Posted by: neo at February 20, 2009 11:19 PMThe chronology of the Canadian of Convenience - Michael Ignatieff:
Born of Immigrant parents in Canada and who then took him elsewhere when he was 6 years old.
Returned at 11 years old to attend private boarding school in Canada.
Remained to get his taxpayer subsidized further education at Canadian Universities for a few years and worked for two years at the University of BC where he was turned down on his request to become an Assistant Professor.
Left Canada and for the next 36 years lived in the UK, other parts of Europe and then the United States for 6 years.
Was "enticed" by Liberal backroom boys, Toronto lawyers, to return to Canada to save us from our heathen selves as our saviour and PM.
The "enticement" included a nice little visiting professorship , courtesy of the Canadian taxpayer at the University of Toronto while the plot to parachute him into the Liberal leadership role was unfurled to where it is today.
All told - the man is 61 years old and has spent less than 15 years in the country he now wants us to think he "gets",
Oh yeah.
Sorry - that should be Ignatieff was taken from Canada when he was 6 WEEKS old and did not return until he was 11. His formative years were not even here.

'Arctic Sea Ice Underestimated for Weeks Due to Faulty Sensor
'Feb. 20 (Bloomberg) -- A glitch in satellite sensors caused scientists to underestimate the extent of Arctic sea ice by 500,000 square kilometers (193,000 square miles), a California- size area, the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center said.
'The error, due to a problem called “sensor drift,” began in early January and caused a slowly growing underestimation of sea ice extent until mid-February. That’s when “puzzled readers” alerted the NSIDC about data showing ice-covered areas as stretches of open ocean, the Boulder, Colorado-based group said on its Web site....

Lets not get too hung up on the picture of Iggy and Obama on the Marquee in Times Square. He's trying to look like he's the PM of Canada, he's play acting and leaning heavily on "Hope". This makes him an impostor and a poseur.
He's hoping to continue his easy glide all the way into the top seat. He'd be better suited to US politics given he's spent more time there. He also agreed with Bush on Iraq and other matters.
I'd say he's in a state of confusion trying to be whatever it takes for power.

There’s something in the air. It’s the smell of roasted pork. President Obama heralded the signing of the trillion-dollar “stimulus” bill in Denver and promoted his massive mortgage entitlement expansion in Mesa, Arizona at tightly-controlled campaign events. But outside the Secret Service perimeters, a raucous grass-roots rebellion against Beltway spending binges has caught fire. The new Boston Tea Party is here, baby, and it’s doused in barbecue sauce."

Re Ignatieff, on a point of information: his mother was not foreign born. She was Alison Grant, very much an insider of the Canadian Establishment: her father was headmaster of Upper Canada College. Posted by: Speedy at February 21, 2009 9:10 AMThere's a case being argued now in Canadian courts in Montreal where a Said Namouh is on trial for 'contravening the Canadian criminal code', facing charges of conspiracy and promoting terrorism.
Namouh used the internet to encourage people to join al qaeda, to become 'jihadists', to kill 'the unjust', to set up a pan-Islamic world and so on.
"His lawyer insists that all of these actions are merely his right, under the rubric of freedom of expression and religion. He said that even though the beliefs of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden are "repugnant to hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people, still, are they not religious beliefs?"
Now wait. Our courts, i.e., the HRC, charged the Rev. Boissoin for HIS religion beliefs, charging him with 'spreading hatred' for his letter to the editor, outlining the Christian rejection of homosexuality. There was no violence urged, no outlines of how to make bombs, no insistence that the 'unjust' must be killed', as there is in this Namouh case. The fact that this letter fell under 'freedom of expression' and 'religious beliefs' was utterly irrelevant.
However, this case is arguing that internet urging of murder, mass killings, instructions on making bombs, threats of violence, hatred of any who are not of the same religion, is acceptable because - and only because - such actions fall within the agenda of a RELIGION! If these same actions are not the agenda of a religion, then, they'd be defined as terrorist.
Hmm. How is it that our courts can reject the right of Rev. Boissoin to write a letter to the editor expressing his Christian rejection of homosexuality - and yet - a lawyer in Canada can argue that promoting terrorism and mass murder on the internet is both a right of freedom of expression and a sacred belief of a religion?
And since when is religion not simply an outline of one's relationship to metaphysical forces but also an outline of one's social behaviour, one's political behaviour, one's economic behaviour?
The story is in the National Post under 'where do you draw the line'.

"Dissidents held during Clinton Beijing visit
By CHRISTOPHER BODEEN – 3 hours ago
BEIJING (AP) — More than a dozen Chinese dissidents have been questioned, followed or detained during U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's weekend visit to Beijing, fellow activists said Saturday.
The stepped-up controls come as international human rights groups expressed outrage over a statement by Clinton ahead of her Friday arrival that issues such as climate change, the world financial crisis and North Korea would likely take precedence over traditional U.S. concerns about human rights in her discussions.
Amnesty International said Clinton's remarks had damaged future U.S. initiatives to protect human rights in China. New York-based Human Rights Watch said progress on issues cited by Clinton could only be achieved through greater legal protections and press freedom.
"Secretary Clinton's remarks point to a diplomatic strategy that has worked well for the Chinese government — segregating human rights issues into a dead-end 'dialogue of the deaf,'" Human Rights Watch's Asia advocacy director Sophie Richardson said in an e-mailed statement.
Blacklisted author Yu Jie said Saturday a pair of plainclothes policemen visited him on Friday and said he would have to report all his movements to them in advance.
Yu said officers had demanded that he ride in a police car while traveling around the city, a form of monitoring that he was forced to endure for more than a month during the Beijing Olympics in August. Yu said he refused and they agreed to merely follow him while he drove his own vehicle."

I attended UCC from 1970-74. My dad was a schoolteacher, but I won a scholarship. Approximately 20% of the boys attending receive some form of financial aid. Do a lot of rich guys send their sons there? Yes, and sadly, many are thick as bricks. But the school unabashedly segregates boys into "A" forms and "B" forms. I was so glad, after leaving public school, to finally be in a class where most of the guys were on the same intellectual level as I was. It made for much more stimulating discussions, and of course, as a boys' school, I wasn't distracted by the micromini skirts the girls had worn in my Grade 9 class. My friends who stayed at the public high in Don Mills told me by Grade 11, they were getting stoned before class, and at lunch. I think my brain would have exploded in the mental vacuum of zoned out teens.
I always found it amusing that cocktail party socialist Steve Lewis sent his son to UCC. Are there schools in Toronto that have better educational standards? Undoubtedly - UTS comes to mind - but our best have been pretty d*mn good, from Stephen Leacock to Robertson Davies to David Gilmour in literature, from Timothy Eaton and his son John Craig (whose sons, alas, were some of the bricks I referred to) to Ted Rogers to Galen Weston to Kenneth Thomson in business, along with a generous helping of actors, athletes, doctors, etc. As the Beach Boys said "[I'm] true to my school".
I don't hold it against Iggy that he went to UCC; I hold it against him that he chose to leave Canada for so many years, and then comes back and expects a coronation. I bet the Tory war room is already preparing ads showing Iggy's speeches and letters supporting Iraq and torture.

CTV News Net reports that Obama has invited the GG to Washington for talks on the problems in Haiti and how the U.S. and Canada can work together to find solutions.
Isn't this further evidence that the man who thought Canada had a president knows nothing about us and how our parliamentary system of democracy works? The GG is not like the Secretary of State. She cannot advise the PM and the Canadian gov't on how foreign policy matters. She's a figurehead—there to promote Canada on a cultural level around the world.
BTW, on the issue of Obama thinking that Canada had a president... I find it fascinating that Bush, governor of Texas at the time and wanting to become president, was ridiculed for not knowing who the president of Turkmenistan was (or whichever former Soviet state was) but Obama, whose from a GREAT LAKES STATE (!), gets a free pass on his faux pas.

Posted by: A storm is coming at February 21, 2009 2:48 PMRe: Ignatieff. The big fly in the ointment for Grits is Ignatieff was supposed to take over power, not try to win it. Now they're stuck with wagging their fingers, putting Harper on "probation," trying to figure out a way to erode Tory support. The Obamaesque attempt is doomed to failure; Ignatieff doesn't have the presence, oratorial skill or charisma to pull it off. Not even close.
The Grits continue to wallow in their thinking that Canadians acutally want them in power. No they don't.
The Liberals, now with Ignatieff as leader, formed a crony pact that will cause a lasting, negative impact on Confederation.
At a time when we were trying to reach out to Quebecers, to convince them of their folly in electing separatists, the coalition (based on the flimsiest of circumstances) reinforced the idea that separatism could hold sway in Canada.
This reckess action will not be forgotten, to be sure.
ET - I think the excuse offered for the double standard you describe will be that the Namouh exhortations are obscure, while in the Boisson case, his "hate" was transmitted through a widely read periodical. How they weigh this one is beyond me, but that is their likely "argument."

He would rather be a PM then the GG, he feels he could do more as PM then GG which is mostly ceremonial, as the Queens rep to Canada
Tell that to the current GG.
Posted by: bryanr at February 21, 2009 3:25 PMMaybe we can stop calling Ignatieff Puffin Iggy, he really can't hide any poop, we can smell it a mile away. He's more like a Gumby Boy with this stunt on Times Square. He's reminding us how much time he spent in the US and how little in the Country he aspires desperately to run.
Silly fool, he looks it too.

There's an interesting flame war going on between Mark Steyn and Time's Joe Klein. Here Steyn provides all relevant links.
I would suggest to you all that the reluctance of Klein and his ilk to EVER criticize anyone or anything Muslim is precisely the reason very little coverage is being given to the beheading in Buffalo.
Sigh.
Posted by: Robert W. at February 21, 2009 4:58 PMulianov bleats: "It cost less than $2000 to broadcast Iggy with Obama. Most Americans haven't got a clue who our PM is, and now they think it's Iggy. And Harper thought he was so smart, attempting to hoard the glory of Obamamania all to himself while relegating Iggy to a last minute airport visit with Obama. Master strategist...hahaha."
Which means... what to Canada, exactly? That now some Americans might think that Iggy is our PM, so we'd better hurry up and vote him in?
Not even you can be that stupid, ulianov. You may aspire to such levels of ridiculousness, but you surely can't believe one in 100,000 Canadians give a rat's ass what was on that billboard.
Posted by: Yukon Gold at February 21, 2009 5:08 PMApparently it is now unpatriotic to question Obama and the Democrat Congress about anything. So says one Ed Eusebio of Vacaville, California.
Here's the comment I left:
Mr. Eusebio,
It's now "unpatriotic" to raise questions about how $1,000,000,000,000 is likely going to be wasted? You live in a state that is essentially bankrupt and you're saying such things to others who want to have a prosperous future for their children and grandchildren?!
Do you recall John F. Kennedy's famous quote: "Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country."
Why do I get the strong sense that you've NEVER asked yourself this simple question???

"Into a Taliban wasteland of blood and fear
Daud Khattakis the first reporter for a British paper to enter Swat Valley, Pakistan, since the rebels who hold it agreed a ceasefire. He finds a hell-hole of bodies and ruin."
"Last week I became the first journalist from a British paper since the ceasefire to venture past the heavily armed Taliban checkpoints and travel into the valley.
The journey was not made without trepidation. On Wednesday a journalist for Pakistan’s Geo television network, Musa Khan Khel, 28, was killed when he tried to secure an interview with Fazlullah. In a characteristic Taliban flourish, there were signs that his killers had attempted to behead him.
What I found in Swat was a hell-hole. Suicide bomb-ings, car bombs and artillery have scarred the valley’s roads and buildings. The charred remains of hospitals and even a madrasah (seminary) litter the landscape.
Nearly 200 schools have been destroyed, all girls over the age of eight are banned from lessons and, in a symbol of the Taliban’s hatred of learning, the public library in Mingora has been wrecked.
The Taliban have banned music and dancing, television and internet cafes. Women cannot leave home without wearing a burqa, the all-encompassing robe. Justice has been enforced with floggings and public executions.
Everyone who can afford to leave has fled the valley. Police stations are deserted and fewer than 100 local policemen remain. In deserted parks the swings are rusting, creaking and empty.
Green Square, in the heart of Mingora’s bazaar, is now known as Khooni Chowk – or bloody square – because of the public executions carried out there by Taliban who leave the bullet-riddled bodies of police and soldiers for all to see.
Local residents said mothers used to warn their children not to pass through the square on their way to school. “Sadly, our
children have got used to such sights,” said Fayaz Zafar, a local journalist. “They’ve become inured to scenes of decapitated bodies, suicide bombs and military operations. They now play ‘Taliban and soldiers’ in the playground.”"

"Huge Protest Over Irish Economy [Coming Soon To A City Near You]
Huge protest over Irish economy
Protesters gather at Dublin city centre for the demonstration Up to 100,000 people have gathered in Dublin city centre to protest at the Irish government's handling of the country's recession.
Many are angry at plans to impose a pension levy on public sector workers.
Trade union organisers of the march said workers did not cause the economic crisis but were having to pay for it.
In a statement, the Irish government said it recognised that the measures it was taking were "difficult and in some cases painful".
The pension levy was "reasonable", the government said. reflecting "the reality that we are not in a position to continue to meet the public service pay bill in the circumstances of declining revenue".
There were conflicting estimates of the numbers of people at the march, which began on the north side of Dublin in the mid-afternoon.
Police said 100,000 people were on the streets, while organisers said they expected 200,000 to protest in total."

"Brzezinski: There Could Be Even Riots’
Brzezinski fears class warfare. Not Mika. Zbigniew. And not Barney-Frank-on-Meet-the-Press class warfare. Real, blood-in-the-streets riots.
Jimmy Carter’s former National Security Adviser expressed his concern about the possibility of riots on Morning Joe today. To stave them off, he proposes the creation of a voluntary National Solidarity Fund, whose contributors would be those who made out very well in recent times."

Apologies for the length, but given the interest in this program, I want to be as thorough and transparent as I can be.
The most frequently asked question you wanted answered was, how did Kathy Shaidle get on The Agenda?"[...]
