I had a conversation the other evening with a very intelligent convicted sex offender. Goes with the occupation. He had it all figured out. All the evils in Western society is due to capitalism. If we did away with big corporations and "The Greedy", then everything would be good in the world. Socialist to the bone.

He quickly figured out that I wasn't buying it and dropped it. But it made me wonder if there was a connection?

I may be stating the obvious to some, but socialists not only want to share the riches of society, but also the blame for things that are wrong. Here was an intelligent man embracing a socialistic view of the world to offload his responsibility for his crimes.

In all my years I've seen this happen all the time when speaking to criminals; diminishing personal responsibility for one's actions and blaming others... but this is the first time I've seen this manifest as anti-capitalism. I guess it took a smart criminal to make the argument.

[not saying that socialists are criminals, just that their ideals appeal to criminals on a self-serving level]

Edward Kennedy
Several readers actually complained when I did not write about the late Edward Kennedy on the weekend. "In a week when one of the most important politicians of our time dies, who happens to be a fellow Catholic as well," says one, "you chose to write about tree huggers. It seems to me that your writing tendencies have become quite narcissistic and that, my friend, is a grave sin."

Socialism breeds criminals/narcissists*: Meet Uncle Joe** and “Pied Piper Obama”, aka The Cult of Personality*.

Parents demand to vet Barack Obama school speech over ‘indoctrination’ fury

President Obama has been accused of trying to build a personality cult and indoctrinate America’s schoolchildren with a speech to be beamed into the nation’s classrooms next week.

Not a word of the speech has been published but it has been seized on by his opponents because of lesson plans for teachers issued by the White House to encourage discussion of the speech. Until they were hastily revised yesterday, the plans suggested that pupils write letters to themselves on what inspired them about Mr Obama and how they could help to achieve his goals.

Mr Obama will go ahead with the speech but it will be released a day early so that it can be vetted by wary parents, weary teachers and a gleeful Florida Republican who likes to call the President “Pied Piper Obama”."

**Uncle Joe Stalin:

"Stalin the murderous dictator? He's history

Russian textbooks rewrite country's traumatic past

On Sept. 1, while the international media focused on commemorations marking the 70th anniversary of the start of the Second World War in Poland, Russian children returned to their classrooms to begin a new school year.

They found the world transformed. New state-approved textbooks have recast Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin into "one of the most successful leaders of the U.S.S.R."

*Socialists Uncle Joe and Pied Piper Obama: narcissists.

*"The narcissistic leader fosters and encourages a personality cult with all the hallmarks of an institutional religion: priesthood, rites, rituals, temples, worship, catechism, mythology. The leader is this religion's ascetic saint."

O'zymandias*.
...-

"But what happens when the crisis that is roiling public opinion is about Washington itself? Then it becomes a problem."

John McCain: "It’s a peaceful revolution but I think it is a revolution we’re seeing.”"

Wretchard**: "A crisis of some sort is definitely brewing."
...-

"You’ve lost that lovin’ feeling

Bloomberg says that “President Barack Obama returns to Washington next week in search of one thing that can revive his health-care overhaul: a sense of crisis. Facing polls showing a drop in his approval, diminished support from independents, factions within his Democratic Party and a united Republican opposition, Obama must recapture the sense of urgency that led to passage of the economic rescue package in February, analysts said.

“At the moment, except for the people without insurance, we’re not in a health-care crisis,” said Stephen Wayne, a professor of government at Georgetown University in Washington. “You do need a crisis to generate movement in Congress and to help build a consensus.” … Obama Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel said the administration made unprecedented health-care progress in eight months. ‘Not There Yet’

The crisis isn’t here yet, but Rahm thinks, or perhaps hopes that we’re getting there. A crisis of some sort is definitely brewing."

*"Ozymandias

by Percy Bysshe Shelley

I met a traveler from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal these words appear:
“My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look upon my works, ye Mighty, and despair!”
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away."

I nearly fell off my chair reading Simpson's column. He has been known to admit errors before but this one was a correction long in need airing.

"Last time, the networks made matters worse by listening to those voices (including mine) who wrongly insisted that the leader of the Green Party be included, bringing the total around the table to five."

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/opinions/set-the-table-right-for-a-meaningful-debate/article1276740/

Now I hve my suspcions about why he wants the format he proposes, put iggy on par with the PM and ahead of Layton, however, I can't disagree that Liz, bugs bunny, May, should not have been included and added nothing, in fact detracted from the substance AND decorum of the proceedings.

Goreacle Report: Up, up, up in the air in my heavier-than-air CO2 balloons.

Or, in AGWarmland's WarmSpeak: Up, up, up in the air in my "lighter than air CO2 balloons".
...-

"I wonder why Greenpeace never protests in Qatar?

Image above from myclimatechange.net. Note that the artist could not have picked a worse image to portray the message since CO2 is heavier than air and in the real world, none of those balloons would float. Most people learn this in grade school. Even so, lighter than air CO2 balloons seem to be a recurring theme in warmland.

I ran across this interesting tidbit on CO2 emissions per capita which I found interesting. While many warmist organizations concentrate on pushing lifestyle changes related to CO2 emissions, we usually see that framed in reference to total CO2 emissions per country. When you look at the per capita values, an entirely different picture emerges.

The Little Fella responds to all the independent forecasters calling his budget spin a pile o' crap...

The Harper government is preparing to unveil a new plan demonstrating how it would return deficit-swamped Ottawa to balanced budgets, seeking to bolster its fiscal stewardship credentials as an apparently inevitable fall election nears.

Ottawa to unveil road map to zero deficit
Ottawa, London and Vancouver — From Saturday's Globe and Mail Last updated on Saturday, Sep. 05, 2009 04:46AM EDT

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, eager to craft a political legacy in which Ottawa's plunge into deficit figures less prominently, announced Friday he hopes to soon lay out a blueprint to get back into the black in the years ahead.

The Tories plan to release it as early as this month – before a Liberal-led effort to defeat them – along with a promised update on the progress of federal stimulus spending.

Brian, I drive through Markdale each year on my way to Sauble Beach. I've always had daydreams about hijacking one of their 18 wheelers at their storage facility out on Highway 10. :~)

Mississauga Matt: Re Chapmans
one of our salesguys here in our marine dept in Owen Sound (which you drive by on your way to Sauble)
lives in markdale he said that he could see the smoke from Chatsworth on the passing lane hill Which is about 20min to Markdale. His house was not effected in the evacuation of about 60 homes, Hospital & a nursing home. He said you could smell the smoke still this morning.
This is a disaster to Markdale as that is the main employer About 400.
I feel for the people of Durham & Markdale, The tornado 2wks ago now the Fire at Chapmans.
Chapman family said on the news they will be up & running as quick as possible.
Man i luv their Ice Cream & their FudgeCycles, Wife hates me for it though.

I don't just drive by Owen Sound (and through Chatsworth too), I usually end up in one of the restaurants along Highway 26 and/or go to the Galaxy movie theatre.

Sad news about Chapmans and Markdale. I've seen a short doc of their operations and it was all high-tech.

I used to love driving my Chevy on rainy nights in the city. Everything sparkles when it's raining. That music would have sounded great on my Delco AM-FM radio, with an "add on" reverberator" from an auto supply catalogue.

To live in this guys world is to know no peace. Besides which where supposed to pray for our enemmies, not revile them.

Just a thought.

Would the real reason that some liberals are gunning for an election have anything to do with that Copenhagen conference thats coming soon to hammer out a deal to replace the Kyoto scam?

Are they in fear that if its a Harper government the Canadian stand will be "can't be a global agreement without all countries in agreement"?
Clock runs out on Kyoto without an agreement in Copenhagen the big scam comes apart at the seams and Uncle Mo is going to make Madoff look generous in comparision.

Fascinating (and frightening) story about the Russian shipment of wood that was pirated in the Baltic or N. Atlantic. It is suggested that it contained not wood but perhaps nuclear weapon(s) and that the pirates were perhaps Jewish agents who were hoping to stop the shipment from arriving to its intended destination that was not Africa, but perhaps Syria or Iran. The Russians retrieved their secret shipment at great cost. This is the kind of thing you read in fiction best sellers. Comments?

Unrelated to that is this story, which gets a big raised eyebrow....this has the potential to make Obama Jimmy Carter and the US a laughing stock...it would be funny if it werent so dangerous.

No I don't Stephen, but it was in the National Post this day, and it seems to me I've heard something about it earlier though not much was known about it at the time. Sorry I am incapable of typing your link without a typo, but I honestly tried.

Posted by: Larry Bennett at September 6, 2009 12:45 AM

Are you serious, Larry? Assuming you are, all you have to do, man, is:

- highlight the link with your mouse (hold down the left mouse key and roll over the link)
- then click the right mouse button to bring up the quick menu
- select "Copy" and then
- "Paste" into the address bar.

Larry Bennett,

I also saw the link you speak of...very interesting!

And, re you Yeats-ing yourself...don't be too harsh young fella...I didn't know how to accomplish the "copy/pasty thingy" either...haven't had a need. When there's a need, you'll figure it out.
