Who said this about Michael Ignatieff?
"It is not very often that one gets to witness a 'leadership frontrunner' immolate his own candidacy so blithely, so recklessly, but if you click here and you peer inside, you will see the corpse of Michael Ignatieff’s vaulting ambition. He is done – and if he isn’t, he should be.
"Now, it is true that I objected to the learned professor before reading this essay, posted over the weekend on Pierre Bourque’s site. I objected to the manner in which his supporters trampled on democracy in a Toronto riding – literally locking out opponents. I objected to his support of George W. Bush’s illegal war in Iraq. I objected to the fact that he mocked Canada (Link dead) during the three decades he was abroad, and that he likened Israeli policy to the fascism of apartheid. I objected to what I perceived to be breathtaking arrogance – calling Canada a 'herbivorian boy scout' one day, then jetting up here to run it the next."

Posted by: EBD at September 15, 2009 10:45 PMFrom the always amusing zerohedge.com: (re: US consumer credit markets)
"As for the reason why loan originations in July declined a whopping 10% after posting a 12.7% increase in June, the government simply noted that this was due to "decreased demand from borrowers."
"And so the circular lie continues: the government claims lending is increasing, when in fact, it is not, and when confronted with this fact, the government claims this is due to lack of interest. Furthermore, with retail sales reportedly higher, the consumer is allegedly spending more, with average wages declining, meaning consumer need to borrow to finance purchases, or else eat into their meager savings. Yet all this is occurring on the foreground of a rapidly increasing savings rate. So consumers are not borrowing, they are saving more, yet somehow sales are increasing: the lie is so circular that if there was a Kudlowbot, its head would explode trying to "spin" this null argument."

Thanks for the 2006 Kinsella quote. I certainly hope it becomes the basis for a CPC ad. It would be devastating.

"Most oppose nuclear power in Sask., report says."
I'm referring to CBC.CA's (Saskatchewan) report on the Sask. Party's proposed nuclear power plant that will hopefully be built in this province.(Sk.)
This is interesting. Don Perrisn was appointed chairman on this issue. He claims that "about" 2600 people attended the meetings that were held in May and June across Saskathewan, and that "about" 1300 people wrote in letters.
Here's what he "doesn't" say.
A: "About" how many of the people who attended the meetings were in favour, or against.
B: "About" how many of the letters he received were pro (or anti) nuclear.
Do we pay a chariman for an important issue such as the construction of a new nuclear power plant to come up with "about" how many are for, or against the project??
Leave it up to the CBC to falsify a headline!!

You can watch to the end, or take my summary, as follows - we can spend a whole lot on climate change now (whether AGW is significant or not), or we could spend our money on other things.
In the end, there is little benefit to anybody by spending a lot on climate change now, if we go that way, many people will die, who could be saved with other spending priorities, eg nutrition and disease.

I'm hopping mad after watching CBC's coverage of the recent events in American politics. Neil MacDonald had a piece on The National covering the Democrat's assertion that criticism of Obama's administration is solely due to racism.
One Democrat, Hank Johnson, even stated, "We'll probably have folks putting on white hoods and white uniforms again." [referring to Tea Partiers]
If Democrats, liberals, progressives, or whoever would care to take a simple coffee break to Google Democratic Party AND Racism, they would see the history of their party. House Rep. Johnson might be startled to see that the folks in white uniforms are rooted in his own party; that removing the white hood will most likely reveal a Democrat (past or even present)!
Racists have always been Democrats (the party was founded by racists. Yeah, that includes Thomas Jefferson). Republicans have always historically fought slavery, Jim Crowe laws, and supported genuine INDIVIDUAL human rights. Why?? Because conservatives see value in the individual and what he or she is capable of achieving on their own. That one talented individual working without interference from the state will contribute more to humanity than a oppressive regime deciding for everybody (ie, Castro vs. Norman Bourlag). The progressive can only place value on a group, usually based on some form of identity politics. Hence, recent race card politics (they hold that entire deck), 911 victim denial, anti-Israeliism, 'sins of our fathers', and so on, ad nauseum. Conservatives support the right to the pursuit of happiness, while liberals support the right to state-imposed of happiness. Don't dare contradict this, you'll be shouted down and personally attacked by those who can't formulate an intelligent argument.
Back on topic, liberal lurkers please Google what I'm saying. How did the image all change so that the Democrats are the champions of anti-racism and the Republicans are the hooded boogeymen?? My assertion is that years ago the Democratic Party was taken over from the racists who sought to oppress people of color, by socialists who thought racism was small-minded, and they could oppress an entire society. Yeah, you can Google that too.
[rant mode off]
Posted by: Bull at September 16, 2009 2:07 AMWell said, Bull.
I've said it once, and I'll say it again. If it weren't for so-called 'progressives', racism would be effectively eliminated in the civilized, western world. Only the race-based, identity politics of the left continues to stoke the fires of racism, and keep it front and center, at least, in the political realm.
Posted by: Colin from Mission B.C. at September 16, 2009 2:21 AMMore about Michael Moore and his film Capitalism: A Love Story in today's Star, including some quotes from a media interview.
Apparently Moore thinks things started to go wrong under President Reagan. A sentence from the write-up reads, "Reagan’s 'trickle-down' theory of empowered bankers and businessmen leading the peasants to greener fields came to be known as 'Reaganomics'."
First of all, "trickle-down" was never a good metaphor or description for capitalism, because the economic system is based on voluntary trade for mutual benefit. The exercise of one's rational judgment leads to benefits for one's own situation. All progress (meaning higher standards of living generally) comes from individuals using their minds to produce more or better or cheaper goods and services. A system in which people risk their own resources but can reap big rewards for success in this regard, and in which they can go out of business if they do not produce because potential or actual competitors may do a better job (capitalism), is superior to one in which everybody's resources are at risk through taxation and in which there is little or no incentive to produce more or better or cheaper goods and services (socialism).
Oh, and there are no "peasants" under capitalism, only under feudalism. Most of the people living under capitalism are "middle class".
Moore thinks the whole thing duped Americans into thinking they could get rich, like a Ponzi scheme. But a Ponzi scheme is one in which funds are not reinvested into actual production, which is more like socialism than capitalism. Everybody can get "rich", or at least significantly better off, in a capitalist system, but only through effort -- since everything one consumes must be produced first -- and it is far less likely with the many non-productive bureaucrats of Big Government dragging them down at every turn.
Moore doesn’t so much want to smash capitalism as to replace it with a blend of the innovation of capitalism with the community thinking of socialism, says the article. But you can't mix freedom with coercion. And you don’t have to be a socialist to have a sense of community. There is a big difference between altruism and benevolence.
Moore admits he benefits from the capitalist system: "There’s nothing wrong with buying stuff. I’m not going to be a hypocrite here ...". Perhaps too late? A lot of leftists rant against "buying stuff". But as Ayn Rand said, when the socialists started out, they said everyone would have shoes; when they learned the facts, they declared that it's better to go barefoot.
A Moore quote: "What I’m against is that sort of senseless consumerism that forces people to go into debt for things they shouldn’t be going into debt for". No argument here; it isn't sensible to go into debt for nothing. People should desire consumer products because they improve their lives, not merely to show off. But "mindlessness" has been promoted by philosophers over the past 200 years since Kant separated reason from reality; Ayn Rand has described the entire scenario as an attack on man's rational faculty. And since philosophy does find its way into everyday life (here's something that probably does "trickle down"), no wonder people talk and act in accordance with it.
Finally, another quote: "Capitalism is the opposite of democracy because capitalism is about the few benefiting at the expense of the many". Sure, buddy, like in Castro’s Cuba or Kim Jong-Il’s North Korea? Where the top leaders party and everyone else suffers deprivation or worse?

"A whole new world
The “dean” of news anchors, Tom Brokow, argues that information filtering is more necessary than ever because the Internet is so full of unsupported facts that it needs responsible people — presumably like him — to separate the wheat from the chaff.
MR. BROKAW: Well, I’ve — one of the things I’ve been saying to audiences is this question comes up a lot, and a lot of people will repeat back to me and take it as face value something that they read on the Internet. And my line to them is you have to vet information. You have to test it the same way you do when you buy an automobile or when you go and buy a new flat-screen television. You read the Consumer Reports, you have an idea of what it’s worth and what the lasting value of it is. You have to do the same thing with information because there is so much disinformation out there that it’s frightening, frankly, in a free society that depends on information to make informed decisions. And this is across the board, by the way. It’s not just one side of the political spectrum or the other. It is across the board, David, and it’s something that we all have to address and it requires society and political and cultural leaders to stand up and say, “this is crazy.” We just can’t function that way."
"But the really good line, I think, came from Tom Friedman who said cogently argued that technology has made everyone a member of the new media and Friedman, like Brokaw, thinks this is terrible.
When everyone has cellphone, everyone is a photographer. When everyone has access to YouTube, everyone is a film maker. And when everyone is a blogger, everyone is a newspaper. When everyone is a photographer, a newspaper and a film maker, everyone else is a public figure. Tell your kids, be careful. Every move you make is a digital footprint.
Mr. Friedman never paused to think that his warning to the kids might be interpreted both ways. Are people to fear the new technology because it may digitally capture any acts they may later regret or because it may lets the powers track the fact that they captured regrettable acts which no one wants seen? The Old Media, hand it to them, knew information was “hot stuff”." (YouTube included)

Anyone who's ever worked in a school with their head screwed on tight, their eyes wide open, and their BS metre running, knows that "safe school" means safe for the bullies and "zero tolerance" means that any teacher with high standards who attempts to administer logical consequences to students displaying insubordinate or violent behaviour is told to shut up and suck it up -- particularly if the student is part of a "visible minority" (aka, non-white).
