I bet you thought this made no sense at all when he said it, didn't you?
He spoke directly to Stephen Harper, condemning him for failing to unite Canadians by setting province against province, group against group, region against region, individual against individual.
Now, watch this...
"Do you speak French?" inquired Liberal MP Pablo Rodriguez. "Don't you think someone who has responsibility such as yours should be bilingual?"
Toews -- who speaks English and Spanish as well as his first language, German -- was incensed. "I should feel free to be able to speak the official language of my choice and for you to even ask that question is an insult," he raged.
But Jean-Claude D'Amours, another Liberal MP, pursued the matter. "It seems to me that when we talk about official languages and bilingualism in Canada, you should be a bilingual person to better be able to serve the people," D'Amours said.
Make no mistake about one thing. This was a deliberate and cynical maneuver by Michael Ignatieff to stir up the unity file.
In a real world, with real grown up politics, the Canadian media would be camped outside Ignatieff's office, demanding he explain what his MP's are up to. But they won't because they're not real journalists, and haven't been for a very long time.
Get your popcorn ready.

Free money for Quebec in return for a majority.
Let's talk about unity instead of how we will make a living, shall we?
Liberal economics 101, required to support keeping power - pump oil of out the ground in the West, sell it to the Americans, tax the hell out of it, and use proceeds to buy the Quebec vote for perpetual majority governments.
Establish price fixing boards for ag products to make sure Quebec dairy farmers are along for the ride.
Set up and maintain a grain monopoly so international wheeling and dealing can be part of the fun - deals, deals, deals, make under the cloak of 'diplomacy'.
Poor old Steven Harper, he just wants to run the country fairly well. It's just not fair.
We can expect the old tried and true wedges to be hauled out and sharpened again - national unity (moan - please, Quebec, take a friggin hike, au revoir, so long, a dios...) - and Women's Issues. Yes, only a Liberal really knows how to please a woman - free her from the burden of babies by dishing up the day care. You see, a conservative doesn't love babies and women like a liberal does. Conservatives, thick skulled knuckle draggers that they are, fail to see how women are voting machines that churn out future voting machines.
Journalism in Canada - oh puleeze. Propaganda arm of the LPC.
Looks like the newspaper bailout is fizzling in the States. Too bad.
Corrupt. Rotten to their morally-vacuous core. That's the brand image they have, and have well earned it.
The Liberal "care" is a scam - they care about themselves and the ability to skim, scam, and plunder.

Manners count so you do not speak to someone in a language he does not understand when you have a common language.
But hey, if all you've got is cheap political theatrics, you have to go with your strong suit and manners be damned.

Tit for tat?
Posted by: Kursk at May 6, 2009 5:05 PMWhat dictionary has a definition of bilingualism as the ability to speak french and english. Bilingualism is the ability to speak and understand any language that is not your native language.
I was working at Canada Customs when this farce was forced on Canada by PET and many of the officers were very upset. Most spoke at least two languages, including American Sign Language. They had cleared travellers in almost every language except french. They were not eligible for the bonus.
It is time to turn this thing around, and Mr Toews should answer any other questions in German or Spanish.
Shortly after this farce came into effect a car with 4 men from Quebec arrived at the Border, and demanded to be cleared in French. Ok said the inspector, pull your car over to the side and wait for a french speaking officer to arrive. We have phoned Calgary and he will be here in about 4 hours. Wait in your car, do not get out. It was a hot July day, and guess what, they changed their mind and spoke english and went on their way.
The public would be shocked at the undeclared items found because an officer spoke the language of the people coming back to Canada. If searched, they would speak their own language, where did you put the cigarettes or whatever. Items found, and usually when all was done the officer would say, in their language, thanks for your help.

Hey the LIEberals are upset that Toews didn't get his mistress to have an abortion. Then they could have called him a "baby killer." Remember Conservatives have horns on their heads.
I mean when you're trying to distract attention form Ruby Dhalla's "Nannygate" domestic workers abuse story.
Toews should have simply remarked:
"SCHWEINEHUNDE!"
and sent Pablo a tray of linked pork sausages.
This would have raised the question whether "Schweinehunde" is un-parliamentary language.
Pablo Rodriguez tilting at windmills.
Alternately, Toews could have asked whether Rodriguez speaks Spanglish?

While I can certainly get behind The Count wanting to see civility and truth transcend partisan mud slinging, however I can I no way support a "common purpose" with any transnationalist who wishes to degenerate national and individual sovereignty into a global village ideal. I often wonder is Iggy is a Canadian or running for leader of the Canadian province of the new global collective.
I get the distinct impression from his writing, that Iggy is at cross purposes with a sovereign Canada filled with independent citizens.

For your information Manitoba is not bilingual and New Brunswick is the only province that is bilingual.
Canada is not bilingual either and only the federal government is bilingual in that they offer services in two official languages.
We should all remember what Trudeau told Canadians when he advanced the official languages - Canadians were not expected to learn both French and English but know one language or the other. Also Trudeau idea of official bilingualism was to be confined to 13 Bilingual districts where numbers warranted it - Canadians were led down the garden path when they first accepted bilingualism and it has just creeped in more and more but Quebec were smart enough to protect themselves by passing legislation to make their province French.
In order for Trudeau to sell Bilingualism he passed multicultural legislation because bilingualism did not make sense in many provinces since French were outnumbered in big numbers by other languages and cultures so it made no sense not to recognize them, if you were going to recognize a real minority culture and language like the French in these provinces and areas. It made no sense and could not be sold that the French was a founding language and culture in western Canada because it was other languages and cultures that built that area of Canada and they could not be denied for their work and efforts over the years.
I think that our PM, Stephen Harper, supports the Creator Mr. Ikky.
Support for those of us who believe in Creator vs Darwin evolution is a welcome about turn for Liberanos though, I must say! This strong belief in the Creator shocked and pleased me, as I, too, have always believed that the Lord created the earth and all it's creatures - including Man.
'Support for creators' that would be a Capital 'C', for the information of the person who wrote this - out of respect for the Lord, Ikky and all of us who believe as Ikky claims here; that our world was created by God - it did not evolve from a ball of mud.
We finally have a person with some common sense in the Liberano party - who would have thought something like that could possibly happen?

Mr. Toews is a bigger man than the two simpletons who attacked him. Fools of this magnitude are best ignored.
Posted by: biffjr. at May 7, 2009 1:13 PMIt infuriates me to read the ridiculous comments of Iggy supporters and their "spin" on this. I think Mr. Toews and the Conservatives have every right to be angry about this.
I travelled east two summers ago and "drove" through Quebec....drove through because honestly we we were treated like strangers in our own Country. The drive through the small communities along the St. Lawrence were beautiful but at each tourist stop, we found only French...only French signage explaining what we were stopping to look at, only French brochures available at these stops in in the Tourism offices....I was even asked by some snotty nose French kid that "which country I was from"...to which I happily replied "that was be Canada".
I wonder how this all of this bilingualism works that Mr. Toews is assaulted because he doesn't speak BOTH of the offical languages when Quebec doesn't feel the need to use English.
It all makes me sick to be honest. I've been to Montreal years ago...when signage was allowed in both English and French. The people were wonderful. I won't go back...not after this last holiday. If there were a referendum tomorrow asking CANADIANS if we should keep or get rid of Quebec.....I think you know what my answer would be.

Posted by: Bestman at May 7, 2009 4:04 PMLet's see, the entire country becomes bilingual to appease Quebec.
Quebec then makes English illegal, and threatens to separate.
All high paying jobs in government, now go to bilinguals only...a huge economic advantage to Quebecers.
Quebec has a political stranglehold over the rest of Canada because of their party in parliament, dedicated to Canada's demise.
As our second most populous province, they have never managed to wean themselves from welfare payments from the rest of the country, through equalization.
Now our ministers are labelled as inadequate, because they don't speak a language used only in separatist Quebec, and appeasing Ottawa.
It's like children who never hear the word NO, they always turn into spoiled, unhappy, ingrates.
Forget a Quebec referendum on separation, wait for a Canadian referendum on Quebec's expulsion.
The official document enshrining the edict will be written in English.
