Reader Tips

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation, here are Stanley Jordan on guitars, Charnett Moffett on bass, and Tommy Campbell on drums, performing Stanley's Return Expedition ¤ & II ¤, at the Montreal jazz festival, in 1993. I must say that this performance does feature some strikingly skillful work by all three musicians. You won't, if you like this sort of stuff, want to miss Charnett's bass solo in part 1, or Tommy's drum solo in part 2.

Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

Samurai Bioethics

John G. West on a Noble Defense Doomed by Darwinian Materialism

Near the end of the film The Last Samurai, a forlorn but heroic group of Samurai mount a final desperate assault against opponents who have armed themselves with weapons produced by Western science and technology, especially the Gatling gun. The charge by the Samurai ends as one might expect, with the warriors mercilessly (but efficiently) cut down by the Gatling guns.

Ah, you're welcome, Marc. Technically, we featured this work here at SDA LNR well over a year ago, before we were officially SDA LNR, and then, during a couple of off-line symposia I've hosted here at the studios this summer, this work was particularly praised, so I thought it might be a good idea to put it out there again, for those who may have missed it the first time.

I've been informed that Mississauga Parks and recreation referred information, provided by concerned citizens, regarding Hizb-ut-Tahrir meeting at Mississauga Valley Community centre to Peel Police on Jul 30th.

So far there have been no press releases by Peel police regarding this matter. It would be interesting to see further development.

ManoManoManoManoManoManoMan,
Vitruvius.
Astonsihing, sizzling, tasteful stuff.
Have you ever heard the kick played like that?
Sounded like maybe he had two. Couldn't see from the clip.
THANKS!

Daniel Ryan: "Conservative" David Cameron is so keen on NHS, that he wants to expand it! Amazing how people bring up individual anecdotes of good outcomes to glorify the NHS. Reminds me of a former customer -- a retired professor -- in Vancouver, who after some kind of surgery, told me, sans irony, that "when you get in the hospital, the care's quite good".

A friend's daughter in law has a brain tumour. Wait time for surgery: two years.

BTW, according to Daniel Hannan who caused this ruckus, the NHS is the 3rd largest employer in the world after the Red Army and the Indian Railway. About 1.2 million souls, I think he said. He also mentioned he had a friend who had a serious illness and, refused a certain drug, he set out to purchase it privately. As a result, they cut off his NHS care.

Two United church ministers let go, including one who held seminars on Islam with her Muslim husband

Some say the two ministers clashed, and the congregation took sides. Others see a more sinister undercurrent of racism toward Ms. Davis and her husband, a Kuwaiti Muslim.

In the winter of 2007, Ms. Davis led weekly seminars on the history of Islam, providing tea, dates and tahini. Her husband, Salem, attended a class and recited in Arabic from the Koran while she recited after him in English. They also arranged for the group of about 30 to observe a Muslim service at an Ottawa mosque.

Jennifer Lynch today -- at a CBA meeting in Dublin, Ireland -- asked for lawyers, academics and law school deans to come to the aid of the HRCs.

It's reported that Lynch told the CBA that rights commissions represent an important component of the justice system. Given the myriad ways in which they omit the proper safeguards of the justice system, it's clear they're not part of the "justice system" at all, and in fact are a transparent attempt to get around it.

We need a full list in one place of the problems associated with the HRCs, so here are some:

- lack of due process

- right to a fair trial does not apply

- no presumption of innocence

- complainants get the full resources of the state working for them, while targets of complaints are on their own

- no legal aid for the targets

- complaints can be launched in multiple jurisdictions, to see what "sticks to the wall"

- hearsay evidence is allowed

- documents are frequently not disclosed in a timely manner (if at all) and/or have portions "redacted"

- no search warrants are needed for investigators

- investigators sometimes obtain information from police who have obtained warrants

- truth is no defence to any expression

- no "costs" rule for unsuccessful or frivolous complaints

- cannot file lawsuit for malicious prosecution

- entrapment is routinely used on targets of complaints

- tribunal overseers sometimes want to hold proceedings in secret, and have been known to attempt to exclude the target of the complaint from his own "trial"

- judges are appointed for life and are independent, whereas HRC tribunal heads are not

- HRC personnel are often radical activists with a personal agenda or vendetta

- HRC proceedings are considered "remedial" even though there is no difference between fines from HRCs or from real courts

- "human rights" law is considered quasi-constitutional, even though it is made up on the fly by persons with no legal training

I don't know if the last point is enacted somewhere or if it just another example of Antonio Lamer's flakiness.

No one who upholds genuine justice could support a parallel system missing so many safeguards.
