This is not your grandma's humane society. Think PETA, with a better business model.
It's astonishing how many in media seem unaware of the nature of this group - even Rush Limbaugh has been sucked in by this scam.
Rhetoric and padded PR budgets trump "actually doing something constructive". This is news? It's all about the appearance of "doing something" and "raising awareness". Nice work if your psyche can justify the posturing, media whoring, self-defined salaries and lack of concrete results for your efforts.
Posted by: PiperPaul at June 25, 2009 2:54 AMIs this really surprising?
Here in Canada, prior to their near take-over by animal rights activists....the Humane Societies functioned largely to provide their EMPLOYEES a living and a good one at that.
And then there is PETA putting down thousands of animals at their national hq every year... A lot of charities start out with honourable intentions but when the money rolls in it is hard for them to send it out to where it is needed. A lot of ankles are broken trying to get on the gravytrain but that's okay because the organizers have good medical coverage.
If all or a very high percentage of your charity donation doesn't go directly to the intended purpose then it is time to give elsewhere.
The ASPCA and HSUS are two examples of once great humanitarian institutions degenerated to crass profiteering.
ASPCA is now nothing more than a pet euthenasia and eugenics cult and HSUS lobbies against agricultural animal husbandry, fishing and wildlife management.
Posted by: Billy Bragg at June 25, 2009 8:02 AMAnother example of the lefty fine art of creating non-jobs by masterful playing of people's desires to be good.
People act in their self interest. Something to keep in mind when a lefty feel good cause strolls up with its hand out.

Posted by: Fred at June 25, 2009 8:16 AMI am not sure if you remember, but there was a series of articles in Tor Star written by Kevin Donovan. In one of those articles there was a bar chart showing how much money collected was being used for its intended purpose. If you are still donating to charity, you should dig up that chart and give it a second thought.
Posted by: Aaron at June 25, 2009 8:43 AMDoes any one remember when unitedway came into being. what percentage was creamed off the top by the founder. Was "suposed to stop" the season of putting your hand out. Boy that turned out well
Posted by: Tony W at June 25, 2009 9:26 AMI would guess that 90% of the current North American (and Western European) population borders on earth and animal worship.
We call it a "right" to terminate a fetus but would kill another human being to protect a puppy.
Posted by: Doug at June 25, 2009 10:26 AMI for one am happy the MSM has discovered this little fact.
Years too late of course.
Yet they have. Maybe they started researching blogs?
