Y2Kyoto: Dead Men Don't Exhale

Surrey Leader;

The Lower Mainland's health authorities will have to dig more than $4 million a year out of their already stretched budgets to pay B.C.'s carbon tax and offset their carbon footprints.

[...]

The Fraser Health Authority will pay $616,000 in carbon tax this year, rising to $821,000 next year, officials there said.

And by 2010 Fraser will also be paying $1.3 million a year to the province's Pacific Carbon Trust to offset its projected 52,600 tonnes of carbon emissions released.

The trust pays out money to offset projects – for example to help a firm upgrade its industrial heating system so less carbon-based fossil fuel is used. The carbon emissions saved are counted against what the paying arm of government emits.

Vancouver Coastal Health Authority also expects its costs will be close to $2 million next year in combined carbon tax and offset payments.

Fraser Health officials are grappling with a budget shortfall of more than $100 million and potential cuts to patient services, while low on their list, have not been ruled out.

A personal message for our carbon cultist friends out there - when the costs of your government mandated climate scams begin to extend the government mandated wait lists for diagnosis and treatment, my only consolation will come from knowing that some the family members who cease CO2 emission prematurely will be yours.

BC Taxpayer: "Well, that's another fine mess you've gotten me into."

There isn't enough bud in BC to explain this idiodicy, people on the left coast must be born stupid.

Sp we are are letting people die in longer waiting lines so we can buy carbon credits from China ?

Well that should help the Chinese finance more coal fired electrical plants.

It's a win-win situation. Let's also hope Al Gore gets to skim something off the top by arranging the offset sale. Pope Al needs all the money he can get to pay his massive electrical bill and fuel his huge gas guzzling boat.

Posted by: Fred at June 24, 2009 11:18 AM

Where are the people smart? I'll move into that province.

Posted by: Aaron at June 24, 2009 11:18 AM

I'm going to laugh if this carbon offset crap is what finally puts a stake through the heart of state funded medicine in this country. I really am.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: This is the start of people getting really Pssed off.
Bring it on!

Posted by: bob at June 24, 2009 11:21 AM

We must not let an obstacle such as patient care come between a government and your money.

They have important global conferences to attend and other criminal government officials in the Green Tax movement to impress.

I'll be they love getting together to compare how much they were able to bilk out of their citizens in the name of the Green Scam. Like a political pissing contest.

And that is about how useful this carbon taxing is. And I think it will bring down more than just medical services, it's going to bring down Capitalism, but then, that's the goal isn't it?

Posted by: Momar at June 24, 2009 11:25 AM

There's always a silver lining.

Small dead greenies, is consolation, for now.

"There isn't enough bud in BC to explain this idiodicy, people on the left coast must be born stupid."

I moved to BC about 15 years ago and noticed the same thing. I feel like a freaking genius here.

Posted by: Momar at June 24, 2009 11:28 AM

At least we know that "scientifically proven" programs like drug injection sites (also run by Fraser health) won't be affected.

Posted by: ural at June 24, 2009 11:31 AM

Gordo Campbell got drunk one night on vacation and got a DUI. That experience definitely messed with his brain because he hasn't had a good idea since.

He's an embarrassment. And now Carole James (NDP leader) has officially said she likes the carbon tax, too. Stupid.

"There isn't enough bud in BC to explain this idiodicy, people on the left coast must be born stupid."

LOL! The first thing I thought was stupid once I moved here was this little ferry going across a very narrow river. Hundreds of people every day waited an average of 45 mins to cross. Being a transplanted prairie girl I wondered, "Why the heck don't they build a frickin' bridge? This is ridiculous!"

Two weeks ago they finally opened the Golden Ears Bridge, connecting Langley and Maple Ridge.

So maybe there's hope. Maybe it just takes a lot of time (and waste) before they see the light?? A shame, though.

All this greenie goodness stuff is wonderful Mom & Apple pie chit chat discussion fodder.

Now that people have to start paying for it, politicians will need to factor that aspect into their decisions. They loved it when the environmental industry organized the Great Green Scare - it was a nice parade even a dumb politician could jump in front of and say "follow-me".

When the parade was full of "Save the Planet" signs, the politicians loved it. When the parade turns to a mob with pitchforks, they'll throw the greenie crap under the bus faster than a Jim Hanson can lie about Global Warming.

Jason said "BC has a liberal party and a NDP but no conservative party. Nuff said."

I'll say. But you forgot to mention there is a Green Party who gets to take part in the debates even though they have no elected MLAs.

When the Green Party THE GREEN PARTY! has more prominence than the BC Conservatives, then you know there is a huge problem in the brains department out here.

Warren Buffet who is a huge Hillary supporter weather he swung that support behind zero I don't know. However he was on CNBC this morning very upset about cap and trade says it is a huge tax that will be very hurtful to the poor peoples.
Of course he also mentions in passing that he owns a utility.

Isn't it wonderful to see his concern for the poor.

Our steadfast US congress and their maximum leader Barrack are right now working on single payer insurance and cap and trade, saying that cap and trade will pay for the health insurance.

Stories don't get any timelier than this.

Posted by: tim in vermont at June 24, 2009 12:36 PM

From the Article...

Vancouver Coastal chief financial officer Duncan Campbell said his health authority believes the payments are appropriate and isn't asking for any exemption from Victoria.

"For us to go back and ask for an exemption wouldn't fit in well with our green care plans," he said.

--------------------->>>>

What the hell is green care?

When you care more about the grass outside than the patients inside then we have a serious crisis in Healthcare.

Plus they are simply paying the Government money that they got from the Government! Recycling is cool!

I say no more free needles for drug users because they are made from plastics, which conatin distillates from oil, and by extension are evil. So no more IVs, Blood Bags, surgical gloves, hell no more Petroleum Jelly!

The BC Carbon Tax had a huge shortfall, and because Government cannot even tax right, they already gave out more tax breaks and equalization payments than they can bring in this year even if they increased the tax to $25 Tonne from the 15 scheduled for July 1 (Canada Day how fitting).

Add on the 50% increase in welfare and we are on to a 2B budget shortfall after a 500M surplus, but we have the best Gavernment of the options available, how sad is that?

Good News for BC is that the WCI (Western Climate Initiative) is basically going to fail because of inquiries into staffing and funding from States that did not support the plan or the funding of the program. So part two of the Great Green Vision will be delayed, then derailed by Federal Cap and Tax plans in the USA.

Great caption Kate, "Dead men don't exhale."

This perhaps also explains the chronic shortage of isotopes for various radiographs.

No radiographs, no diagnosis, no treatment, no life, no CO2.

Just thought we'd complete the "no health care picture" for you.

Which leads us to the aphorism:

"There are two certainties in life, death and taxes.

There are those who believe that death is the preferable of the two, as the latter only gets worse every time Parliament meets!"

There is no significant conservative party in BC because BC politics is based on people voting for whatever party has the best chance of preventing the commie hordes from seizing power. This was the Social Credit party for years until they disintegrated. We did have a libertarian party for a while (in the form of the 2002 Marijuana party) but that unfortunately didn't last.

Carbon taxes are going to be the undoing of the BC lieberals and they barely squeeked in during the last election. I voted Conservative in the last provincial election and, here in the interior, the lieberals are not popular. When healthcare starts getting cut to pay idiotic carbon taxes people will really get pissed off as there is a feeling in the interior that people here are second class citizens when it comes to health care. In Vancouver I could get a cardiac stress test done in a week, pulmonary function tests within 2-3 weeks whereas in the interior the waiting list for both of these tests is 6-12 months. When we get the next really cold winter and people see how much money is being gouged from them for Campbell's folly change might come to BC.

Posted by: loki at June 24, 2009 2:28 PM

It has nothing to do with climate change or global warming or whatever. It is all about raising taxes.

Never mind the injection sites, I've been in Surrey Memorial emergency and it's full of drugged out losers too, with zombies wandering the hall looking for cigarettes or whatever. I'm nearly dying of chest pain and the nurses at all the hospitals in the Lower Mainland are kept busy trying to bring people out of overdoses. Few will talk about it, in
the hospital, but it's scary the amount of money being spent.

Don't know if he's concerned for the poor or not Jefftard, but that who get's disproportionately hurt by this. When you raise the price of fuel, utilities add this to the (power, gas, oil, etc.) bill. Where else do you put it? History is instructive. Check utility rates over the last two years as the price of oil, coal, natural gas climbed.

Follow the money and find out why Mr. Suzuki and his friends curiously supported the Liberals over the NDP on the carbon tax/offsetting:

First, this announcement on June 3rd by VANOC here, which actually caught my eye and prompted some investigation:

http://www.vancouversun.com/Vanoc+reaches+deal+help+stage+carbon+neutral+Games/1659349/story.html

"The Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee has announced an estimated $5-million partnership with B.C.-based carbon offset firm Offsetters Clean Technology to help it stage a carbon-neutral Olympics next year."

“The David Suzuki Foundation has estimated the Games will produce about 110,000 tonnes of direct carbon emissions and another 220,000 tonnes of indirect emissions from air travel.”

So Vanoc has given Offsetters $5MM for offsetting the Olympics and David Suzuki an undisclosed amount to measure the carbon emissions. Actually, this is through the brand new Crown Corporation Pacific Carbon Trust, seen here:

http://www.pacificcarbontrust.ca/Portals/0/Pacific%20Carbon%20Trust%20Purchases%20First%20Set%20of%20Offsets.pdf

“The Pacific Carbon Trust (PCT) signed an agreement with Offsetters Clean Technology Inc. to purchase high-quality emission offsets to address climate change in B.C., Finance Minister Colin Hansen announced today.”

“The projects were sourced by industry aggregator (wholesaler) Offsetters Clean Technology Inc., an early entrant to this innovative arena in Canada.”

“Budget 2008 provided the Pacific Carbon Trust (PCT) with $24 million in funding over four years to cover the cost of starting up the new Crown corporation, building a solid portfolio of credible offsets from B.C.-based projects, and developing its capacity and expertise to meet growing demand, while supporting industry growth in B.C. “

“Last October, the PCT released a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to source offset suppliers. The five-year purchase agreement with Offsetters supports clean energy innovations in five projects. Over the five years the projects provide the ability to offset 330,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. “

Oh, there’s Offsetters Clean Technology again!

Let’s have a look at them, in particular this man, James Tansey:

“James co-founded Offsetters in 2005, and currently sits as its President. James Tansey is the Executive Director of the Centre for Sustainability and Social Innovation and Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia’s Sauder School of Business.”

The Centre for Sustainability and Social Innovation ? Sauder School of Business? UBC?

http://www.sauder.ubc.ca/FacultyResearch/ResearchCentres/CentreforSustainabilityandSocialInnovation/AboutUs/default.htm

As an aside (this is a whole other discussion):

“The Centre focuses on four key strategic ares:

1. The Incubation of Social Innovation
2. Research in Social Innovation
3. Strategic Corporate Social Responsibility
4. Enhancing Human Capital”

How cute…Incubation of Social Innovation

And from the Centre’s annual report:

“Over the last 24 months we have been working on a project to examine the role of international carbon markets in supporting development goals in Canada and abroad. As part of this activity we have continued to support Offsetters Clean Technology Inc., …”

He’s supporting himself!!!!! But so is the government:

“In January 2008, the Premier of British Columbia announced the establishment of a $94 million endowment to provide long-term support to the four research universities through the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS).”

It goes way further too, the Centre is linked to Appleton Charitable Foundation and in turn the Clinton Foundation.

And, look who is on the Suzuki Foundation’s Honorary Board

http://www.davidsuzuki.org/About_us/Board_of_Directors.asp

“Honorary Board Members
Margaret Atwood
James Burke
Dr. Wade Davis
Dr. Paul Ehrlich
Peter Garrett
Gordon Lightfoot
Mike Robinson
Sting
Maurice Strong
Dr. E.O. Wilson
Sir Edward Goldsmith
Raffi Cavoukian”

It’s `Uncle Mo! Surprised? Not really but kinda. After all he is the master.

So, to link back to the post, these Health Authority offsets involve all the same people.

It's like our very own mini-Chicago. And to think, when Gordon Campbell first got elected, he planned to privatize ICBC and the provincial Liquor Stores, not create newer, more pervasive ones.

B.C., we got Liberals!

To add insult to injury, I just spent 6 hours the other night waiting in emergency in Surrey, BC (falls under Fraser Health Authority)

Dead Men Don't Exhale

Ya, but they do de-compose.

(even if they were not composers in real life)

When we die, we will give back 18.6 % of our body weight in carbon, in one form or the other, and about 75 % in another form of greenhouse gas - water vapour.

Elements in the Human Body

Will I have to buy carbon credits for my funeral?
