I agree that she doesn't belong in the House of Representatives, or in any job more challenging than, oh, selling cookies, but her district consists largely, perhaps entirely, of San Francisco. There is about as much chance of a Republican winning a seat representing San Francisco is there is of my being the quarterback for next year's Super Bowl winner.
Now see here, the number uttered also includes the jobs lost because of global warming, the lay-offs from election campaigns as well as the recession fall-outs, therefore this 500 million number must be right. Now we know who helps Taliban Jack bin Laydon with his math wizardry.

That's not the point. The point IS, that when conservatives mis-speak they are ridiculed endlessly and called 'morons', but when liberals say such things as "57 states" they are immediately exonerated and their foulups are designated as 'honest errors' by those same 'moron-callers'.

Last I checked abcd was an anonymous blog commenter and Pelosi was making decisions that Americans will have to live with for a generation. Decisions about numbers that she clearly doesn't comprehend. I couldn't make that mistake without instantly correcting it. Anymore than I could say "It's good to be in New Pennsylvania" like Obama did. This bill is a looting of the treasury. I don't even think that Nancy understands that. She just knows that the financial crisis upped her credit card limit and she is going to spend it.

She said this a couple of days after her very good friend and fellow right of center talking head Lisa Olsen was killed by self professed Muslim Jihadis. Lisa was on the plane that hit the Pentagon. Posted by: mhb at February 4, 2009 7:59 PMset you free, I think I made myself quite clear. We're not talking day to day behaviour here. Of course, in that regard, we all fall short, and, as far as we reasonably can, should deal charitably with one another in our personal relations. However, to translate that dispensation to politicians, as politicians, is unreasonable.
Why? Politicians are different. They are public figures, who live off the rest of us and benefit from all kinds of perqs: fair enough. However, our politicians are accountable to the rest of us. When they and/or their parties perpetrate skulduggery and/or benefit from both that and the gross double standards of the MSM and other elites, there’s no reason why the rest of us shouldn’t push back—and hard.
How do you think we should be responding to the depredations of Iggy and Pelosi here? Should we be letting them off the hook, somehow? (The discrimination of low expectations?)
I love Kate, Mark Steyn, Ezra Levant, and others who, politically, kick butt, big time.
lookout:
I agree we should all push for smaller governments, those who purport to know how to spend our money better than we know how to spend our money.
I find the use of the word depredations quite interesting in the sense that language often offers clues to the inner workings of a human being.
I'm assuming you understand the dictionary meaning of the word, which is ‘to plunder.'
So, I would conclude that some sense of your discontent is caused by somebody else's plunder. That type of attitude, when attributed to left-wing politics, is often referred to as ‘victim mentality.'
Perhaps you could explain how Nancy Pelosi committed an act of plunder with her use of ONE incorrect word.

It may be just be my quirk, but I believe there are three levels of discourse ... about things, about people and about ideas.
Sadly, much of the tone here lately has fallen tragically short of intelligent discourse of ideas and has degenerated into gossip, where it becomes important to point out and laugh at flaws in others (people level) to satisfy some perverted sense of self-importance.
That level of discourse is shameful to conservative tradition, at least as I understand it.
Although it is common to name-call and taunt on left-wing sites, some here have tragically turned into what they claim to hate.
Sure reasonable debate is ok here, Lookout, unless and except of course when you would rather claim to know of that to which I would in your opinion presumably concur. On the other hand, if you care: ask me for clarification of my now, as you characterize it, apparently seemingly contrarian comment.
Don't yell at me, don't presume to speak for me: I've got better things to do. Which was my point about a particular matter of the signal to noise ratio in blog comments that I think SYF has been alluding to (though I've been wrong before, and as you noted Lookout, it's a tricky matter to pull off at best).
Anyway, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it, remember: I come here to think, not to argue.
And of course, unreasonable debate is ok here too: up to a point ;-)

your tight assed pompous 'tude is offensively sad making...how dare you get in my face slagging the PMSH and yet defending the sorriest bunch of malfeasing crooked fiduciarily incompetent felons the country has endured for 100 years...
as i say, you sadden me...to think this great Dominion can create a metrosexual of your triste inducing calibre sends a thrill DOWN my leg.
so like how about that coffee i mentioned earlier today ?
my treat...
Posted by: john begley at February 4, 2009 11:40 PMBrilliant satire John, and so subtle, too.
Posted by: Vitruvius at February 4, 2009 11:45 PMjohn:
Could you point out where I've slagged PMSH?
Where were felons for the last 100 years defended?
Those types of delusional ramblings are what bring down the quality of discourse on this blog.
I mean, do you actually believe the type of garbage you're writing?
Posted by: set you free at February 5, 2009 12:00 AMhey, john, I hear you!
Vitruvius, I have neither yelled at nor presumed to speak for you. But, if you wish—you certainly don't need my imprimatur—please feel free to clarify.
But, the facts show that set you free (syf) has set up a most distasteful situation here today, apparently, seconded by you.
While presuming to set the standard for the rest of us, deficient mortals, “Would it be too much to ask that, as the best conservative site in North America, that points be made in a civil manner?”, syf has had the audacity to lecture and hector ELEVEN—I counted—mainly regular posters, who made their points in—guess what?—a “civil manner”? (Let’s have some concrete examples of uncivil discourse.)
All the while, syf made personal comments about these people and presumed to tell them that they were to comport themselves in a more respectful manner: the huge irony is that while syf was busy belittling and bossing everyone around, he, himself, was displaying a huge lack of charity and respect.
This kind of behaviour reminds me of the Bible verses, “Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?” (Matthew 7:3) and “[Jesus] said to them, "Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone . . . " (John 8:7)
Considering that syf seemed to be out of sorts with just about everyone here today, as well as tilting at SDA philosophical windmills*, your weighing in as you did seemed to uphold a very unpleasant double standard.
* This is from The Sheaf article—another thread here:
“But McMillan says a little goading never hurt anybody and unlike the CBC, nobody is forced to pay for it and can leave her site and never come back.
“‘It’s not much fun if you’re not provoking people,” she said. “If they’re offended, they can leave. But you’re supposed to have fun.’”
set you free to john, "Those types of delusional ramblings are what bring down the quality of discourse on this blog.
"I mean, do you actually believe the type of garbage you're writing?"
Now, isn't that civil discourse?
And syf dares to lecture the rest of us on the finer points of civility . . .
Arrrggghh! You took the bloody bait, SYF. I am so disappointed. Fortunately, I have beer with which to stave off my disappointment. For as you point out, Lookout, Kate did say: “It’s not much fun if you’re not provoking people [...] If they’re offended, they can leave. But you’re supposed to have fun.” I'm certainly havin' fun, and I'm certainly not offended, so I might as well stay, eh what? Besides, I've got a show to do here tomorrow night, honey ;-)
Posted by: Vitruvius at February 5, 2009 12:10 AMWell, I'm having fun too, so that makes two of us . . .
Posted by: lookout at February 5, 2009 12:16 AMlookout:
Mathew 7:3 would be my point exactly.
And, so would John 8:7.
I'm so glad that you have finally understood that Nancy Pelosi may have made a speck of dust of a mistake when she said million instead of thousand.
And that it's Iggy's business how he spends or doesn't spend his money.
You do understand that those Bible verses tell us to work on our own imperfections instead of pointing out others' imperfections. Don't you?
You should, since your sense of superiority based on recognizing other people's perceived shortfalls have deluded you into believing you're a better person.
BTW, ask your minister about using Bible verses as weapons, particularly when it seems they do not apply to you.
Posted by: set you free at February 5, 2009 12:19 AMAh, well, that's not my field. Good night.
Posted by: Vitruvius at February 5, 2009 12:24 AMset you free...
i THINK i understand your argument...attacking PMSH is cool...but attacking Pelosi ain't cool..
is that about it ?
golly...when i accept that as the benchmark of political thought it's so easy to digest....but perhaps when we have our coffee we could expand on that belief and compare notes on say PMSH and Crouton's legislative records....'legacies' if you will........then we could hopefully address Pelosi and the big O's record to date.
so what kind of hole do you like in your do-nuts...?
Posted by: john begley at February 5, 2009 12:41 AMBack to basics, and I risk wasting my breath, but two points about Nancy for the literal minded: her gaffe is just a symptom of her vast incompetence (scary in a woman with so much power), and, where left and right politicians are concerned, the MSM’s huge double standard (Nancy versus Sarah) is troubling, to say the least.
I trust I’ve civilly made my points clear. (But it seems that syf isn’t just concerned about tone: he seems to be actively disputing arguments as well: no problem, except that the suggestion has been that it’s just the WAY people say things here, not what they say, that bothers him. The facts show otherwise.)
I suggest that syf might feel happier as a member of a Canadian Human Rights Commission: the folks there are experts at judging others—and they get to do it all day, every day, and get paid for it too.
For all our sakes, I hope syf has a better day today.
syf's admonitions not to stoop to the same level as the 'opposition' cause me to recall the punchline of an old joke, wherein a farmer strikes a mule between the eyes with a 2x4: "First, you have to get his attention".
If we do not hammer them constantly when their side screws up they will consider liberal gaffes to be understandable and acceptable, while continuing to ridicule, with impunity, corresponding slips on the part of the right.
As I noted before, I whistle my dog, but if he stops barking and begins to talk, I'll converse with him.
The American people have made a very huge mistake that they will never recover from and if you dont belive me give it 3 more years.People are about to see things that they never have imagined in their lives and it is not GOOD! The dems should not be in the position of power at this time, they are liers and always have been. They will rape the public and try to blame it on Bush.Every mistake they make will be blamed on the Bush admin untill the economy is tanked. That is the way the left has always done buissness and that is how they have allways done it.
