Is there nothing that Obama can't do?
Posted by Kate at June 25, 2009 3:01 PMAs the Iranian government’s murderous repression of the Iranian people continues, critics right and left agitate over the deafening silence of an American president who, as a candidate, derided the Bush administration’s ambitious democracy promotion as too timid. They speculate as to why Barack Obama won’t speak out: Why won’t he condemn the mullahs? Is he daft enough to believe he can charm the regime into abandoning its nuclear ambitions? Does the self-described realist so prize stability that he thinks it’s worth abandoning the cause of freedom — and the best chance in 30 years of dislodging an implacable American enemy?
In truth, it’s worse than that. Even as the mullahs are terrorizing the Iranian people, the Obama administration is negotiating with an Iranian-backed terrorist organization and abandoning the American proscription against exchanging terrorist prisoners for hostages kidnapped by terrorists. Worse still, Obama has already released a terrorist responsible for the brutal murders of five American soldiers in exchange for the remains of two deceased British hostages.
Prepare to be infuriated.
Once again the Democrats betray those who wish for democracy.

Posted by: Osumashi Kinyobe at June 25, 2009 4:13 PMI can't help but think things are going to go very wrong for Obama on foreign policy issues. I'm guessing that when Kim Jong Il lobs one of his over-sized RPG's at Hawaii around the July 4th holiday, he'll issue a strongly worded tut tut.
Hardly surprising he's negotiating with terrorists; his political career was launched in the home of one.
I suppose if anybody is now a firm believer in "Hope and Change", it must be the terrorists.
This man is a Clear & Present danger to the US, and will likely do incalculable damage to the country before he is tossed out in 2012. Good luck, America; you (and the rest of the world) need it.

I gather this is the new math as taught by Asaib al-Haq (League of the Righteous).
I'm sure the dead soldiers are impressed by this as well. Yep, those Geneva conventions surely saved the soldiers.
New lesson for soldiers in uniform, don't get captured.

For more advanced reading...
The Shi’a insurgent group Asaib Ahl al‐Haq began its operations as early as July 2006, one month
after Iranian‐backed Special Groups were reorganized under the leadership of Qais Khazali. Their first
attacks claimed to be in support of Operation True Promise (Hezbollah’s July 12, 2006 raid into Israel
during which three Israeli soldiers were killed and two captured) and in retaliation for Israel’s
subsequent attacks into southern Lebanon.20 AAH professes allegiance to the legacy of Mohammad
Sadeq al‐Sadr (Sadr II). In 2006, there were at least four major operational branches of the group: the
Imam al‐Ali Brigade, which was responsible for southern Iraq; the Imam al‐Kazem (Kathem) Brigade,
which was responsible for west Baghdad; the Imam al‐Hadi Brigade, which was responsible for east
Baghdad; and the Imam al‐Askeri Brigade, which was responsible for Diyala and Kirkuk. From mid to late
2006, AAH conducted frequent attacks on Coalition Forces, using improvised explosive devices (IEDs),
indirect rocket or mortar fire, or sniper fire. In the first half of 2007, there is no public evidence of AAH
attacks. AAH reemerges in July 2007, although their video claims of attacks no longer reference the
separate brigades of their organization, as they had in the past. This suggests that there was a
reorganization of the network in the spring of 2007.
Asaib Ahl al‐Haq continued their attacks on Coalition Forces from mid‐2007 until May 2008.
During the Sadr City offensive, AAH conducted attacks in Baghdad, primarily in the areas in and around
Sadr City. Multi‐National Force‐Iraq stated that JAM and Special Groups militias were also operating in
these areas at the time, and the latter was providing assistance to the former.21 MNF‐I continued to call
these militants members of Special Groups, rogue JAM, and criminals, rather than AAH.
The lull in AAH activity from May to July 2008 corresponded with the departure of thousands of
Iraqi militants to Iran to avoid capture in the wake of their losses in the spring offensives. While in Iran,
fighters consolidated their networks and were retrained in new tactics.22
AAH continued to attack Coalition Forces in the summer and fall of 2008 with EFPs; they also
engaged in kidnapping, intimidation, and sectarian violence.23 Coalition Forces conduct raids against the
AAH network, particularly targeting weapons smugglers and financiers. In the first half of October, U.S.
troops seized more than $400,000 dollars from AAH financiers—an amount indicating that the network
has funding on par with that of Special Groups.24 The raids also suggested that AAH was rebuilding their
networks that had been disrupted in the spring offensives. In the town of Qasirin in Diyala province,
Coalition Forces captured a suspected AAH weapons and finance facilitator who “was attempting to
restart “Asaib al Haq” in the Qasarin area in Diyala Province.”25

I think it should be clear to everyone at this point that Obama values the lurve above being feared. Unfortunately, it looks like he is not even getting respect at this point. He is off to a worse start than Kennedy, and he shows no signs of the intelligence or spine that Kennedy needed to recover from his early mistakes.
The day of the first protest, there should have been about 12 container ships full of guns on their way to Iran. Should have just handed them out on street corners.
Posted by: Kevin Lafayette at June 25, 2009 4:39 PMif only there was an honest man/woman in government maybe someone would nuke these bastards and we could get on with real life.
Posted by: old white guy at June 25, 2009 4:39 PMThis guy is going to be run out of office later this year or for sure in 2010, when enough people in the USA realize what the conservative portion of the Republicans have known all along -- Obama is essentially a traitor just looking for ways to weaken the power and capability of the USA. He is placing freedom around the world in a precarious position, his rhetoric means nothing when it isn't code for more weakness, and he is an extreme danger to our security both in the USA and in Canada because our two countries are so closely linked (not to mention neighbours).
The only question is, which of our many enemies will strike the first major blow? China, Russia, the Islamic terrorists, Iran, North Korea, the narco-states? The line-up is getting pretty long.

What a pippin! He can get along with anybody.

i couldn't agree more.....back a bit during the electioneering why this 'clown' wasn't hooted off the stage when he averred there were 57 states eludes me.....how do you maintain even a scintilla of creds after that remark ?
Posted by: john begley at June 25, 2009 4:49 PMHe visited 57 states and there were 4 left. Total of 61 state.
Posted by: Aaron at June 25, 2009 4:51 PMYes, he IS daft enough to think that he can charm any and all to do what he wants, including Iran dropping its nuclear ambitions.
He is NOT a realist. He is totally detached from reality, unable to react and interact with the real world. He lives in a fictional world of his own making, where he controls all entrance and participants.
If he feels you moving out of his control, this makes him uneasy; he'll deride, belittle and eventually, attack you. Examples includes his belittling insults to European leaders and heads of state. His belittling of the Tea Parties, which his people will now try to prevent re-occurring. And his constant references to Limbaugh, Hannity, FOX news, etc. Or the IG whom he fired, without due process.
If you are outside of his control - then you don't exist. You have absolutely no reality. So, he'll trivialize Iran's uprising because he can't control it. He feels no empathy with anyone outside of his fictional world.
Same with N. Korea; it has no reality for him.
He'll pompously assert that Israel should enable a Palestinian state. But when Netanyahu replies, sure, but then nullifies such a reality by claiming the West Bank land as 'essentially Israel's property' - which means there's no land base for a Palestinian state - Obama will pretend this is a 'victory'. And go silent.
He'll finally claim that the uprising in Iran is due to his Cairo speech, which is nonsense - Iranians can think for themselves - but say nothing to help them promote democracy.
Obama's world is all about himself; about his basic psychological need to control people, to manipulate them. That means that he's great as a salesman; he's great on the campaign trail. But, since he can't relate to anyone whom he can't control - then, he's disastrous as a leader of a free nation.
Both his foreign actions and his domestic actions are disastrous. The former is empowering tyrants and dictatorships; the latter is weakening the USA.
Posted by: ET at June 25, 2009 4:52 PMThere is no mystery here, Obama is a Muslim (despite the fact that he is a Reverend Wright America hating Christian) and he cannot chastise his Mullahs in Iran.

--Actually, Ratt, those "Aryan" idiots are on the other guys' side. They're National Socialists like Obama and the Democrats (KKK was the Dems' militant wing), and anti-Semites. Strange bedfellows, you know. Besides, the Muslim Brotherhood and the Nazis were on the same side (there were officially Muslim Nazi soldiers) due to their shared anti-Semitism. The situation in the MidEast also has roots in Nazism. So forget about the "Aryan" morons.
Of course, strange bedfellows, when they climb into bed together, one of 'em will get the shaft... If they defeat their mutual enemy, they'll then turn on one another.

Posted by: john at June 25, 2009 5:50 PMSeems like everybody's got a good handle on this. And ET, you're pretty persuasive as you usually are.
I think one of the things swing voters are beginning ro realize is that Obama is not a leader.
The intellectual paragidm that informs his actions has him now making conciliatory comments to a tyrannical regime shooting its own citizens.
How can this be?
Well Obama is a charming guy. He would probably make an adequate diplomat. He would probably be good at embassy parties. He would probably be able to get off the record and give people a sense that we were all on the same page.
Mrs. Obama could probably work hard at demonstrating her abilities at being a fashion plate.
But leadership requires turning away from focus groups and polls and trying to finesse every situation to be inclusive.
You have to be forceful and have a straightforward understanding of your own direction and why it is for the best.
Obama just doesn't have these qualities. And I think that a lot of people who could go either way are beginning to sense this about him.
