The only "cowboys" that Iggy & The Liberal Horde really like are the boys dressed up in chaps & wiggling their way down the street in the Gay Pride Parade.

Posted by: Fred at July 16, 2009 9:46 AM

Interesting how Iggy is respectfully of different cultures except the radical conservative culture of is 'own' country.

Posted by: jckirlan at July 16, 2009 9:47 AM

I don't mind the chaps..as long as they wear pants under them.

Posted by: speedy at July 16, 2009 9:54 AM

Ummm 'respectfully' should be 'respectful'. Apologies to my grade 3 teacher, Mrs. Smith.

Posted by: jckirlan at July 16, 2009 9:57 AM

Ignatieff is presenting his usual smug, patronizing elitist view.

We all know the mindset, that of the Big City Socialite who spends 'the season' in Paris and New York, and the in-between phases in Cannes, London, Hampton and Cape Cod, and who sneers at small-town residents who live their lives in one town.

Obama, also an elitist, sneered at rural and conservative America and Ignatieff belongs to the same elitist Set. These are people who consider that they alone, as Philosopher-Kings, have not merely the wisdom but the Divine Right to rule.

Good one. Very applicable to the flakes.

Polls--the crack cocaine for political junkies.

Get your fix at today's EKOS (with changes from last week)

Conservative: 34.1% (+2.3)
Liberal: 32.4% (+0.2)
NDP: 15.2% (-0.8)
Green: 9.6% (-1.1)
BQ: 8.7% (-0.6)

Posted by: Calgary Junkie at July 16, 2009 10:20 AM

Well CJ I wonder what the Vitruvius election calculator would say, my suspicion is a significantly reduced con minority.

Iggy wont pull the trigger till he knows he can win or get a solid NDP Lib coalition. He gets one shot and one shot only if he loses.

Posted by: Stephen at July 16, 2009 10:28 AM

Iggy, bubby, say goodbye to western LPC electoral inroads. Say hello to GTA rump party opposition status in perpetuity.

I like these LPC leaders who commit political suicide like it was a right of passage.

Posted by: Jim at July 16, 2009 10:35 AM

Iggy stepped on his weasel with that comment.

Too bad, I kinda would have liked it for him to continue on with his condesending tirade.

I just gotta see him twisting when he gets in bed with jack layton though, thats the only way I can see them not voted into insignificance during the next election.

"radical conservative ideological world of Calgary"

Stop! It hurts! My side! Stop!

Posted by: rightwingprof at July 16, 2009 10:49 AM

Ignatieff isn't interested in votes from the West. He's after Quebec and Ontario and in particular, Toronto and Montreal.

Therefore, his rhetoric is geared to the 'Latte Set', the elites in these vote rich ridings who consider themselves the intellectual centre and font of intellectual sophistication. These are predominant in these cities as government bureaucrats and academics and are clearly differentiated from the rurals who merely work and thus don't have the time to think and reflect on aesthetics and philosophy...and the more dangerous rednecks who froth and fume and go to the Calgary Stampede.

He's also, as usual, dividing Canadians into Quebec and the ROC. Remember his Motion to have Quebec, the geographic province, defined as a nation. This focus on Calgary and the West is meant to set up an image of the Conservatives as anti-intellectual, anti-arts, anti-philosophical musing type of people..the antithesis of the Quebec self-image of international sophistication.

Posted by: ET at July 16, 2009 11:13 AM

I lived in that bastion of unadulterated greed, materialism and unbridled hubris for more years than I care to remember. I was never so happy to finally move from Calgary and relocate my company. Give me BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba or Quebec any day. They can have Harper, (I lived in his riding) as soon the rest of Canada, with the exception of Saskatchewan, won't want him.

Posted by: T at July 16, 2009 11:18 AM

The more Iggy talks the more Canadians will see that this is an arrogant, elitist who really could care less about seriously ordinary Canadians. As soon as Parliament ends he runs off to his "country" and is vacationing in Europe as we speak. You would think for somebody who wants to be PM he would spend the summer travelling Canada getting to know the various regions. No that's too pedestrian for him. Well the more he is exposed and Canadians see him they will surely know that this is not the type of person who should be PM. The Libs when they can't beat you resort to hatemongering and vilifying their opposition. The PM has been subjected to never ending personal attacks. However, the Libs generally can take the high ground because the media does it for them.

Posted by: hollinm at July 16, 2009 11:18 AM

Ignatieff cannot be accused of "All hat and no cattle".
He refused the tradition of wearing a western hat at the Calgary Stampede.

So is he "NO hat and All bull"?

Posted by: Lorraine at July 16, 2009 11:47 AM

The world according to Ignatieff:

Visiting Iran = good
Visiting Calgary = evil

Too bad for Iggy, now Harper will win all the seats in Alberta. You guys are jokers.

Calgary? So what?

Posted by: Chapped Out in T.O. at July 16, 2009 12:18 PM

I think it was Lorne Gunter writing in the Post a couple of years ago about his experience at a local community outdoor breakfast in a trendy area here in Ottawa known as the Glebe.

If I recall, the fixings included steak, eggs and whatnot. Someone suggested that the menu reflected prarie culture to which a woman seated next to Gunter laughingly replied: "the west has culture?"

When Gunter suggested to her that her flippant attitude was part of the reason for fomenting Western dissent within Confederation, she angrily looked away.

I don't pretend to understand the Glebe, but I don't think Iggy would have trouble making friends in that neighbourhood.

Posted by: PhilM at July 16, 2009 12:20 PM

T- your comment doesn't have the, ah, 'ring of truth'.

To assert that one city in Canada has an atmosphere of 'greed, materialism and hubris' while all other cities don't have such behaviour is nonsense.

Ever heard of brown paper bags of money passed from one Liberal hand to another in Montreal? Of its hordes of federal offices located there just for that 'greed, materialism and hubris'? What about Toronto's financial hub? What about the black market economy that is so much a vital part of the Quebec economy?

Nice try to, without evidence or any act of thinking, smear the Conservatives. Try to post using facts and reason.

Posted by: andycanuck at July 16, 2009 12:34 PM

I wonder who on Iggy's staff gave him the idea of trying the old Chretien east-against-west regional polarizing campaign?

Posted by: fly on the wall at July 16, 2009 12:40 PM

"is a politician formed and shaped in the radical conservative ideological world of Calgary..."

He says that like it's a bad thing.

And since when is being conservative "radical"? Most conservatives are traditional. Traditional and radical don't belong in the same frickin' sentence. Progressives are radical; if Iffy does not understand these simple definitions, he's not as smart as he thinks he is.

Looks like he won't be winning the west either. That fine Liberal tradition will continue.

Posted by: Soccermom at July 16, 2009 12:49 PM

Cowboy's not an insult in liberal land if you are a brokeback cowboy, just remember that. Brokeback - good; real cowboy - baaaaaad!

Posted by: Soccermom at July 16, 2009 12:56 PM

"...the radical conservative ideological world of Calgary..."

...where people sometimes think there might be a limit to the amount of power and money a government should have. And gee, wouldn't it be nice if I could go shooting Sunday afternoons without 47 forms filled out in triplicate and a police escort?

Radicals!!!!

Sounds kinda poetic, don't you think.

Smear all you want, I operate legitimate company, however, I have all employees that work in the company unionized and I had more clients outside of Alberta, hence the move to a more palatable social and economic climate.

Posted by: T at July 16, 2009 1:58 PM

Thankfully we have a Great Russian to clarimafy these issues for us. Youse people should show some gratitude. I thought for sure Ig would have taken umbraige at the embroidered peasant shirts Calgarians wear at the stampede.

T - you moved your 'company'? What's the matter, couldn't get subsidies/handouts?

Iggy is not without allies in the press - Jeffrey simpson being one.

Here is a recent column of his:

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/opinions/a-very-scary-pm-i-dont-believe-that-any-taxes-are-good-taxes/article1216778/

and here is Terence Corcoran's brilliant take down of him:

http://www.financialpost.com/opinion/columnists/story.html?id=543d63a0-148f-483e-bfe4-85f6333be683

well worth the read. and I suspect that Simpson is wincing from the smackdown...

"[Mr. Harper] is a politician formed and shaped in the radical conservative ideological world of Calgary..."

Wrong.
Stephen Harper was formed and shaped in Toronto Ontario, then he came to Calgary and was a mover and a shaker in the Alberta political arena.

Stephen Harper was one of the authors of the Firewall letter to Ralph Klein.
In the letter, Stephen Harper suggests nothing more than what Quebers have already done for themselves.

Can you just picture Iggy saying about Gilles Duceppe being "a politician formed and shaped in the radical French cultural ideological world of Montreal?

Bigoted Liberal identity politics at it's finest, that's Iggy.

"Smear all you want, I operate legitimate company, however, I have all employees that work in the company unionized and I had more clients outside of Alberta, hence the move to a more palatable social and economic climate."

Written by the incredibly obtuse persona named "T".

I call bull$hit. For all the misinformation you spread about the province, the fact is that Alberta is not a "union unfriendly" jursidiction.I know this because I've worked within a union in Calgary, and owned a business in Alberta. That's just $hit you've made up.

Go away.

"He refused the tradition of wearing a western hat at the Calgary Stampede."

He did far worse than that! He charged money, ($40 a head, I believe), for a purported 'Stampede Breakfast', actually a Fiberal Farty Fundraiser.

There are many Stampede barbecues, parties, dinners, hoedowns, and sundry whatnots that may have a closed attendance list or charge admittance. Stampede Breakfasts are not on that list. Stampede Breakfasts are free to all comers, end of story.

Count Iggula is not alone in his Stampede heresy, PMPM also charged for his 'Stampede Fundraiser', as did Dionne. Those Gliberals are all alike, it's hard to tell one from another without a program.

Posted by: Enkidu at July 16, 2009 8:32 PM

So what you're saying is that Count Iggula really isn't too concerned about facts?

Go figure.

We trust the Herald's Hannaford meant Monday June 29, not that we think Iggy will be any smarter by the end of the month.
