So, something good DOES come out of every tragedy! One less Lennon record on earth = a good thing.

What a pathetic nation Canada is: two doubly-foreign bums spent a week at one of our hotels 40 years ago and we still talk about it like it was the moon landing or the first heart transplant.

We can't build World Trade Centers or even the planes that fly into them, but we serve up some damn fine room service to hippies back in a previous century! I'm surprised we haven't put it on a g-damn stamp by now.

Drove from Paris to the Amsterdam Hilton
Talking in our beds for a week
The newspeople said
"Say, what're you doing in bed?"
I said, "we're only trying to get us some peace"

Chr1st, you know it ain't easy
You know how hard it can be
The way things are going
They're gonna crucify* me

~Ballad of John & Yoko

*Close, but happiness is a warm gun, bang bang, shoot shoot.

peace out 8^D

"If nobody ever got out of BED in the morning there wouldn't be any WAAAARS!"

Threateningly, in a high-pitched, exaggerated, nasal Liverpudlian whine conveying infinte smugness - to shut up people daft enough to bring up this sad episode.

Kate,

sorry for the OT, not sure if you read the open thread awhile back, but as a long time reader and commenter, I just wanted to let you know I have my own blog. If you've like "biff" the commenter, you'll love biff the blogger.

Cheers, and keep on being the best blogger around (the first and last site of the day)!

I thought I heard an enraged scream coming from a northeasterly direction about an hour ago, and here I find it was Shaidle blowing a gasket.

Kathy, that kind of explosion can't be good for your blood pressure. I recommend lots of deep breathing and running around the block. Maybe chase the cat with a broom. ~:D

I guess Lennon was nearly deaf and blind by then; Imagine listening to Yoko singing in bed.

Posted by: Bernie at May 26, 2009 9:30 PM

Five letter word for Lennon: Idiot. He imagined all the people with no ambition, pride or common sense. Agents of societal rot just like him.

Posted by: Martin B. at May 26, 2009 10:29 PM

Unfortunately Lennon did what Bono does now. Meddles in things he doesn't really understand. The real problem is people listen to them and it gives the credibility.

I always thought Lennon had completely wasted his talent. With the Beatles he was great. Great singer, good guitar player and he had great taste in rock and roll. When he moved to New York he could have done some great records. He could have put together some great bands. I'm talking Steve Cropper, Billy Preston, Hi Records, he could have put together the greatest sessions guys in one band. Then changed them for the next record. He ends up playing with a lot of bad hippies and putting out some real schlock.

He did put Jessie Ed Davis on a few of his records. Great guitar player. If you comb through those records you barely hear him and I don't think there's 1 guitar solo.

He stopped doing the only thing he was good at. Playing rock and roll.

Plus there was Yoko. Don't get me started.

Gord: Have to agree with you on that. I still have his "John Lennon, Rock and Roll" album. It is a great album and I wish he would have stuck to what he was good at.
Ono, oh no...

one of my flawed heroes....he coulda come around if he posted here .....WE coulda changed him...he was a CHANGEABLE guy obviously...

so lay off slagging john.....he was an idealist but a protean intellect....so lots of things coulda happened...intellectually.....'imagine' john penning songs on OUR behalf....'imagine ' john at the RNC....

What were John Lennon's last words?

Yoko! Oh No!

Posted by: PhilM at May 27, 2009 9:48 AM

Lennon wasn't interested in peace or he wouldn't have donated to the IRA. He was just on the other side.

As for the reporter's assertion that Lennon "worked so hard to prevent" terrorist attacks by Muslims on NYC, it's beneath contempt.

grooth.

the vitriol here. GET OVER IT.

it wasn't John Lennon flying the planes eh?

he was an ARTIST. you know, not the ones that start businesses or pick fights with other nations over resources.

personally I think they shot the wrong beatle.

2 down, 2 to go.

next !!!

I think Lennon was the one that said he (They?, Beatles) were so naive to have followed and believed the Guru in India while on their month religious drug fueled craze...The Mahavishnu (I think that was his name) ended up just being a horny old guy who just wanted to "party" with the groupy tag-alongs. Lennon was furious he was taken for a gullible believer in the end.

It's only a point of debate now if, had he survived (And he would be close to 70 now) if he would have remained a naive doofus like Bono or Penn and most of the Hollywood set or would he have seasoned into something more mature and balanced.
One thing for sure, he was always questioning his surroundings and beliefs and he was not a stubborn ideologue or stringent follower...He studied life a lot.

RHTT: The "horny old guy" was the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. I have no idea why I know this.
And "their month religious drug fueled craze"? Oh lord, if it had only been a month.
At his best, John was a fine pop musician. But so what, really?
The man who wrote "Imagine no Possessions" kept a seperate room at the Dakota in New York so that Yoko's fur coats could be stored at a slightly cooler temperature.

yeah old john lennon woulda totally been into raping iraqis with truncheons. what a horrid little man...thank god someone shot him huh?

from yahoo.com:"Photographs of Iraqi prisoner abuse which U.S. President Barack Obama does not want released include images of apparent rape and sexual abuse, Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper reported on Thursday.

The images are among photographs included in a 2004 report into prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib prison conducted by U.S. Major General Antonio Taguba.

Taguba included allegations of rape and sexual abuse in his report, and on Wednesday he confirmed to the Daily Telegraph that images supporting those allegations were also in the file.

"These pictures show torture, abuse, rape and every indecency," Taguba, who retired in January 2007, was quoted as saying in the paper.

He said he supported Obama's decision not to release them, even though Obama had previously pledged to disclose all images relating to abuses at Abu Ghraib and other U.S.-run prisons in Iraq.

"I am not sure what purpose their release would serve other than a legal one," Taguba said. "The sequence would be to imperil our troops, the only protectors of our foreign policy, when we most need them, and British troops who are trying to build security in Afghanistan.

"The mere depiction of these pictures is horrendous enough, take my word for it."

The newspaper said at least one picture showed an American soldier apparently raping a female prisoner while another is said to show a male translator raping a male detainee.

Others are said to depict sexual assaults with objects including a truncheon, wire and a phosphorescent tube.

The photographs relate to 400 alleged cases of abuse carried out at Abu Ghraib and six other prisons between 2001 and 2005.

Say, "you guys never cease to amaze... ", I seem to remember something about those American soldiers being found guilty of all that stuff and going to jail.

Don't I also remember your guy Barry refusing to release the pictures? Maybe because the pecker heads who did it were in jail already, and it was never US policy to do that stuff no matter what Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid say?

Just sayin'.

ROC: "Accomplish even 1% of what lennon did and then you can have some room to talk"

I have. Lennon's views were stupid leftist drivel and he was an idiot. What can be expected of a drug hazed dreamer that never had to work a real job in his life (although he probably learned how to use a bedpan real good).

Lennon said that Imagine was "an anti-religious, anti-nationalistic, anti-conventional, anti-capitalistic song." He also described it as "virtually the Communist Manifesto."

Doesn't sound like a potential Fox News convert to me. His music's catchy but the content came straight from Ponyville' d'Rouge.
