tell us that they are wind turbines. They are actually designed to reverse and the generator becomes a motor so that they can us them as fans to either speed up or slow down the rotation of the planet. That way they can slow the rotation of the earth while the sun shines on farmers fields and speed it up crossing desert areas. This will increase crop yields. I know it sounds far fetched but no more than thinking you can generate any significant amount of electricity with windmills.

Further to my previous post, the Count is on record as stating:

"It's clear that when the population increases in a province, there must be a change in the distribution of seats, but we must also maintain a good balance with Quebec."

First he pays lip service to the basic democratic principle of rep-by-pop, then throws that principle under the bus by indicating "balance" must be kept with Kay-bec. Well sorry, Iggy, those are two mutually exclusive things.

Yes, I know we don't have purified rep-by-pop in this country (for example, P.E.I. has 4 MPs), but the fact that a sizable amount of Kay-beckers would be offended that Ontario, B.C. and Alberta should receive more MPs due to population growth really grates.

Maybe this is a made-up story, and the so-called experts are wrong. I'd like to think this is the case. Sadly, I'm not optimistic.

Thursday, widely reported: Polygamy charges against two "religious leaders" in Bountiful, B.C., were quashed yesterday, because of "prosecutor shopping". The government had sought the opinion of two special prosecutors, both of whom advised against proceeding with the charges. So it found a third. But B. C. Supreme Court judge Sunni Stromberg-Stein decided that this was not within the attorney general's jurisdiction.

Apparently, it was feared that a successful Charter challenge to the law could strike it down and make polygamy legal in Canada.

To which I would ask: so what is failing to prosecute going to do?

And: what did the prosecutors learn in law school?

Finally, during the gay marriage debate a few years ago, a lot of naysayers said it would open the door for polygamy, but proponents said that was ridiculous. Now apparently it isn't so ridiculous. Personally I think gay marriage can be supported on other grounds -- but not polygamy.

Star, Saturday, Thomas Walkom.

Keynes was right (1): Free markets don't always work, and government action could rectify the market's faults.

Keynes was right (2): We need global economic coordination, international institutions that could stabilize finance and trade.

All nonsense, of course. First, we don't have anything remotely resembling a "free market"; we have a mixed economy, with some freedom and some controls. The free market (or capitalism) is based on voluntary trade between individuals of goods and services for mutual benefit. His argument is that freedom is faulty and that coercion is necessary in human affairs. Note also that the vast amount of controls in the economy were allegedly intended to "stabilize finance and trade" themselves. Controls distort people's economic decisions, thereby causing production to decline, wages to suffer, and a large class of unproductive government bureaucrats to emerge.

Colin: The ROC has been appeasing Quebec since the last shot was fired on the Plains of Abraham. They whine and pout, we appease. Why should we expect them to react any different? The liberals are the greatest appeasers but only to those that can help them. Quebec needs to go it alone for a while (like forever). They would be like the teen who moves out and suddenly realizes he has to cook and do laundry and pay rent etc. Rude awakening but necessary in the process of growing up. Quebec obviously isn't interested in growing up.

"England's Children's Minister wants a review of the case of two police officers told they were breaking the law, caring for each other's children.

Ofsted said the arrangement contravened the Childcare Act because it lasted for longer than two hours a day, and constituted receiving "a reward". It said the women would have to be registered as childminders.

"To think that they would waste their time and effort on innocent people who are trying to provide for their families by returning to the workplace... Surely their time and effort would be better placed elsewhere."

Ahhhh but it's not a waste of time dear, it's the whole game plan - total subjugation, total surveillance, total reliance and total obedience. Read the bureaucrat's planning manual - 1984

Does anyone have any reliable information that would confirm why CBC is not featuring the program "Wild Roses" for the new 09-10 season? One of Cbc's better soaps, a story that revolved around "oil, love and turf wars" in Alberta. That leaves only "Heartland" that is filmed west of Ontario.

“Liberal MP Brian Murphy tries — and fails — to disrupt the economic report card presentation

Just received an email from New Brunswick. From inside the secure facility where Prime Minister Stephen Harper is reporting on economic progress — a report demanded of him by Michael Ignatieff and the Liberals — I hear that Liberal MP Brian Murphy (Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe) tried to disrupt proceedings:

Brian Murphy tried to crash the PM’s event with a handful of protestors. They carried homemade signs “Report Card Update F-”

Oooo, an F-minus! That’s even worse than an F!

Needless to say, Murphy’s merry band never made it past the first layer of security.

So who in Michael Ignatieff’s office approved of this stunt? Who thought it would look anything other than pathetic? And finally, how is that Brian Murphy and the Liberals can give the Report Card and F (oops, and F-minus) without having actually seen it?

I mean, the Liberals wanted these report cards in the first place. So you’d think they’d want to read them.”

The second image below is, in my opinion, one of the most disquieting images ever presented at Climate Audit.

Two posts ago, I observed that the number of cores used in the most recent portion of the Yamal archive at CRU was implausibly low. There were only 10 cores in 1990 versus 65 cores in 1990 in the Polar Urals archive and 110 cores in the Avam-Taymir archive. These cores were picked from a larger population – measurements from the larger population remain unavailable."
