Father Raymond J. De Souza, Full Comment
I grew up in Calgary and I’m proud of my Alberta roots. So the other day when Mark Steyn noted that, in regard to the Danish cartoon controversy, Alberta was the only jurisdiction in the world which prosecuted anyone (Ezra Levant) over it, I felt a pang of embarrassment. It’s going to get a lot more embarrassing.

Posted by: ural at May 7, 2009 10:50 PMI just got back from an all candidates meeting here in Vancouver. Didn't learn a thing as it was all talking points but it was still interesting to see.
What was a little shocking to see in person though were the strident views of the Green Party candidates. The NDP is certainly left of centre (or as Kate said on Adler today, ALL Canadian political parties are left of centre) but my oh my, those Greens are so far to the Left that there's no room remaining on the teeter-totter.
I'm more convinced than ever that if the Greens ever gain a foothold of power or even the balance of power then we're doomed. That's the primary reason I'm voting 'No' for STV.

2. Native Land Claims and something called the recognition and reconciliation legislation which stands to ruin us in the resource sector. (a previous post of mine). A big one page BC Conservative Party add in the Province today; otherwise, nada.

"KYOTO VS. KIDS
HOW GREENS HURT THE PLANET
By BJORN LOMBORG(sic)
IN the heart of a financial crisis, most of us carefully consider every last purchase. It is important that politicians do the same when making vital policy decisions.
Instead of focusing on initiatives with the greatest benefits, they tend to be swayed by those with the most vocal advocates. Take the Kyoto Protocol. Its $180 billion annual global cost would perhaps be worth the investment if it made any substantial difference to global warming. But even if Kyoto were implemented for the rest of this century, it would cut temperatures by just 0.3 degrees Fahrenheit.
This doesn't pass a basic cost-benefit test. The investment would cause more immediate financial hardship than eventual good. There are many better uses for the money.
That point was underscored by Copenhagen Consensus 2008, a project I designed to champion the use of economic tools in international aid and development policy.
For two years before Copenhagen Consensus 2008, teams of experts wrote papers identifying the best ways to solve the world's biggest problems: air pollution, conflict, disease, inadequate education, global warming, malnutrition and hunger, sanitation and water challenges, subsidies and trade barriers, terrorism and gender-disparity issues. They identified the investments that would best tackle each challenge and outlined the costs and benefits of each.
A group of prestigious economists -- including five Nobel laureates -- gathered and examined this research. They took the long menu of investments and turned it into a prioritized list of opportunities. At the bottom -- the least cost-effective investment the world could make to respond to any of these problems -- was dealing with climate change through immediate CO2 cuts, as the Kyoto Protocol attempts."

Posted by: eastern paul at May 8, 2009 10:28 AMSadly, the MAN trucks aren't street legal in Canada due to protectionism. You can have them make them with International Truck chassis but not they'll only go up to 6x6's. Also keep in mind these are the militarized MAN trucks (thicker steel, heaver axles, etc.)
Mercedes has also pulled the Unimog from North America. They're much smaller trucks but they're better 4x4's with higher ground clearance. You can buy refurbished chassis from a couple of years ago though.
The other specialist who makes these (also in Germany) is Action Mobil but they don't have any North American facilities so you can't buy one. http://www.actionmobil.com/

Top teacher told rights fracas much ado about nothing. Then why do it?
By RICK BELL
The Calgary Sun
Kids forgotten in rights push
The guy goes into a meeting and, on a scale of 1 to 10, hopes for 10 and figures he gets maybe a 2.
Yes, teacher prez Frank Bruseker heads behind closed doors yesterday for a gabfest with Lindsay Blackett, the province's human rights head honcho and Dave Hancock, the supremo of schools.
Frank wants the Tories to back down and not bring down some cloud cuckooland law where parents can take their kids out of classes they believe are against their religious beliefs and haul teachers or school boards before the Human Rights Commission if they feel they haven't exercised the full extent of their newly-minted rights.
He wants them to put the lid back on the can of worms.
The two Tory bigwigs don't disagree.
At least if they disagreed, there would be a debate.
Instead, they insist what they have been insisting from their first syllable.
Nothing is happening. Don't worry, be happy.
Enshrining the rights of parents in Alberta's human-rights law and allowing kids to score a Get Out Of Class Free card when matters "deal explicitly with religion" really changes squat.
Huh? It sounds more than a little odd.
Are governments in the habit of changing laws to do nothing? Why is this bonkers brainwave going ahead if going ahead actually means standing still?
Why go through the grief, all the opposition and all the aggravation, including Blackett and Bruseker squaring off on national TV this morning, if it is near meaningless?"

Fellow MP says Dhalla 'devastated'
OTTAWA–Liberal MP Ruby Dhalla is "devastated" at the potential loss of her political career, says her close friend Judy Sgro, a fellow MP and former immigration minister.
One has to wonder what it feels like to be a Filipino nanny, paid far below the minimum wage, and trapped in a situation somewhat akin to an indentured servant. One has to wonder if Ruby Dhalla has ever had empathy for someone in that situation.

I noticed the tires were way underinflated. That is going to ineffiecent and wreak havoc on the gas mileage.
The vehicle has a traction system that inflates and deflates the tires based on traction, this is required in the sand.
I do not think that this vehicle is the pinnacle of green engineering what with 1150 litres of fuel capacity and fuelling support for support vehicles.
Posted by: Illiquid Assets at May 8, 2009 4:24 PM(PDF warning) Ali A. Jalali, Winning in Afghanistan
Seven years into the US-led effort to bring peace and stability to Afghanistan, the mission is on the verge of failing. This unsettling new reality is the result of key international and Afghan actors having for years pursued a narrow strategy focused almost exclusively on short-term goals at the expense of a broader and more cohesive strategy. Afghanistan, consequently, is now plagued by a threat environment shaped and sustained by an expanding insurgency, widespread criminality, ineffective governance, and the absence of a coordinated response to continuing challenges. Violence inside the country has risen steadily since 2006, and in 2008 levels of violence in Afghanistan exceeded levels of violence in Iraq...
Correct on the tire pressure, Illiquid Assets, undecidable on the fuel capacity (without further data). The engineering efficiency of the vehicle is principally related to its rate of consumption, not its capacity. Otherwise we couldn't have efficient tankers, yet we do.

As it turns out, recycling is not recession-proof.
At the St. Michel Environmental complex, tones of recycling material from Montreal's green bins are piling up.
A private company, Groupe Tiru, sorts and sells the paper, glass and metals on the international market. In the past year those materials have decreased in value, making them difficult to sell.
The paper, glass and steel that once fetched a handsome price is now parked, with the city's OK to stock what it cannot sell...
