Posted by Kate at May 19, 2009 12:42 PMWith debate looming on Obama's spending request to cover military and diplomatic operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, the official says Democrats will deny the Pentagon and Justice Department $80 million to relocate Guantanamo's 241 detainees.
Obamassiah is the first politician who can talk out of both sides of his mouth, his teleprompter and his arse end, all at the same time.
The first Chameleon Ventriloquist POTUS.
Hopefully the last.

Looks like social reformation will take the entire budget of the US treasury and all it's growing debt, but then we already knew that.
But who cares now that the world loves the USA because of Obama, why spend a nickle on defense?
Posted by: Momar at May 19, 2009 1:00 PM"I told you so"
Next you'll tell me that 90% of Americans will not get a (net) tax break; and , you'll tell me that American troops will not be out of Iraq in 6 months from inauguration.
Posted by: Indiana Homez at May 19, 2009 1:21 PMThat's slick. Congress won't approve the money to close Gitmo, so it stays. Obama always engineering something, especially his way out.
Posted by: Sounder at May 19, 2009 1:22 PMSo what is the shelf-life of The Big O's promises?
Posted by: Paul at May 19, 2009 1:53 PMObama made few concrete promises beyond the weasel-word phrase ‘hope and change,' which could mean whatever the listener wanted it to mean.
Closing Guantanamo was one.
Withdrawing troops from Iraq was another.
On issue one, can't be done, because there's no place to put the bad guys.
On issue two, he's now doing it two months later than Dubya promised.
Some record.
Posted by: set you free at May 19, 2009 2:00 PMDoes it cost $80 million to charter a plane from Cuba to Pearson?
Posted by: eljay at May 19, 2009 2:04 PMI've got a plan to relocate those terrorists for a lot less than $80 million.
It involves a short boat ride, not a plane, 241 padlocks and about $1000 worth of chain.
Posted by: Oz at May 19, 2009 2:16 PMWhy doesn't he just give them inner tubes. Hey if it's good enough for the Cubans....
Posted by: Largs at May 19, 2009 2:21 PMHey, as long as that poor kid comes HOME to Canada, who cares about the rest of them. Hopefully PMSH gives the young fella a couple mill to get him on his feet after he gets here to.
I have a plan for those 241 detainess, a sentence that would cause the Texas Rangers to blush. Send them to Ottawa--there--they can go work for Ruby Dhalla!! Five bucks says when they come out of her home--they'll never reoffend!!

Posted by: paulsstuff at May 19, 2009 3:56 PMWhy not simply release the 241 detainees outside the perimeter of the US base?
Let the Cubans handle 'em.
Posted by: JJM at May 19, 2009 3:57 PMpok @ 3:34 - It's true. I was speaking just before the election to an American friend of mine who voted for him (she has other fine qualities and anyway is registered in NY, so at least it made no difference, unless you count any possible peril to her immortal soul, but I digress)... I asked her what she thought about the whole Rev. Wright thing. Well the upshot was that Obama is a) the most principled hunk of hope-spewing awesomeness evah and b) a totally cynical pol who's pandered for decades to racists and morons and lunatics and sleazebags to further his career - which totally proves just how damn savvy he is! Oh, and he's Black! Which is absolutely irrelevant, and also the reason why he needs to be president!
I tells ya, I had a stiff drink.
naaah, democrats are not that smart. wait for it.

Posted by: Black Mamba at May 19, 2009 4:27 PMMe too.
Like I commented before, I spoke to a many who shamelessly said "because he's not an old white guy".
IMO it's too early to confront those that voted for him. Evidence of the damage BO is causing is far too cerebral for those in the middle-class that voted for him. Their intellectual laziness is the very trait that blinded them then and now. Until these people feel the pain in their everyday lives they will continue to blissfully enjoy their ignorance; and, when they do see their error, the instinct will be to go on the defensive and point the finger elsewhere, towards “right-wing extremists”. BO will pacify Americans just long enough (with their kids money) to arrange all of the pieces, then checkmate.
This unfortunately is just the beginning.
Fascinating how the public allows Obama to say, almost in the same breath, totally contradictory statements, and the public will accept both of them.
So, Obama's slick speech at Notre Dame, told the public that there are 'common grounds' between those in favour of abortion and those opposed. No, there aren't; the two actions are mutually exclusive. Yet, he claims there is common ground and people accept that!
Now, he's told the public that He will close Guantanamo; he can't; there's nowhere to send these detainees. Bush knew it; now, Obama knows it.
BUT, he can still maintain his verbal commitment to Close Guantanamo, and his minions in the Congress, will assist him in his actual inability to close it.
Incredible. It's not merely hypocrisy or manipulation. Obama operates in a pure textual fantasy world where contradictories can both exist.

Black Mamba is one of my favourite screen names here, very cool. In the past I posted under the name Play'nWitYoMomma but I thought it was a bit too racy for SDA so I changed it. For some reason I can't get the name Play'nWitYoMamba out of my head. Mind in the gutter, sorry.
Homez-
Play'nWitYoMamba is a perfectly valid nom-de blog.
You gettin' all pussy on us or what??
Actually, it's a self-defence mechanism. Judging by the conservative demographic I'm not to sure how many of those mommas qualify as cougars. More likely to find a sabre-tooth in these parts.
wrt Mamba, I suspect it's "Play'n at your own risk" with her. I wouldn't want her going "Loraina Bobbett" on me considering she's packing Hattori Hanzo steel. I'd still like to be able to post as Play'nWitMyMamba if I so choose.
On topic boys. Kate's the one who's packing.
Posted by: Black Mamba at May 19, 2009 5:50 PMOz, that's a hideous waste of perfectly good chain.
Concrete is much cheaper.
However, as Kate has clearly foreseen, pretty much every single thing the DemocRats have spent the last 8 years screeching and foaming at George Bush about, Obama is going to keep all that stuff and in fact do it more.
He's keeping military tribunals, the Guantanamo Bay prisoner of war camp AND the eeeevile water torture business. He's going to keep guys in Iraq, he's going to keep them in Afghanistan and I bet he's going to try for a short victorious war in Iran pretty soon. By 2010 he'll need something to take everybody's mind off their troubles.
He's also going to keep the Patriot Act and do lots more along those lines, with plenty of warrantless searches, wiretaps, email mining and etc. Big Brother gonna be watching you, boyee.
All those GM cars are going to phone home to the cops when you speed and when your pollution controls aren't perfectly adjusted too. "On Star, I'm from the government and I'm here to help you."
Posted by: The Phantom at May 19, 2009 6:04 PMTake the prisoners to the nearest beach, point them in the direction of Mecca and tell them to have a nice swim. Some fishing boats chumming the water a quarter mile out would be a nice touch.
Perhaps Harry Reid and Nancy Peloser could be swim instructors !
Yup! Gone all pussy on us, Homez.
Posted by: Atric at May 19, 2009 7:34 PMActually, Indy, I do appreciate the shout-out. The only archaeologists I can stand are the ones in fedoras with whips and machetes and browning semi-automatics for shootin' Nazis, so don't ever change.
On topic, this does mean Guantanamo isn't shutting down - yet, anyway. That's a good thing. Obama doing the right thing, accidently, for sleazy reasons is still... better than whatever else I was scared he was going to do. Like let most of them go.
Posted by: Black Mamba at May 19, 2009 8:11 PMOz;
Not a bad idea but I'd stick with a plane. Show them the door at 20,000 feet over the ocean and save on the cost of the locks and chains. The fish will take care of whatever small bits of them remain.
Posted by: bob c at May 20, 2009 12:04 AMI would return them back home.
He who comes from the desert should be returned to the desert.
They are no longer a threat, as Guantanamo has surely pacified them.

"Incredible. It's not merely hypocrisy or manipulation. Obama operates in a pure textual fantasy world where contradictories can both exist."
It would appear as if Obama knows his base well. He has convinced them that neither black nor white actually exists. Everything is just a shade of gray and he has the insight to adjust the shades for them. Contradictions in the shades are just illusions of optics and need to be ignored, for the greater good, of course.
He's making it up as he goes along, but he appears quite the sorcerer to the local natives.
What would be reasonable is that they leave Guantanamo with a Public apology for the water boarding, and a transcript of thier interrogations. Perhaps some small token of Appreciation for thier help
We must "not" be aware of the WWII Russian POW's aversion to be reunited with thier "Friends".
It's so unfair..........

I'm also ruggedly handsome, a little crabby, and I can outrun Imperial Destroyers:)
Posted by: Indiana Homez at May 20, 2009 11:04 AMbob c,
There are 241 of them.
The locks, chain, and boat ride would be cheaper than the plane fuel and they do have to be kept under control with the minimum risk to the safety U.S. Marines.
It would take just one boat trip.
(I guess if the 20,000 ft. altitude was in an unpressurized cabin and the crew wore portable oxygen your method could work, the terrorists would have to embark under lock and key, then they'd be unconsious w/o oxygen at 20 angels, and you'd have more than one plane trip unless it was a C-5)
They are no longer a threat, as Guantanamo has surely pacified them.

There are already 61 known Guantanmo released recidivists killed or captured. That is known for sure. How many are still operating?
I would make that number from this batch of 241 zero.
They don't release our guys alive.
Just drop them off where they were picked up. With a sack full of Obama T-shirts.
Posted by: Norman at May 20, 2009 12:50 PMThe US Congress (overwhelming Democrat majority) voted against closing GITMO down because of NIMBY. Not one of those congressmen/women wants the detainees in their backyards. Even Speaker Pelosi is reluctant to take them out of GITMO and relocate terrorists to San Francisco. The US will keep GITMO prison open - because the peace loving Europeans are not interested in transferring prisoners to their countries. Obama will have to backtrack big time.

WASHINGTON — An unreleased Pentagon report concludes that about one in seven of the 534 prisoners already transferred abroad from the detention center in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, are engaged in terrorism or militant activity, according to administration officials.
