Posted by: Slim at May 29, 2009 12:19 AM

I don't see what the goofy french not inviting the Queen of Canada and various lesser States, to the D-Day celebrations has to do with the equaly goofy Obama White House. However on our Queen, I seem to recall one of the Labour PMs in Britian commenting that she had been born 300yrs to late. That she was truly a QUEEN in every sense and not a figure head.

There's something so 'white bread' about smoking a Bob Marley mini-refer wearing a low rent fedora and a crisp Arrow dress shirt. Oh, but he rolled up his shirt sleeves and is wearing blue jeans for that 'edgy' look. I'm sure he was trying to look all casual and laid back, but these photos have an obvious staged feel to them.

He was a phoney back then too.

Actually with that fro' he was sporting back then, he kind of looks like a young Lionel Jefferson.

Posted by: Eskimo at May 29, 2009 12:59 AM

It's all about class. I just find the new normal so classless.

And, God save our Queen, she is a pretty decent person who has sacrificed a lot in her life for a bigger cause

An old Vet related a story concerning the Queen while in Her Driver Mechanic capacity. (He was in England awaiting disembarkation to France.) Apparently She was a bit too bold in Her driving on occasion. The word got up to High Command and the King was consulted. He told them to treat Her as they would anyone else. No favor. I think, the story goes, that She lost some pay.

Ok, fred I will type slowly so you will be able to keep up (ah ah fred, I see your lips moving!!).

In the top photograph you see a great and noble lady who has given her entire life to a greater purpose, when her personal wealth and position could have easily allowed her to chose the easy life.

In the bottom photographs we see a narcissist.

See the difference? Hense the term "juxtapose".

Just reading a legal thriller by Scott Turow (pretty good by the way) Laws of Our Fathers which has a lot of background on the lady judge and her friends who were all leftist radicals in the 60's. I can't tell you the number of novels and films I have seen where this is done to show that the subjects are 'good guys' or gals and their hearts were in the right place despite the present yuppie positions of power.

Even Harold Wilson, that hardened Labour PM, admired the Queen. It took him a little while, but when he figured it out -- that she knew her stuff better and worked harder and longer than either him or any other MP -- he was in awe.

As for The Obama? Hmmm. I'd love to have heard the Windsor's after-the-guests-leave chat after their dinner and gift-exchange with the Obamas. She probably thought she'd seen it all ... and then along came BoBo and Shelley.

Did any of you nay-sayers read the Ace HQ post at all?

Sarkozy and Obama, neither of whom have served, have not invited Queen Elizabeth, who did serve in WWII, to the 65th anniversary of the D-Day landings at Normandy. This, in addition to the fact that she's the Head of State for Britain, which commanded and conquered two beaches on D-Day.

It's just wrong.

We are going to have to get used to the trolls folks. The G&M requires log-in now and some of the simple have trouble figuring it out. Not as much fun as it used to be and not as easy to start a flame war. Makes me feel superior though so not all bad. The Queen is better informed than most heads of state. British PMs are amazed when they brief the Queen that her info is as good or better than theirs. I could never spend my life with her schedule or amount of boring crap she endures with dignity.

Paul,

Since you seem unclear, please let me explain this story. Sarkozy and Obama, heads of state of their respective countries, will be commemorating the 65th anniversary of D-Day. Because neither had been born, they weren't around during WWII. OTOH, Queen Elizabeth, head of state, was not only around during WWII, she was in uniform; however, she has not been invited.

Are you seeing a trend here? Elizabeth, Sarkozy and Obama - heads of state; GWB - private citizen and therefore is not germane to the conversation, no matter how many silly photographs of him exist.

Posted by: Kathryn at May 29, 2009 10:15 AM

The leader of France at the D Day invasion, now thats interesting.France was an an enemy power after their defeat in WWII.They did NOTHING to aid in that invasion.Maybe they should invite the Germans also.Britain and the rest of the commonwealth lost thousands of casualties in the invasion to liberate France and many more to defeat Germany.France stood by and watched.

There have been countless WW2 memorials / anniverseries where the President has NOT met with or invited the Queen of England. It's just grasping at straws to suggest that Obama taking some casual silly pictures while he was a "private citizen" has Eff all to do with anything.

Posted by: bluetech at May 29, 2009 10:47 AM

ET,

I always enjoy reading your posts because of the way you use the empirical method. Your conclusions often resonate with me.

The one fault I find with the empirical method is that experiment and observation are continually being refined. There was a time that the best observers in the world came to the conclusion the earth was flat.

I don't reject searching for information; I just relaize it's a moving target. I prefer to take aim after I've calculated velocity and trajectory.

Doug, Do you have anger management issues?

Posted by: glasnost at May 29, 2009 11:12 AM

Paul - D-Day, which was based in England, is not similar to 'countless WWII memorials or anniversaries'. That's because it was based in England. Got it? a D-Day Memorial therefore requires, and I mean that word, the presence of the English head of state.

not stirred - the fact that the empirical method works by 'refining' observed data is not a fault but its strength. It is only dogma that asserts that it has arrived at the Pure Final Complete Truth.

The empirical method asserts that the data base may change based on the technological skill of the observation, on the number of observed instances, and on the capacity of the hypothesis to explain those observations.

This means that one's conclusion is open to change...based on those observations and on the explanatory capacity of the hypothesis. Both data and hypothesis can change. Dogma or ungrounded opinions reject both data and hypothetical changes.

You can still find shotgun shells just about anywhere. I even found a stainless steel potato gun that worked off of hairspray, I kid you not. If it is still there this weekend will try and snag some pics.

"SPIEGEL INTERVIEW WITH OBAMA'S GREAT-UNCLE(sic)"

'I Was Horrified by Lengths Men Will Go to Mistreat Other Men'

Barack Obama's great uncle was one of the soldiers who liberated a subcamp of Buchenwald. One week before the US president's planned stopover in Germany, where he is expected to visit the concentration camp memorial, SPIEGEL spoke to Charles Payne, 84, about his experiences in WWII.

SPIEGEL: Mr. Payne, early in June your great-nephew, President Barack Obama, will visit the former concentration camp Buchenwald, which you helped liberate at the end of the war. Will he be travelling in your footsteps?

Charles Payne: I don't buy that. I was quite surprised when the whole thing came up and Barack talked about my war experiences in Nazi Germany. We had never talked about that before. This is a trip that he chose, not because of me I'm sure, but for political reasons."

"The Hong Kong Connection" is a legal thriller about a gutsy female attorney who takes on high ranking International officials. It's a taut, rollercoaster of a ride from New York to Palm Beach to Washington D.C. to Hong Kong. The plot is expertly woven, the characters persuasive, and the dialogue snappy and spot on.

There is a a big difference with the context of the photos. One is an amateur, vanity shot of a kid, and yes he looks stupid. The other is a staged photo to show the princess helping the war effort. Does she look like she's applying true elbow grease? Does she look like she's actually in the process of changing a tire? C'mon. I doubt she contributed much to the motor pool.

The Pistols made some great-sounding noise. But who's still around, them or the Queen?

As has been pointed out here and elsewhere, QE2 is head of state of not one but two of the principal military powers involved in the D-Day landings, who taken together dwarfed the presence of the Free French. Once upon a time Canada punched well above its weight in the service of freedom, something of which its citizens should be eternally proud.

Posted by: curious at May 29, 2009 9:42 PM

I concede that those photographs of the then Princess Elizabeth are staged. That is the least of the sins committed in that war. I remember.
If the morale of the British people had gone down, it would have been the end.
We were told that the Royal Family would remain, if the Germans invaded. The King was pictured at the rifle butts. He would be ready to "fire at will". Churchill said that he would be ensconced in the catacombs. He would have his revolver- one bullet for the first Nazi and one for himself.
All good stuff. The anti-aircraft guns were not effective. Churchill was informed, wasting ammo he was told. He knew the Londoners- the poor one's were cramped in the shelters. A knowing lad this Churchill. "Just keep on firing, keep on booming, quoth he.

I would warrant that the good Dominion of Canada was well and ready for the Royal Family and Churchill. We snots would have caught up on our dubious German language.

Well, the Canadians came over to rescue us "kippers" as I was cheerfully told. No hard feelings of course.

The Daily Mirror loved it every time a church was bombed. Well, there is a bit of my wonderful war.
PS> The Luftwaffe failed to shut me up. (LAUGHS)

Either a country can go on printing up money and the whole system is a lie, or if it is not.....

Whilst I would like to be able to pin the snub on Obama I think it only fair to apportion blame equally to Obama, the frog weasel Sarkozy, and comrade Brownstainovich. Glorious leader (in hiding) of the former Great Britain.

ZaNuLabour and old Labour don't much care for the military. Witness the shameful treatment of former Gurkhas. The British government was arm twisted into granting them the right to apply for British citizenship. They are quick enough to hand out British passports to economic migrants who travel half the world to gain access Britain's welfare benefits, but soldiers who have put their lives on the line are, or were, not welcome. So it doesn't surprise me that no one in the Foreign Office or at No.10 Downing street gave it a thought when there was no invite for Brenda. The Labour goverment is by and large a motley collection of ex student union marxists and assorted tossers who are soon to be seen gracing the local dole offices. Hurrah!

I liked the WWII headline: "Buckingham Palace Again Bombed... Resolution Strethened by German Barbarity". Nowadays, I'm sure the word "barbarity" would be in quotes, if indeed it were used at all.

what kind of poetry or lyrics would anyone expect from someone named Johnny Rotten? Or a Joey Shithead for that matter? This is not talent, it is not even nonsense poetry, It's infantile crudity,
but it is what one expects from anarchists. If you can't add to the conversation Gary, just keep quiet and learn.

Gary - if you have such a giant brain - may I enquire if you have read the comlpete "Das Kapital"?

I've never commented on my brain size...........but THANX!

As for the book.......I haven't read it, but I'll guess that Johnny has due to the social comments he has made at the time (1977) when Britain was in trouble and the outlook for many youths was bleak! Hence his angry outlook on life.

The Pistols made some great-sounding noise. But who's still around, them or the Queen?

Actually Dave, the remaining members of the Pistols completed a Tour in 2008, and anyone with ANY knowledge of the music industry knows that Johnny was always active after the Pistols broke up founding the band Public Image LTD, among other endeavors.

You are correct that the Queen and her racist/bigoted distant cousin/husband Philip are still around.

So, Larry seems to think that great writers must have great sounding names! Quick, someone tell all the publishing companies that we have a new criteria for them! They must also only publish what Larry deems worthwhile! Same goes for the music industry. You see, just because Larry is too thick to understand the underlying message in text/music, it MUST be garbage and dismissed. I'm sure he read the text I posted, but his mind cramped because he didn't understand the context in which it was written. I'm here to help Larry! Take the line "'Cos tourists are money" You see Larry, to an 18 year old with no future job prospects at that time with Englands economy in the dumps, it's hard to comprehend all the pomp and glamour for the Queen and her paid for lifestyle all because an accident of birth while her subjects starve! Easy enough for you? So perhaps YOU should "just keep quiet and learn"!

You commented on the size of SDA commenters' brains, and found them lacking. I decided to ask you, since you are so wise /sarc.

Could you get Mr. Rotten to explain "Das Kapital" to me - all four volumes? Without using bodily fluids/solids? Thanks.

Wot about Wills?

"to an 18 year old with no future job prospects at that time with Englands[sic] economy in the dumps..." - Sort of like now - again, thanks to Labour.

Long live Nigel Hanaford, Tory MEP South-East England!
