Up With Flies

Every day is April 1:

PEOPLE for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is upset with US President Barack Obama killing a fly during a televised interview.
PETA is sending President Barack Obama a Katcha Bug Humane Bug Catcher, a device that allows users to trap a house fly and then release it outside.

No word on whether PETA has a walk-in freezer to store the thousands of dead flies they had to euthanize when they couldn't find an above-freezing outdoor environment to release them in.

Posted by EBD at June 18, 2009 6:28 PM

h/t ghostofaflea? Barack Obama murdered that flea, you know, and now it's seeking revenge.
(That "walk-in freezer" bit just ruined PETA's credibility with me, BTW, which was odd because that was my first clue that they'd ever had any.)

Posted by: Black Mamba at June 18, 2009 6:55 PM

I am at a loss to think of a more vacuous, scum-sucking organization than PETA.

HRCs are the only things I think come close.

Posted by: SDH at June 18, 2009 7:02 PM

Good thing he didn't swat PETA huckster Pamela Anderson,
otherwise they would have had to call in the hazmat team.

Posted by: Vitruvius at June 18, 2009 7:08 PM

Aye, Vitruvius: silicon, peroxide, mascara and Nair are highly explosive when mixed together and exposed to air.

Posted by: EBD at June 18, 2009 7:16 PM

this just in:

in a related story, PETA has announced they are pressing charges against 95% of the human population with the war crimes court in Belgium for all the inhumane treament of blue bottles, horse flies, mosquitoes . . .

is there any sanity left in the world?

Posted by: SWAT at June 18, 2009 7:17 PM

The only thing more ridiculous than this story is that the media actually sought out PETA's opinions:

"Believe it or not, we've actually been contacted by multiple media outlets wanting to know PETA's official response to the executive insect execution," a blog on the group's website explained.

Posted by: TimR at June 18, 2009 7:19 PM

we've actually been contacted by multiple media outlets wanting to know PETA's official response to the executive insect execution

They should have contacted Bill Clinton to ask who had the faster hands.

Posted by: rabbit at June 18, 2009 7:44 PM

Don't you see the metaphor?

That fly is the American people and the POTUS literally wore his disdain for them on his sleeve.

Posted by: PhilM at June 18, 2009 7:45 PM

Posted by: rabbit at June 18, 2009 7:44 PM
Bill was faster, but that was his own fly.

Posted by: wallyj at June 18, 2009 7:51 PM

Did they leave an address where I can send the stunned flies that survive my bug zapper? They need a loving environment in which to recuperate. I hope it is some PETA household where they can lay their eggs in the tofu and spread typhoid, anthrax, leprosy, cholera, tuberculosis, dysentery and tape worms to someone who is truly deserving of the gifts of these misunderstood creatures.

Posted by: Buffalo Irving at June 18, 2009 7:51 PM

Wallyj - that's the line of the day/week/month etc!

Posted by: Erik Larsen at June 18, 2009 8:06 PM

I wonder if they will complain to China. With 1 billion flyswatters attacking the flies PETA would have a hay-day. I wonder if PETA members are all vegetarians and environMENTALists – emphases on mental. I also wonder if they requested that the fly be sent to their main office for proper burial – perhaps we all should send insects to PETA for that. Is there a Canadian office? US customs would not allow our insects to cross border without proper identification.

I would challenge one of the less-mentally-secure PETA members to go near Old Crow [Yukon] and walk among the flies and mosquitoes and not kill one of the little BUGgers.

PETA members would be great for experiments on the spread of malaria through mosquitoes or eating food covered with flies - and hope they do not get sick. I think they try to identify with the animals and insects; therefore they have the brains of a flea [or a chicken with the head cut off.]

Wonder if they hate spiders and frogs … THEY KILL FLIES ! PETA also must hate cars and other forms of transportation – with the mass killing of flies and other insects on the grill and windshields must drive them crazy.

PETA could also stand for: Pierre Elliot Trudeau Activists/Animal lovers/suggestions from you

I'm waiting for a bunch of PETA types to get nekid or dress like flies and flop around Halifax until the bus comes.

Posted by: Texas Canuck at June 18, 2009 8:10 PM

Well there goes the anti-malaria campaign. Even if it doesn't kill the mosquitoes, it will seriously damage the Plasmodium malariae population.

Perhaps PETA members will volunteer to host the little darlings.

Posted by: rabbit at June 18, 2009 8:11 PM

I'm surprised they're making a fuss over flies. I used to consider them "People for the ethical treatment of cute and cuddly animals" (eg. seal hunting)

Posted by: tim at June 18, 2009 8:25 PM

brave brave Sir Bama
bravely swatted fly.
when a fly reared its ugly head.
Sir Bama swatted him and said.
"that was pretty impressive , I got the sucker"

narcissus even in the face of grave danger

slow news day.

Posted by: cal2 at June 18, 2009 8:50 PM

this is bigger news on CNN and CNBC than firing the inspector general. see why we hate the MSM so ?

Posted by: cal2 at June 18, 2009 8:53 PM

Man, someone give wallyj the star of the month. LOL. Good one.

And friggin' PETA... WHO CARES!?

Posted by: Mark Peters at June 18, 2009 8:56 PM

Me thinks peta has lost it's way. That's if they had one. They are a bunch of sick puppies. Loons would be more accurate.

Posted by: Ken E. at June 18, 2009 9:15 PM

Obama, Obama oh Barrack Obama. Killing flies now are we? What, has the act of destroying your own nation become old and boring? Moving on to smiting other species in your sick and twisted games?

As far as PETA goes, "They that is without insects on their windshield, let them first cast a stone at her".

Posted by: Joel Schroeder at June 18, 2009 9:16 PM

What can you say about these things? We have an "Appeasement First" president being lauded by the lapdog press about his housefly killing prowess and then we have PETA and all the craziness they bring with them.
I'm waiting for someone to jump out in front of the camera and say: "Ha! Ha! Joke's on you!"

Posted by: Osumashi Kinyobe at June 18, 2009 9:21 PM

Okay, this is I realise it's been at least 16 years since I was in pre-med but I do recall an invertebrate zoo class where we (for the umpteenth time) went over taxonomy. For those of you who have taken this (who hasn't in grade school?) you'll understand that at the most basic level - kingdoms - we break living organisms into three groups, amongst them Anamalia and Insecta. Doesn't take a Chicago mobster to figure those out, does it?

So my question, finally, is what do insects have to do with People for the Ethical Treatment of ANIMALS?

Just a thought...

love the freda the fish costume, lady lettuce costumes etc. listed in the expenditures.

most lefty protests include a couple of squirrels, a fish and a bunch of diesel dyke lesbos with their legs backcombed to hold up the woolen socks in their birkenstocks. plus aging hippies with squirrels living in their beards. standard protest dress with the che T-shirts

I saw the video of Obama and the fly.

The way that thing was buzzing around him, from now on I'm calling Obama,"Lord of the Flies".

Posted by: Mr.g at June 18, 2009 10:05 PM

So right! I'm sending an note to Joe Kernen on Squawk Box, asking him to stop fawning over Bambam.

I mean, the guy goes out for burgers, and everyone goes nuts. "He's so cool!", even though if you watch the video, you'll see the street is cordoned off, and people are held behind ropes, so the Bambam burgers inconvenienced a lot of people. Don't recall hearing any mention of that.

Bambam kills a fly, and it's all over CNN, CNBC, the Daily Show, Colbert - I don't watch NBC/CBS/ABC news, but I wouldn't be surprised if it showed up there too.

It's bad enough the fawning over his idiotic policy, erroneous speeches, and social gaffes - now they're practically licking his boots over the littlest things. Oh Lord, when it will end?

Posted by: KevinB at June 18, 2009 10:30 PM

You did see the story where PETA DOES heart Che Guevera, right? -

Posted by: msr at June 18, 2009 10:31 PM

And, in a related note, PETA is annoyed with a mother who fought a cougar to save her three-year-old daughter.

These people are beyond parody. They really are.

Posted by: Amy P. at June 18, 2009 11:27 PM

These whack jobs are master attention getters.

If they did not get press they would go away. Tell that to the press

Posted by: LEDA at June 18, 2009 11:42 PM

Why does the MSM keep reporting these jokers? That is the real issue.

Posted by: bob at June 18, 2009 11:49 PM

Flies do what they always do- they home in on manure. As for PETA, they made the news....that's all they really wanted.

Posted by: Snagglepuss at June 19, 2009 12:09 AM

Nice shot, I must admit. I used to shoot flies out of the air with elastic bands, but this is impressive.

Posted by: PiperPaul at June 19, 2009 12:50 AM

I wish a plauge of lice upon their hair. Oh the moral horror of figuring out"To kill or not to kill". That is the Question?

Posted by: Revnant Dream at June 19, 2009 1:19 AM

How many of you remember the movie "My Name is Nobody?" starring Terenece Hill and Henry Fonda as Jack Beauregard. Rember the flies in the river? Now that was in the day when men were men and flies were scared!

Posted by: Glen Ford at June 19, 2009 1:39 AM

Ohbummer is the executive. He's supposed to execute things. Including flies. So he was doing his job. Who cares what People Eating Tasty Animals thinks?

"Animal rights" is one of the easiest loony-left canards to debunk. If animals had rights, every time a lion killed a zebra or wildebeest, it would have to be dragged into a court and charged with murder, which is obviously ridiculous. Therefore, animals don't have rights. And you can't argue "but they're a different species" because under the AR special political correctness rules that would be "species-ist"!

Last night, I saw a fly on my windowsill. Thinking to emulate the GREAT O, I smacked it with my hand and, blow me away, I killed it.

What prize do I get? Who's going to laud my prowess?

Nothing? No one?

'Thought so.

'Good thing PETA doesn't know who I am.

in what seems like a hundred years ago now, in the construction site trailer , we used to catch flies , shake them up and throw them on the floor to kill them. a person could probably kill a few hundred a day. then sweep the floor. you had to shake them up to disorientate them or they would recover out of their forced dive when you threw them at the floor. and the trick to catching them ? aim about 2 inches above them when they land and pick them out of the air as they take off.

my youngest son can grab them out of the air with two fingers anytime anywhere. something Ive never mastered.

no MSM coverage please

All I know is nothing attracts flies faster than something rotten.
