" The Ontario Human Rights regime is incompatible with a free society."

Mark Steyn testifies before the the legislative hearing on the Ontario Human Rights Commission...

What impressed me most powerfully about the hearing was not Mark's address but the hatred visible on the faces of the apparatchiks. Imagine a man boldly declaring defiance of their nascent nanny state, backed by thugs. It was never supposed to happen.

The transcript at Post-Darwinist

Meanwhile, over in CHRC land, Jennifer Lynch goes partying in VIenna on the taxpayer's dime.

Gotta love Steyn.

No wonder the "Human Rights" toadies had such hatred showing on their faces.
Facts and history are something they don't want to deal with.

Jennifer likes to Lynch her pork.

And how do you like your Wiener Schnitzel?

What amazes me the most is how newspapers are missing this story to tap into a huge readership base.

Part of the reason that MSM have been so pro-O is that it brings in the viewers, and that brings in the advertising dollars. It's a business decision.

The HRC issue could sell a lot of copy - but I find that even Macleans coverage of this has been somewhat tepid.

This should be front page news, below the fold is fine, but for heaven's sake, people would be interested in this!!

I used to laugh as a child about how people would whisper in the Soviet Union, because of spies and persecution everywhere. I'm not laughing so much anymore.

Posted by: Erik Larsen at February 9, 2009 6:37 PM

Fascinating how the Big Media pretends to be unaware of this, refusing to tell the People about it... Is the Big Media a willing accessory to this running-roughshod over Canadians' rights? Why is the Big Media protecting the Liberal Fascists of the "Human Rights" Commissions/Tribunals? Damn, but it's a bit like being Nazi sympathizers/collaborators... which isn't very far removed as a parallel with being Hamas/Hezbollah/Fatah sympathizers/collaborators, which the Big Media clearly appears to be, thanks to its clearly biased reporting!

(I just said that on my post linking to the story)

When I was working for a large chemical company, we had a phrase for this kind of thing..."encouraging diversity by enforcing conformity"

Posted by: Tex at February 9, 2009 6:51 PM

Justthinkin', come to think of it, perhaps being named "Lynch" is karma doing its work before the commissions of wrongs...

Don't be surprised to see folks nicknaming 'er "The Lyncher" or something like that... 'course, if she wasn't a Liberal Fascist, she wouldn't be facing such an unpleasant public image...

Posted by: The Canadian Sentinel at February 9, 2009 6:51 PM

Fire them all. No questions, no golden parachute. Just kick them out. They have proven their disloaylty to this Nation & what it stood for at least at one time.

Posted by: Revnant Dream at February 9, 2009 6:58 PM

Hans, your title is dwindling. You haven't been demoted, I hope?
Erik: We meet again. Yes, why isn't Macleans covering this properly? If not them, who?(Blogs. I know.)
At least Steyn will talk some sense to anyone who's listening.

Posted by: Black Mamba at February 9, 2009 6:58 PM

I think the scarey part of all this is why is it still happening? Why does the MSM not leap on it for pure story benefit? Why is there not a group of MP's that are endearing themselves to Canada by wiping it out? Look at it!! It just does not wash!!

I know, just because I'm paranoid does not mean that there is not someone out to get me.

Posted by: Pat at February 9, 2009 7:01 PM

With every government going in to deficit, now is the time to write your MPs and MLAs demanding that these abominations be severely pruned.

Posted by: Fritz at February 9, 2009 7:02 PM

gawd Steyn is good . . . . ripped them all new assholes.

Fire.
Them.
All.

And make Lynch pay back all the money she is blowing on useless trips to do nothing but embarrass Canada overseas.

She is the ultimate useless Snivel servant.

"Tar" and "feather" are the two words that repeatedly come to mind whenever the subject is this group of unelected fascists.

"Why does the MSM not leap on it for pure story benefit?"

The HRC's ability to thrive is precisely as a result of corrupt leftist MSM in this country.

This is essentially an internet driven story, not MSM.

Never will be unless we get a true conservative medium to champion the fight.

Come back home Conrad Black, we could use a true conservative voice again.

Posted by: Joe Molnar at February 9, 2009 7:27 PM

I can't speak for the expressions on the faces of the committee - I was at the back taking notes - but I know that at least two of the MPPs in attendance did their absolute best to trip up Steyn or box him into making a statement that could be trimmed into a pull quote to make him look like a hatemonger. One of them was my own MPP, sadly.

Posted by: rick mcginnis at February 9, 2009 7:34 PM

Never heard of "Post-Darwinist" before. But, it appears he/she went to the hearings and blogged them.

Good on yer!

Posted by: RW at February 9, 2009 7:37 PM

Post-Darwinist, good on ya'.

Black Mamba to Erik Larsen: "... why isn't Maclean's covering this [HRC fiasco] properly?"

I think Mark Steyn addressed this when he answered a question about media chill in the coverage of controversial topics. He pointed out that, definitely, the OHCR and CHRC cases have shrivelled the bounds of public discourse because media outlets don't want the headache of court cases and vast expenditures of their profits.

Posted by: batb at February 9, 2009 7:48 PM

Stay tuned for way more from today:

Mike Brock, Rick McGinnis and others taped it, interviewed Steyn, heard the rude thing the next witness said about Steyn after he left the room etc etc...

Rick is too nice: the questions some of the committee asked were not just leading. Worse, they were stupid people trying to sound really REALLY clever.

for example, one dimwit brought up... wait for it... Oliver Wendell Holmes' "fire/theatre" quote, which is misquoted, misdated and misunderstood completely. Steyn kept trying to correct him, which made the guy madder and madder. Google "Colby Cosh fire theatre" for a superb debunking of that expression's utter vapidity & inaptness.

The other broad cited as examples of "hate" a) "women still earn only 70cent for every dollar a man earns" -- which was debunked years ago

b) "what about No Irish or No Jews signs in store window?" (I actually helped debunk this years ago by publicizing an academic study on my blog, which revealed that only two -- yes, TWO -- such Irish signs ever existed.

As Steyn pointed out, "Not Irish Need Apply" was however a very popular vaudeville song, and elderly Irish Americans (fondly) misremember the signs' existence as part of their brave, hard scabble immigrant lives (think of the Four Welshmen skit by Monty Python).

The signs are a myth, rather like the "women's libbers burned their bras" thing -- also an urban legend.

So yeah, Steyn had to face a lot of people who were dumber than he was but I figure he's used to that by now.

batb: True. But when the very magazine that was being "investigated" won't get interested.... that's too chilly.

A superb address by Mark Steyn.

Clearly put and with good purpose. It does not get any better than this.

Human Rights Commission equals Human Rights Inquisition.

You bet. That plus the ideological bumpkins who don't know what logic is anymore. Nor any history. Its a frustrating business when trying to talk to social illiterates. Who have no idea how society came about. One guy called me a liar for saying Universities are Church founded as is public education an extension of church literacy programs in the 19th century. Both Catholic & Protestant. They refused to believe it. Most think the government gave us all our institutions. Its a cryin shame with a black mark against education. It will not soon erase. Then there is the collectivist mindset with its entitlement mentality to saw threw. An almost Herculean task. Personally I don’t know how Mr. Steyn takes the stress of it all.
Thank God he does. Most of those panelists or Witnesses would have sold their souls for a smidgeon of talent Mark has. Envy is a true cancer.

Posted by: Revnant Dream at February 9, 2009 9:26 PM

Rev: I think they may have sold their souls for rather less than that.

Posted by: Black Mamba at February 9, 2009 9:52 PM

Mark Steyn is a brave man...and a heroe. Canadians owe Mr.Steyn a great big thank-you for exposing these Liberal facists for what they are... "The process is the punishment" says it all. These goose stepping facists, like Lynch, no this only to well, terrorizing one individual so as to terrorize anyone else who steps out of line with the commisars of Trudeaupian social engineering schemes. Tar@Feather, humiliate, marginalize, gag, along with finacial terrorism are the weapons of the HRCs. Terrorize one person with the desired result of terrorizing the many.

I will look in some Toronto newspapers for insightful coverage of the hearing !

Posted by: arf at February 9, 2009 10:11 PM

As has been alluded to by others - it is scandalous that a canadian with as high a profile as mark steyn has internationally - He guest hosts the most popular radio talk show in the world - and has appeared in possibly every single large english-speaking newspaper at some point or other -and while in court for human rights violations for god's sake and we have zip coverage of it by the CBC and the other usual suspects.

Damn them to hell...

Posted by: Gord Tulk at February 9, 2009 10:18 PM

Gord Tulk, ditto.

What a spineless country we now live in. We've been infected by the plague of indifference. (Mark Steyn is much too good for this benighted dominion.)

God says He will spit out the lukewarm: I think that's happening. Right here. In Canada. I'm not making this up.

Posted by: lookout at February 9, 2009 10:28 PM

Chillin'

Of course it is pure co-incidence that Mark has not been published in Canadian MSM since the BCHRT hearings back in June 08. Has to make do with the gigs at the Corner, the OCR and subbing in for the fat guy with the cigars.

Globe and Mail, NP, Citizen, Macleans...the Star? Steyn free. Even the CBC, in its efforts to balance the Mallick, could not quite bring themselves to hire our Mark.

Pity. People might read/watch/listen to them again.

Posted by: Jay Currie at February 10, 2009 2:11 AM

Mark Steyn's sub for Rush Limbaugh last week showed his remarkable knowledge, intelligence, hilarious character and wit. Among what he and Rush have in common: no college or university (maybe that's why they both know what they are talking about). Don't remember what year I ran across Mark's writings, maybe around 1998, but his advocacy of free speech has always been striking and is his premiere service to humankind. Even his "It's a Marshmallow World" was delightful. We're proud and happy to have him as a resident of the Great Satan.

Posted by: Lynda Calhoun at February 10, 2009 6:27 AM

Lynda, your gain, our huge loss. But, as I said, Canada doesn't deserve a man of Steyn's calibre.

Take good care of him!!

Posted by: lookout at February 10, 2009 7:42 AM

The National Post has an article today about this hearing by Joseph Brean, page 1.

It seems that Professor Moon used his presentation to slam Mark and Ezra and deny that their charges are true. Moon came out swinging FOR the HRCs and very much against their detractors.
