.... for Bill Clinton's speech Saturday at the CNE have been much slower than expected, forcing organizers to reconfigure the stadium layout and offer fairgoers $5 tickets at the door.
About 7,000 advance tickets are sold for the 4 p.m. event, a far cry from the 25,000 people expected when it was announced two weeks ago.
Flashback - "Former U.S. presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton drew a standing ovation from a packed Toronto convention centre ..."
Just saying.

I wonder how well BO will draw north of the forty-ninth after november 2012?
Posted by: Gord Tulk at August 29, 2009 2:00 AMBO will probably be living incommunicado at the flat next door to Mo Strong in Bejing, if he isn't residing in the 2X6 farm by that 2012.

Posted by: zilla at August 29, 2009 3:15 AMHey, Zilla...
Wait three or four months. Bubba will be back for yet another speaking engagement. That pathetic attention whore pops up in Toronto as often as his bent weiner popped up in the Oral...excuse me...Oval Office.
Do they have to pay $5 not to go?
Posted by: speedy at August 29, 2009 8:39 AMBC has sucked so much out of Toronto in speaking fees in the last few years I am not surprised.
Bit of a hairbrained idea. Nonetheless, that he could sell 7,000 regularly priced tickets is still surprising given his, ahem, overexposure.
They would have made more money if they brought in Hanna Montanna for a concert
Posted by: Stephen at August 29, 2009 8:41 AMThe EX is the perfect place for Bill, he should be working the midway with a straw hat and a bamboo cane.
Posted by: tom at August 29, 2009 9:26 AMWhat gets me really pissed about this is the amount of money the federal government gave to Toronto to bring this clown in.
Posted by: a different bob at August 29, 2009 9:55 AMa different bob - the federal government did NOT give any money to bring in Clinton. They gave the money as part of a heritage or tourism grant. What the CNE Organizers choose, themselves, to do with that money, is up to and only up to, those CNE organizers.
People in other blogs are, gleefully blaming Harper for inviting Clinton. However - Harper, the Conservatives and the federal government, have NO say in the choice. If they did, the same Liberal presses would be screaming about 'federal interference and control'.
Posted by: ET at August 29, 2009 10:18 AMYes they did, ET. They're running a massive deficit, and chose to continue forking over cash for non-essentials. So, the Conservative government gets to wear it, like it or not.

Posted by: sasquatch at August 29, 2009 11:11 AMAnd we Canadians have shown that we will not support companies and organizations that willingly takes the stimulus and then still wants to charge us max dollars.
Take Ford as an example...Sales are up and it's being partially blamed on the fact that consumers are switching to Ford product because they refused the cash grab. GM and Chrysler took billions in tax payer dollars and still expect the taxpayer to pay sticker price.
So Clinton comes to town and when it's realized he is being funded by the stimulus cash the CNE got, slump in ticket sales...organizers are now forced to offer tickets at a discount...yeah for us!

Posted by: Kat at August 29, 2009 11:22 AMBill should be in front of a booth at the CNE yelling Doggie Doggie.
Sorry, only those who grew up going to the EX will get that one.
Posted by: Largs at August 29, 2009 11:26 AMAnd yet we are assured time and again by "experts" in the "Conservative" party that Toronto is so liberal that we need to water down our message for the 416 area code blah blah blah
I was at a conservative blogger get together last weekend where one party volunteer said solemnly, "The media still bitch about Mike Harris."
Yeah dude but: He GOT ELECTED TWICE. Who cares what two dozen reporters and a bunch of loud loser social workers think and say??
We are SUCH wimps.
Posted by: Kathy Shaidle at August 29, 2009 11:45 AMYeah that media.....
Them and their polls.....then this.....sorta like CO2 AGW in a cold august.....
Posted by: sasquatch at August 29, 2009 11:55 AMWell, I myself am going to see the airshow (unless it rains, damnit) but I will not be forking over for entrance to the CNE. Its a Liberal propaganda fest, and I'm not going to participate.
Are you hearing me, Conservative party minions? Stop spending my money.
Posted by: The Phantom at August 29, 2009 11:57 AMBringing Beel Cleentone to the CNE to speak is totally beyond me ... except for the political bent of the Toronto CNE officials.
Driving in downtown Toronto yesterday, who but Moron Miller should cross the street in front of me? It took a great deal of restraint not to yell out my window, "MORON! WHAT'S YOUR EXCUSE?" Not being a violent type, however, and being a law-abiding citizen, I didn't have to restrain myself from running him down.
Posted by: batb at August 29, 2009 12:04 PMthey should have booked in Monica, - now there would be a draw - then return the profits to the beleagured taxpayers of Canada
Posted by: scanoo at August 29, 2009 12:26 PMAmazing isn't it, how quickly we forget.
Clinton was Governor of Arkansas, turning a blind eye to tainted blood from Arkansas prisons to be sold to Connaught in Canada and subsequently to the Canadian Red Cross, which eventually became the death sentence for many Canadians.
Shameless corruption at the highest level.
Former prime Minister Paul Martin Jr. was said to be on the Board Of Connaught Labs at the time as well.
Clinton, the accused rapist (Jaunita Broaddrick)
has the gall to come to Canada to speak for money and the arseholes at CNE are happy to pay him.
Chretien is eventually rewarded with Order Of Canada, Martin becomes Prime Minister for a short period and finally Clinton comes to Canada to bullshit us for our money to boot.
Handcuffs and leg irons would be more appropriate for those involved at the government level in the cross border dirty blood business which killed innocent Canadians.
There is not enough money on this plane of existence that I could be offered to listen to any of the three speak in a hall.

Bill Clinton needs a warm up act to cure those drooping ticket sales,
I’d pay 5 bucks to watch Stephane Dion eat a wiener with a knife and fork.
sorry, kate, I disagree. The comment from a different bob was - did the Conservative Government specifically give money to invite Clinton? The answer is: No.
They gave money to the CNE, 3 million from their tourism fund. The grant requires recipients to earn 25 cents on every dollar they spend and only goes to tourist events with an over 250,000 audience. Other tourist events funded by this same Tourism Board include the Stratford Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival. There is no way that this Tourist Board could have refused to fund the CNE.
The Tourist Board certainly did not allot any of the money to bring in Clinton. The fact that the CNE Executive did such a dim-witted thing as to invite Bill Clinton..is an act that reflects their own stupidity. Who goes to the CNE to hear anyone speak? They go for the rides, the fun, the food, the shows...and certainly, not for any old political has-been or even, 'now-is'. Only the socialist left on the CNE Board would deem such an invitation of any interest - and the results show that no-one has anyh intention of going to Clinton's Show.

Only 10,000 showed up to hear Beel Cleentone's speech. One of the CNE organizers blames it on not enough time to advertise, as the "window" was very small, having only since August 15 to let us know that Bill was coming ... well, you know what I mean.
The tide is turning.

Posted by: curious_george at August 30, 2009 12:55 AMHilarious. George W. shows up in Calgary, where 2,000 people paid $400 to listen to him. Bubba shows up where almost 10,000 people paid $5 (though through original $20-50 pricing, who's to say what their takings were?) to listen to him.
So, roughly, W. brings in $800,000 and Bubba brings in $50,000. Sounds about right to me. If the government hadn't kicked in the extra $125,000, Clinton wouldn't have even been paid his speaking fee.

Toronto's just the place to send Slick Willy. It's his kinda place -- and even they're sick and tired of him.
'Over exposure, I guess, and now that times are tough, socialist hogwash wrapped in a shiny Clinton package doesn't go down too well, seeing as it's what got us into the real down and dirty situation we're in now.
