I'm sure that's the last time she gets an interview. I guess she didn't get the memo.

Posted by: gord at July 14, 2009 7:58 AM

Hmpffff!!!

Obviously the woman was blind to the magnetic charisma of America's Magic Negro and all his Hopey-Changiness!

Africa is surely doomed!

Posted by: Jim at July 14, 2009 7:59 AM

Aw, c'mon, they must have danced better for Obama!

Posted by: Liz J at July 14, 2009 8:12 AM

Well then this,

http://tinyurl.com/knq5dz

should make Mr. Lemon blanche in amazed stupification.

Posted by: Fred at July 14, 2009 8:25 AM

Snicker, snicker......not only did she tell him that Obama was pretty ordinary, she managed to sink the knife deep into his heart by insinuating that Bush may have even gotten a better response.

Posted by: Alberta Girl at July 14, 2009 8:34 AM

The really funny part is she doesn't understand what all the fuss is about. She lives in Africa, -all- the scummy politicians she meets are black.

Posted by: The Phantom at July 14, 2009 8:36 AM

Thanks, Kate.

These little YouTube moments are about the only occasion I ever have to watch CNN anymore.

Posted by: JJM at July 14, 2009 8:48 AM

I can't decide what is funnier, the look on his face or the sour twist on that old hag Helen Thomas when she finally found out that O'Bammy and team were screwing them.

Posted by: robins111 at July 14, 2009 8:57 AM

Seems like Bush actually did something for Africa , unlike Obama who so far has only supplied rhetoric.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/12/30/AR2006123000941.html
" ... President Bush's legacy is sure to be defined by his wielding of U.S. military power in Afghanistan and Iraq, but there is another, much softer and less-noticed effort by his administration in foreign affairs: a dramatic increase in U.S. aid to Africa.

The president has tripled direct humanitarian and development aid to the world's most impoverished continent since taking office and recently vowed to double that increased amount by 2010 -- to nearly $9 billion. ..."

Posted by: Brian at July 14, 2009 9:19 AM

Priceless! My dog snaps her head back like Don did when she doesn’t get what she wants. It’s cute when my dog does it, not so much with Don.

Posted by: nomdeblog at July 14, 2009 9:35 AM

LOL! At 36 seconds Lemon looks like he gets a boot to the nutz......that's the producer yelling in his ear.."You idiot she didn't get the memo yet!!"

Posted by: RFC at July 14, 2009 9:38 AM

Bush did an enormous amount for Africa, African leaders and people know it. It was done quietly without a lot of fanfare.

I suspect that Bush will likely have his charity work, post presidency, focus on Africa.

There is a disconnect between native Africans and African Americans....not any different than any splinter group, greek canadians and Greece etc...life moves on in the old country but the stories told in the new country are locked in amber, for good or ill.

African Americans have no connection to Africa, at best their generational connection to the tragedy is to great grandparents, probably great great grandparents. Obama has a closer connection to Africa, because his Dad was Kenyan, but what is his experience, beyond being abandoned. His dad was a smart, educated elite that was sent over for education. Hardly the experience of being kidnapped and sold by another tribe to be transported across the ocean to work as a slave.

There are lots of problems in Africa, Obama in his speech named lots of them; bad leaders, corrupt process and leaders, bad institutions, lack of respect for rule of law, focus on tribalism within country (a lack of citizenship in other words).

But Obama's ascendency to the presidnenc says more about America than it does about Africa and African's know it. Kind of what Kennedy's presidency said to Irish Catholics, wow I guess America has moved forward, but it didnt magically change Ireland.

Maybe one day we will stop focussing so much on skin colour, because it implies nothing about incompetence or competence. There was at least one reason to cheer Obama's victory, that it removes the excuse that there are limits to skin colour. Well, that argument is hard to make in America now....if Obama isnt the reason to get rid of racial preference I dont what is. You can focus on economic staus, if you think that works from a policy perspective, but racial preference should be stopped now and forever more.

It may, repeat may, have had a purpose at one point. Now racial preferences become like any other overly generous welfare program, it corodes the ability to strive and acheive, and rewards the undeserving.

As someone said, a black leader in Africa isn't that amazing, they see them all the time. And they know to judge a leader by actions rather than skin colour, most African leaders are found sadly wanting.

I was watching CNN when Palin joined the ticket. Lemon came on with some intimation of scandal he'd gleaned from the web, practically slobbering on himself with excitement. He's worse than most when it comes to hiding his cheer leading.

Posted by: hudson duster at July 14, 2009 10:01 AM

That look you get when, having taken time to position yourself, settled your breathing, aimed very carefully at the target and pulled the trigger, the audible "click" tells you that you've got a dud round.
Oh well, there's always tomorrow. Heh.

Posted by: DrD at July 14, 2009 10:02 AM

Can hardly wait to get home so I can watch it.

No flash on work computers. Probably for this very reason. ;)

DrD A dud round or not alert enough to have even loaded the gun.

Lemon is a 'dipstick', along with most of the CNN cast !!

Obama chooses to see his connection to Africa in a unique way, as part of the perpetual victim hood of slavery, instead of seeing it through HIS ancestors eyes, as willing participants and profiteers from the trade.

Posted by: Kursk at July 14, 2009 11:16 AM

President Barack Obama says slavery is a terrible part of the United States' history and should be taught in a meaningful way.

I would hope that they would teach all the facts about slavery including how the Arabs did the kidnapping of the slaves. I am not about to hold my breath waiting on that one.

Sign her up for SDA and the Republican Party, better yet, ask her to Canada, the Conservative Party could us a little colour on the benches. This gal knew exactly what CNN was up to and wasn't going to play their game.

Posted by: Larry Bennett at July 14, 2009 11:51 AM

She says that they react that way with all visitors and that George W even danced along with them when he was there. Get down George! Where were all the plaudits for him?

Posted by: Larry Bennett at July 14, 2009 12:02 PM

African Americans have no connection to Africa...

I often wonder why that term entered common usage; it doesn't seem to make any taxonomical or genealogical sense. To a degree, one can understand why the pejorative "nigger" was replaced by "black", but even in that case there seems to be justification to keep both words in the vernacular.

Posted by: glasnost at July 14, 2009 12:03 PM

Bush couldn't speak well so seldom bothered to grandstand as Teleprompter Jesus [AOS] is wont to do. Most of the Africans probably realized what they saw with "W" was genuine: Concern, enjoyment and real openness.

Suspect there also might well be a sour taste associated with TJ's treatment of his half brother living with disease in the filth of a viscious Nairobi ghetto. Obama doesn't want to be associated with it. Bush wanted to fix it.

Phantom - yeah, had to watch the video twice - the first time was spent thinking - she's so dreamy!

Posted by: Erik Larsen at July 14, 2009 1:01 PM

Let alone his snide remark at the end "they welcome everyone . . . that's just part of how the people do it"

Condescending. He didn't get the response he wanted

Disgusting!

Posted by: K Stricker at July 14, 2009 1:12 PM

Silly woman! Lemon lobbed her a softball and she not only chose to lay off the pitch but she actually put in a good word for GWB. Outrageous!

Lemon's reaction was priceless. It appeared that a stray Rottweiler had wandered into the studio and latched onto his testicles.

Posted by: biffjr. at July 14, 2009 1:34 PM

dittos to Phantom and Eric...!
I would like to see him interviewing Dambisa Moyo, that would make for some interesting facial expressions I'm sure. And referred to as being part of "the cast" ... gotta love being referred to as "the cast" as a "journalist" heh...

Oz, funny that Mr. Taylor comes up in todays news... he is being so slandered and lied (Damn lies I tell you!) about as he takes the stand today in The Hague, and a verdict is expected, next year? wow.

Posted by: marc in calgary at July 14, 2009 1:50 PM

Stay on message, woman!
I wonder if she knew that she was giving him a spike in blood pressure.

Posted by: Black Mamba at July 14, 2009 1:55 PM

I have to say, for me, Don Lemon is one of the main reasons (of many) I don't watch CNN...

He's also not much of a journo if he hasn't seen Africans welcoming other politicians before. I love how she specifically mentions Bush - that must have given him a bit of heartburn, eh?

Posted by: Soccermom at July 14, 2009 2:05 PM

Ok, now THAT right there was fun!!

You could see the eyes glaze over when she said Bush. Off he went into his happy place.

Don Lemon's head jerk: What happens when convention meets reality.

Posted by: Joe at July 14, 2009 2:57 PM

I'm SMILING!

What a prima don[na] Lemon is/as lemon does. It's the very lovely African reporter who's got the coj*nes!

Just beautiful . . . Thanks, Soccermom!

Posted by: lookout at July 14, 2009 3:06 PM

"Wait a Second! We are talking about the same President here are we not?"

What an embarassing thing for Don Lemon to be unmasked for all to see. What is worse is where was he when President Bush visited and did the dance that CNN mocked him for?

Perhaps he watches MSNBC in order to sharpen his world perception? [ insert eye roll ]

Posted by: Illiquid Assets at July 14, 2009 4:37 PM

"So Africans have seen someone walk on water before?"

"Oh yes, this is Africa, we see all sorts of wonderful things."

"But surely when Bush was visiting you must've aimed at him with your poison darts, no?"

"No, he was very well received, why do you ask?"

"Well, that's all the time we have...thank you for joining us today."

Wow.

Posted by: Gen. Lee Wright at July 14, 2009 6:03 PM

I'd bet that 99% of people who DO watch CNN wouldn't have noticed Lemon's wince.

They were already frothing at the mouth becuase she mentioned GWB when they wanted to hear O-B-A-M-A ...... Unprecedented.

Posted by: OMMAG at July 14, 2009 6:40 PM

“Obama has a closer connection to Africa, because his Dad was Kenyan,……”

Obamba’s Kenyan Grandmother is on record saying that Obamba was born in Kenya and that “she helped deliver him”.

Obamba still cannot prove his American birthright.

“I would hope that they would teach all the facts about slavery including how the Arabs did the kidnapping of the slaves”

I agree! Early white “slavers” did not catch slaves in western Africa. They purchased them from black slavers who physically caught slaves. It was going on thousands of years before white’s landed on African shores and still goes on today.

Aside from elite prominent white families in Europe and the Southern US of the day, how many whites owned slaves anyway? How many white people commenting on SDA can claim that they every owned slaves in their family lineage? Most likely none to be sure.

Posted by: Knight 99 at July 15, 2009 3:39 AM

Certainly a refreshing look at a reporter, who was clearly indicating that she would give an honest answer.
In a way, very reassuring to know that such persons exist and this might dispel any inner bias, on the part of others.
Africa has had a bad press to an extent. This re certain political machinations and even violence. It cannot be as easy, as it is United States for a reporter/journalist to say what is NOT expected.

Which of course, many of the media do NOT do. They merely hit the soft pitch out of the park.

Posted by: Peter (Lock City) at July 15, 2009 11:18 AM

The golden age of Islam came at a time when they found a huge silver deposit in Afghanistan, and lasted until it petered out. When they had it, they used it to buy slaves from all over the world; textiles from the far east. Didn't need to work very hard to be rich. Viking raids on Britain and France were often to secure slaves to sell in Baghdad. One of the proofs of this, besides the written historical record, is that silver coins with the Arabic inscription "God is Great" have often been found in Viking grave cairns.

One of my favorite lines from the history of the era was what one Muslim wrote about the Vikings. He said they had the most physically perfect bodies he had ever seen, but were as "dumb as donkeys."

Posted by: tim in vermont at July 15, 2009 1:16 PM

Well I know this is completely off-topic now, but since Alan and tim in vermont started it, anyone who'se interested in the Arabs and the slave-trade should look up David Livingstone (as in "Dr. Livingstone, I presume") and the Nyangwe massacre he witnessed in 1871, when Arab slave-traders opened fire on the marketplace of a town in what is the present-day D.R. of Congo. Hundreds were killed (Wikipedia says 600).

My Encyclopaedia Brit 13th ed. says:
"...a party of arab slavers, without warning or provocation, assembled one day when the market was busiest and commenced shooting the women, hundreds being killed or drowned in trying to escape. Livingstone had 'the impression that he was in hell', but was helpless..."

Reports of this event were a big deal when they made their way back to London. Note that this took place after the American Civil war.
