First Came The Marxist, Then Came The Czars

It's like Russian history, written backwards!

President Obama is expected to announce late this week that he will create a "cyber czar," a senior White House official who will have broad authority to develop strategy to protect the nation's government-run and private computer networks, according to people who have been briefed on the plan.

The adviser will have the most comprehensive mandate granted to such an official to date and will probably be a member of the National Security Council but will report to the national security adviser as well as the senior White House economic adviser, said the sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deliberations are not final.

And, not subject to confirmation hearings.

(One assumes the Kossacks will be tickled red.)

"Tickled" Red?

Currently there are interesting times in California.
The California Supreme Court is due to rule as to whether Proposition 8 stands or is discarded.
The Justices are skating on the edge of getting turfed by the same forces who succeeded in getting propositon 8 through.
Power to the people.......

Thanks.

Private networks?

Good luck with that, slick.

Posted by: mojo at May 26, 2009 10:39 AM

Not to nitpick, but the Cossacks were legendary UKrainian nationalists and certainly not Russian, nor communist. It's actually a compliment for guy to be called a "Cossack" in our community. It means he's brave and manly.

Posted by: SuperUke at May 26, 2009 10:52 AM

Well, the Kossacks I linked to are communists. :)

Posted by: Kate at May 26, 2009 10:58 AM

More 'transparency and openness' in the Obama administration. It really is like 1984, where the words used are the exact opposite of what the true intention is.

Posted by: grok at May 26, 2009 10:59 AM

So lets have the Government mandate one solution for all network security so when it is penetrated the hackers and cyber-attackers will have access to everything. Nothing like picking a winner via Government Task Force or Panel.

Obama appears to be channeling Hugo Chavez!

Posted by: ian at May 26, 2009 11:12 AM

Car Czar, Cyber Czar. Expect that there soon will be some bigwig in charge of all businesses. It will be truly the "Biz Czar".

Hey, wasn't spying on the citizens a bad thing when Bush was doing it?

Wouldn't circumventing the House and Senate have been considered hitlerian and fascist if Bush had dared to try it?

Is the NYT still in print? Did the economy force them to lay off all of their crack team of "journalists"?

SuperUke:

My father is from Cossack ancestry and you are correct about the attributes of the now-assimilated people.

Daily Kos ... Kossacks. Get it?

Posted by: set you free at May 26, 2009 11:24 AM

About those Cossacks...
Sonoma State is located in the famous whine country of California.
Wikipedia: "This mascot [Cossack] was to be removed in the fall of 2002 by a vote of the [Sonoma State] academic senate after the mascot was deemed offensive to Jewish and women’s groups on campus. This being due to the fact that Cossacks were reportedly notorious for historically oppressing Jewish people and women."
Final score: PC 1, Sonoma State 0.

O'Narcissist's Energy Czar: ChuManChu.

Chu say, "“Yes, absolutely? White roofs everywhere, yes.”"

Citoyen Dionky say, Chu has peaked too early.
...-

"Professor Steven Chu: paint the world white to fight global warming

The Nobel prize-winning physicist appointed by President Obama as US Energy Secretary wants to change the colour of roofs, roads and pavements so they reflect more of the Sun’s light and heat to combat global warming, he said today.

Professor Steven Chu, speaking at the opening of the St James’s Palace Nobel Laureate Symposium, for which The Times is media partner, said this simple and “completely benign” approach to “geo-engineering” could have a vast impact at low cost.

By lightening all paved surfaces and roofs to the colour of cement, it would be possible to reduce carbon emissions by as much as taking all the world’s cars off the roads for 11 years, he said.

Building regulations should insist that all flat roofs are painted white, while visible tilted roofs could be painted with “cool coloured” paints that look normal, but which absorb much less heat than conventional dark surfaces. Roads could be lightened to a concrete colour so they do not dazzle drivers in bright sunlight.

“I think with flat-type roofs you can’t even see, yes, I think you should regulate quite frankly,” Professor Chu said. “I would be in favour of that.”

Asked whether governments should be promoting white paint as a solution to climate change, he said: “Yes, absolutely? White roofs everywhere, yes.”"

Duuuuh like helloooo! Don't we live in Canada? I get my signal from Sask-Tel. A good number of servers are in Europe. As a matter of fact, looking at the time beside my comment, either this server is in Europe, or Kate's clock is waaaay off! Let the Yanks worry about their own security!

By no means were all Cossacks Ukrainian, let alone Ukrainian nationalists. Cossack indeed is not properly a nationality but a social class, and they came from a variety of backgrounds. They were individuals who were allowed by the Czar to live outside the bounds of civilized Russia, both geographically and culturally, without harassment as long as they sided with the Czar against the Turks and Mongols, and for that matter his domestic enemies, when needed. They lived everywhere that Russia had a frontier with Turks or Mongols, including Ukraine but also Caucasian and Asiatic Russia.

No doubt when modern Ukrainian nationalism developed in the late 19th century, it got a lot of support from Cossacks of Ukrainian descent or living in or near the Ukraine. They were rapidly becoming obsolete in the new industrial Russia, and they didn't need to be sold on the idea of living without interference from the Czar. That doesn't allow us to define Cossack as merely a form of Ukrainian nationalist.

Read Isaac Babel for a little blood-curdling info. on the Cossacks, at least in their Red Army manifestation.
And then there's the whole German-Cossack thing, WWII, not for the feint of heart. But you all know this.
The historical Cossacks date back to perhaps the 14th Century and are a different kettle of borscht.
My own ancestry is half-Uke. BTW

The One would very much like to have full control of all public and private internet/computer infrastructure in the USA (and elsewhere as well)the better to provide "favors" to his "friends" in the MSM, the movie biz, the music biz, and etc.

Luckily, Cuba has provided us with The Plan for dealing with these things. Its called file sharing by Sneaker Net. You can get a whack of stuff on a USB stick these days. Pass it on, comrade.

Should be a hackers' bonanza, and a giant sucking sound as anything critical goes off to overseas networks and servers.

More government, more control.
I'm glad to see someone's tax dollars wisely spent.

What is up with my Vista operating system asking me if I want to "download this file" when using the search box for "Small Dead Animals" after clicking on the link to access the site. When I hit cancel - explorer closes. I have no problems when I type smalldeadanimals.com in the address bar - explorer goes dirictly to the page.

Here is the message box when I click on the SDA link using a search engine (from any engine):

File Download

Do you want to save this file, or find a program online to open it?

Name: Index.rdf
Type: Unknown File Type, 9.55KB
From: www.smalldeadanimals.com

Choices Find, Save or Cancel.

This box has been coming up for the last few weeks when accessing this site through a search engine. Did not happen b4 when I used a search engine to access the SDA link. I have not changed my Antivirus program and the SDA site is the only site link that gives me this message.

Has anyone else experienced this, or can anyone here tell me why this is happening?

No-One, its your Official SDA Flying Monkey badge and decoder ring, plus membership forms for The Vast Right Wing Conspiracy and the NRA. And the Bilderburgers.

Hit "yes". You know you want to.

I just watched a very interesting little film called 'The Obama Deception', and while it sounds very much of the conspiracy theory genre, I've found very few of its facts wrong.

BTW, I have saved the entire film on my HDD as an AVI file. Don't know whether the above links to the entire film or just a snippet.

What a joke, almost as bad as the double clutching plan for the Stank (Pelosi) Car. WE need Several Orders of Magnitude... assholes. The fleshing out of Magnetic bearings (N to N) may have some promise, but they need to get real…

Questions of the Day

Is China going to under-write Carbon Trading?

Does China get the West or East Coast?

If Fuel goes to 10 Cents per Gallon; can we assume that Science has defeated AGW?

If fuel goes to $4.00 per gallon; can we fire all the scientists & replace them with cloned Turds? (without the smell)...

Do you feel better now Phantom?

Posted by: No-One at May 26, 2009 6:36 PM

Paint all the roads and roofs white.

Yes indeed, that's the ticket.

Then all the heat gets reflected Up, Up Up to the Heaviside Layer.

How will that help?

(don't the warmists believe that the global warming problem exists because reflected heat gets trapped by the CO2 in some layer above us?)

Only if you pushed "yes", No-One. You can't get the most out of the comments without your official decoder ring, y'know.

Or you could switch to Mozilla. It has much more entertaining alert boxes than Mickeysoft Internet Exploder. Free download, woo!

I run Mozilla on SGI Octane with Irix, I wanna see the virus that's going to infect that puppy! Also two flavors of Linux and of course dorky old XP. Its annoying crapware, but there are some things I just can't do without it.

One of my market review services notes that the climate change/carbon cap bill has cleared the House Energy Committee. It's being called the Waxman-Markey bill.

This piece of legislation simply begs to be re-christened the Wackjob-Malarkey bill.

One can only hope that it has a difficult ride, but with this congress, it's probably as good as passed. The service may well be right about investors having to play the ball where it lies, but it doesn't make me feel quite right that I can cut my losses by folding on perfectly good electric utilities that have served America well for a century in some cases, and changing my bet to dicey technology with limited applicability and trading platforms based on mass hysteria. What happens when the Gore-bull warming party is over?

Posted by: felis corpulentis at May 26, 2009 9:58 PM

I was thinking along the same lines as foobert@7:10 p.m. I see photographs of places like Greece where a lot of houses are painted white to keep them cool inside, but reflecting the heat back to the atmosphere would seem to increase the warming in said atmosphere, wouldn't it? I'm not a physicist, so perhaps one can come along and straighten out this conundrum ...
