Reader Tips

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation, here is Mr. Fats Domino performing Blueberry Hill, in 1956 (1:36). This up-tempo version of Bobby Cerdeira, Al Lewis & Larry Stock's 1940 song reached #2 in the Top 40, and was #1 on the R&B charts for 11 weeks. It was Domino's biggest hit, selling more than 5 million copies worldwide in 1956-57.

Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

The original fatman; I loved that guy. On a more serious note, another Vandoo arrives for burial. Though not killed in direct combat, he was over there doing as he was told. I'm a firm believer in "Dulce et decorum est,pro Patria mori" Despite Wilfred Owen, despite Ezra Pound.

Loved this song back in the day.

Used to think it was new then, and I found out that it has also been recorded quite a few years earlier by Glenn Miller.

There is a Blueberry Hill in our area that we go cross-country skiing on in the winter. Here is a video I made about that place.

Remember the Rasmussen poll numbers showing Obama's approval rate slowly sinking? Well here's an item that puts some new teeth to that poll series:

"Obama losing some support among nervous Dems"

And: an old issue, though long buried, is wending its way to court again.

"Retired general, lieutenant colonel join reservist’s lawsuit over Obama's birth status"

Interestingly enough, the feds tried to moot the lawsuit by no longer requiring Major Cook [the reservist in question] to go to Afghanistan. They changed his orders.

O'Goreacle Weather Report: Update.

"Finally, we’re starting to see him sweat."

It's OGW.
...-

"Barack Obama feels the heat, changes the play"

Finally, we’re starting to see him sweat.

President Barack Obama made his personal icy cool the trademark of his campaign, the tenor of his White House and the hallmark of an early run of successes at home and abroad. But as the glamour wears off and a long, frustrating summer wears on, he is being forced to improvise — stooping to respond to political foes and adjusting his tactics and demeanor for the trench warfare of a legislative agenda.

The root of the change is one that faces every president: Economic and international realities that resist political charm. Iran and North Korea have shown no interest in the president’s outstretched hand. The economy has delivered a double-whammy, with rising unemployment stirring voters’ concerns while sluggish growth deprives the government of tax revenues Obama would like to spend on new programs.

Health care reform, which once appeared flush with momentum from earlier congressional victories, is now a slog through no less than five committees, which include Democrats who either aren’t sold on Obama’s expansive vision or can’t figure out how to convince voters to pay for it.

“This is when it gets harder,” the president told supporters June 30."

If Obama looked at our successes and failures, he could avoid making the same mistakes

As President Barack Obama drafts his health-care plan, he could profit from reviewing the successes and shortcomings of the Canadian system that has operated successfully for more than 40 years. Canada spends more than a third less per capita on health than the United States and still covers everyone, whereas the U.S. system leaves 46 million people without insurance."

From the "close but no cigar" files, these two headlines related to AGW:

Global warming: Our best guess is likely wrong - A new study suggests scientists' best predictions about global warming might be incorrect http://www.physorg.com/news166795736.html

and

Solar cycle linked to global climate - Scientists find link between solar cycle and global climate similar to El Nino/La Nina

Come on, boys and girls, keep going...keep thinking along the lines of where the researach is headed...you might eventually realize that AGW is BS.

JULY 14, 2009 –At a time when the counter-terrorism policies and practices of the Bush Administration are under attack in Washington, Republicans for Ignatieff praises Michael Ignatieff for his courageous stands on targeted assassination and coercive interrogation.

In a landmark interview with veteran television interviewer Charlie Rose, Ignatieff calls on America to chart a path to make some hard choices:

“I am not sure we can keep to a pure civil libertarian position all the way. For example, we might have to engage in the preventive detention of suspects on lower standards than we use in a criminal case. We might even have to engage in certain forms of targeted assassination of terrorist enemies. These are evils in the sense that people get killed or people get hurt. We don’t keep to the fullest standards of due process but they avoid greater evils.”

Film due for release on Nov. 11, 2010

CFB PETAWAWA - The proud history of Canada's Airborne will finally be told in a full-length documentary movie scheduled for release next year.

"Paratroopers: The Canadian Story", a 90-minute documentary now in production, will endeavour to be a definitive re-telling of seven decades of Airborne forces from the creation of the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion and the first combat drop on Normandy to the Airborne Regiment's critical role in Cyprus.

Crisscrossing the country recording interviews with veterans and former paratroopers, the film's producers brought their cameras this week to CFB Petawawa, the regiment's final home from 1978 to 1995.

For producer/director Dixon Christie, walking into the Airborne museum's hall of remembrance, where the regimental colours are laid up, was like walking on hallowed ground."

The era of deferred adulthood
--------------------------

Former Liberal cabinet minister and University of Ottawa president Allan Rock is calling on Ottawa city council to reverse an age cap on OC Transpo student bus passes.

Last night student representatives presented the letter to the city’s pedestrian and transit advisory committee, which also supported scrapping the age-cap policy.

As of July 1, full-time students age 28 or older are no longer eligible for discounted student transit passes.

The natural end result of the religion of socialism: equality, aka "Nobody is spared.".

" ... those tipping into demographic decline (unlike young Ireland) have an underlying cancer that is even more deadly."

"The West cannot support its gold-plated state structures from an aging workforce and depleted tax base."
...-

"Fiscal ruin of the Western world beckons

For a glimpse of what awaits Britain, Europe, and America as budget deficits spiral to war-time levels, look at what is happening to the Irish welfare state.

Events have already forced Premier Brian Cowen to carry out the harshest assault yet seen on the public services of a modern Western state. He has passed two emergency budgets to stop the deficit soaring to 15pc of GDP. They have not been enough. The expert An Bord Snip report said last week that Dublin must cut deeper, or risk a disastrous debt compound trap.

A further 17,000 state jobs must go (equal to 1.25m in the US), though unemployment is already 12pc and heading for 16pc next year.

Nobody is spared. Social welfare payments must be cut 5pc, child benefit by 20pc. The Garda (police), already smarting from a 7pc pay cut, may have to buy their own uniforms. Hospital visits could cost £107 a day, etc, etc.

"Something has to give," said Professor Colm McCarthy, the report's author. "We're borrowing €400m (£345m) a week at a penalty interest."

No doubt Ireland has been the victim of a savagely tight monetary policy e_SEmD given its specific needs. But the deeper truth is that Britain, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, the US, and Japan are in varying states of fiscal ruin, and those tipping into demographic decline (unlike young Ireland) have an underlying cancer that is even more deadly. The West cannot support its gold-plated state structures from an aging workforce and depleted tax base."

Vitruvius,

Absolutely love Fats. Was the first record album I owned. 13 years old asked for this album as an xmas gift and got it. I think I was one of the only 13 year olds - 73/74 who appreciated his talent on my block. I acutally recived the strap due to the Fats. Some of us at my elementary school snuck into the music room and used thier equipment to play some albums that we went home and brought back after realizing the school forgot to lock the music room enty door. We were caught during my playing my Fats album - overheard by the janitor who reported us - we were having fun with an improntu dance. I was registered for choir as was the rest of the group - we hung aroung after the music/choir teacher left - I lived a block away from the school and went home and brought my Fats record and the other chior members also brought thier records. We were reported. Since this was my second violation, I recived 2 hits on each hand - it was worht it. I was also the only one who had a "Smoke on the Water" recording which we also played. Love Fats.
