Americans Went To The Polls For "Change"

... and all they got was the lousy Green Shift.

I've searched their websites and Google News. If the CBC or Globe&Mail managed to squeeze this little item between the Shock!! and Outrage!! coverage of Fox News late-late-night, and the religious beliefs of Canada's science minister, I can't find it.

But that's why you have blogs - to do the jobs Canadian media won't do.

Energy Secretary Steven Chu on Tuesday advocated adjusting trade duties as a "weapon" to protect U.S. manufacturing, just a day after one of China's top climate envoys warned of a trade war if developed countries impose tariffs on carbon-intensive imports.

Mr. Chu, speaking before a House science panel, said establishing a carbon tariff would help "level the playing field" if other countries haven't imposed greenhouse-gas-reduction mandates similar to the one President Barack Obama plans to implement over the next couple of years. It is the first time the Obama administration has made public its view on the issue.

"If other countries don't impose a cost on carbon, then we will be at a disadvantage...[and] we would look at considering perhaps duties that would offset that cost," Mr. Chu said.

So, everything old is new again...

Contrary to popular belief, Herbert Hoover was no fan of the free market or small government. After the stock market crashed in 1929, Hoover engaged in unprecedented peacetime deficit spending and other measures that increased the role of the federal government in the economy. Arguably, the most detrimental of his actions was the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930, which sharply hiked taxes on thousands of imports.

The National Post caught it, though. "Smoot-Hawley on steroids"

The term "weapon" is entirely appropriate because such a policy would not "level the playing field," as Mr. Chu seems to imagine, but bomb it. Carbon tariffs have been lurking like Somali pirates on the policy horizon for quite a while, and "carbon equivalency fees" for imports were part of the climate change bill introduced by President Obama last week in Congress."

Ironic, isn't it? Stéphane Dion ran in Canada, got elected in the US.

If only there were a way that Obama voters could go off to live in the world they think they want by themselves, leaving the rest of us alone to make money.

Obama just said yesterday that he is against trade barriers. I knew he was lying yesterday, and this article just confirms it again.

I must have missed the segment where he said this:

"Obama administration officials also agree that developed countries need to help to finance the technology transfer for low carbon energy and efficiency measures."

I wish there was some way to easily identify those that voted for Obama. They should not be let off the hook down the road for neglecting to inform themselves about who they were voting for. There is no excuse, it's the information age and these people ignored BO's history. Most of these people may not yet know what they've voted for, but they will, and they will deny their part in this debacle.

There is no surprise here Obama said quite plainly when speaking about existing and future trade...

“The truth is trade is here to stay,” Obama said, “and that if we have strong labor and environmental protections in our agreements, and if our trading partners are playing by the rules, trade can be a good thing for our workers and our economy.” (Barack Obama speech to Building Trades Conference, 4/15/08)

Why do people seem to be surprised that this is his Administration's positions?

Well, its all Hope and Change, isn't it? Hope y'all can still afford food after we get done Changing the rules.

Ammunition shortage shows no sign of ending either.

Seen this little tipbit yet Kate?

Link: http://www.muslimworldtoday.com/bailout13.htm

Snippet: But in bailing out Citigroup, the American taxpayer isn't simply bailing out Prince Alaweed Bin Talal's bank, who actually increased his stake at the end of 2008 when investors were jumping overboard, or protecting the investment of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority. We're also engaging in a 300 billion dollar plus bailout of Sharia finance. Because Citigroup's Islamic Banking operation represents the world's leading of Islamic loans and Sukuk bonds.

Citigroup pioneered the big bank embrace of Sharia finance back in the 90's. Citigroup co-launched the Dow Jones Sukuk bond index in 2006. Citigroup continues to help bring Sharia finance across the world with its wholly owned subsidiary, the Citi Islamic Investment Bank.

And the terrorist connections aren't hard to find either. Citi Islamic Investment Bank is overseen by "eminent" Sharia scholars. For example Nazih Hammad, President of Citi Islamic Investment Bank's Sharia board. Nazih Hammad is a board member of the North American Fiqh Council

Would it be ironic if the boxed set of American movies given as a third rate gift/afterthought to the Prime Minister of Britian on the occasion of his visit to the, Whitehouse included Ferris Bueller's Day Off ?

It shows that Chu isn't at Commerce (and was speaking to a "science panel" rather that one of the Commerce committes).

Fortunately he also has exactly zero power to enact legislation or affect trade, without Congress going along.

I think a lot of Congress might not quite be stupid enough to gut the economy to "stop carbon".

But I fear they might be.

"Most of these people may not yet know what they've voted for, but they will, and they will deny their part in this debacle."

You are assuming that these people have enough functioning gray matter to recognize a clusterf*ck when they see it.

That is a rather large assumption.

"Obama's pick for No. 2 spot at EPA withdraws

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama's pick for the No. 2 post at the Environmental Protection Agency is removing himself from consideration.

Jon Cannon, a professor of environmental law at the University of Virginia, says he is withdrawing as the nominee for deputy EPA administrator because of scrutiny surrounding the America's Clean Water Foundation. Cannon once served on the now-defunct organization's board of directors.

The EPA's inspector general's concluded in 2007 that the foundation mismanaged $25 million in EPA grants."

Biff

I do think there are a lot of "soccer moms" and "metro sexuals"(and others I've missed) that are not interested in how the world works. These are the people that eat up BO's nonsense because intuitively it sounds correct. Intuition will be overridden when the tangible effects of BO's efforts are felt, and self preservation will kick in.

People who depend on the govenment to sustain their jobs can not be turned, but make no mistake, they are not stupid. They've been corrupted, and they are hoping the "croc eats them last". At this time they are still the minority.JMO

BTW, if we are going the way of the commie, then I would at least like to be a communist country that uses force to take resources and money from other countries. Throw in 72 virgins and 72 muzzles and you’ve got a deal.

“When in Rome” right?

Just kidding;)

It's going to be a loooong four years. Hopefully it won't take more than ten or fifteen years for America to recover after he's out of office.

Posted by: EBD at March 25, 2009 7:37 PM

It deserves repeating every day: America will rue the day it elected the socialist leftist Barack Obama.

Well I hope as one of the majority holder of TOLUS's debt is a willing dance partner. Speaking of which I think I need to buy a bucket of coal for this weekend's festivities. Maybe some mellows over some glowing embers.

Posted by: bverwey at March 25, 2009 8:40 PM

Stupid is as stupid does.

It's really quite amazing, that The Anointed One is on the one hand, more and more dependent upon the Chinese to finance his out-of-control, drunk as a sailor spending habits, yet, then wants to give the smackdown on Chinese imports (the largest trading partner, as of lately), for their 'carbon footprint'.

Talk about biting the hand that feeds ya! Is Obamaton really that naive and stupid? Seems so.

These clowns keep saying they have to try stuff to see what works. I wonder what they plan to call this plan? I hear Smoot-Hawley is available.

Everything in the US is becoming creepier by the minute. I dread going to the Drudge Report and reading about what's happening there. Then I turn the TV on and not a word about what's really going on. MSM is still very much in love with Obama.
Here's something to watch and wonder.

Dontchaknow ANYTHING! FDR was the POTUS in 1929. It's true! Vice POTUS Joe Biden said he was and MSM nodded in agreement.

Nancy Pelosi's top priority is to deliver what Californian moonbats want. She's from San Francisco, world capital of vegans and granola munchers. In other words, Nancy has got a whole bunch of 'nancys' to please.
AGW like organic food and alternative medecines like putting a pyramid on your head and other serious sciences, is very popular in Arnyfornia.

Wind mills, solar panels, electric cars, ethanol and taxes on carbon are all top priorities for Nancy. Like Dion, she truly believe in this even if it goes counter to market demand and to most productive American opinions including free markets, economists and honest scientists without an agenda.
She wants to ram it through even if polls say that the "green" fashion/hysteria is waning and it's way low on people's priorities.
Just like Quebec and the separatists or California and gay marriage, the minority is trying to dictate change to the majority incessantly.

Meanwhile her boss continues to be the teleprompter output only...In Muslim countries, Obama is equivalent to the guy in the tower chanting for prayer.
