Asian Achievement Week at the University of Saskatchewan;
Posted by Kate at March 27, 2009 7:58 PMYou can participate in this very special week by attending any class taught by an Asian professor or by raising relevant and non-relevant Asian issues (such as the evolution of DDR) in your classes (regardless of their subjects), being EXTRA proud of being Asian, perhaps by asking out that shy asian girl from class, or just high-fiving some asian dude in the Arts Tunnel.

DescriptionIn the name of human equality, it is necessary to provide a week of recognition for ALL ethnicities represented at the University of Saskatchewan.
March 22nd to 29th is a week to recognize the achievements of Asian people in Saskatchewan. Many physicians, engineers, professors, business owners, and other prominent people in Saskatchewan are of Asian descent.
You can participate in this very special week by attending any class taught by an Asian professor or by raising relevant and non-relevant Asian issues (such as the evolution of DDR) in your classes (regardless of their subjects), being EXTRA proud of being Asian, perhaps by asking out that shy asian girl from class, or just high-fiving some asian dude in the Arts Tunnel.
Also, if you don't do it, you are a racist.
Posted by: cal2 at March 27, 2009 8:20 PMToo funny.
Wanna bet on this fellow's major? Engineering, Physics, Medicine? Or English, Poli-Sci, Sociology?
And why can't we all get a very special week?
Actually, this is the relevant portion:

They're being sarcastic.
Posted by: Phil at March 27, 2009 8:37 PMTo friggin stupid to even comment on.Yup.Slap that Asian dude, and get kicked out.Or better yet,ask that "shy little Asian gal out",and see how her gang reacts. ALL non- scientific studies should hve to pay triple tuition,to help fund the sciences, engineering, etc.Let's see how many Taliban Jack's we get out of these so called institutes of higher learning then!

Posted by: Justthinkin at March 27, 2009 8:38 PMSo Asian girls are shy eh? Never heard of that stereotype before.
Than again, I didn't know Chinese people put cat in their restaurant food, and that the cat resembled pork, until the leader of the Liberal party of Canada Michael Ignatieff's chief political organizer and Rovianesque operative, Warren Kinsella, told me so on youtube.
The things you learn from ol' lefty. I feel both enlightened and amused, heh.
Posted by: Glenn at March 27, 2009 8:38 PMOpppsssss...sorry about double post.Guess my white guilt can't tell when to stop.
Posted by: Justthinkin at March 27, 2009 8:40 PMPlease don't take this the wrong way, but, ye gads, you Canadians are weird Is it the cold weather? The short winter days? Such a grim, determined pursuit of universal "brotherhood".
Posted by: RSP at March 27, 2009 8:41 PMI like the initiative. There should also be Italian, Irish and Greek Appreciation weeks. Why just Aboriginal?
Posted by: kdl at March 27, 2009 8:45 PMSo, when is German week, or will we just wake up one day and be in the middle of it?
Posted by: billypaintbrush at March 27, 2009 8:54 PMI think a German Achievement Week would be swell.
Posted by: Kate at March 27, 2009 8:57 PMI must be sick or something because I think that billypaintbrush's comment borders on brilliant.
Posted by: John at March 27, 2009 9:06 PMWHOOOOSH.
That was the sound of the point flying well over the heads of almost all the previous commentors.
Keep it up guys!
Posted by: Yukon Gold at March 27, 2009 9:08 PMNot all Asians were created equal, according to my girlfriend. She's from southern China, and she's a racist. She's quite proud of it. We have some very lively debates about who invented stuff, and whose kung fu is more powerful.
To the best of my knowledge, she's never fed me cat meat. Not that I'd complain. The way Chinese prepare meat, it might as well be cat.
Posted by: dp at March 27, 2009 9:12 PMThere is the going to be a discussion about the evolution of the DDR--the former East Germany. This was when Europe ended west of the Elbe River and Asia started east of Lubeck, West Germany.
Sorry, Dorothy. You're not in Karl Marx Stadt anymore.
Posted by: Allahbama Joe at March 27, 2009 9:14 PMDid anyone go to the link?
I don't see any comments on the profile pic.
Posted by: Fred at March 27, 2009 9:15 PMI'm Asian, and I'm amused and offended by this stupid event.
Posted by: BigFire at March 27, 2009 9:16 PMI'm seriously trying to figure out which is funnier, the facebook entry or these comments.
Posted by: Yukon Gold at March 27, 2009 9:23 PMThat was flying over with four engines, Yukon. Possibly six. That'd make it an Antonov.
When is Scots week, and will there be haggis? We invented the frickin' telephone y'know. Bwaha!
Posted by: The Phantom at March 27, 2009 9:27 PM"We invented the frickin' telephone y'know."
Along with curling, profit, and men who can wear wool next to the skin.
Posted by: Kate at March 27, 2009 9:39 PMDDR? What does Double Data Rate memory have to do with this? Is this like twin spirits?
I liked university better when Engineers fired miniature canons, put nekkid ladies on horses and wandered the halls looking for beer(or fellow engineers with beer).
Posted by: Texas Canuck at March 27, 2009 10:16 PMThe art of taking the piss is not lost. Let's all give Michael two thumbs up and follow his example.
Posted by: Tenebris at March 27, 2009 10:24 PMCloser to the end of the year do you think they might have time to slip in an Appreciate a White Anglo Saxon week??
Posted by: Rob C at March 27, 2009 10:40 PMJust what have you got against human decency, Rob C?
Posted by: Black Mamba at March 27, 2009 10:46 PMI'm waiting for Dutch Achievement week...
Wait, that would probably be more like just an afternoon
or perhaps we can just do it Thursday over lunch.
Is it against "THE RULES" to be appreciated and white
Posted by: Rob C at March 27, 2009 10:59 PMKate, you should know that a Macmillan invented the pedal bicycle.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottish_inventions
Ne'er mind yer wee bloody week. Scots Appreciation MONTH. Wi' a Highland Appreciation Fortnight in it.
Posted by: The Phantom at March 27, 2009 11:10 PMI think the Anglo-Saxons have achieved too much to need an Anchievement Week.
Achievement, even.
Asians, now: Do they mean Orientals or Subcontinentals? Because frankly, neither of them need an Achievement Week either. But I do NOT recommend "asking out that shy asian girl" if she happens to be Pakistani. The shy ones have the assertive brothers.

"So, when is German week, or will we just wake up one day and be in the middle of it?"
We'll let you know. In the meantime, you would be prudent to ask fewer impertinent questions.
Kate:
"I think a German Achievement Week would be swell."
Correct. But only one week? Guess again, Fraulein.

Posted by: Fred at March 28, 2009 12:46 AMGermans are unfairly stereotyped as being humourless, dour, unspontaneous and robotic.
Nothing could be further from truth! We Germans love to laugh and tell jokes.
The following mirthful example will serve to dispell this unfortunate myth.
Joke No. 001:
Q: Why was the blonde fired from the M&Ms factory?
A: Repeated absence and stealing.
Posted by: rg at March 28, 2009 1:07 AMWhen I click on the link all I get is a face book log in screen. I don't use face book and it will be a frosty friday in hell before I do.
However, judging by the comments, when do I get my Red Neck Racist Appreciation day?
Dave.
Posted by: Dave_RoA at March 28, 2009 2:45 AMBeing Aboriginal, I tend to wonder how they can possibly have an aboriginal achievement week. I know they mean well, but aboriginal achievement seems like a bit of an oxymoron. Some of us are nice people, but just not high on the achievement scale.
Sort of like having a Rosie O'Donnell School of Beauty.
Posted by: dan at March 28, 2009 2:51 AMI do understand the point of having an Asian Achievement week as a protest to Native Achievement Weak. I propose the following to emphasize the positive attributes of aboriginals:
They could have a French Achievement Week. Highlights include:
- no bathing or showers allowed during the week.
- ladies armpit hair growing contest
- the theme song could be 'Surrender' by Cheap Trick
- Jerry Lewis film festival
- White flag raising ceremony
German appreciation week! Wunderbarl!
..but first we annex the U of S
My grandpa loved the prairies..said it was perfect tank country..
Posted by: Kursk at March 28, 2009 3:54 AMGerman acheivement week is called Oktoberfest. I think its the best ethnic week, and anyone can't see why, three words: meat and beer.
(or beer and meat)
Posted by: langmann at March 28, 2009 8:06 AM"vould you like to hear the sound of sleigh bells Colonel Klink ? "coming at you on ze russian front"
With apologies to general Burkhalter.
I heard someone say something recently about all the "visible minorities" in Toronto. Excuse me, but as a white person of mostly English, Irish & Scottish descent, I now belong to the smallest visible minority group in this city.
As so often happens, last night at the food court in the Eaton Centre and on the TTC, I felt like I had left Canada and been transported to another country (say, a more racially integrated China). Where have all the white people gone? It's like there was a genocide when no one was paying attention. (The genocide of low birth rates for various reasons.)
My grandchildren are going to have to lobby for Scottish, Irish, English, German and Swiss appreciation week because they will be the minority and, if the UK is any indication, our achievements, our substantial contributions to civilization, will be minimized in history class.
Posted by: Josephine at March 28, 2009 11:54 AMAnd one wonders when Canadian appreciation week is.
Still we should give the asians credit for splitting the atom, discovering the laws of gravity, putting man on the moon, breaking the speed of sound, inventing the internal combustion engine, steam engines, oh wait that was the evil Europeans.
Well maybe give them credit for gun powder and go kill lunch.
Posted by: dinosaur at March 28, 2009 12:26 PMJust what asian girls need, more of us white guys asking them out.
Posted by: tim in vermont at March 28, 2009 12:45 PMEvery week is Anglo-Saxon Achievement week.
Posted by: Mark at March 28, 2009 1:31 PMGerman Appreciation week?
Already exists, it's in October.
You might know it by it's more common name.
OKTOBERFEST!!!
Posted by: Chris S. at March 28, 2009 1:47 PMI found the Facebook post hilarious when I first read it and joined about two weeks ago. I find many of the comments here hilarious, too. It's a joke, folks, a tongue in cheek bit of sarcasm showing that all too rare ability to laugh at one's self and one's own racial stereotypes. I had expected more insightful comments from the Rodent Nation, and I wish we had more University students with a predisposition to not take themselves too seriously, or to use intelligent humour to make a point. And by the way, DDR is Dance Dance Revolution.
Posted by: First Timer at March 28, 2009 2:22 PMThey should have a "hug a Islamist day" . See how that goes.
Tired of these race baiters pretending care.
It's a parody. Thanks to those of you who made informed comments, or at least those who understand the concept of sarcasm.
Posted by: Michael Lett at March 28, 2009 3:48 PMIf by Asian Achievement Week you mean a Choi Min-Sik movie marathon, then play on. Give me excess of it.
Posted by: Osumashi Kinyobe at March 28, 2009 4:02 PMI love it, Michael. Great work
Posted by: Rob Huck at March 28, 2009 7:24 PMHere at the GoC, Asian Heritage Week is all too real. Too easy for me to miss the joke. Also Black History Month (shouldn't that be 'African-Canadian' History Month?), Aboriginal Awareness Week, Women's Week (or month, I don't remember). We get tacky stands in our lobby where we guilt-ridden whites get to buy their beads, eat crappy food and be berated by guest speakers. So much fun.
Posted by: Colin at March 29, 2009 10:07 AMThe cultural and moral arrogance from these shallow little elitist quislings is absolutely toxic.
What in the hell makes these stuck up little twits think that Asian people even need their shallow superficial moral support? I think Asian people are fully capable of doing just fine on their own without the fawning sycophancy of Milquetoast liberal larvae.
Posted by: WL Mackenzie Redux at March 29, 2009 10:45 AMCareful Redux, you wouldn't want to pop a blood vessel on your forehead.
This is kind of a new thing for me. I've never been called an 'elitist quisling'. Thanks for that.
