Reader Tips

Good evening, welcome to the Wednesday Edition of SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, in keeping with the political season, we present for your enjoyment and consideration a song, from Bob Dylan's 1983 album Infidels, which warns of the guy with the "harmonious tongue" who emerges from nowhere to "catch you when your troubles feel like they weigh a ton."

Here it is, then: Bob Dylan's Man Of Peace.

The thread is open for your Reader Tips.

Please send a couple of sentences or a paragraph to the troops on the Write to the Troops section of the site www.forces.gc.ca. There are fewer and fewer messages unless someone is killed or wounded. It takes little effort to send a brief description of the weather here or how you appreciate their dedication and it means so much.

Even a joke (clean!) or a short poem is great. You can also add a few French words if you want.

http://www.juandemariana.org/pdf/090327-employment-public-aid-renewable.pdf

Study of the effects on employment of public aid to renewable energy sources.

* The U.S. can expect 2.2 jobs to be destroyed for every 1 renewable job financed by the government.

* Only 1 in 10 of the jobs actually created through green investment is permanent.

* Since 2000, Spain has spent €571,138 ($753,778) to create each “green job,” including subsidies of more than €1 million ($1,319,783) per wind industry job.

* Those programs resulted in the destruction of nearly 113,000 jobs elsewhere in the economy.

* Each “green” megawatt installed destroyed 5.39 jobs in non-energy sectors of the Spanish economy.

* The total over-cost—the amount paid over the cost that would result from buying the electricity generated by the renewable power plants at market prices—between 2000 and 2008 amounts to 7,918.54 million Euros ($10 billion).

* The total subsidy spent and committed to these three renewable sources amounts to €28,671 million ($36 billion).

* Consumer energy costs in Spain would have to be increased 31 percent to repay the debt generated by the green jobs subsidies.

Interesting, wonder if the conclusions this study makes are true.

For your late nite enjoyment: Kurt Weill's "It Never Was You"--a grown up love song done by a grown up singer (Anne Kerry Ford). Lovely and haunting, wonderfully sung. For mature audiences only, in the best possible sense.

" We were in total love mode. For his part, Mr Obama stared at Mr Brown with two weary, slightly glazed eyes, his mouth agape.

When Mr Brown let him get a word in, it was 'Gordon' this and 'Gordon' that. Mr Brown had by now turned his profile to us and it meant we could see the silhouette of his pouchy-cheeked, greedy grin. His lips puckered, forming the shape of a robin's beak, and he nodded slowly, repeatedly, at times even swallowing, so much was he salivating.

When he turned back to face us his eyes were narrow with creamy pleasure and he pushed forth his chin, stretching his lower neck. Now he placed his hands behind his back and bounced a half inch or so on the balls of his feet, relishing the sound of Solomon Obama's replies to a few questions from the Press"

"Barrack Obama kept saying that he was going to be the new agent of change, but he never told us in which direction he was going to change. It turns out he maintained he was going to make everything worse. Everybody assumed 'change, what a brilliant idea!' They didn't know that he meant it's going to get worse and worse every day.

"And not only that, he's going to be proud of how he makes it worse -- do you ever see him looking unhappy about it? Every part of the economy has gotten worse, and do you notice that the worse it gets the happier he looks?"

batb - yeah, sure. Actually, apparently the Queen always gives a framed photograph of herself and the Duke to visiting dignitaries. So - that was her gift.

But for Obama, the narcissist, to give a 'gift' of an ipod and his speeches - that's pretty revealing. His focus is on himself. Not America.

Robert W - protesters want to protest. That's as far as it goes. I doubt if they know the definitions of 'capitalism' or 'globalism' or even care. Their focus is the protest.

Posted by: bryanr at April 2, 2009 10:33 AM

I'm aware, ET, that she did give a signed photo to the Obamas, but she also gave them the list of gifts I mention above. The Obamas, apparently, also gave the Queen and Prince Philip a Rogers and Hart Songbook (hey, I love Rogers and Hart, not a bad gift), but the point I was making was the impertinence of the CBC to make the Royals a butt of a bad -- and dishonest -- joke. Canadians listening to the CBC would think that the signed photo was the ONLY thing the Windsors gave the Obamas. As it turns out, the Queen was wonderfully thoughtful and generous in the gifts she gave the First Family.

As much as anything, I as a 7th-generation Canadian, whose forebears are all British, am heartily weary of my heritage being considered of no account by the anti-British flunkies at the publicly funded CBC. They who tout equality and all things "multicultural" pretty much always relegate the British culture of millions of Canadians to the back of the multi-culti bus.

Enough, already.

Posted by: batb at April 2, 2009 10:43 AM

bryanr, I just heard the news on the CBC and guess what they reported?

That Prime Minister Stephen Harper had missed the photo shoot because, as reported by the British press, he had been "in the loo."

Does anyone think in a million years that if Iggy, Paul Martin, Chretien, or Trudeau had missed something because they were "in the loo" it would have been reported? Not a chance.

I'm disgusted, fed up, appalled, and dismayed by the treatment of our Prime Minister by the Canadian MSM. They have no respect for the office of Prime Minister, which pi**es me off to no end. Neither do they have respect for the Canadians who elected Stephen Harper and his CPC. They might well keep this in mind as their viewership continues to tank and they start laying off employees from their bloated work force.

"John Baird and Colin Kenny: Men of action

When's the last time you've heard of a politician, of any stripe, actually getting down and dirty in investigating a problem?

I mean, if there's a disaster, politicians will take helicopter rides over the affected areas. Or in the case of a governmental mishap, he'll appear at the press conference to promise a response.

But men or women of action? Real action? They are few and far between. Not just among politicians, but all of us.

So with that in mind, let's visit the story of John Baird and Colin Kenny:

Two men in baseball caps and windbreakers breached the perimeter of Pearson International Airport on Sunday. Stepping out of a van on a public roadway, then passing through doorways they spent half an hour lingering around the tarmac.

They spoke to airport workers, but faced no questions as to what credentials they had used to gain access to one of Canada's most important transportation hubs. If anyone had bothered to ask, they might have been shocked.

One of the visitors was federal Transport Minister John Baird. The other was Colin Kenny, the Liberal who chairs the Senate's national security committee. On that rainy afternoon they decided to leave their partisanship behind in Ottawa to fly to Toronto to check on airport security themselves.

What they found alarmed them.

What they found, of course, is two unauthorized individuals on the tarmac ..."

"Pearson security review ordered

Airport security review ordered after 'security breach'

Transport Minister John Baird is slamming "unacceptable" security at Pearson International Airport after he was able to walk unchallenged onto the airport tarmac during a weekend visit.

A clearly unhappy Baird today warned the Greater Toronto Airports Authority, the airport's operator, to take the security breach seriously.

"There were doors that were unlocked, no security present that would allow anyone from the street to be able to walk in," Baird told reporters.

"What I saw was simply unacceptable. And if the Toronto airport authority doesn't share that view, that causes me even more concern," Baird said.

And Senator Colin Kenny, who joined Baird in the test of airport security, had even harsher words for the airport authority, calling on the agency to get "off its ass" and step up vigilance.

"The bottom line is they have been doing a lousy job in security at the airport," he said in an interview.

Baird and Kenny, the chair of the Senate's national security committee, said they visited the airport Sunday, and were able to walk unchallenged through an unlocked door and onto the tarmac, where they spent half an hour taking pictures and talking to workers.

Although both men had been given security passes, Kenny said they were never asked to show them.

In a statement released this morning, the GTAA said it is "concerned with the characterization of this incident as a security breach since the Senator and the Minister were issued passes and were under the supervision of the RCMP."

But Baird said the RCMP officers were about 200 metres behind the two politicians and said no one could have thought the two men were being properly escorted in the secure area.

The GTAA today pointed the finger of blame at the RCMP officers assigned to accompany the politicians, saying they "did not maintain visual contact at all times."

As a result, the GTAA said it has revoked the escort privileges of those officers.

But that response sparked a sharp rebuke from Baird, who said, "it's never good to blame the messenger."

Baird said he intends to meet with the management of the Greater Toronto airports authority next week to drive home his concerns with their operation.

"It's essential for me to meet with the operators of the airport. Their reaction is not acceptable," he said.

Baird said he had a good visit with airport personnel and a tour of baggage handling area.

"We also saw some good security where some of the buildings on base were locked solid. . . we also saw things that weren't acceptable. We're committed to take real action on that," Baird said.

"As a minister, it's my job to identify shortcomings and to tackle them," he said."

"Cowardly Whites Fail Again: Officer Powell Resigns

In stark, raving fear of the black race (and white liberal attorneys), the Dallas Police Department has apparently pressured Officer Robert Powell into resigning. The young, three-year veteran officer accosted a car for running a red light. The car happened to be occupied by several of black people. The rest is history. “A nation of cowards,” black Attorney General Eric Holder said.

Naturally, the important information is withheld from the public. What has Officer Powell’s experience been in the past in similar circumstances? What influenced his conduct, if anything, beyond the minimal, professional responsibility he executed, if anything was actually unreasonable or unlawful, or even discourteous?

“My mother is dying!” This desperate plea was supposed to nullify all the previous experience and training of Powell. This cry was to trump all other considerations, all law, written or customary. This was to throw out all protocol for the safety of the officer and the those accosted.

Officer Powell, of course, did not know that the motorists included NFL player, Houston Texans running back Ryan Moats. (Moats did not make an issue of that.) Nor did he have any evidence that anything they said was true. The only evidence he had was that the driver had broken the law. He acted accordingly. He did his job. He didn’t search anyone for drugs, however. How courteous. He didn’t search anyone for weapons. How brave. He didn’t even search the car. How positively kind.

For this, the world demands his resignation. He dared insult a black family."

"Her Royal Highness bequeathed to the Obamas one of the earliest known copies of William Shakespeare's Henry V. She also presented him with the framed orginal sheet music of John Newton's "Amazing Grace." To the Obama daughters, the Queen gave a dollhouse-sized replica of Windsor Castle with a functioning train station ... They also received a prize Shetland pony. Mrs. Obama was given a ruby ring commissioned and worn by Queen Victoria."

So what that the ring was "commissioned and worn by Queen Victoria"? Do you know how much jewelry the Queen owns? Her giving Michelle Obama this ring would be akin to Imelda Marcos giving her a pair of shoes.

It was ONE of the earliest known copies of Shakespeare's Henry V. 'Lots where that came from.

As for the Shetland pony and Windsor Castle replica: Why not? The Queen's a horse expert and owns a ton of them, ponies too, one would presume, and the Windsor Castle replica with working train would be right up her alley. Have you ever seen her and Princess Margaret's doll house in Kensington Palace? Working chandeleirs and everything.

I see no evidence that this list is a hoax. Please furnish evidence that it is or withdraw your claim!

jema54, I was being facetious, but Berlusconi is hardly a paragon of virtue. From wiki:

In 1965 he married Carla Elvira Dall'Oglio, and they had two children: Maria Elvira, better known as Marina (born 1966), and Pier Silvio (b. 1968). By 1980, Berlusconi had established a relationship with the actress Veronica Lario (born Miriam Bartolini), with whom he subsequently had three children: Barbara (b. 1984), Eleonora (b. 1986) and Luigi (b. 1988). He was divorced from Dall'Oglio in 1985, and married Lario in 1990. At this time, Berlusconi was a well-known entrepreneur, and his wedding was a notable social event. One of his best men was former Prime Minister and leader of the Italian Socialist Party Bettino Craxi.

ET, I'm still waiting for verification that the Henry V, music of Amazing Grace, the Shetland pony, and the replica of Windsor Castle were NOT given to the Obamas by the Windsors.

And, yes, I "seriously think" that these are the gifts the Queen of England gave to the President of the United States and his family. Just a signed photo of herself would be an insult. She's a phenomenally wealthy woman, so these gifts would not be out of her range at all. As I mentioned above, she's got more jewels than she knows what to do with. What better purpose to put one of her less spectacular gems to than provide some historical BLING to Michelle Obama?

You're always asking for proof of people's opinions, so it seems only equitable that you provide proof that the Queen's gift list is "a hoax," as you put it. Otherwise, my gullibility is in question, n'est-ce pas?

Vitruvius, you might add why you presume that the gift list is a hoax.

batb - the list hasn't been given as an official statement. The only official mention of a gift was the traditional one that the Queen always gives to visiting dignitaries and heads of state - a picture of herself and the Duke of Edinburgh. The Queen does not give gifts (while the PM might do so).

The list is specious and yes, your gullibility is in question. Do you seriously think that the Queen gives such gifts to each visiting head of state?

A pony? How do they get it back? Where do they keep it?

And there is no reason to give any jewel, not one single one, that belonged to Queen Victoria, to anyone. Those jewels aren't hers to give away; they belong to the heritage of the British Crown and the British people.

So, yes, I think you've been gullible. This list, including the list of the Obama's gifts (M&M candies, a signed copy of his book, etc)..were an April Fools joke.

OK, I'm gullible!

On the other hand, I find nothing amusing about making an April Fool's joke about what the Queen and/or Obama didn't actually give one another, especially as making the Queen the butt of this kind of joke is rather unfunny. She's an easy target, so I don't find any joke made at her expense very amusing.

And, on the OTHER hand, the real joke -- and it's a bad one -- is Obama's gift of an i-pod to the Queen! As you point out, only a narcissist could have pulled that one off!
