Now is the time at SDA when we juxtapose!
"The federal government ran a deficit in April for the first time in 26 years, pushing the red ink so far this budget year to a record $802.3 billion."
"...it is indeed a good time to work for the Feds. Through the magic of compounding, my pay has increased by nearly 15% since my start date! No promotions or “step increases”, just the annual cost of living adjustment."
Posted by Kate at May 13, 2009 12:46 AMJust more evidence that Obama is trying to extend the government trough out past the usual corridors and into society. At some point, though, there will surely be a major backlash. The majority, who don't feed themselves or their families with money confiscated from their neighbours, are not going to appreciate having their families struggle just so Big Smooth Daddy can engage in empire-building on their dime.
If Americans don't see through this dangerous (by virtue of his position) scam-artist, America is going to be in serious trouble within ten or fifteen years. America with Obama as President has all the makings of an historic tragedy.
Posted by: EBD at May 13, 2009 3:05 AMAnother juxtaposition: the US deficit so far this fiscal year is not much less than twice Canada's entire national debt.

Bond buyers are getting very nervous about Obama. His only recourse is print money.
Can you say inflation ?

Posted by: Peter at May 13, 2009 10:05 AMThe dollar is sinking slowly, commoditiy prices are rising on no demand because of it, and yet the Fed still is crying deflation.
The deflation so far was due to the commodity bubble in the summer of 2008, did anyone remember the food and fuel inflation?
With inventories hitting lows and commodities rising faster than the demand we will simply see inflation from these normalized levels based on the USD weakness even without any productivity demands from growth.
Simply watch the energy complex oil, natgas, coal. No demand and rising prices.

Exactly this kind of thinking.
Posted by: Doug at May 13, 2009 10:21 AMObamica? Hmmm, I am thinking Obambwe instead. The only way out of this mess is to produce our way out of it. No amount of happy talk changes that hard fact.
Which is better, an economy where we do each other's laundry? Or an economy where we shuffle each other's papers?

I think of it as "the Obamanation of Desolation".
Posted by: Oz at May 13, 2009 10:37 AMWell, well, well - the Obama circle have taken on an old Liberal ploy, used with great effect by Trudeau and Chretien. Hire, hire, and hire some more, until everyone is working for the Feds. Furthermore, if the Feds hire someone who has been laid off, that person will be pathetically grateful and probably loyal forever to the Liberal or Democrat leaders, as the case may be. I don't remember if Machiavelli covered off this practice or not. Of course Gov't resources in the 16th C were not in any way comparable to those of the present day.
I am considering purchasing a new 42' wide screen TV so I can watch the upcoming New American Civil War in HD with Dolby 5.1 and stunning colors.
This current trend can't last, there are too many people in the USA who are NOT GOING TO PUT UP WITH OBONGO'S SOCIALIST HORDES destroying the country and everything it (used to) stand for. There is too much at stake. Plus, Americans are not Canadians, they don't 'spread em' so easily.
Posted by: Hello Birdy at May 13, 2009 10:59 AMStep one to leftarded hell: get as many people reliant on government as you can.
This creates a captive group of big-government voters.
Once a critical mass of people are leaching and sponging off of an ever-decreasing wealth base (known as the private sector) the fuse has been lit on your society's bomb belt. After that, it's only a matter of time before your once-great nation becomes a has-been nation. Just ask the Brits. Or worse, the Scots. Clearly, every good Scot left Scotland. Seems loafers and deadbeats are all that remain in country.
A 13% of GDP deficit is a fast-track way to self-detonation.
Posted by: Warwick at May 13, 2009 11:06 AMSo if you get cost of living increases due to inflation does that mean you'll get cost of living decreases during periods of deflation?

Posted by: Sounder at May 13, 2009 12:00 PMBefore clicking the links, I assumed that this post was referring to Canada. Federal employees can take 1 year maternity/paternity leaves with benefits topped up to 95% of their annual salary. They can take a "leave of absence" to do whatever they want and have their job guaranteed for them when they return. And what percent of people in Saskatchewan work for the government?

We in Canada have been losing freedoms faster than the US, and nobody does anything, we're too complacent.

Name one supstantive Obama policy which has come into effect in which you believe can be objectively characterized a sucess.

Posted by: Indiana Homez at May 13, 2009 3:25 PMWarwick:
Obama has successfully backed up his financial supporters, Big Labour, in every initiative he's taken.
And, he's successfully passed on the bill to the American taxpayer as he builds the brave new world of the USSA.
Chrysler owned 55% by the UAW.
The UAW will be given 39& ownership of GM this weekend.
He's done what Jack Layton is unable to do in Canada.
Posted by: set you free at May 13, 2009 4:41 PMSYF,
I suppose I should have said "objective measure of success to the nation" instead of his agenda.
He has done all those things you state. At the cost of his nation. More succinctly, the cost to his nation's children who will grow up to pay the inordinate cost of his legal vandalism and marxist extremism.
And to think I was an optimist about that creep when he appointed Volker to his team.

Rick,
Understand that PUSHBACK HAS STARTED.
Montana passed legislation that protects the state's rights pertaining to gun rights. They have set up the battle, destined for the SCOTUS, that defines state rights vs. federal interstate commerce. This has reverberations in more than just the gun rights.
Utah and Texas quickly announced that they were working on the same thing last week.
This week brings the announcement that Ohio and Missouri (? I think) will be next. Wyoming will be following suit.
I heard, an hour ago, that Minnesota (of all places, considering their vote for Franken) passed a similar law today.
The governors have seen the writing on the wall from the Obama administration, and do not like what they are reading. They are moving to protect state rights.
In the background the Obama left has to be absolutely sh*tting bricks. This WAS NOT part of the plan.
Lefties, take notice. Those are states (and the number is growing weekly) where you will have to fear the backlash from the rednecks that you have been so busy denigrating.
Since Obama has been so busy pissing on the military, the National Guard and the LEOs (he cut the budget in half for the fund that paid for the education of children of fallen LEOs last week) who will there be to protect you lefties?
Rick, if you come to join up you may have to BYO arms. We are all hording, you know. Recommend you email ahead for the password.
The chinese have been buying up gold & oil. All they have to do is call in the loans & with America with nothing to back their dollar. Its bankrupt time. China than can make thier currancy the world standard with back up.
Since the American dollar is the wold standard now, if it lost that position it would become hyper infaltion.
No wonder states are firewalling themselves from the Feds.

Once again, I feel duty bound to inject some fiscal intelligence into the debate. EBD, blaming this on Obama is ridiculous (not that he doesn't have plenty else to answer for, but not this one).
April 09 tax receipts are based on the 2008 calendar year, which last time I looked, was the last year on GWB's watch. The fact that tax receipts were down dramatically is a result of unemployment, corporate losses, and huge capital losses that took place in the last four months of 08. Tax receipts were down over $21 billion from the previous year. This is more than the estimated $18 billion deficit for the month.
For those looking for informed financial commentary on the US, I recommend zerohedge.blogspot.com. For those looking for hilarious coverage of the personal and financial pecadillos of Wall Street and Washington, I recommend dealbreaker.com.
