Imitation Is The Highest Form Of Flattery

Margaret Wente channels SDA;

Don't worry, people. There's no need for panic. Swine flu has reached the phase 5 alert level, which is bad but not disastrous. Barack Obama is on top of it. He has gone on TV to reassure us we don't need to close the schools yet, just some of them. He's banker-in-chief and car salesman-in-chief, and now he's the public health officer-in-chief. Is there nothing this man can't do?

And your point is?

Posted by: jose at April 30, 2009 10:35 AM

I believe the point is, this man Obama ( I use the term man loosely) thinks he knows whats best for everyone, the average joe (read you and me) aren't capable of rational thought. We can't decide how best to protect ourselves.

On a side note, I personally think this is being way overblown and I also believe we're being distracted from something far more important.

Posted by: Rick from AB at April 30, 2009 10:38 AM

Not much of a point, really.

Posted by: Blessed Virgin Mary at April 30, 2009 10:41 AM

blessed virgin mary:

First let me say I don't really think you are who you say you are hah. (couldn't resist)

If you don't get the point, then I can't help you. As it stands, I would have no problems going to Mexico today even, I bet theres some deals to be had at some resorts even if you had to drive down because the airlines aren't flying there.

Posted by: Rick from AB at April 30, 2009 10:50 AM

This appears to be another diversionary tactic by the Obama’s handlers.
The mass media is nothing but helpful to make the plebeians’ think of other things than trillions of dollars that they, their children, their children’s children ….. eventually will have to pay back.
Not to make light of death.
To put things in perspective, this morning on radio, there was a doctor that stated that there are some 35,000 people that die every year of influenza, did not catch if this applies to the US only or the globe.
So far the current “pandemic” hardly looks like it qualifies. It eventually may, though it does not now.

Posted by: Lev at April 30, 2009 10:51 AM

Lev Those are US figures. In Canada it varies from 4,000 to 11,000 depending on severity and how close the immunization is to the real virus.

Posted by: Speedy at April 30, 2009 10:56 AM

Here's the point, even highlighted for all to see.

Is there nothing this man can't do? Is there nothing Obama can't do?

That's been a theme on this blog, noticing how the MSM has elevated a lowly community organizer into the saviour of the world.

It means a phrase that's been used on this blog is being used by other writers.

Nothing more, nothing less.

Posted by: set you free at April 30, 2009 11:00 AM

So are Kate's two pointless commenters, above, going to take Joe's advice and not use public transit?

Posted by: andycanuck at April 30, 2009 11:02 AM

We don't have public transit in heaven. People get around on their own steam.

Posted by: Blessed Virgin Mary at April 30, 2009 11:08 AM

This is the perfect news story.

It has a memorable name. It costs the media next to nothing to cover it. They can generate big ratings numbers for a non-story.

How many people have died in Canada this week from swine flu? 0?

How many have died this week from regular old everyday flu? Well if this is near normal that would be 60 to 80.

Posted by: AtlanticJim at April 30, 2009 11:11 AM

The POINT is that Kate is a gifted artist, and highly original wordsmith and phrase-maker -- a humourist.
"Is there nothing Obama can't do" is one of those phrase-hits. Obviously, Wente, herself a gifted consevative writer, reads sda. Kate wasn't being critical of Wente here.

Other "greatest hits":

- Not waiting for the asteroid.
- You're supposed to pray for an asteroid, not pick sides.
- Tony Blair's Britain.
- The Sound of Settled Science.

These are all Kate originals. They make me SMILE -- a lot. I'm not a smiler. My passport pic looks like a Lebanese terrorist 'cos they told me not to smile.

Margaret Wente is one of the few columnists who pushes the suffocating banality blanket at the Globe and Mail.

To paraphrase Mark Steyn, the non-business sections of the Grope and Flail is like the New York Times without the jokes.

And now this crap. Go find another blog to troll. You're becoming altogether too pathetic to deal with.

" ... And your point is?

Point is :
1) MSM plagarism
2) The MSM , many of whom have been on a perpetual ant-Bush witch for the last 8 years , and who now publish absolute praise of Obama as though he is the second coming of Christ, no matter what his administration screws up.

Posted by: Brian at April 30, 2009 11:21 AM

Have you heard about the government's new primary concern dealing with "swine flu"? They are very worried about how the name of the virus is affecting the economy, so they are trying to change the name. It's ridiculous..take a look.

I wish just one of Canada's vast female newspersons( preferably one is who not dating a Liberal strategist) would channel some of this:

I am not at liberty to divulge the details, except to mention the procedure's terror-inducing name: "the ladybug."

Normal human beings -- especially those who grew up with my older brother, Jimmy -- can't read the interrogation memos without laughing.

All I could do was groan, and roll my eyes watching The Obama Show last night. During his opening comments in talking about the swine flu, he urged all us great unwashed masses to make sure we wash our hands.

Yes, Dear Leader.

Posted by: Blessed Virgin Mary at April 30, 2009 11:51 AM

Margaret Wente has made a practice of taking material from conservative blogs and columns and rewriting it for the Blubb and Wail. Christie Blatchford (before she joined the Blubb), Mark Steyn, etc. were all grist for her mill. Given the lack of attribution one might question Wente's ethics, but it has been a useful way for getting non-PC facts and views into the MSM.

Anyway, Kate, you're in very good company.

They have had a free reign of it since the Printing Press came on the scene in the 1640s.

Nothing inspires like the threat of redundancy and competition. And seeing their own customers exposed to the truth.

And I don't mean the Virgin Mary, I mean the blaspheming leftist troll, obviously male, and obviously still a virgin.

Posted by: Mohammed at April 30, 2009 12:13 PM

Glad to see Wente turning things around a bit and rejoining reality as she at one time shilled for all the phantom conservative bigwigs wanting to turf Harper over the $1.95 koup.

Posted by: Agent Smith at April 30, 2009 12:55 PM

jose, the 'point' was in the first paragraph of Wente's article. Did you read that far, or do you balk after the headline?

Just to show you how much this is hype, I've attended the hospital with pretty high fevers 3 x's recently.
Each time they sent me home, telling me to take tylenor, which I have and still am.
(only blood in the urine, so no big deal apparently)
Am taking levquine, for the third time (not working obviously).
So I've traveled to hospitals/clinics looking for the cause/relief, (no family dr) in Ottawa and elsewhere.
Puked in parking lots and other locations in the last week and a half and still must do some essential shopping.
So how serious are CDN authorities here taking this bug?
Not at all I'd say, which tells me it's all hype.
I may have a flu bug or not or maybe the flu and something else but no one has tested or quarantined me or even suggested it. We are all but a joke to be toyed with by the MSM.

Posted by: any flu = pandemic panic for MSM business at April 30, 2009 1:18 PM

I just found this quotation on Lucianne.com It's a good point, I think:

'Which has killed more people, the Mexican pig flu or the Mexican drugs wars? Which gets the most press from the Great Liberal Pandemonium Machine, the MSM?'

Exactly, clipper !!

Posted by: ron in kelowna at April 30, 2009 1:25 PM

I think I understand now why Barry O'Bama has left all those hundreds of bureaucratic posts unfilled, including the Director of Centers for Disease Control: he can 'fill in' the job himself, on a whim, following the path of his own desire. He doesn't have to waste time persuading an appointee or career bureaucrat on the merits of his ideas. He doesn't have to share the spotlight with someone else -- he can be the solitary hero, fixing the world.

And if something goes wrong, it won't be his fault. He can blame the Republicans for slowing down his appointment process, thus denying him the top-notch people who would otherwise have carried out a perfectly-executed solution.

However, he won't be able to 'not fill in the posts' indefinitely, so it's just a matter of time before the show trials start.

B. Hussein Obama, meet J. Vissarionovich Stalin.

Wonder when she starts juxtaposing?

John Lewis: Re: "Given the lack of attribution one might question Wente's ethics," -- good grief, I don't think one has to attribute a turn of phrase. Clever phrases simply make their way into the language. I am also pleased to see someone in MSM picking up on Conservative views and making them more broadly available. Wente is unique, I think. Her perspective is most often based on common sense, which is perhaps why some would see her views as Conservative. She does seem to often get a reaction out of those on the Left.

Come on be fair. The man has to keep trying until he finds something he can do right. Many bright individuals failed before they succeeded. Then again they didn't screw up an entire country while they tried.

Posted by: Speedy at April 30, 2009 4:09 PM

Why are lefties so crude and disrespectful, resorting to insults resembling what a four -twelve year old would have as a response to a perceived threat? My guess is a limited vocabulary and/or frontal lobe damage. I am positive that habitually believing lies renders one incapable of a mature discussion. Lies, when kept in the brain long enough, eat away your grey matter.

From what I have heard-did not watch the BO show-his great advice was "wash your hands" in response to the -coming to a city near you - swine flu pandemic. Isn't that what pilate did b4 he crucified Christ?
