"Ich Bin Ein Beginner!"

Joe Biden got it wrong when he said "It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy."

All they had to do was stand back and wait for the One to manufacture his own.

This is smart diplomacy? This is a debacle. The Russians dismissed it contemptuously.

Look, if we could get the Iranian nuclear program stopped with Russian's helping us in return for selling out the Poles and the Czechs on missile defense, I'm enough of a cynic and a realist to say we would do it the same way that Kissinger agreed to delegitimize and de-recognize Taiwan in return for a large strategic opening with China.

But Kissinger had it done. He had it wired. What happened here is it was leaked. The Russians have dismissed it. We end up being humiliated. We look weak in front of the Iranians, and we have left the Poles and Czechs out to dry in return for nothing.

The Czechs and the Poles went out on a limb, exposed themselves to Russian pressure, and we have shown that Eastern Europe is not as sovereign as it appears if the Russian influence is there, and we will acquiesce in what they consider their own sphere of influence.

This administration has prided itself, flattered itself on deploying smart diplomacy. "Smart diplomacy" is a meaningless idea, but if it has any meaning at all, it is not ever doing something as humiliating, amateurish, and stupid as this.

Unfortunately, this time there's no Khruschev to save us.

But you forget - it is all about Obama all the time. Too bad if he tossed allies overboard (next crisis that the US faces, those allies might not be too willing to offer support) - but that doesn't matter, because Obama is all about the BIG gesture even if it doesn't produce anything - being seen to do something is more important than actually doing something.

The sad thing is, Obama only got elected because he's black. He had 0 qualifications for this job, and it's showing. And when the next black presidential candidate comes along, he's going to have to deal with this f*%k-up's legacy unfairly hanging over him and be judged on it, instead of being judged on his own qualifications.

Many Russians love to play chess, and they are usually VERY good at it. If the game you're bringing to the table is craps, expect to get your head handed to you.

Posted by: Edward Teach at March 5, 2009 10:22 AM

Again, a great 'header'; it describes Obama perfectly in his narcissistic pompousness (Ich bin) and his incompetency (beginner).

But it isn't simply that he's a beginner and could possibly learn. There's that deeper problem of his having, long ago, moved himself into a cocooned self-written fictional world. He actually thinks that his words can 'make matter exist'. Obama's world exists only within words. Reality is far, far removed from this safe haven.

He's put himself into a world reality where he operates within a cocooned network, whether as a community organizer or in the Senate, that consists only of words abstracted from reality.

These words are further isolated from reality because they are not expressed in analytical arguments; there's no requirement in Obama's thoughts for cause-and-effect analyses based on data and connected by logic. His rhetoric is purely emotional persuasion - to get someone else to do something - and this something is not a policy that he has analyzed; it just 'feels good'.

A word about 'feel good'. Obama will select policies that make him 'feel good' - and these are ones that make others dependent on him and that remove independence from other people.

Krauthammer's examples of Obama's letter to Russia, asking them for 'this' in return for 'that' - was an example of Obama's fictional world. He actually believes that words ARE reality. And he actually believes that His Words can make another nation..do such and such. Just the words. That's all. As spoken by Obama.

Equally, the second example, of Obama's carbon cap and trade will decimate mid-USA industrial capacity, and do nothing for carbon emissions because the chief polluters, India and China, refuse to participate in such an agenda. Again, Obama's world, which is written by himself, has no reality in it. Because HE hasn't included, in his words, the enormous industrial losses of such an agenda, they simply don't exist.

Not looking for a fight but I too was puzzled by the "getsure"...so just to play devils advocate for a second....

The Americans have always said it is about Iranian missles. The russians have claimed it was about a threat to them.

So the Americans say, fine, help us with our stated threat and your perceived threat goes away..the Russians say no. The Americans are now free to proceed without any cedible objection from the Russians, since they rejected helping the Americans with their threat.

Just an alternative, it all depends on whether the US now proceeds since the Russians have said no. If they don't then Obama is an idiot and all the criticism definitiely applies.

The Russians have made their position clear even when they were offered a tangible way out. Let's see what the US administration does next.

Interestingly, both Krushchev and Kennedy were both war veterans. They knew about war first hand, Krushchev through Stalingrad.

Mednenev and Putin are both pretty serious fellows. Obama is not. As per ET's previous posts re narcissism, it will be interesting to see how O deals with these people who cannot be charmed.

This next bit is slightly off-topic but related, and sorry for the length - but I always found Krushchev's words to Kennedy during the missile crisis interesting:

"If you did this as the first step towards the unleashing of war, well then, it is evident that nothing else is left to us but to accept this challenge of yours. If, however, you have not lost your self-control and sensibly conceive what this might lead to, then, Mr. President, we and you ought not now to pull on the ends of the rope in which you have tied the knot of war, because the more the two of us pull, the tighter that knot will be tied. And a moment may come when that knot will be tied so tight that even he who tied it will not have the strength to untie it, and then it will be necessary to cut that knot, and what that would mean is not for me to explain to you, because you yourself understand perfectly of what terrible forces our countries dispose.

Consequently, if there is no intention to tighten that knot and thereby to doom the world to the catastrophe of thermonuclear war, then let us not only relax the forces pulling on the ends of the rope, let us take measures to untie that knot. We are ready for this."

Let's see, the Iranians just bought another batch of top-notch Soviet air-defence systems to protect their weapons programme from air strikes (the US would use Tomahawk's so this is insurance against Israel).
With increasing pressure from China and an increasingly desperate EU, Russia is eager to solidify its customer base while increasing influence in the region. To make a long story short, Russia will never sell out Iran.

Stephen, while putting the best face on Obama's weakness you forgot this-"We end up being humiliated. We look weak in front of the Iranians, and we have left the Poles and Czechs out to dry in return for nothing."

The Poles and Czechs are going to be the new example of why having America as an Ally may not be a good thing.

When Obama came to Canada and did a photo-op with the Opposition Leader Ignatieff it reminded me of Pearson's visit with LBJ where LBJ said, "Don't you come into my living room and piss on my rug."

We've been "Putin" up with a lot of nonsense, and "Mahmoud" has been suppressed of late. But I know that if I "Harper" or grouse a lot, we will flush the pheasantasy's from the "Bush".

I do however find it re"Merkel"ble, that above the "Blair" of the media, that they don't know "Jacques".

But when I look up in the sky they don't know whether it is "Brown" or blue. Maybe they should Sar"Kozy" up to the coal powered fire, because you never know "Hu" or "Wen" they will show up at the door.

But if you go 'green' with envy it might be considered an "Obama-Nation(tm)". Recently there has been a "Rush" to get under the "Limbaugh" tree, as the rainmaker has poured money from the heavens.

Surely the Czechs will never become a "Havel" not nation. Meanwhile, "Tusk"s have been sharpened on the Poles, though elephants are not indigenous.

And quite frankly, I'm not sure that you would want to "Krus - a - Chev" when that is already happening to GM.

"Ich bin ein, Berliner!"

"I am a jelly filled donut!"

A Berliner Pfannkuchen (also called Berliner Ballen, Berliner, or Bismarck in Canada) is a predominantly German and Central European doughnut made from sweet yeast dough fried in fat or oil, with a marmalade or jam filling and usually icing, powdered sugar or conventional sugar on top. They are also sometimes available with a chocolate, champagne, custard, mocha, or advocaat filling, or with no filling at all. The filling is injected using a large syringe after cooking.

I've always thought that foreign policy should be accompanied by "Berliner pastry".

What we really want to know is which pastry shop Obama visited while in Berlin. After all sound policy is always accompanied by soft pastry.

For in Roman times, the Ides of March was a festive day dedicated to the god Mars and a military parade was usually held.

Thus we note the Siegesaule in Berlin commemorates the victory of the Huns over the Danes.

Thus we say beware Hans Island and the Ides of March!

kathy shaidle - are you saying that the White House's is denying the substance of Obama's letter to Russia? Has the White House offered its own version?

Is this an example of Words-Trump-Reality?..i.e., where something happens, and Obama/the White House says (words) that it didn't happen? And therefore, it's a 'non-story' because, despite the evidence...

With Obama, you either believe his words or reality. For example, if he says that there are no 'earmarks'..then, despite the reality of over 8,000 of them...And if he says that taxes will be cut, despite the reality that they'll be increased...And so on.

And if he says that the economy will increase by 4%, despite its falling...well..

What fascinates me, is this vast gap between fact and fiction. How long can Obama maintain himself in this safe cocooned world that he has built up for himself over the years - an entirely fictional world. How long can he persuade Americans that fiction is 'more real' than fact?

What happens when the gap widens to a crisis point for Americans or when it narrows to a crisis point for Obama?

But not ALL Russians are untrustworthy. I met a Russian once who earned my trust. Let's not generalize! /sarc

But seriously, this is a point a very "street smart" friend has made to me a thousand times: the Communists (used loosely here, substitute totalitarians of any persuasion if you wish) have NEVER kept an agreemet, EVER. And yet the US "engages" N Korea, over and over and over again. Never trust Russians. Never trust Muslims.

Remember Baker and the boys. Their "realist" plan to "engage" (be nice suckers to) the Mullahs to get "help" with the US quagmire (at that point) in Iraq.
And recall, Bush never, ever, even once, nailed Iran for its indisputable assistance to the insurgency. And the mighty British permitted themselves to be humilitated with parading covered seawomen in front of the cameras who also said how nice their captors were.

And recall, Bush/Rice the Nice "engaged" Hezbollah (who now run Lebanon), "engaged" Fatah/PLO the "good terrorists" and Mahmoud Abbas (PhD in Holocuast denial) as the "Palestinian" Martin Luther King.
And vis a vis the long and storied relationship with "our friends the Saudis", well let's not go there.

Let's face it, the Clintonites and Bushites were every bit as stupid and naive -- street stupid.
SO, nothing new here with Obama. He's no dumber than his predecessors, all those accurate theories about narcissim, notwithstanding.

AND, Obama DID ask, in those debates, "heh, what's with that $80 billion surplus that Iraq has?". On the eve of the destruction of the US economy that was timely question.

I remember during the election campaign that the Daily Show - yes, the Daily Show - sent out a reporter to interview black voters. He would describe a McCain policy (where Obama's policy was the polar opposite), attribute it to Obama, and ask the black voter whether they agreed with it. They all said "Yes".

Now I know that it's not scientific - I'm sure there were plenty of informed black voters who told the reporter he was wrong, but they're not funny, so they don't make the air. But there were enough that it made you wonder how many black people voted for Obama just because he was black? And if not voting for someone because she's a woman, or because he's black, is sexist/racist, then isn't voting for someone because he's black equally racist? I find it quite ironic that black racism will cripple the USA.

Oz,

I guess I am saying it may not be the humiliation that and hanging out to dry you indicate...IF and only IF Obama now proceeds with the missle shield.

He certainly has undercut any Russian objection now that he gave them the opportunity and they shut it down so absolutely.

IF he continues to negotiate or fails to proceed then I agree with you. The nightmare scenario though is that the US proceeds THEN the Russians come back and say, well we will help, but of course that changes the dynamic of the conversation since the russians are making the request.

As another poster said, the Russians wont sell out Iran. But let me say again, now that the Russians have played there cards it is up to the US to proceed with haste to install that sheild to preserve their credibility.

I guess I dont see a reasonable offer as an immeadiate sign of weakness, unless of course the intent really was to protect against russian missles, counter to all of the claims made by the US before. The offer then would be a real change in position for the US, and a unilateral one at that.

Lets see how this plays out.

There are some musings in the British Press about Obama's treatment, not only of Brown, as a leader of an important nation, but of Obama's reluctance to engage in direct questions.

"It is bizarre that Mr Obama is less willing to answer questions than Mr Bush. It reflects very poorly on his tendency towards control freakery, which has been in evidence since his campaign…" (Tim Shipman, Telegraph).

This 'control freakery' is indicative, in my view, of Obama's psychological makeup where he has created a fictional world and must maintain control of its content. Questions from Others make him lose control.

I predict that Obama will drastically reduce press meetings; he'll confine them to situations where he is in control of the questions, i.e., as in his first Press Meeting where the questions were submitted before and which turned into yet another campaign style presentation by Obama.

I also predict that Obama will continue to snub foreign leaders as he snubbed Brown; that is, the pomp and ceremony due to a leader of a nation will be sidelined. That's due to Obama's narcissism. The rejection of press meetings is due to his requirement to 'write and live in' a fictional world untouched by reality.

Kathy Shaidle makes an interesting point. The NY Slimes DOES have a reputation for getting things wrong. Usually they get it wrong with Republicans, with DemocRats they get it right.

So if the NY SLimes is "getting things wrong" with Obama, the frickin' Messiah of Hopey Changyness already... I mean its only March you guys...

Dang! That's some spicy meatball.

Now as for you Madam ET, I have to say your ongoing analysis of The One and his never-to-be-sufficiently-damned personality disorder is beyond accurate and is rapidly entering "gifted".

However! The One is not the party. He doesn't even have a policy agenda, as you've so eloquently pointed out, he's in it for the ride.

The Party, on the other hand, is made up of people who are if not hugely intelligent, certainly hugely cynical. They've got their eye on The Main Chance, as it were. Collectively they have decided they are going to run the country based on their propaganda. Capitalism is bad, gun control works, global warming is real, Israel is eeeevile, and terrorists are just misunderstood kids who need some looooove. Oh, and Rush Limbaugh is Satan.

Seeing Drudge yesterday, the "Rush Limbaugh is Satan" thing is official White House and DNC policy. www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/mar/05/feeding-the-beast-on-rush-attacks/

The part where I think they're cynical is they are continuing to pursue these causes even though they know the falsity of them. Their "policy" is a tissue of lies, but it got them a majority, so why fix it if it ain't broke.

The part where I think they're maybe not so clever is that the tissue of lies is great when all you have to do is bash the other guy who's doing the work. When you have to do the work yourself, maintaining the lie is impossible. But they are proceeding as if the lies were true, and so we have a DOW tanking -again- today as people put their money someplace these imbeciles can't get it.

About the only good I can see coming of all this is if the power of the US government is broken in the USA itself. People get sick of the stupidity and forcibly shrink the government, that would be good. Getting to there could be damn ugly.

Speaking of denigrating Others, what did the Obamas give as gifts to the UK Premier and his wife? First, the UK gifts:

"Mr Brown’s gifts included an ornamental desk pen holder made from the oak timbers of Victorian anti-slaver HMS Gannet, once named HMS President.
Mr Obama was so delighted he has already put it in pride of place in the Oval Office on the Resolute desk which was carved from timbers of Gannet’s sister ship, HMS Resolute.
Another treasure given to the U.S. President was the framed commission for HMS Resolute, a vessel that came to symbolise Anglo-US peace when it was saved from ice packs by Americans and given to Queen Victoria.
Finally, Mr Brown gave a first edition set of the seven-volume classic biography of Churchill by Sir Martin Gilbert." (Ed Morrissey Hot Air).

And "Gordon Brown has been given a collection of 25 classic American films on DVD as his official gift from Barack Obama". Brown is NOT a film buff.

The Obama children were given high end clothing, jewellery and forthcoming children's books by British authors.

What did Michelle Obama give to the two UK boys? She gave each one a plastic toy model of the Presidential helicopter; sells for $10 each in the White House gift shop.

So - no ceremonial meeting at the airport, with the two flags displayed. No normal red carpet press meeting, flanked by marines and flags.

Indeed, no real press meeting; Obama doesn't like questions to himself and doesn't like other leaders in the spotlight.

Is Obama going to continue with this contemptuous treatment of other leaders?

Posted by: ET at March 5, 2009 3:22 PM

Two $10 plastic helicopters for the UK boys?
Wow.

I guess that kind of extravagance is exactly why she complained about not being able to make due on her $400,000/year salary in her previous job.

Maybe we should start a collection fund to help her out?

MND, it does shrink when you stop feeding it. Unfortunately that usually ends up looking like Somalia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, name your third world war zone.

The Americans did it once in 1776, be a shame if they needed to do it again.

I'd like that to not happen, frankly. I'm old, and I like my car and my Florida oranges and my strawberries in winter.

Posted by: The Phantom at March 5, 2009 4:05 PM

ET - the public reality of how Obama is treating other leaders is very odd (why did he meet with Ignatieff? To swap Harvard stories?) - but importantly who is advising him??

Is he really getting poor advice in the first place, or is he just doing his own thing as he goes along?

And, if the advice is so poor on something that should be simple (how to treat foreign leaders with the dignity and respect that they deserve) - what other advice is being given, or ignored, on other important matters that we don't know about?

Posted by: Erik Larsen at March 5, 2009 4:10 PM

And there's more; there's Obama's reliance on a teleprompter. This isn't just for his 'set' speeches but for any time he has to answer a question.

Either there are no questions allowed. Or the questions are prescreened, as in his infamous Press Conference, which allows Obama to campaign rather than be accountable. Or, he is 'teleprompted' by his backroom boys.

"Resting on top of a tall, narrow pole, they flank his podium during speeches in the White House’s stately parlors. They stood next to him on the floor of a manufacturing plant in Indiana as he pitched his economic stimulus plan. They traveled to the Department of Transportation this week and were in the Capitol Rotunda last month when he paid tribute to Abraham Lincoln in six-minute prepared remarks.

Obama’s reliance on the teleprompter is unusual – not only because he is famous for his oratory, but because no other president has used one so consistently and at so many events large and small." (Ace of Spades).

What does this mean? It means that he, himself, hasn't thought through and probably can't think through his own administration's policies. He can't think about and analyze questions about policies and programs. All he can do, is persuade you to follow him. Period.

He has no understanding that, for example, his 'stimulus package' contains thousands of non-stimulating earmarks. Why not? Because he lives almost entirely in a fictional world of his own authorship. And he has said that there are no earmarks. He can't handle anyone confronting him on this - and if they did, he wouldn't listen.

When he says that 3 million jobs will be created - he thinks 'that's how it is'. He has no ability to think through his plans and see that it cannot happen. His focus is only on WORDS, on the fictional realm in which he lives. Exclusively lives.

This also means that with such an enormous leadership gap in the US administration, i.e., a President who lives exclusively in his own fictional world - this means that Others will move in to take backroom control. These Others will be the real Agenda-Setters of the Obama administration.

They'll be sure to move Obama out of the reach of questions and keep him simply as a Salesman. But such a cheap salesman, who treats others with such derision. How's it going to work out?

Posted by: ET at March 5, 2009 4:15 PM

Hey ET - another article mentioned that there was also a Brown/Obama gift exchange.

From the Daily Mail:

"During his historic trip to Washington, Gordon Brown gave Barack Obama an ornamental pen holder made from the timbers of the Victorian anti-slave ship HMS Gannet - once called HMS President.

The unique present delighted Mr Obama because oak from the Gannet's sister ship, HMS Resolute, was carved to make a desk that already takes place in the Oval Office in the White House, after being presented by Britain to the US in 1880."

The gift from the President of the United States to the British Prime Minister?

ET: In addition to the narcissim, let's not forget that this cat KNOWS he's a affirmative action beneficiary, as is his execrable wife. He knows he doesn't know much history, for example. It's not just the narcissism -- it's the fear of being exposed as the ignoramous he clearly is. And what he knows (thinks he knows) about oppression and exploitation cannot be discussed openly. Hate-whitey Black liberationism (marxism). Slavery grievance 150 years after abolition.

As to those jaw-dropping lies (I'm not for big government, there's no pork in the stimulus bill, employee "free choice" unionizing sans secret ballot) it's not that he's living in fiction, more like he's engaging in THE BIG LIE. He's a marxist, ya know, even if he couldn't pass a test on the subject.

This cat is highly focused. He wants to do as much damage as he can in the single term available to him. And he's doing a hell of a job of it.

There's a piece at American Thinker comparing Obama's work thus far to the agenda at the Communist Party of the USA (he's already done or started to do, about 40+ of 44 items). The only item clearly anti-agenda is his strange desire to send more troops to A'stan. But that might be for the potential glory of capturing OBL.

He's a commie ya know.

Erik Larsen - exactly. Where is Obama getting his advice from, since he, himself, is not someone who develops, or even analyzes, policies and programs.

He moved into the Democrat party because its policies and programs, based around big centralist and even authoritarian government, make him feel comfortable. He is nervous around individualism and freedom. So, he's just accepted their policies and programs without thought.

In his current position, who is advising him? There's Pelosi and Reid and who else? Obama is not a policy/program developer. So - who is it?

As for how he treats foreign dignitaries, I think these first few steps were his. They revealed his psychological requirement to be 'Top Dog' and also, to remain cocooned in his self-authored fictional world.

This means that he has to reject equality - which would be declared by a two-flag ceremony when Brown arrived and by a two-flag formal press conference.

He also has to show disdain and indifference - his treatment of both Brown and the Japanese PM reveal that. As well as his 'gifts'.

Will he be allowed to continue this way or will someone step in and insist he treat other leaders as equals? I doubt if Obama could permit it; his personality is too fragile for that.

So, having Brown address Congress in part made up for the shabby treatment by Obama.

Each day, quite frankly, reveals something new about Obama..but all part of his psychological aberration. And this is not good for the USA.

There were two funny comments after the DVD article

1. Were they region encoded? If so, Brown couldn't even watch them

and best of all:

2. "Re-gifter! I gave those DVD's to Obama three weeks ago!"

Is this Obama's Idea of Soft Power?
Where in real trouble folks.

Protocol officers handle the gifts, unless they are letting staff handle it.....ridiculous if true. I cannot believe that these would be the things that the Obama's would choose.

What will he get the Queen? The Bruce Springstein Boxed Set?

Oh well at least we won't have to listen to or watch another joint press conference with Owe and world leaders. After Harper unintentionally upstaged Owe simply by making economic sense Owe won't let another leader even share the podium with him. Of course it didn't help that Harper went to the US and appeared on all their major media and made so much sense that even the Owe media was nodding in agreement with him. Too bad Brown was next in line and denied the limelight with Owe and the world media.

Obama is using his 'community organizing' tactics for governing the nation. He's holding 'let's all talk together' meetings..if you can imagine..and presuming that these 'chatter-fests' of several hours will actually come up with in-depth, analytic proposals for serious national problems.

"For the second time in as many weeks, President Obama pulled together dozens of lawmakers, community leaders and business representatives to solve a pressing issue -- this time, health care reform.

But the president's focus-group brand of governing is starting to wear thin for some who say the sessions are more style than substance.

Obama held a similar summit last week to promote fiscal responsibility. Over the course of three hours, the 130 or so in attendance broke into five groups and then reconvened, and the president said all their suggestions would be boiled down into a final report in 30 days. Soon after, the White House went ahead and released a $3.6 trillion budget anyway." (Fox Politics)

Notice that key point. The report had already been written up by the Backroom Boys of the White House. So, what's the point of these Chatter-Love-In Sessions'?

Ahh, it's to make a public show that he is 'working with the people'. It's a campaign strategy. Not a strategy for policy and program development. Obama is constantly campaigning and this is to show that he listens to people. He doesn't; he's indifferent to other people's views and his only requirement is that they acquiesce to him.

easiest way to summarize this: Obama doesnt know **** about dealing with other countries. He will- sorry, HAS made us look weak in an already weakened state. The fact that he even considered dropping the missle shield is redonkulous! (you heard me! he's past ridiculous, all the way into redonkulous. I used it to gain attention. SEE? you'll remember this better now wont you?) He gave away money that will all wind up in the hands of Hamas AND hes cutting down our own defense while he's at it.
