Pain free is very bad. You know that little disease called leprosy? Well, the horrid scarring and stuff, that's caused by sufferers feeling no pain in their extremities and constantly injuring themselves.

If we want "pain free" beef we're better off to look at standards of practice that promote well being, like shorter transport times and reduced feeding of grains and corn (done for quick growth but causes infections that require anti-biotics). Cattle and pigs can both be transported very long times without food or water, days in fact, can be very crowded and unable to regulate heat. We can easily reduce that kind of suffering, and we can design abattoirs that keep the cattle calm right up to the quick and painless bolt in the head.

It's not pain free that we need, it's humane practices. Of course, the people setting the standards shouldn't all be vegetarian, as almost everyone in the animal rights/animal welfare groups are.

Animals shouldn't be put though terrible conditions. One might say that about people, as well. The typical blathering about animals' suffering is a product of liberalism (its proponents sipping coffee that is NOT fair trade) which is quickly ignored by the need to expand one's girth. I love beef, pork, lamb and chicken. But the sight of those chicken trucks (semis) full of live chickens always makes me feel sad.

I can't stand thinking they may end up at a Kentucky Fried Chicken......but then I go to Swiss Chalet, and see all the plump little bastards slowly rotating on those spits and I think "well, at least some of them made it to a good home" and all is well with the world again.

I've encountered one child with this disorder -- was in hospital frequently with severe injuries and died at an early age from complications therefrom. Pain is a biological warning/injury avoidance system that should not be bypassed.

A whole generation-or more-of people have lived without ever being hungary. The thought of killing an animal to live is just beyond most young urban people. Meat comes from the store.

I guess I would be upset if animals were tortured but, domestic cattle serve a need. And its funny how some posters have commented on the chickens....... that is the meat of choice of many healthy young urban know it all's. I have one a few doors down. They hate beef and the environmental impact it has but love their chicken.

Back in my meat wagon days, you could pretty well ignore the noisy ones, they self-triaged as not badly hurt. The quiet ones were always the the worst off.

it isn't the thing that eats away at the tissue; that happens because of chronic untreated injury (because the victim cannot feel ANY pain to react to or care for the injury)

The solution is easy...the people of the world are seemingly so stupid that we should just TELL them that the beef they are eating is from pain-free, free-range animals who all were suffering from incurable heart disease. We just provided assisted suicide and then, to be eco-friendly, we decided to sell the meat rather than let it go to waste.

PETA needs to get out into the field and monitor the situation. Perhaps they could go to Africa, the Serengeti, and armed with giant Q-tips, keep the lions away from the elderly Zebras and Wildebeests,who are killed mercilessly by the large, vicious cats of that region.
