If you asked a global warming zealot about the cause of this, they would say it was global warming.

Seriously, the proof is in the pudding. Or is it the ice cream?
Posted by: Jack frosst at June 10, 2009 12:39 PMWhat an amazing substance CO2 is.
Put it in the air and it causes warming.
Keep it in the air and it causes cooling.
I demand scientific proof to demonstate at what point in the earth's history the climate did NOT change.
The Hudson Bay Company kept meticulous weather data for more than a couple of hundred years. Research the data and you will see a pattern - some warmer decades and then some colder decades and then some war....
Or, easier, just read
'Eighteenth Century Naturalists Of Hudsons Bay' by Tim Ball et al.
Written during the height of the global warming hoax (about 2003) they, and many others, foresaw and predicted the coming cooling trend that did in fact start about 1998.
Ever see any of this on CBC? Ever see Suzuki fear-mongering? Gore?
Posted by: ron in kelowna at June 10, 2009 12:45 PMDuring the 60s and 70s, most springs in Canada were late, cold and the growing seasons short.
During the winter of 1980 it was as if someone flipped a switch. During the 80s and 90s, most springs were warm and early and growing seasons long.
HBC wx data shows similar decadal trends - for centuries!
So why is it surprising that the 00s are now cooler ?
Especially surprised, panicked even, are the legions of Gore disciples who see the BIG SUCKER in the mirror.
Posted by: ron in kelowna at June 10, 2009 12:54 PMPS: I was an Environment Canada weather recorder (1990-92) for two years. I had a Stevenson Screen; our thermometers were Taylor--they had been calibrated in a lab. The screen had to be 50 feet away from any building or structure. If that structure was over 12 feet high, we had to move the screen away from the building the same distance as the excess height. Thus if a 24 foot high structure was near the screen, we had to stay 74 feet away. The screen was four feet above a nealty cut grassed in area. All screens--all thermometers were the same in Canada and the USA.
Today they have a mix of equipment that would baffle you brain. Radio stations, TV stations, airports and other agencies all use various thermonters, rain guages, anonometers etc.
I won't argue that the trend in W. Canada has been towards cold weather lately. However the environmentalists need to get their act together.
And by the way Mr. Dion--you were wrong!
Yep, the frost killed my neighbours tomatoes.
The scary thing is, for the last 2 years running, the frost came back on August 10th.
Those poor food crops out there could sure use a boost - from higher CO2 conc levels. Same as greenhouse operators - three times our atmospheric levels of that essential, odorless, invisible and harmless gas. You know, the one the Hippies at the EPA declared a toxic substance.
Posted by: ron in kelowna at June 10, 2009 1:02 PMKate, you clearly missed the memo.
It's no longer GLOBAL WARMING because, you know, the consistent cooling trend over the past few years was noticed even by us peons and Al Gore could no longer fool us.
So now it's "global climate change", which covers all manner of any variance in temperature.
I'm of the opinion that when the earth's climate doesn't fluctuate, then I'm going to start worrying.
Posted by: Amy P. at June 10, 2009 1:03 PMTried planting tomatoes, epic fail on that one. Who knew you had to wait till August for there to be no danger of frost?

"But when some space scientists compared notes recently, they discovered something startling:
“We said, ‘Oh my goodness — what we’ve been telling people about the magnetic shield is not correct.’”
And so what we thought to be true about our atmosphere, isn’t."
"Another scientific consensus bites the dust

It has been said that “the science is settled” regarding what we know about Earth’s atmosphere and climate. But recently scientists discovered that something we had accepted as a basic truth for a very long time is not true at all. One of the “basic truths” we all learned is that Earth’s atmosphere is “protected” from the solar wind by its magnetic field, unlike Mars which has lost most of its atmosphere due to the solar wind."

"Canada frosts the most widespread in recent memory"
"In Manitoba, the frost is the worst in memory for its frequency and area covered, said Derwyn Hammond, the province's senior agronomy specialist for the Canola Council.
"Certainly (it's) the worst year I've seen," said Hammond, who has worked for the Canola Council for 15 years."

Drowning Polar bears and melting Arctic/Antarctic Icecaps, anyone? :-)
And from The Goode Family thread, that wonderful quote from the Comrade Journalist at Pravda-on-Hudson, AKA the New York Times: "...as if it had been incubated in the early to mid-'90s, when it was possible to find global-warming skeptics among even the reasonable and informed." Yes, Comrade Journalist, the Solar System revolves around the New York Times, not the sun. :-)

Posted by: Dave in Pa at June 10, 2009 1:45 PMChris St. Clair at the Weather Network told me!! Don't confuse Weather with Climate!! Extreme weather is a result of man-made climate change! Dr. Suzuki told me so too. Must be true? Except I'm a dinosaur.....frakkin' morons! Cherry pickin' season is a couple of weeks late because of our cool spring here in the Okanagan...
Posted by: Dan Gusztak at June 10, 2009 2:11 PMYou're right, Amy P. Change the name of the current crisis. It's not "global warming"; it's "climate change".
It's not "cutting someone off in traffic"; it's "instantaneous course correction".
Crises, like cars, must be sold.
Osumashi;
Thank you, There's a 200 page Al Gore book, in your few words.
Maybe a movie if Brangelina get onboard.
Posted by: Arron D at June 10, 2009 3:00 PMA wise guy from Suzuki’s organization said that what ever the weather, the cause is AWG.
This is quite unbelievable, so it is understandably thought of as a made up story, it is an actual statement of the wise guy.
So there you have it, AWG it is, what ever.
Thank you, Arron.
This fear-mongering nonsense has made quite the tidy profit for some. But how would a "green movie" go (not the Hulk)? Car chases that would stop because the hybrids or electric cars are out of juice. The Roman Catholic Church, in collusion with the saucer people, are melting icebergs in order to hide secret "bibles" which claim Jesus is really living in Miami and only Fidel Castro can help the heroes (as played by Brangelina or some other Hollywood power couple). Insert own pig crap here. I'm sure it would sell and get lots of Oscars no matter how appalling it may be.
Seriously, the proof is in the pudding. Or is it the ice cream?
No, Jack frosst; it's in the kool-aid

Ahh, SYF, that's how the debate should go. The ecomaniacs should offer irrefutable evidence that man is causing global warming. But that's not how it works. The whacko environmental militants lie about data, provide half-truths here and there, and then squelch debate by proclaiming "the science is settled", and march on with their marxist agenda. The burden of proof is on the rest of us to prove the green morons have it wrong, and that's completely backwards. Want to drive any of them nuts? Ask this:
Even IF they aren't fudging the data, silencing meaningful scientific (not political) debate about the theory of AGW, and relying on useless computer models... why would we bankrupt our economy when we're less than 2 or 3% of the world's CO2 emissions, and this allows china/india/russia to emit orders of magnitude more CO2 to the "detriment" of the earth?
I hope I live to see the day when the likes of bottom-feeding slime like suzuki and gore are held to account for their lies and manipulation, but I'm not holding my breath. Nobody holds envirowhackos to account for their fearmongering; Paul Erlich is certainly one example, and Rachel Carson is another.

And here I thought that for a theory to be valid, there had to be some mechanism to prove it false, even though it might be true. Or as Wiki says: "Falsifiability (or refutability) is the logical possibility that an assertion can be shown false by an observation or a physical experiment. That something is "falsifiable" does not mean it is false; rather, that if it is false, then this can be shown by observation or experiment."
If there is nothing at all that could conceivably show AGW to be false, then it isn't a theory; maybe a religion, maybe a scam but certainly not a theory.
Posted by: Kathryn at June 10, 2009 4:12 PMSo you think we have a frost problem?
Good thing we are not living in Antarctica.
CO2 Condensation in Antarctica
How cold is it in Antarctica? According to Weather Underground, Vostok, Antarctica is forecast to reach -113F on Friday. That is four degrees below the freezing point of CO2 and would cause dry (CO2) ice to freeze directly out of the air.

You've almost got it, Kathryn. The climate-porn accolytes would call it a "certainty" or "fact". The less-possessed amongst them would call it "scientific consensus".
These distinctions are important when dealing with the enviro kool-aid drinkers.

Posted by: mhb at June 10, 2009 4:56 PMmhb, Sir Karl Popper would be proud of you. The AGW crowd has been presented with evidence to falsify their hypothesis, so they try to save their hypothesis by climate-changing the channel.
Popper would call their practice "pseudo-science". He said the same about the Marxists and the Freudians.

Jack,
The AGW digital wizards lack a basic understanding of the problems in thier data acquisition. They are looking at Complex Analog Signals involving A/D (analog to digital conversion) that suffer from phase accuracy & noise.
It’s like zooming a camera "in" on a dancing bear's left testical, and then using that image to accurately describe a three-ring circus.
I would hazard the opinion that forecasting "local weather" is actually fairly simple, and doesn't involve a dynamic real-time Model.
