Just say the word...

...and thy will be done:

Obama's belief in dialogue, in the winning power of friendly humility, will be tested not by the reaction to his speeches, but by the success or failure of his smiling overtures to those now hostile to our country. The results so far: Osama bin Laden has denounced him, Kim Jong-Il has mocked him by launching rockets and rattling his centrifuge, Mahmoud Ahmadinijad has defied him, and European leaders have refused his requests for more NATO troops and centrally planned economic stimulus programs.
(....)
To believe that these and other such initiatives will succeed, one has to believe that other nations and peoples are motivated primarily by a desire to get along with others, and not a desire to acquire more power, land, prestige, or influence. One has to believe that the desire for power and status stems not from human nature, but from outside factors -- such as a misplaced fear of American intentions, or a misunderstanding of a rival's point of view. Fix the outside causes of their hostility, and people will revert to their natural, peaceful state.

Got peace if you want it, eh?

I think the basic cause of dislike of the US is simply envy. The US spends more on entertainment than most countries can spend to fix real problems. There are no food shortages or shortages of anything. Gas costs more big deal..you have a car. I am sure a lot of countries feel if the US lowered their standard of living they could solve their countries problems. They never question why they would or why they would pick their problems to solve.

Posted by: Speedy at June 9, 2009 11:41 AM

IMO dislike of the US is fueled by the governments of those countries. If it was not the case, the people's anger would be directed at the governments for being corrupt, not spending money on basic needs etc. That anger has to be directed somewhere, and the US is the best target. At least that's how it was in the USSR. There is virtually no leader in the world who would say something along the lines of 'people, constantly look at the US for an example of how hard work brings results'. Instead they usually blame the US for not providing enough free weapons.

*"The Real World
How Corrupt Is the United Nations?
By Claudia Rosett ,
Tuesday, April 4, 2006

Recent years have brought a cascade of scandals at the United Nations, of which the wholesale corruption of the Oil-for-Food relief program in Iraq has been only the most visible. We still do not know the full extent of these debacles–the more sensational ones include the disappearance of UN funds earmarked for tsunami relief in Indonesia and the exposure of a transnational network of pedophiliac rape by UN peacekeepers in Africa–and we may never know. What we do know is that an assortment of noble-sounding efforts has devolved into enterprises marked chiefly by abuse, self-dealing, and worse.

Seen by many, including many Americans, as the chief arbiter of legitimacy in global politics, the UN is understood by others to be the only institution standing between us and global anarchy. If that is so, the portents are not promising. The free world is grappling with threats from the spread of radical Islam to North Korea's nuclear blackmail and Iran's pursuit of nuclear bombs. The UN, despite its trophy case of Nobel prizes, has failed so far to curb any of these, just as it failed abysmally to run an honest or effective sanctions program in Saddam Hussein's Iraq. Currently it is gridlocked over matters as seemingly straightforward as cleaning up its own management department.

In the effort to address the UN's manifold problems, there have been audits, investigations, committees, reports, congressional hearings, action plans, and even a handful of arrests by U.S. federal prosecutors. There have been calls for Secretary-General Kofi Annan to step down before his second term expires at the end of this year. Solutions have been sought by way of better monitoring, whistleblower protection, the accretion of new oversight bodies, and another round of conditions attached to the payment of U.S. dues. On top of the broad reforms of the early 1990's, the sweeping reforms of 1997, the further reforms of 2002, and the world summit for reform in 2005, still more plans for reform are in the works.1 To its external auditors, internal auditors, joint inspections unit, eminent-persons panels, executive boards, and many special consultants, the UN has recently added an Office of Ethics–now expected to introduce in May what will presumably become an annual event: "UN Ethics Day."

Is any of this likely to help? Behind the specific scandals lies what one of the UN's own internal auditors has termed a "culture of impunity.""

Obama may be black, wearing a suit and tie, have short hair and give speeches under Roman columns instead of from a bed in some hotel in Montreal but he has the same childish naivete John Lennon had.

Those people believe if sheeps could be just a bit nicer, wolves would stop eating them and they would all live in peace.

Sheeps just don't want peace enough.

Blame the sheeps.

Wolves are victims.

A desire to acquire more power, prestige, and influence are why Obama is President today.
All Zero has to do is act as though others are driven by the same motives as himself.

Friendly humility is just a pose on Obama's part.

When Zero finally gets to the point where he has to achieve something with his "smart" negotiations, he is going to find that negotiating from a position of strength will get him what he wants and perceived weakness on Zero's part will get him intransigence on the other party's side.

I wonder, where was that "friendly humility" when he closed the borders to so many Canadian imports?

Posted by: Oz at June 9, 2009 12:05 PM

Even Chavez is mocking Obama.

"Hey, Obama has just nationalized nothing more and nothing less than General Motors. Comrade Obama! Fidel, careful or we are going to end up to his right," Reuters quotes Chavez joking on a national TV broadcast.

Posted by: Kathryn at June 9, 2009 12:05 PM

Zero doesn't need "friendly humility" with us because it is "UN CANADIAN" to protest too much. This will be obvious when Canada politely drinks "O's"Cap and Trade kool aid.

"I think the basic cause of dislike of the US is simply envy"

I don't think so. I think it is because US Foreign policy and free speech undermine elites around the world, and elites can fight back through manipulation of opinion. European elites are included in this assessment. No govt really wants open democracy once they are in power. Govts want to make back room deals to help their nationals. Govts want to extort huge bribes and other govts want to pay them. The US is seen as a naive monster which has power to disrupt these arrangements.

WASHINGTON : Former US vice president Al Gore was "held back" from travelling to North Korea to negotiate for the release of his two employees - journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee.

That is according to Selig Harrison from the Centre for International Policy, who said Gore sought diplomatic backing from the Obama administration in a private meeting on May 11.

Ling and Lee have just been sentenced to 12 years in North Korean labour camp.

Neither Al Gore nor the company he founded, Current TV, have made any public comments, since the two journalists were captured whilst on a reporting assignment in March."

Obama is handing his country and its interests over to the rest of the world. He will hurt his own countrymen and others in the process. Where will the world go when it needs help? Not the flaw-laden and weakened US. How do we trade with our neighbour?
Thanks, Obama. I found this knife in my back. Is it yours?

"Obama believes he can make foreigners like the United States by speaking softly and humbly while he continues, virtually unchanged, the same policies as his predecessor."

Exactly, it appears that BO is depending on the worldwide media to mislead the public as the MSM does in the west.
This article echos my thoughts from last week:

If you can take BO's motives at face value, you can see how he's trying to build bridges. That being said, even if he's successful changing the general perception of America by Muslims, what will the tangible benefits be?

I believe BO is under the misconception(taking his motives at face value) that goodwill from Muslims will translate into peaceful relations with terrorists. What he doesn't seem to grasp is these terrorist groups operate outside of the law, and are not accountable to the public. Furthermore, he doesn't seem to grasp that being a terrorist is a good paying job and no amount of pandering is going to make someone give that up. Terrorists are in the business of making terror!

These oversights are obvious to most onlookers, including BO. Personally I don't take BO at face value, I believe his defense strategy is to appease Muslim extremists with rhetoric in hopes of diverting their attention away from America, instead of facing this enemy head-on. This is not consistent with American values, nor the American public’s POV.JMO

This is a brilliant article. The One should read it, laminate it, and put it on his fridge.

Apparently Dear Leader, in addtion to threatening nuclear war, is getting ramped up to fire his Dong again. Ahmadinnerjacket's centrifuges are busily spinning out U235. Islamic fascists threaten to tip over Pakistan's government and large chunk of North Africa.

There's a lot of balls in the air for The One. Hopefully The One's inner Chamberlain, now in full bloom, will give way to his inner Churchill.

I still believe when the American public shows its distain for Obama and the MSM picks up on it, it will be because of Michelle, not him.

There will be a "Let them eat cake", moment for the simple reason she is capable of it. She is the loose cannon, but for the moment she is docile either because she is still in the afterglow of being the First Lady and everything is going to plan, or she is somewhat kept quiet.

Right now, he is "cool", but that coolness can be turned into a loathing when the coolness shows its contempt for the admirers.

Only thing I would add to that tim in vermont is, just because the State-Run US Media thinks they have the American People fooled on the Democrats Messiah they don't by far have the Europeans, or Asians, or Russians, or any other country outside of America fooled.

FTA: One has to believe that the desire for power and status stems not from human nature, but from outside factors .

Then how does that explain the Liberal Socialist Democrat Party ?

Posted by: glasnost at June 9, 2009 3:04 PM

EBD, why would you inflict 10 minutes of John Lennon on anyone?

Posted by: glasnost at June 9, 2009 3:06 PM

I don't think that Obama believes, in the sense of having thought through a policy, that 'speaking softly' to Islamic fascists or any others, will make these people like him or America.

I think that his ONLY mode of existence and interaction with anyone - is to verbally charm them. As I've said, he long ago moved himself out of reality and into a Text that he himself Authors. His interactions with people are 'textual' or rhetorical. He only allows people into this Obama Text if he can, by his words, control them. If he can't, he'll denigrate, insult and even harm them; or, he'll totally and that is totally, ignore them.

Obama is interacting with the world in the only way he knows how - his verbal interactions are to see if they are 'hooked' by his words, and thus, under his control. If they are not 'hookable', he'll insult them (the UK PM, Sarkozy, Limbaugh, Hannity) or ignore them (the Tea Parties).

The fact that the world is ignoring Obama's rhetoric is, in a way, lost to Obama. He ignores nations and people who are not 'hooked' by his rhetoric. They cease to exist.

By the way, his approval ratings are now back to plus 8, but, Rasmussen is also pointing out that for the first time in two years, the electorate trusts the Republicans more than the Democrats in economic issues, 45 to 39.

And, Republicans lead on national security, 51 to 36. And also on ethics, and immigration issues, taxes. The Democrats lead on health care but have dropped from an 18 point lead over a month ago, and also on education.

So, I'd say that a gentle swing is on its way. Obama is new, novel and steeped in Chicago corruption but 'his' Democratic party is losing ground.

If he is right, amazing accomplishments await. If he is wrong, reality awaits instead.

Isn't that the quintessential leftie dilemma; amazing accomplishments VS reality.

I agree with ET, in Obama’s case it’s doubtful that he intends amazing accomplishments that benefit his Country rather than himself. He’s just a delusional N---------*

Obama's foreign policy: "Walk softly, and carry a big shtick."

Posted by: tim in vermont at June 9, 2009 3:27 PM

Just thinking outloud...

Is it possible that all of this rhetoric is for the benefit of Americans back home?

It seems likely that Obama doesn't believe his Kumbya strategy will accomplish anything outside of N.America; but, perhaps this hopey changey rhetoric can mislead an already ignorant American public into thinking progress is being made, or that America’s tactics have changed when they haven’t. After all, Americans believed that GWB is responsible for the market bust, so why can't they believe that "humility" is working? GWB's winning strategy with BO's superior marketing(window dressing) and everyone is happy.

Mr Obama ignored the fact that what he calls the "Muslim world" consists of 57 countries with Muslim majorities and a further 60 countries – including America and Europe – where Muslims represent substantial minorities. Trying to press a fifth of humanity into a single "ghetto" based on their religion is an exercise worthy of ideologues, not the leader of a major democracy.

With regard to Obama's 'hoping' that his Charm Strategy will work in foreign affairs, I don't think that he 'thinks through' his strategy.

My view is that Obama can only function in one way - the Charmer Manipulator. That's all he can do. His agenda is to charm you into his control. If he can't accomplish this by the Charm Manipulation, then, he's denigrate and insult you. OR - he'll totally, utterly, ignore you.

So, Obama will simply ignore foreign nations that go 'rogue' and aren't charmed by him. For example, he'll talk but in actual actions, he'll ignore Iran's nuclear weapons agenda.

How much money is being wasted on Michelle's little London and Paris walkabouts"?

How are they going to pay for these things when the new Pay Czar starts forcing down the earnings of Americans?
