Although I've been a steadfast supporter of the Bush administration's war on Islamic fascism, I may be changing my mind about the criminal investigation controversy over waterboarding. In fact, the more I think about it, the more I think I'm for it;
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was briefed on the use of “enhanced interrogation techniques” on terrorist suspect Abu Zubaydah in September 2002, according to a report prepared by the Director of National Intelligence’s office and obtained by ABC News.
The report, submitted to the Senate Intelligence Committee and other Capitol Hill officials Wednesday, appears to contradict Pelosi’s statement last month that she was never told about the use of waterboarding or other special interrogation tactics. Instead, she has said, she was told only that the Bush administration had legal opinions that would have supported the use of such techniques.
The report details a Sept. 4, 2002 meeting between intelligence officials and Pelosi, then-House intelligence committee chairman Porter Goss, and two aides. At the time, Pelosi was the top Democrat on the House intelligence committee.
The meeting is described as a “Briefing on EITs including use of EITs on Abu Zubaydah, background on authorities, and a description of particular EITs that had been employed.”
EITs stand for “enhanced interrogation techniques,” a classification of special interrogation tactics that includes waterboarding.
And "had been employed" stands for "she knew waterboarding was already underway and gave it her stamp of approval."
I know what you're thinking - that this is an unbecoming flip-flop on my part, that true conservatives don't sacrifice their principles on the altar of political opportunism.
Well, conservative, conshmervative - even Karl Rove would pay good money to see Pelosi handcuffed to Dick Cheney.
Related: A CNN survey goes horribly wrong...
Is it just me, or does ABC appear to be the only "traditional" network left with a news operation (even if only through its blogging component) that's trying to do something more than merely give a virtual blow-job to The Big Owe and the Democratic Party?

Oh, and "good money"? I'd pay real money to see those two handcuffed together.

Pelosi was informed that this technique HAD been used.
Now, how's she going to slither out of this and pretend moral outrage and shocked innocence?
And since Obama's strategy of manipulation requires that he accuse the past regime of nefarious actions - how's he doing to deal with this? He needs to defame the Bush era. How can he deal with the fact that his key aide, Pelosi, is directly linked to that era?

gym - I don't see Obama curtailing Pelosi's power; he needs her. Remember, he has no ability to develop policies and programs on his own. And she's too powerful for him to reject her.
And justthinkin - I don't think that an explanation of 'we were trying to catch the GOP doing something bad' will work;
The only reason Obama is bringing up this issue of EIT is manipulation of the electorate. He's not interested in the safety of the US for his narcissism leads him to think that he can control everyone by his 'charm' alone.
He's also not interested in justice; he feels nothing about the events of 9/11. He feels no commitment to, no loyalty to the USA. For him, reality only exists within his 'text'; his world that he creates, authors and lives in. There is no other reality.
His focus is only on himself, and he wants to prevent any movement of the electorate away from him and to the Republican or Independent perspectives.
I suspect he'll let this issue wither and try to come up with other images that he can use to attack the previous era. Remember, he's not doing it out of any sense of morality, ethics, justice. He has no principles in these areas. He's doing it for purely political reasons, to manipulate and control the electorate.

Hell no! No investigation!
If there's no investigation there's no proof, and that keeps Bush safe. Do you really want to trade Pelosi for Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and possibly others? And the takedown on the Republicans would be ten-times worse. Knowing about the EIT and lying about it, vs ordering it and lying about. Gee, I wonder who will get punished more? Why do you think the lefties want civilian gun ownership gone?
Many of their arguments are projection. It's themselves they are afraid of but are too sick and so far into denial that they can't see it.
It'll be very interesting when they run into the brick wall of the right.
Watching Glenn Beck today? It seems that Montana has brought about gun legislation that essentially is telling the Feds to pound it. They also seem to be trying to force the matter ASAP into the Supreme Court.
The commentator, Judge Napolitano, and Beck are of the opinion that if it was favourably ruled (the possibility seems pretty good right now) it would set the left back as far as Woodrow Wilson.
What did Wilson bring in? Income Tax.
Oklahoma also forced a 10th Amendment Resolution this week. Other States have similar resolutions on their respective tables.
You get the feeling that the safety valves in the US Constitution are about to blow and the left's march will again hit a brick wall?
They'll lose what's left of their minds and it won't be pretty as they spiral into historical irrelevance.

Posted by: Speedy at May 7, 2009 10:23 PMbrent weston - I'm hardly the only one to comment that Obama shows all the clinical characteristics of a pathological narcissist.
Krauthammer, who was a chief resident in psychiatry is only one of the many experts in this area (see also Vaknin) who has made that conclusion.
In my view, it isn't a mild case but a serious case that has moved into a pathology. That is, he lives, totally, completely, in a fictional world of his own authorship. One in which he controls and must control, all interactions with people. if he feels he can control you, then you ae allowed into this world. The focus of people in this 'bubble' has to be on him and has to be adoration. He cannot handle criticism and anyone who criticizes him, simply doesn't exist anymore.
Now, when he cannot ignore the people who criticize, when they continue to try to interact with him, this threatens the safety of the fictional world in which he lives - and he would then become angry, frightened, and quite vicious.
He'll destroy or try to destroy anyone who threatens this bubble in which he lives.
If Pelosi threatens this textual bubble in which he lives, he'll throw her to the wolves, but I suspect she's too powerful and she'll fight him. So, how does he manage to smear the Bush era and yet, keep his people tied to him? Very difficult. I suspect he'll leave it to others and abstract himself from the situation.
Posted by: ET at May 7, 2009 10:25 PMAs interesting as this is in the news, my guess is that it will not withstand a constitutional challenge.
From the US Constitution
Article 1, Section 9, third clause:
No bill of attainder or ex post facto Law shall be passed.
From Wikipedia:
An ex post facto law (from the Latin for "after the fact") or retroactive law, is a law that retroactively changes the legal consequences of acts committed or the legal status of facts and relationships that existed prior to the enactment of the law.
Brent Bambam has already done that with AIG and Chrysler. He signed the bill for bonuses and then went after them. With Chrysler he overturned the gaurantee the bondholders had received before they bought the issue. The tour buses to the homes of executives and voting irregularities demonstrate he has been operating outside legal boundaries all along. No one has called him on it yet but somewhere along the line there will be someone with enough money he can't ruin. The Tea Parties are having that effect. There are just too many people to go after. I think that is the way to go. He tries to pass it off but his face says something else.
Posted by: Speedy at May 7, 2009 10:38 PMThanks, ET, for your thoughts.
Speedy/Curious: It does appear as though some of these things will be tested in the Supreme Court over the next few years. I remember FDR had at least a couple items of the New Deal overturned; however, FDR kept getting re-elected and could nominate different judges as he outlived his opponents on the Court. I also remember hearing about a radio iterview in Chicago several years back in which Obama revealed his problem with the US Constitution: it stated what the government could not do to the citizens but did not stipulate what the government must/should do for the citizens. He really does not understand the idea underlying the US Constitution is to limit the powers of government and not enable as he wants.

I agree that things are going to be somewhat of a mess here for the next few years. The US is stuck with this guy until Jan 2013. I estimate the Senate will remain Democrat after 2010 even in the event of a severe voter turnabout in 2010. It is too early to speculate on what will happen to the House in 2010.
However, there are some bright spots for those of us who are patient - very patient. It seems to me that Americans are waking up to the fact that they have made a mistake. It is not just the polls (satisfied/dissatisfied ratio), but also from conversations with people here. As strange as it seems to those of us who did our due diligence with Obama before the election, a lot of people simply trusted the MSM to do their work for them and they have found out too late that they made a mistake.
Some people have said that Obama is a polarizer - you either hate him or love. That statement may or may not be true; however, it was not true for the election season. There was a third category during the election season made up of people who could not make up their minds between Dems and GOP and allowed the MSM help them make their choice. It is this third group that is very angry right now. Some of them are even more bothered than those of us who supported McCain. Why? It is simply the emotion of betrayal. They are comming to the realization that the MSM has lied to them.
If this recession lingers and/or deepens, Obama and the Dems will receive the emotional blame for it. It is just the way things are in politics. I predict that we are going to see more backlash against the MSM for this betrayal of the public trust. Kate's asteroid series will have plenty of fodder over the next few years. Meanwhile, this third group will find it easier to come over to the right side if we tone down our "I told you so's"

Courts may make a ruling on existing law, but Parliament (We the People) have the final and only voice in what is the law. YES! We can change the Law & its the role of all MP's to explore those options without interference for or by the Courts.

Despite his concern for the environment, President Obama has a bus idling in the driveway for Pelosi. He would gladly sacrifice her for the cause of advancing his Progressive agenda for America. In a revolution, there are casualties on both sides. It would be well worth the cost of a Pelosi to get the Bush/Cheney legacy firmly established into the Progressives' narrative. Plus the distraction of a witch hunt is not a "crisis" they would waste. Both the soft left and the right would square off against each other and be less aware of his Progressive march. There is no shortage of useful idiots to become her successor. She's a loose cannon, and a liability. Daly pointed out that the report backs up Pelosi’s contention that she was briefed only once on “enhanced interrogation techniques.” Her name does not appear elsewhere in the report.
"As this document shows, the speaker was briefed only once, in September 2002," Daly said.
Herein lies “Blinky’s” best defense. As a leftie Kindergarten alumnus she has every right to a short attention span, and hence she was entitled to “reinforcement-briefings”.
