Reader Tips

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Now that we're starting our second year of SDA LNR officially hosting Reader Tips, I'm going to try changing the format of SDA LNR slightly, in that rather than have a seven-day cycling "topic" schedule, for now we are going to experiment for a while with (a) a few days in a row on the same topic, and (b) random jumps to different topics. In part this is because variety is the spice of life, and in part it's because our wholesale resources here in the studio have become better aligned to this new approach, whereas a year ago they were better aligned to the cyclical schedule. Needless to say, DJ EBD's Wednesday night SDA LNR show is independent of this DJ Vitruvius plan for the other days of the week.

Anyway, building on last night's show and rule [a] supra, tonight, for your delectation, and in honour of SDA LNR listener Hello Birdy's appreciation of Jewish humour in last night's comments, here are two shows by C. Israel Lutsky, who performed as the Yiddisha Philosopher from 1931 to the mid-'60s. Lutsky took to the air daily with letters from listeners seeking advice. He replied with spoonfuls of folk wisdom and dollops of abuse. Firstly, from station WEBR, Miami, Florida, we have his essay, in English, On Jewish Humor, and secondly, from his classic series of A Letter To the Yiddisha Philosopher "advice columns", on station WEBD in New York, this one in Yiddish with English subtitles, The Boy Should Be Told. That last one is really the best (the antecedents are to provide context), so if you only have time to listen to Israel once, listen to that last one.

Update: A number of listeners are reporting that they are unable to tune in to the streaming audio formats used in tonight's broadcast. I do apologize, and I'm a little sad too, because this means I won't be able to use the Yiddish Radio Project, with its excellent Yid-O-Matic Yiddish to English translator, in future shows. Oh well, for those of you with radios that have been able to receive tonight's transmissions, you may want to explore the other fine offerings that are available at the Yiddish Radio Project outside of the scope of SDA LNR.

Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

This is a source you hardly hear from anymore. An interesting take on America from the Bears point of view. Like most posts on articles I make its just a point of view. Not mine necessarily.Adults make thier own minds up in my opinion. This is a fun one.

American capitalism gone with a whimper
It must be said, that like the breaking of a great dam, the American decent into Marxism is happening with breath taking speed, against the back drop of a passive, hapless sheeple, excuse me dear reader, I meant people.

True, the situation has been well prepared on and off for the past century, especially the past twenty years. The initial testing grounds was conducted upon our Holy Russia and a bloody test it was. But we Russians would not just roll over and give up our freedoms and our souls, no matter how much money Wall Street poured into the fists of the Marxists.

The above link points to a chart showing how the US Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. APAN'S increasingly frantic efforts to lead the world in green technology have put it on a collision course with the ambitions of China and dragged both government and industry into the murky realm of large-scale mineral smuggling.

The robust international trade in illegally mined, quota-busting rare-earth metals highlights China's near monopoly on the raw materials for environmental technology - a 95 per cent dominance of world supply that is likely to become more widely noticed as China tightens its grip.

Maz et al,

I think there's more to this latest Alexander Panetta story than meets the eye. A couple of points:

1. I listened to most of the 2 hours of Rex Murphy's Cross Country Checkup on CBC Radio 1 today. He was asking for whether people supported the GG or not. Everyone but one person was an adamant supporter of Mme. Jean. And keep in mind who their core audience is: Left and Further Left. I was shocked, in a good way, by the tremendous support for her.

2. On the same show more than a few people suggested that this was a media contrived story. What precisely they meant by this, I do not know, but at the very least one could construe that the story was slanted unfairly.

3. I just read Alexander Panetta's latest story on the same, the one that you referred to earlier. The headline reads, "Clarkson unimpressed with Jean's seal-eating", which was extracted from the first paragraph: "At least one person's unimpressed by all the fuss over the seal-skinning adventures of Michaelle Jean: her predecessor as Governor General."

The word "unimpressed" has several meanings but when presented without any further explanation, most reasonable people would conclude that Adrienne Clarkson was "not impressed" or "not approving" of it. Yet read the story all the way through, and that's NOT AT ALL what she said or meant.

4. I assume that this Alexander Panetta is the same one with whom Kate got in a fight with a few years ago? If so, it seems that Panetta's tradition of highly biased, inaccurate reporting continues.

Sad. And pathetic.

Don't know why we're worried about Sotomayor in the US. Here, the Supreme Court of Canada voted 5/2 that it is not too serious for a 58 year old woman from North Van, who made $100.000 per with her in-house grow op. They didn't make her pay the same in fines, and said she shouldn't lose her house
as "proceeds of crime". Hell, I'm not even sure that she'll have a criminal record. As usual, the paper failed to report which judges disagreed.

The Conservatives are getting heat from the Libranos for running a $50 billion deficit. Is it not time that we demand Harper slash the budget in order to bring the deficit down. He should start by selling the CBC and then....?

tomax7 re: rare earth minerals
It's been reported that significant quantities of rare-earth minerals have been discovered in northern Saskatchewan over the last couple of years, and feasibility studies are underway to look at the prospects of developing these mining properties. It is a well known fact that China is the world's main producer and as such has a virtual momopoly on these rare-earth minerals, and thus an alternate supply would hold great value.

MORE CBC HYPOCRISY!

Today (May 31-09) a well know Kansas doctor was shot by a 51 year old assailant.

Dr. George Tiller was a provider of late term abortions. He was shot while serving as an usher at a church in Kansas. he had previous been shot by extremists.

My comment on CBC.CA was: "What do call the crime where a murderer shoots another murdurer. I call it justice!"

Needless to say my comment wasn't published. Yet all "pro-abortionists had their comments published!! Your Canadian federal tax dollars at work!!

Is Your Cleaning Lady a Rootless Cosmopolitan*?

The question was recently asked here: Is Iggy a cosmopolitan*?

Gagnon says yes, Iggy is a cosmopolitan; but, is Iggy a rootless cosmopolitan? Yes.

The previous Liberal leader, Citoyen Dion, was also a rootless cosmopolitan.

Liberals love rootless cosmopolitans.

Rcs are "citizens of the world".

You are a parochial with your gut-hatred of cosmopolitans.

Do you "viscerally resent" Iggy the "worldly" cosmopolitan?

Gagnon knows: >>>> "My cleaning lady bought a house in her native village in Portugal. When she goes there for holidays, she feels somewhat resented by childhood friends."
...-

Lysiane Gagnon:
"Tory ads play on parochial spite

Many people viscerally resent those who are cosmopolitan and worldly"

...-

*Rootless cosmopolitanism may describe my experience of Jewishness, but its hardly exclusive to Jews:

It applies equally to most of the people I love and respect from every corner of the planet who see themselves as citizens of the world, their identities defined by multiple affinities formed in their movement through the spaces between cultures, their instincts including a disdain for racism and cultural (and geopolitical) arrogance, and a tendency to understand and respond to events through a global prism, rather than via the ties of blood and soil. Whether they were raised Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist or atheist; whether their origins are Jewish, Indian, English, Scottish, Irish, German, Chilean, Persian, Basque, Israeli, Palestinian, Australian, Serb, Libyan, Midwestern or what have you, they are always most at home among people of similar heart and spirit."

Melanie Phillips, The Modern Heresy of True Science

Every so often, a book is published which, it is instantly clear, is the definitive last word on the subject. Such a book has just appeared on the global lunacy of anthropogenic global warming (AGW). In his devastating study Heaven and Earth. Global Warming: The Missing Science (Quartet) Ian Plimer, Professor of Mining Geology at the University of Adelaide and previously Professor of Earth Sciences at the Universities of Melbourne and, in the UK, Newcastle systematically shreds the theory and the hallucinatory propaganda industry it has spawned. There is simply nothing left of it when he has finished – and he does so from the perspective of real science which the theory has so shockingly betrayed.

Having painstakingly out the actual scientific facts and evidence involved in the study of climate, he concludes his book with a sustained peroration of fury and contempt at the way such scientific evidence has been dismissed in a breathtaking campaign of ‘cognitive dissonance’. As he says, there is not one shred of actual scientific evidence to sustain the claim of AGW, which rests in its entirety upon charlatanry, fraud, ignorance and ideology...

Horny Toad and anslem, my comment about Jack Frosst's comment was *not* about which side of the abortion debate he or anyone else is on. It's just that anyone who posts a comment at Kate's -- or anywhere else -- that openly advocates or cheers on the murder of abortion doctors or clinic staff has a few disconnected wires.

And, as if more evidence is needed, he complained that the CBC didn't let his comment through because he is pro-life. That's like someone attempting to post a comment openly advocating for the murder of Liberal functionaries, and then complaining, "needless to say, my comment wasn't published. Yet all pro-Liberals had their comments published!! Your Canadian federal tax dollars at work!!"

Either Mongo isn't very good at connecting the dots or he's murderously, excitedly, opportunistically disingenuous. People like him do seriously damage to the pro-life cause.

"Why is he a moron?"

I don't know -- his umbilical cord was knotted around his neck during gestation?

Posted by: EBD at June 1, 2009 12:18 PM

Regarding the heinous murdering of an abortion doctor, the part that bothers me about the comments on the G&M and CBC is that, despite the representative of the pro-life group denouncing the act, the pile-on has begun and the moonbats are saying that Christians are murderers. Now, had the act not been denounced, they could have pointed to the deafening silence (like the usual deafening silence after honour killings) but that wasn't the case. It was just an opportunity for them to spew their anti-Christian bigotry. As a Christian, I take tremendous offense to that and will call them on it every time.

I worked in a newspaper many years ago. We never predicted the outcome of a federal election without a 5% lead. The normal margin of error is 2%!

“GDP data shows Canada over worst of crisis - PM

OTTAWA, June 1 (Reuters) - Although Canada’s latest gross domestic product figures are bad, they were better than expected and show the economy is over the worst of the crisis, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said on Monday.

Statistics Canada said the economy shrank by 5.4 percent in the first quarter of the year. The decline was not as bad as the 6.6 percent drop expected by analysts.

“We do anticipate that this was the worst quarter, the first quarter of this year … The worst is behind us, we will have better quarters going forward. That’s our very strong sense at this point,” Harper told Toronto radio station CFRB.

Saying there was “reason for optimism”, Harper cautioned there would be further job losses and said Ottawa was ready to take more steps if necessary to help the unemployed.

Opposition parties are demanding Ottawa make it easier for the jobless to claim benefits and some legislators have mused about defeating the Conservative government over the issue, although an election any time soon seems unlikely.

“The country needs an election like a hole in the end. Nobody wants an election. It is not good. It is not in the interests of the country at a time where our economy is so challenged,” said Harper.”

"The Plan for Government-Funded Socialist Media
Accuracy In Media ^ | JUNE 1, 2009 | CLIFF KINCAID

Forty years ago Reed Irvine started Accuracy in Media because he understood that the media were trying to undermine the war effort in Vietnam. Later, he formed Accuracy in Academia, realizing that the seeds of the media problem rested in the colleges and universities.

Reed gave me my first job out of college, in 1978, after I had completed an internship at Stan Evans' National Journalism Center.

Back in the 1970s, I learned what journalism was all about when I studied from Curtis MacDougall's classic textbook, Interpretative Reporting. I understood then that a massive shift had taken place from objective news reporting to interpretative and advocacy journalism. Curtis MacDougall and his textbook trained several generations of journalists, and we are seeing the results

MacDougall taught at Northwestern University, where he was a journalism educator and political activist. He ran on the Communist-controlled Progressive Party ticket. His son, Kent, also a journalist, came out as a Marxist, after working at the Los Angeles Times and Wall Street Journal, and he then became a professor at the University of California at Berkeley."
